RaGa’s First Ever Press Conference in Mumbai Lasting 2 Minutes and 45 Secs

Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s first ever press conference in Mumbai on Wednesday turned out to be a huge disappointment: Lasting two minutes and 45 seconds.

Over 100 representatives from print, electronic and online media turned up and patiently waited for Rahul, who breezed in almost an hour later. The media briefing was organised by the Congress state and city units at a venue in Bandra around 8.30 am and mediapersons were barged with multiple reminders.

After the initial introductions, a question was put to the Congress chief whether he would be willing to take over the leadership of the opposition alliance before the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Brushing it aside, Rahul repeated his criticism of the Bharatiya Janata Party, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh.

This also lasted less than two minutes. Then he thanked everyone and suddenly got up, ending the press conference abruptly.

A party official later said: “Rahulji was getting delayed for his onward journey to Nagpur and Nanded and other engagements.”

Many mediapersons had left their homes at 6 am to reach the Bandra venue on schedule.

An apologetic Congress leader Sanjay Nirupam blamed it all on a PR team.

“We had clearly said he would give a few bytes to the electronic media. The print media was also specifically informed that he will not take any questions. The programme went as scheduled,” Nirupam

Cong Attacks Jaitley Over jibe at Raga

The Congress today hit back at Union Minister Arun Jaitley over his jibe at Rahul Gandhi, alleging that arrogance of the BJP has touched its zenith as it turned “blind” to farm distress.

Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala accused the Modi government of writing off loans worth Rs 2.41 lakh crore of a handful of crony friends citing a reply given in Parliament by the finance ministry on April 3.

“Loot and scoot had become a norm with scamsters fleeing the country after decamping with public money, he claimed in statement.

“How much does Arun Jaitley know? Has arrogance of power reached such a zenith where the BJP is blind to farmers’ distress’? How are empty-worded blogs an answer to betrayal of farmers by the Modi government?” he asked.

Attacking Gandhi or his speech in Madhya Pradesh today, Jaitley wondered ‘how much does he know? When will he know?’

The banking fraud started in 2011 when the UPA II was in power and it was only detected during the NDA period, he said in a Facebook post in response to Gandhi’s speech in Mandsaur.

In his statement, Surjewala reminded the Union Minister of former Prime minister Jawaharlal Nehru’s words that “facts are facts, and will not disappear on account of your likes”.

He said contrary to Jaitley’s “lies”, the government was actually the ‘NPA sarkar’ and alleged that the gross non-performing assets have gone up from over Rs 2.51 lakh crore in March 2014 to more than Rs 8.31 lakh crore in December 2017, a whopping rise of 230 per cent as per an April 6 reply in Parliament.

“Fleece the banks and fly away to foreign lands are the facility for fraudsters under the Modi Government’s watch. Perhaps, Arun Jaitley forgets the recent bank loot scams worth over Rs 61,036 crore,” he alleged.

The Congress leader said over 130 farmers organisations were protesting across India through an unprecedented rural bandh and rural distress, agricultural indebtedness, farmers suicides and distress sale of crops much below MSP was the new order.

“Arun Jaitley, Union Minister without portfolio, with zero knowledge of agriculture is giving gyan’ (wisdom) to the nation again today, with his usual travesty of facts and trivialization of farmers’ issues,” he alleged.

Surjewala also alleged that Make in India’ has become an empty slogan of the government and the BJP and its ‘minister without portfolio’ forgot that industrial growth has declined from 7.4 per cent in 2016 to 4.45 per cent in 2018.

He alleged that between 2014 and 2018, India’s revenue from exports was zero.

“Arun Jaitley waxes eloquent about jobs. The BJP promised two crore jobs per year, but the stark reality that it has only betrayed our youth. The Modi government created only 4.16 lakh jobs in 2016-17 and 77 per cent of Indian workers will have vulnerable employment by 2019 as per ILO.

“Let us not forget that there is ‘lowest-ever’ agriculture growth under the Modi government – 1.9 per cent (2014-18) as compared to 4.2 per cent under Congress (2004-14)

“The prime minister’s promise of MSP equal to cost plus 50 per cent profit for farmers is a white lie. Rural wage growth has dipped from 38 per cent in 2014 to zero per cent in 2018 (RBI report). Tragically, 35 farmers are driven to suicide every 24 hours (NCRB data),” he said.

He said sugarcane arrears surge to over Rs 20,000 crore as an “insensitive” government “floundered”.

The PM Fasal Bima Yojana benefited insurance companies, not farmers and companies earned a profit of Rs 14,828 crore but farmers got paid only Rs 5,650 crore, he claimed.

