Brain tumours pose a complex challenge as they can manifest in various ways, making early detection difficult. While some symptoms are well-recognized, there are several lesser-known signs that often go unnoticed or are attributed to other causes. Among these hidden symptoms are:

  • Headaches: Headaches or pressure in the head that is worse in the morning. They can sometimes be described as tension headaches or migraines, presenting as severe and unrelenting.
  • Eye Sight Problems: Blurry vision, double vision, loss of peripheral vision
  • Motor Impairments: Weakening or loss of feeling in an arm or leg, trouble with balance, or difficulties in coordination.
  • Speech and Cognitive Changes: Problems with speech, feeling constantly tired, confusion in daily tasks, memory issues, difficulty following simple commands, or alterations in personality and behavior.
  • Seizures: Particularly if there is no history of seizures, sudden seizures should not be ignored.
  • Auditory Issues: Hearing problems or experiencing dizziness or vertigo (a spinning sensation).
  • Unexplained Hunger and Weight Gain: A strong increase in appetite and subsequent weight gain without any apparent cause.

Recognizing symptoms of brain tumours can be especially challenging for those already living with neurological or neurodegenerative disorders. Existing cognitive or physical impairments can make it difficult to differentiate new symptoms caused by a brain tumour from those associated with their pre-existing condition. Therefore, vigilance and careful monitoring are crucial to identify any subtle changes that may indicate the presence of a brain tumour.

In observance of World Brain Tumour Day, it is imperative to emphasize the importance of early detection and timely intervention. Individuals should trust their instincts and consult with a neurologist or neurosurgeon if they suspect any unusual symptoms associated with brain tumours. Timely diagnosis and treatment can significantly improve patient outcomes and enhance overall quality of life.
