Fulfil promise to build Ram temple, RSS tells Centre

A sea of saffron was witnessed at Ramlila Maidan and roads leading to it in New Delhi as lakhs answered a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) call for a ‘Dharm Sabha’ on Sunday.

Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi made this appeal at a VHP rally at Ramlila Maidan in Delhi

A sea of saffron was witnessed at Ramlila Maidan and roads leading to it in New Delhi as lakhs answered a Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) call for a ‘Dharm Sabha’ on Sunday.

Various estimates suggested that over a lakh were present at the mega gathering organised to press the Centre for the construction of a Ram temple in Ayodhya.

The massive rally comes just two days before the commencement of Parliament’s winter session.

Amid chants of Jai Shree Ram, the gathering send across a message that the calls for a legislation to pave the way for the construction of the temple are now stronger.

At the rally, the executive head of Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS), Suresh ‘Bhaiyyaji’ Joshi, gave a warning to the Union government for the temple construction.

“Those in power today had promised to construct the Ram temple. They should listen to people and fulfil the demand. They are aware of the sentiments (of people),” he said without naming the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led NDA government at the Centre.

“We are not begging for it. We are expressing our emotions. The country wants Ram rajya,” warned the powerful RSS leader.

VHP president Vishnu Sadashiv Kokje and its international working president Alok Kumar are also expected to address the rally.

VHP’s spokesperson Vinod Bansal had earlier told PTI that the gathering will change the hearts of all those who are not in favour of bringing the bill for construction of a grand Ram mandir in Ayodhya.

Reports say that most of the supporters came from Ghaziabad, Gautam Budh Nagar, Baghpat and Meerut – all of them neighbouring districts in western Uttar Pradesh. Visuals on TV showed thousands on the streets waving saffron flags and carrying posters showing a temple.

Anticipating the turnout, the Delhi traffic police had already placed diversions around Ramlila Maidan.

No traffic was allowed on Ranjeet Singh Flyover (from Guru Nanak Chowk to Barakhambha Road), JLN Marg (from Rajghat to Delhi Gate), Chaman Lal Marg near VIP gate.

Snipers were deployed on high-rises around the Maidan and other security arrangements were made.

The final Dharam Sansad’ will be held on 31 January and 1 February.

Vijay Mallya extradition case edges towards ruling

On bail since April 2017, the former Kingfisher Airlines boss has contested his extradition on the grounds that the case against him is “politically motivated” and the loans he has been accused of defrauding on were sought to keep his now-defunct airline afloat

Chief Magistrate set to rule on India’s extradition petition on Monday.

Chief Magistrate Emma Arbuthnot is set to deliver her judgment on India’s efforts to extradite businessman Vijay Mallya to India on Monday. It will follow a trial that took place over the course of nine months, ending in September, following Mr. Mallya’s arrest in April 2017, on an extradition warrant.

India has been seeking the businessman’s extradition on charges of fraud and money laundering amounting to ₹9,000 crore. He has been on bail since his arrest.

The case focuses on loans disbursed by the IDBI Bank, with the prosecution arguing that Mr. Mallya never had the intention of paying back the loans, used misrepresentations (including on brand valuation) to obtain them, used the funds in ways that were never intended by the terms on which they were disbursed, and attempted to squirrel away parts of it.

“His company was in intensive care, the market was in intensive care, it was only heading in one direction, as it went down it was going to sustain huge losses and the defendant had a choice: either take those losses yourself and impinge on your own lifestyle or you try and palm them off onto a bank,” Mark Summers, the Crown Prosecution Service barrister told the court in December 2017 when the case kicked off.

The defence has rejected these contentions, insisting that the loans had been taken out as Mr. Mallya and Kingfisher Airlines attempted to rescue the business, amid unprecedentedly difficult conditions for the aviation sector, particularly because of high oil prices and sluggish demand in the wake of the global economic crisis.

It was a case of “business failure” rather than fraud, Mr. Mallya’s lead barrister Clare Montgomery told the court at the start of the case. They have also challenged the contention that it was used in ways never agreed to and have maintained that the guarantees provided – including through the valuation of the company – were nothing other than genuine.

Alongside challenging the main government case they — through expert witnesses — have sought to portray the case as politically motivated, and have raised concerns about jail conditions in India and in Arthur Road Jail in Mumbai, where Mr. Mallya would be detained before and (if convicted) after any trial there.

The defence had also challenged the admissibility of certain prosecution evidence – an attempt that failed in all cases save for email conversations covered by legal professional privilege.

The hearings have continued well beyond the original period envisaged, as the judge sought clarifications on jail conditions and other issues, including detailed notes on the conspiracy charges facing Mr. Mallya in India, as well as notional charges.

“It’s like a jigsaw puzzle,” remarked Arbuthnot during one of the hearings earlier this year.

While India’s attempt to extradite alleged bookie Sanjeev Chawla was initially rejected (it has successfully appealed and the case is to be reheard) because of concerns around jail conditions, in the final hearing – when final oral submissions took place – Arbuthnot indicated that, having received assurances and further details from India relating to jail conditions, that it was the prima facie case that would matter most to her.

Even if the judgment goes against Mr. Mallya, he is unlikely to be extradited to India any time soon, given the appeal options that would be open to him (and to India if it lost).

