“Unlike ‘pakora’ business, tea selling business is also creating employment for Indians.” Navnath

PUNE: Setting a benchmark for his competitors, a tea seller in Maharashtra earns Rs 12 lakh per month.

The Pune-based Yewle Tea house has become one of the renowned stalls in the city.

The co-founder of Yewle Tea house, Navnath Yewle, wants to make it an international brand very soon.

This business will help in creating employment for others, he said.

Unlike ‘pakora’ business. this tea selling business is also creating employment for Indians. This business is growing fast and I’m happy,” Navnath said.

In 2011, Navnath and his business partner thought of starting a tea-selling business.

“We researched for four years and finalised a quality for our product,” he said.

As of now, the tea house chain has got two outlets in the city and every center has about 12 employees working in it.

“3000 to 4000 cups of tea are being sold in each outlet everyday and we earn a total of Rs 10 to Rs 12 lakh per month,” Navnath said.

“We are planning to set up 100 outlets in future,” he added.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi has said that the person who found international aerated drink brand Coca Cola used to sell ‘Shikanji’ in America while the founder of McDonald’s used to run a ‘dhaba’ in the country. The remarks were made by the Gandhi scion while addressing the National OBC convention of the Congress party at Talkatora Stadium in New Delhi.

Addressing the gathering, the Congress chief also targeted Prime Minister Narendra Modi, accusing him of always giving preference to big industrialists and ignoring farmers and those running small businesses.

Targeting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party during his speech, the Congress president said, “BJP’s strategy is clear. Just 15-20 rich capitalists will give thousands of crores to Prime Minister Modi and all benefits will go to just those 15-20 rich people.”

In a scathing attack on the ruling party, Rahul Gandhi said that “today, our nation has become a slave of two to three BJP leaders and the RSS”.

“Everyone including MPs is afraid to speak. Most of them are not allowed to speak. And those of us who do speak, the BJP does not listen to. Only RSS is given a hearing,” said the Gandhi scion.

People who really work are confined to the back room, but the profit of their labour is enjoyed by someone else, he further said.

Out on Bail Chhagan Refuses to Bail BJP

In his first public rally after spending 26 months in jail, senior NCP leader Chhagan Bhujbal took on the BJP-led government for trying to corner him with corruption allegations and for fooling people with false promises.

“I had belief in the judiciary. So I am out on bail. I will always have belief in the judiciary and would come out free from allegations levelled against me,” Bhujbal said during a 40-minute speech on the foundation day of the NCP, which coincided with a rally to conclude its ‘Halla bol agitation’ in western Maharashtra.

The NCP leader expressed gratitude to everyone who stood by him and his family during the tough times. “Many came to meet me from all political parties, including the BJP, and I express my gratitude to them,” Bhujbal said, naming Shiv Sena chief Uddhav Thackeray, MNS chief Raj Thackeray, BJP ministers Dilip Kamble, Girish Mahajan and Girish Bapat, and Congress leader Radhakrishna Vikhe-Patil.

On speculation about his political career, he said there was no need for him to think of any other party, as the NCP had stood by him and his family during hard times. “NCP MP Supriya Sule frequently met me. The NCP chief took care of my family by constantly remaining in touch with them,” he said.

Bhujbal said his properties were raided by authorities multiple times but they failed to get anything against him. “My family had to suffer as the women and children were scared of the raids. They later started spending time in others’ houses to keep the children away from getting scared,” he said.

Incidentally, the Maharashtra Sadan, for the construction of which he has been accused of corruption, is being used by the BJP for holding party meetings, Bhujbal pointed out.

Bhujbal took on the BJP government by making sarcastic comments about its promises. “I was surprised to find after being released from jail after 26 months that Rs 15 lakh each was deposited in my and my family members’ bank accounts. I found there was no unemployed youth, and gas and petroleum products had become very cheap. There are no more rapes taking place in the country, and terrorism has been weeded out after demonetisation. I am very thankful to the state and union government for the changed situation,” Bhujbal said.

There have been programmes like ‘Start up India and Make in India”, the NCP leader said, adding, “I fear that now there would be a ‘Ruin India’ campaign.”

Commenting on the government’s four years in power, he asked it to name four cities that have become smarter, four districts where every house has toilets and are in use, four districts where new hospitals have come up, or power generation plants have been set up.

“The government should inform me the four sectors free of corruption or four km stretch of Ganga river that has been cleaned completely,” Bhujbal said sarcastically adding that he was amazed to know that there are no farmers suicide taking place in villages anymore. “The change is that farmers are committing suicide in the Mantralaya building and not in villages,” he said, adding that no farmer in the country was happy or was experiencing the ‘acche din’ promised by the government.

