Navjot Singh Sidhu’s cross-border “hug diplomacy” would mark the beginning of a long and fruitful political innings.

Sidhu would now hope that his cross-border “hug diplomacy” would mark the beginning of a long and fruitful political innings. Rest assured, his rivals would be throwing a barrage of bouncers and yorkers his way.

Several of his Congress colleagues now say former India opener Navjot Singh Sidhu is not a team player and that the Punjab minister is trying to out-captain the Captain. The spirited showman – who has also delivered witticism-dripping cricket commentary, judged TV comedy shows, been a Bigg Boss contestant, and also appeared in films – finds himself firmly under the political spotlight and appears to be reveling in it, with his eyes fixed on the “Man of the Match” prize.

Sidhu’s aggressive shot play on the political pitch to project himself as a successor to Chief Minister Amarinder Singh has raised the hackles of people in the party and sparked internal ferment.

Buoyed by his visit to Pakistan for the groundbreaking ceremony of the cross-border Kartarpur Sikh pilgrimage corridor, Sidhu, after returning to India, ostentatiously expressed his faith in his party chief. “My captain is Rahul Gandhi and Captain’s (Amarinder Singh’s) captain is also Rahul Gandhi,” he proclaimed.

The remark drew battle lines within the Congress, and cabinet colleagues even demanded his resignation. Sidhu, who quit the BJP in September 2016 and joined the Congress in January 2017, had disregarded the chief minister’s advice to review his decision to go to Pakistan after getting a personal invitation from Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan. Trouble mounted for Sidhu when a photograph of him with Khalistani leader Gopal Singh Chawla went viral on social media, and critics called him out for hobnobbing with the militant suspected of involvement in a grenade attack on a religious gathering in Amritsar.

File image of Navjot Singh Sidhu.

Punjab’s rural development and panchayat minister Tript Rajinder Singh Bajwa, revenue and rehabilitation minister Sukhbinder Singh Sarkaria and sports minister Rana Gurmeet Singh Sodhi led the chorus of demands for his resignation. Many other ministers said Sidhu’s remarks were uncalled for and he should apologise to Captain.

The attacks by those who owe allegiance to the chief minister are aimed at keeping the former batsman, whose big-hitting ability earned him the sobriquet Sixer Sidhu, away from any attempts to project himself as the next top leader of the party in Punjab and also to keep them in the Captain’s good graces.

Sidhu’s previous visit to Pakistan in August — when he hugged the country’s army chief Qamar Javed Bajwa (who promised him opening of the Kartarpur corridor) invited much criticism for the minister from rivals. But he also managed to charm many in Punjab’s Sikh community as the route holds massive religious significance for them. The Gurdwara Darbar Sahib Kartarpur is believed to have been built on the site where Guru Nanak, the founder of the faith, died in the 16th century.

Sidhu, as well as state finance minister Manpreet Singh Badal who joined the Congress in 2016 after dissolving his own People’s Party of Punjab, were both seen as potential successors to Captain Amarinder Singh. Badal, who is the paternal cousin of Shiromani Akali Dal president Sukhbir Singh Badal, had disassociated himself from SAD following a rift. He formed the PPP before the 2012 Assembly polls, but the party was not even able to open its account. Manpreet Badal, who was initially in the limelight owing to his reported closeness to Rahul Gandhi, has since lost some of his sheen.

Senior political analyst from Punjab, Jagtar Singh, says while both Sidhu and Badal are in the race, the final pick will be made by Rahul. “Both the leaders have different styles of working and both are close to Rahul. However, if the party wins 8-10 seats in the Lok Sabha polls, out of a total 13, we will not see any change in the leadership before the next Assembly polls,” he said.

Singh said that while Sidhu’s statement had triggered a controversy, he later back-pedaled and professed that Captain was like a father figure to him.

Many Congress leaders including the Member of Parliament from Ludhiana, Ravneet Singh Bittu, erected hoardings stating “Punjab Da Captain Sadda Captain (Punjab’s Captain is our captain)” to take on Sidhu’s statement that his captain was Rahul Gandhi. These attempts were also seen as an outpouring of resentment of those leaders who failed to shape themselves as political heirs to Captain Amarinder Singh and do not want Sidhu to take that place. Sidhu, who would previously visited Ludhiana frequently, cut down on the trips as most of the local MLAs united against him.

Senior Congress leaders in the state are also worried about the appreciation that has come in for Sidhu, even from some political opponents. Veteran Punjab politician Ranjit Singh Brahmpura, who was expelled by SAD in November, said the opening of the Kartarpur corridor was due to the ingenuity of Sidhu and his personal relations with Pakistan prime minister Imran Khan. “The credit for Kartarpur corridor goes to Sidhu,” said Brahmpura, who floated a new party on 2 December in concert with some other expelled SAD leaders, and plans to put up a new political front in Punjab.

On 3 December, a special resolution was passed in a Punjab cabinet meeting chaired by Captain Amarinder Singh, appreciating the Narendra Modi-led central government for opening of the corridor. Surprisingly, Sidhu, who considers that his hug worked wonders, did not find any mention in this declaration made by his own government.

What is disconcerting for some senior Congress leaders is the fact that Sidhu, despite jumping over from the BJP just ahead of the 2017 Assembly polls, managed to leapfrog many staunch MLAs from the state’s ruling party to bag a cabinet post.

A rival camp of Captain Amarinder Singh within the Congress led by former party state chief Pratap Singh Bajwa has also been applauding Sidhu. Bajwa said Sidhu had gone to Pakistan in his personal capacity and there was no need to criticise him.