The Congress leader alleged that there was ‘double jeopardy’ for farmers as agriculture exports declined by USD 9.4 billion and agriculture imports rose by USD 10.06 billion.

Jaitley Takes Jibe at RaGa said “Wisdom Can’t be Inherited”

NEW DELHI: Taking a jibe atRahul Gandhi for his anti-Narendra Modi tirade, Union minister ArunJaitley questioned the Congress President’s wisdom saying that it has to be acquired through learning and cannot be inherited.

The Congress party has become “ideologyless” because its “only obsession is a person called Narendra Modi”,  Jaitley said in a Facebook post.

Rahul Gandhi has been attacking the BJP government for waiving loans of Rs 2.5 lakh crore by big corporates, as also criticising the Mudra Yojana.

Observing that the UPA government during 2008-2014 indiscriminately lent money through banks to 15 big loan defaulters, Jaitley said Rahul Gandhi prefers the “Gobbelian traditions to say the exact opposite”.

“For a President of a national party not to understand this basic procedure of bank functioning should be a matter of concern to the entire party as also the country. In dynastic parties political positions are heritable. Unfortunately wisdom is not heritable. It has to be acquired through learning,” he said in a post titled ‘Is Congress Becoming Ideologyless? Is Anti-Modism its only ideology?’

Rahul Gandhi earlier this week cited the examples of successful American entrepreneurs to attack Modi’s policies, and described the founder of Coca-Cola as a ‘shikanji seller’ and that of McDonald’s a ‘dhaba wala’. +

“Though factually what he stated was incorrect, the larger point is that he saw virtues in these professions which can act as a launch pad for many start-ups.

“The great grandson of the man who authored ‘The Discovery of India’ could with his customary inaccuracies one day give to this country his monumental work on ‘The Rediscovery of Coca Cola’,” Jaitley said.

He further said that there is no ideological pattern in Gandhi’s statements. “Ignorance with anti-Modism is a common thread”, he said.

Dynastic political parties are family and personality dominated and ideology takes a back seat, he said.

“The leader’s ill-informed instincts become the ideology. This can only happen to a party which becomes ideologyless; pushes itself to the fringe; is willing to act as a tailender to regional parties. All this because its only obsession is a person called Narendra Modi,” Jaitley said.

The minister also questioned the Congress party’s ‘sudden love for the Other Backward Classes’ saying former Prime Minister Rajiv Gandhi had opposed the Mandal Commission and the Congress party recently opposed the grant of constitutional status to the National Commission for Backward Classes.

On Congress leader P Chidambaram’s comment that frying pakodas + is not job creation, Jaitley said “being cleverer than rest of his colleagues, he perhaps was trying to neutralise the success story of the Mudra Yojana where 12.90 crore loans have been given for self-employment to various weaker sections”.

Jaitley said the total of these loans has touched Rs 6 lakh crores and created work for millions of people.

Karni Sena has Threatened to Chop off Kiran Maheshwari’s Nose and Ears

The Shree Rajput Karni Sena has threatened to chop off Rajasthan Education Minister Kiran Maheshwari’s nose and ears for allegedly equating Rajputs with “rats”. Responding to a question over the fact that the Sarv Rajput Samaj Sangharsh Samiti had started a campaign against the BJP ahead of the upcoming assembly polls, Maheshwari had on Monday said, “Aise bhi log hain jo barsati choohe (rats) hain, jo chunav aate hi bilon se nikal aatein hain (There are people like rainy rats who come out of their holes during election time).”

The Rajput organisation has demanded an immediate apology in the case, even as the Minister said she was not referring to the community.

On Tuesday, the Karni Sena warned the minister to apologise or face dire consequences, adding that she should have remembered the “Padmavat Controversy” before making such remark. During the protests against release of ‘Padmaavat’, Mahipal Singh Makrana of Rajput Karni Sena had threatened Padukone. “Rajputs never raise a hand on women but if need be, we will do to Deepika what Lakshman did to Shurpanakha,” he had said.

“BJP has come strong in Rajasthan with the help of Rajput community. Maheshwari had won the last assembly elections with the help of these ‘rats’ and hence we will teach her a lesson in the coming elections. There are 40,000 Rajput voters in her constituency (Rajsamand). She should apologise immediately. Also, the state government should issue a statement,” said Karni Sena’s state chief Mahipal Makrana in a video which went viral soon.

He added that although they hold women in high regard, they will not tolerate women insulting the community.

