UILS, PU organises Avant Garde Intra-Department Debate Competition 2019

The Literary Society of University Institute of Legal Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh, under the able guidance of Dr. Sasha and Dr. Chanchal Narang conducted an Intra-Department Debate Competition under Avant Garde 2019, the annual literary fest of the Department on 25th and 26th of September, 2019.
The Intra-department debate competition, aimed at helping the students with their verbal skills and the art of persuasion as well as allowing them to showcase their debating fervour, saw the earnest participation of 20 teams throughout the department. The medium of speech for the debate was English. The preliminary rounds were conducted on 25th September 2019 with the top 6 teams progressing to the finals. Motion of the House for the preliminary rounds was ‘This House believes that only private institutes can provide quality education’. The preliminary rounds were judged by nine senior teachers of the department.
On 26th September 2019, the top 6 teams from the preliminary rounds contested for the much coveted running trophy of the UILS annual debate competition. Motion of the House for the Final Round was ‘This House believes that Vegetarianism should be made mandatory’. The final round saw a fierce competition among the top 6 teams for the pinnacle. Finals were judged by the accomplished mind of Dr. Rajinder Kaur.
The team of Surner Singh and Sehaj was adjudged as the winner, the team of Kashish Aggarwal and Ekamjot Kaur was awarded the trophy of the first runners-up while the team of Abhishek Bindal and Jainender Singh Kataria was adjudged as the second runners-up.
The esteemed judges shared their thoughts with students and provided them with some valuable tips on debating and rhetorical speech. They congratulated all the winners and encouraged all the participants for their future endeavours. Overall, the event turned out to be a great learning experience for all the participants as well as the volunteers.