Bhujbal, citing an article by retired Justice PB Sawant urging for a fight against the undecleared emergency in the country, said, “I am thankful that the former justice has been vocal about the existing situation, which is very serious.”

The BJP had assured reservation to Marathas and other communities, but there has been no decision on reservation for various communities and instead efforts were being made to create hatred among communities, Bhujbal said.

“I would participate in the protests on the streets for the interest of the poor and needy. There is no reason for me to leave the party as I know it is the only one to fight for the cause of the common public,” he said.

Neerav Modi Seeking Political Asylum in UK

Nirav Modi, the billionaire jeweller at the heart of a more than $2 billion fraud case in India, has fled to the UK, where he is claiming political asylum, the Financial Times reported on Sunday, citing Indian and British officials. Britain’s Home Office said it does not provide information on individual cases.

Nirav Modi could not be contacted by Reuters for comment on the FT report. Punjab National Bank, India’s second-largest state-run bank, said earlier in 2018 that two jewellery groups headed by Modi and his uncle Mehul Choksi had defrauded it of about $2.2 billion by raising credit from overseas branches of other Indian banks using illegal guarantees issued by rogue PNB staff at a Mumbai branch over several years.

Nirav Modi is in London trying to claim asylum from what he calls “political persecution”, the FT reported.

India’s ministry of external affairs told the FT the Indian government was waiting for the country’s law enforcement agencies to approach them before pushing for an extradition, which had thus far not happened. The ministry did not respond to a Reuters request for comment outside regular working hours.

India is already seeking the extradition of Vijay Mallya, a liquor and aviation tycoon, over unpaid loans to his defunct Kingfisher Airlines after the businessman and co-owner of the Formula One Force India team moved to Britain in March last year.

Indian federal police filed charges against more than 25 people in May including Modi, Choksi, former PNB chief Usha Ananthasubramanian, two of the bank’s executive directors and three companies belonging to Nirav Modi. Modi and Choksi have denied any wrongdoing.

Last month, senior executives at the bank were accused by the Indian police, in a charge sheet filed in court, of misleading the central bank in late 2016 over the lender’s handling of the financial messaging system and credit guarantees that were at the centre of the fraud.

CBI is Probing the Role of Top Bankers in Vijay Mallaya Case

CBI is probing the role of top bankers in connection with the loans given by banks to Kingfisher Airlines Ltd (KFAL), promoted by Vijay Mallya.

The agency has written to the consortium that lent to Kingfisher Airlines and a few bankers, including the former chairman of a public sector bank, seeking information and documents. It has also summoned a few bankers for recording their statements, sources said.

The latest investigation was launched after a London court, which is hearing the Mallya extradition matter, asked Indian authorities to explain their case against some of the bankers as it observed that rules were being violated by Indian banks which sanctioned the loans to Kingfisher Airlines.

Apart from this, a report by the government’s fraud office has pointed to the role of bankers in allegedly helping Mallya secure loans despite the weak financials of Kingfisher Airlines. The report suggested that the Central Vigilance Commission, CBI and the Reserve Bank of India (RBI), should “look into the aspect of violations of lending norms, if any, by the banks”.

The investigations by the fraud office has alleged several lapses by the public sector lenders of Kingfisher Airlines and the investment banking arm of a state-owned bank

or instance, the report said the Rs 8,000-crore Debt Recast Package (DRP) for Kingfisher Airlines prepared by the investment banking arm of a public sector bank in 2010 had a “number of shortcomings and flaws in respect of entire preparation of DRP financial projections” and “processing of the proposals by the lending banks.”

It said the DRP “did not carry out any independent viability study of the (financial) projections to ensure that the projections were realistic, just and achievable” and that “the banks also did not critically analyze and consider the various remarks made by the auditors in the audited financials of KFAL as at 31.03.2009” that could affect the financials of the airlines.

It said the investment banking arm of the public sector bank “did not do any due diligence on the valuation of the brand Kingfisher Airlines which was valued at Rs 4111.00 crore at the time of DRP and which formed part of more than 60 per cent of security value offered”.

“Political pressure was brought in to get the postponement of liquidation as well for DRP to be sanctioned. (The) DRP was pushed for consideration by banks at the insistence of top officials from GOI (Government of India) because of influence used by VJM (Vijay Mallya),” said the report.