However, Maheshwari denied using any offensive language against the Rajputs and sought to clarify that her statements against the Congress were twisted to incite the community.

Congress Condemns ‘Rat’ Statement by Rajasthan Education Minister

Congress’ Rajasthan chief Sachin Pilot also condemned the incident and said that Maheshwari should apologise to the entire Rajput community. “The BJP party has been hurting the sentiments of common man, communities and political parties with their derogatory comments which is highly objectionable. The Education Minister should apologise to the Rajput community,” he said.

Slamming Maheshwari, state Congress Vice President Archana Sharma said,”When the things aggravated and her comment drew flak from all parts of the state, Maheshwari changed her stand to come out clean and said that she was targetting Congress with her rat remark. This shows poor mentality of BJP which can come down to any level to prove themselves clean.”

Arvind Kejriwal not Conscious of His Duties : Sheila Dikshit

As Chief Minister Arvind Kejriwal’s sit-in protest inside the Raj Niwas entered the third day today, Congress leader Sheila Dikshit said he was not at all conscious of his constitutional duties and people are bearing the brunt of his “confrontational politics”.

Dikshit, a three-time Delhi chief minister, said it was “completely unacceptable” that the head of the government was sitting on a “dharna” at the Lt Governor’s house when the city was reeling under severe water crisis and other problems.

The veteran Congress leader said people of Delhi had given Kejriwal a “huge” majority and he does not have any option of staying away from his responsibilities and inflicting pain and miseries on the common man.

“What message you are giving? It (dharna) makes no sense. People of Delhi are very very disappointed because they brought him with a huge majority. There is not a single Congress MLA in the Delhi Assembly. The BJP had won only 3 seats. You had a sweep and this is how you are misutilising it,” Dikshit told PTI in an interview.

Kejriwal, Deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia and two other Delhi ministers have been on sit-in protest at Lt Governor Anil Baijal’s office demanding directions to the IAS officers to end their “strike” and cooperate with the AAP government.

Referring to Delhi’s administrative structure, Dikshit said there were limitations of powers for the Delhi chief minister and the constraints coming in the way of governance can be overcome by being logical and not by adopting a confrontational approach.

“This is a crisis. The chief minister of Delhi sitting at the Lt Governor’s house on a kind of a dharna is just not acceptable. Delhi is at a standstill and because of it (protest by CM) citizens are suffering,” said Dikshit, whose 15-year rule had come to an end in 2013 following AAP’s foray into politics.

On Kejriwal’s run-ins with the Centre as well as with the bureaucrats, she said, “You are inviting everything yourself and then trying to make a martyr of yourself.”

The bureaucrats in Delhi government have been on a symbolic strike, boycotting meetings with AAP ministers since February following an alleged assault on Chief Secretary Anshu Prakash at Kejriwal’s official residence. The officers have demanded an apology from Kejriwal for the incident.

Recalling her tenure as chief minister of Delhi when Atal Bihari Vajpayee was the prime minister, Dikshit said she did not have any problem with the BJP dispensation at the Centre and cited the example of Delhi Metro project and introduction of CNG in public transport as success stories of both the governments working together.

“When you are in administration you do not have indulge in conflicts. You should try and bring everyone together. Now there is conflict and nothing else. Have you come to govern the city only to have conflicts or have you come here to rule the city. You have been chosen as a somebody who will rule the city and you are going away from that completely,” she said.

Since coming to power after scripting a sensational election victory in 2015 winning 67 out of 70 assembly seats, Kejriwal has been having a rocky relationship with the Centre on a variety of issues with the chief minister often accusing Prime Minister Narendra Modi of trying to stall governance in Delhi for political gains.

Dikshit said people of Delhi are suffering because of “confrontational politics” by Kejriwal.

“He (Kejriwal) is not conscious of what his constitutional duty is. He is just not conscious of it. He is trying find ways that I cannot do it because I do not have the powers. You have all the powers; yes the power is in cooperation with the government of India,” said Dikshit.

She said the LG has a role to play in the governance of the city and it was for Kejriwal to decide whether he wants to cooperate with Baijal and take the city forward or not do any work.

“The Congress was in power for 15 years. We did not have a single conflict with the central government. There is no reason for it (protest) to happen unless they are trying to divert attention from the work that they have been unable to do, Dikshit said.

Asked whether Kejriwal ever tried to reach out to her, Dikshit said she never expected it and he never did it.

On whether there was any possibility of Congress having any electoral understanding in 2019 Lok Sabha polls, Dikshit said there was no such initiative.