Mr. Mallya has attended the hearings, often making public statements inside and outside the court house. Among the most controversial came on the day of the final hearing in September when he let drop that he had met Finance Minister Arun Jaitley in Parliament before he left the country in March 2016 and told him he would be leaving for London.

Mr. Mallya has occasionally taken to Twitter to make public his defence arguments and point to the settlement offer he had made before the Karnataka High Court, relating to the loans from a consortium of 13 public sector banks. “I have offered to repay 100% of the principal amount to them. Please take it,” he tweeted last week.

ISI conspired to open Kartarpur corridor for destablising Punjab: Amarinder Singh

Opening of Kartarpur Corridor is clearly a game plan of the ISI and a bigger conspiracy seems to have been hatched by Pakistan Army against India: Captain Amarinder Singh

The CM said Imran Khan was undoubtedly making efforts to bring peace, tranquility, and harmony with India, but at the same time, he should also prevail upon the top brass of Pakistani Army to ensure that killings of our soldiers at borders are stopped immediately.

Citing the fact that Pakistan Army General Qamar Javed Bajwa had broken the news of opening the Kartarpur Corridor to Navjot Singh Sidhu even before Imran Khan was sworn in as their Prime Minister, Punjab Chief Minister (CM) Amarinder Singh has dubbed the whole affair as a bigger conspiracy hatched by the Pak Army.

The opening of the Kartarpur Corridor is clearly a game plan of the ISI, said the CM in an interview to a TV channel, adding that a bigger conspiracy seems to have been hatched by Pakistan Army against India.

He said that Pakistan was attempting to revive militancy in Punjab and thus everyone should be wary of all of its overtures, no matter how grand they appear to be.

Amarinder Singh said the demand for opening of the Kartarpur Sahib corridor was pending since partition as several holy Sikh shrines (Sri Nankana Sahib, Sri Panja Sahib, Dera Sahib, and Kartarpur Sahib) had been left in Pakistan.

Even former PMs Indira Gandhi and Dr Manmohan Singh had taken up the issue of opening the Kartarpur Corridor with Pakistan. He said he himself had raised this issue with his Pakistan Punjab counterpart Parvez Elahi and with the then President, Parvez Musharraf during his previous tenure as the chief minister.

The CM said Imran Khan was undoubtedly making efforts to bring peace, tranquility, and harmony with India, but at the same time, he should also prevail upon the top brass of Pakistani Army to ensure that killings of our soldiers at borders are stopped immediately.

Pakistan’s history is the witness that if any PM wants to stay in power, he has to toe the line of the Army, said the CM, citing the example of Nawaz Sharif’s agreement with the Pakistani Army in Dubai, which led to his continuation as PM.

On the issue of Navjot Sidhu’s visit to Pakistan for the ground-breaking ceremony, Amarinder said Sidhu went there due to his friendship with Imran Khan, adding that this was not unreasonable.

He said that he himself has many friends there, including the former Pakistan Punjab CM Parvez Elahi.

Describing Sidhu as a “likeable person,” the CM said he and Sidhu were not at loggerheads as reported by the media and he had absolutely no problems with Sidhu while running the government. Amarinder said that Sidhu always spoke in a forthright manner and his only problem was that “sometimes he shoots before he thinks.”

Responding to another question regarding Sidhu’s remarks that Rahul Gandhi was his Captain, the CM said that this was hardly an issue to be raised as Sidhu had always treated him (Captain) as a fatherly figure.

Beef lover Historian Ramachandra Guha receives threatening calls

After a magical morning in Old Goa we had lunch in Panaji, where—since this is a BJP ruled state—I decided to eat beef in celebration

He said he had not filed any formal complaint, he had in fact informed a senior police official about the calls.

Now the question arises why? He is scared that he may not meet Gauri Lankesh’s Fate, he certainly needs security he should file a formal complaint against the mobile number owner and he must bring this matter to an end.

Two days after posting a photo of himself eating beef in Goa, Bengaluru-based author and historian Ramachandra Guha tweeted saying he had received threatening calls.

He told media persons in Bengaluru that the threatening calls started coming on his landline on Sunday morning.

Earlier in the day, he put out two tweets. In one, he said: “I have received threatening calls from a man calling himself Sanjay from Delhi. His number is +91-9X3X1-3X6X8 (number hidden on purpose). He threatened my wife as well as me. This is for the record.”

Replying to

You are not enjoying a meal while eating beef and sharing the picture on social are purposely mocking at the faith of millions. Suit yourself. How your ‘secular ‘ mindset has turned you into a totally insensitive human being is not difficult to see.

Within minutes, he put out a second tweet stating: “This threatening tweet below is from a former official of the Research and Analysis Wing. I would like to place it on record, and will do with every subsequent threat received.”

He told news men that while he had not filed any formal complaint, he had in fact informed a senior police official about the calls. “In the light of Gauri Lankesh murder and long hitlist, I thought I should keep the police informed… The photo was unnecessary, but I stand by my views,” he said.

Meanwhile, In another tweet, Mr. Guha said: “I have deleted the photo of my lunch in Goa as it was in poor taste. I do wish however to again highlight the absolute hypocrisy of the BJP in the matter of beef, and to reiterate my own belief that humans must have the right to eat, dress, and fall in love as they choose.”