The report also said that one of the state-owned bank sanctioned a loan of Rs 500 crore to Kingfisher Airlines even as the bank’s credit committee had “pruned down” the proposal for sanctioning the loan to Rs 300 crore. A higher loan was sanctioned to Kingfisher without “any reasonings/ rationale” as the then chairman of the bank “was committed to release Rs 500 crore on account of pressure of the officials of the Ministry of Finance,” the report alleged.

The serious fraud office report has cited another instance where bank documents were changed when a public sector bank lent money. According to the report, the copy of loan documents which were submitted to the probe agency did not have a repayment clause in it for a loan of hundreds of crores. However, it says, when the agency questioned the chairman of the credit committee of the bank, the person produced another copy of the document which had a repayment clause in it.

Kingfisher owes over Rs 9,000 crore to at least 17 lenders, including SBI, IDBI Bank, Punjab National Bank, Bank of India, Bank of Baroda and United Bank of India. Mallya has already been declared as a proclaimed offender by a Prevention of Money Laundering Act, (PMLA) Court. Mallya is currently in the UK battling his extradition.

India Refuses to Endorse BRI

More than a year after boycotting the Belt and Road Forum in Beijing, India Sunday again refused to endorse the ambitious Chinese Belt and Road Initiative (BRI). New Delhi was the lone dissenting voice against the project in the joint declaration that was signed Sunday following the conclusion of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) summit in Qingdao, China.

This was a reiteration of the stated Indian position, which was articulated at the SCO Foreign Ministers meet in April. At the time, the SCO declaration had not named India as one of the supporters of the BRI.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi laid the ground for India’s opposition to the project during his plenary speech when he said that India welcomed connectivity projects that respected the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations.

After the two-day SCO summit, the eight full members signed the Qingdao joint declaration but India was missing from the section that referred to the BRI. “The Republic of Kazakhstan, the Kyrgyz Republic, the Islamic Republic of Pakistan, the Russian Federation, the Republic of Tajikistan, and the Republic of Uzbekistan reaffirm their support for the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ proposed by China and affirm that all parties should implement the ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ to promote the ‘Belt and Road’ initiative,” stated the declaration.

The BRI, proposed by Chinese President Xi Jinping in 2013, is aimed at building a trade and infrastructure network connecting Asia with Europe and Africa along ancient trade routes. India has staunchly opposed the project citing the China Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) – an important part of the BRI – that goes through Pakistan-occupied Kashmir (PoK). Citing its opposition to the CPEC, India had skipped the Belt and Road Forum in May last year, which 29 state heads had attended.

“Connectivity in SCO region and in our neighbouring countries is a priority for India. We welcome such new connectivity projects that are inclusive, sustainable and transparent and which respect the sovereignty and territorial integrity of nations,” Modi said in his address during the plenary session of the SCO summit Sunday.

In the 17-page Qingdao declaration, the BRI was the only point in which the names of approving countries were individually mentioned rather than the term “member states”.

The Qingdao declaration that was signed by the member countries also seemed to address the concerns of both India and Pakistan in thefight against terrorism. The declaration was unequivocal in condemning all forms of terrorism but also added that interference in the domestic affairs of other states on the pretence of fighting terrorism and extremism was unacceptable.

“The Member States note that the interference in the domestic affairs of other states under the pretence of combating terrorism and extremism is unacceptable, as well as the use of terrorist, extremist and radical groups for one’s own purposes,” stated the declaration.

In his speech, Modi also mentioned Afghanistan and spoke of a common front against forces destabilising the nation. Indian efforts to help and start capacity building projects in Afghanistan has been taken kindly by Pakistan and the Taliban.

“The situation in Afghanistan is an unfortunate example of terrorism and extremism in our region. I hope that all parties will respect the sentiments with which President Ghani has taken courageous steps for peace. It is our responsibility that causes which threaten Afghan unity, sovereignty, integrity, diversity and democracy in the past will not be repeated,” he said, without mentioning Pakistan.

Modi did, however, exchange pleasantries with Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain twice, during the plenary session and later at the concluding session when the two leaders shook hands.

Modi also coined another acronym SECURE, which he said would facilitate comprehensive security in the SCO region. “I believe there are six dimensions summed up in the English word secure. S stands for the security of citizens, E for economic development for all, C is for connecting the region, U is for uniting our people, R is for respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity and E is for environmental protection,” he said.

Referring to mutual cooperation and improving people to people contact, Modi said that the number of foreign visitors from SCO countries constituted only six per cent of India’s total tourists, which he believed could easily be doubled to 12 per cent. He said India soon planned to organise a food festival of cuisines of SCO countries as well as a shared Buddhist heritage exhibition in India.

Meanwhile, the other joint documents that were adopted by all the member countries included the joint prevention of radicalisation of youth, the programme for combating terrorism, separatism and extremism 2019 to 2021, MoUs within the SCO for MSMEs, trade facilitation, tourism, environment protection, prevention of abuse of narcotic and psychotropic drugs and an anti-drug strategy.

The PM also held bilateral meetings with the leaders of Kazakhstan and Kyrgyzstan.

Chinese President Xi Jinping who chaired the SCO meet said that while hegemony and power politics still persist in this world, there was a growing call for a more just and equitable international order which must be heeded.

“We should promote open and inclusive cooperation for win-win outcomes. We should reject self-centered, short-sighted and closed-door policies. We should uphold WTO rules and support the multilateral trading system so as to build an open world economy,” Xi said during the Plenary session.

He also said that China would provide RMB 30 billion ($4.7 billion) in loans under a framework formed by SCO countries.

This is India’s first participation in the summit as a full-time member of the organisation. India, along with Pakistan, became full-time members during the Astana summit in Kazakhstan in June 2017. The PM flew out of Beijing on Sunday afternoon concluding his two-day visit.

The declaration also showed its support for the Iranian nuclear deal. Iran is presently an observer member of the SCO. Iran’s President Hassan Rouhani who attended the meet had slammed US attempts to impose its own policies on others during his speech.

“The member states deem it important to consistently implement the Joint Comprehensive Plan of Action on the Iranian nuclear programme, and call for participants to strictly observe their obligations with a view to ensuring its full and efficient implementation and promoting peace and stability in the region and globally,” the declaration said.

Rs. 46.66 Crores of Farmers Waved Off in Mohali

MOHALI:

The sub-registrar of cooperative societies, Amarjit Singh, has said that debt relief amounting to Rs 46.66 crore has been provided to aid as many as 5,070 farmers of Mohali distt.

He added that in the first phase, the farmers with land up to 2.5 acres have been covered. “Verification of 1,470 farmers having land up to 2.5 acres is under process and debt of up to Rs 2 lakh would be waived off,” Amarjit said. Any eligible farmer, who has not been covered under this scheme, could contact sub-registrar of cooperative societies.

Amarjit added that Punjab Government under the leadership of chief minister Captain Amrinder Singh is the first government in the country that is waiving off loans up to Rs 2 lakh.

This farm loan waiver scheme will provide a big relief to the debt-ridden farmers and help them strengthen their financial stature. He assured that the process would be pursued with complete transparency.

Endorsing the claim, farmer Naib Singh, a beneficiary of Punjab government’s loan waiver scheme, said, “Captain Amrinder Singh has given a big relief to farmers who are facing financial crisis.”

Naib said that he had taken a loan of Rs 1.10 lakh from a cooperative bank, which would now be waived off. He said that the previous governments had promised to support the farmers, but nothing was done.

“The state government has given a big support to the farmers in the form of debt relief,” he said. Talking about the condition of agriculture in Punjab, he said the traditional crops were not beneficial because the input cost was higher than output.

2 Drug Peddlers With 5 Kg Charas Arrested

CHANDIGARH:

TheNarcotics Control Bureau(NCB) arrested two drug peddlers, including a woman, with 5 kg charas from ISBT, Sector 43 on Sunday morning. The woman had come to the city from Manali to supply contraband to another accused when the NCB arrested them with the contraband. They will be produced in a local court on Monday.

Kuldeep Sharma, suprintendent, NCB said the accused has been identified as Shakuntala Devi, 53, a resident of Manali and Noor Khan, 58, a resident of Kolkata. Sharma said they acted on a tip-off from an informer, who said Shakuntala used to come to ISBT-43 to deliver contraband to a smuggler.

NCB officials laid a trap near ISBT-43 on Sunday morning. Shakuntala stepped out of a Himachal bus with luggage in her hand at around 8am. Noor Khan was waiting for her. When she handed the bag over to Noor khan, NCB sleuths overpowered them. NCB sleuths searched the bag and found 4.960 Kg charas. The contraband was seized and the accused were arrested under the NDPS act.

During investigations, NCB officials said Noor Khan told them he paid Rs 4 lakh to the woman for the contraband two days ago. Khan used to come to the city to take delivery from Shakuntala every month and they met at ISBT-43. After the transaction, Noor Khan would go back to Kolkata and sell the drugs there.

Khan also spent a few years in Iraq, where he worked as a cook.