Narinder Kumar Dogra, professor in the political science department of Patiala’s Punjabi University, said Sidhu might have got some indications from the party high command because of which he is presenting himself as the successor of Captain Amarinder Singh. “Captain has a good hold on politics in Punjab. As a result, Sidhu is well aware that he can only present himself as his future heir. But he is definitely building the base,” said Dogra.

Sidhu would now hope that his cross-border “hug diplomacy” would mark the beginning of a long and fruitful political innings. Rest assured, his rivals would be throwing a barrage of bouncers and yorkers his way.

MP CM Shivraj Singh Chouhan says BJP will form govt

Exit polls released on Friday predicted a possibility of Congress upsetting the BJP.

Shivraj Singh Chouhan on Saturday expressed confidence that the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) would emerge victorious in Madhya Pradesh that recently went to elections. While the counting will take place on December 11, several exit polls have given the Congress an edge in the state.

Speaking to reporters in Umaria, the MP Chief Minister, who is eyeing a second 5-year-term after completing 13 years in power this November, commented on the exit poll results released on Friday.

“There cannot be a surveyor bigger than me, someone who is among the people day in and day out. Therefore I am saying this confidently that BJP will form the government,” Chouhan asserted.

“This is important for people, poor, farmers, children and women,” he added stressing that there cannot be a better bet for the people of his state than the BJP.

According to a majority of the exit polls, the Congress will have the upper hand in the state.

According to India Today-Axis poll, the Congress might win 104-122 seats in the 230-seat assembly thus narrowly surpassing the majority mark of 116. The BJP was given 102-120 seats and others could end up with 4-11 seats.

Similarly CSDS-ABP exit poll suggested that the BJP might end up with 94 seats as against 126 of the Congress and 10 of others.

BJP might get 90-106 seats, according to CVoter-Republic TV, and the Congress between 110 and 126 seats, which would mean a clear victory for the party led by Rahul Gandhi.

In the exit poll conducted by NewsX-Neta, the Congress got higher seats than the BJP but four short of the majority mark. The poll predicted that the Congress might win 114 seats, the BJP might get 106 with 12 seats going to others.

Times Now-CNX, on the other hand, predicted a thumping BJP victory in MP with 126 seats as against 89 of Congress. Republic-Jan Ki Baat exit poll, too, gave the BJP an edge with 108-128 seats over Congress’ 95-115, with seven seats going to others.

India TV gave the BJP 122-130 seats and 86-92 to Congress with 12-18 seats to others.

An average of opinion polls done before 9 November 2018 had predicted that the BJP will end up as the single largest party with 113 seats but without a majority. The exit polls clearly indicated that the BJP’s strength in the state is much weaker than in the last elections when it won 166 seats.

The BJP has been in power in Madhya Pradesh since 2003.

BJP approaches EC over Rahul Gandhi interview calls it ‘Shining example of paid news’

The BJP in the memorandum said that the interview ‘goes against the very spirit and parameters of the permitted coverage in the compendium of poll panel’s compendium of instructions on the media related matters’.

The BJP on Friday approached the Election Commission demanding action against the Congress and its president Rahul Gandhi for his interview published in an English daily on Thursday, claiming it is a “shining example” of paid news.

A delegation including union ministers JP Nadda, Mukhtar Abbas Naqvi and BJP’s media in-charge Anil Baluni submitted a memorandum to the poll panel enclosing a copy of the interview that was published from Hyderabad, saying “the reporting by way of an interview…is shining example of paid news.”

Addressing the media after meeting the poll panel officials, Naqvi said,”Just a day before the polling in Telangana and Rajasthan, Rahul Gandhi through his interview, which was actually a paid news, tried to influence voters and electoral process also. It is a violation of electoral reforms.”

Naqvi further said that Gandhi in his interview cited a survey to claim that the Congress is winning and BJP is losing elections in all the five states.

“This news (interview) comes under the category of paid news. As per the rules no campaigning or such interviews should be done 48 hours before the polling. Gandhi intentionally tried to influence voters and free and fair process of election. We demand an immediate action against him and his party,” he said.

The BJP in the memorandum further said that the interview “goes against the very spirit and parameters of the permitted coverage in the compendium of poll panel’s compendium of instructions on the media related matters”.

The Congress alleged that the raid on the house of Ramesh Kumar Sharma was illegal

The Congress alleged that the raid on the house of Ramesh Kumar Sharma was illegal.

The Congress lashed out at the Modi government over the Enforcement Directorate’s raid on the house of a senior journalist in connection with alleged defence deals by three persons linked to firms of Robert Vadra.

The searches, ED officials said, were carried out in Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru, and were also related to cases of assets held abroad.

The Congress lashed out at the Modi government over the Enforcement Directorate’s raid on the house of a senior journalist in connection with alleged defence deals by three persons linked to firms of Robert Vadra.

Party spokesperson Randeep Singh Surjewala said that the searches were “vendetta politics” by the Modi government, which is “unnerved” by the prospect of defeat in the assembly elections in five states.

Surjewala alleged that raid on the house of Ramesh Kumar Sharma, the father-in-law of one of the persons linked to Vadra, was “illegal”.

“Ramesh Kumar Sharma is a 64-year-old man and the vice-president on Hindustan Times. They have illegally raided his house without a warrant and detained him and his wife for 10 hours. They also ransacked his house,” Surjewala alleged.

Attacking Prime Minister Narendra Modi over the searches and especially the raid on Sharma’s house, Surjewala said that it is an attack on the freedom of press.

“Is this how the family of a journalist should be treated? Will you enter and vandalise any journalist’s home in this manner? Is this not an attack on freedom of press?” Surjewala said.

“Who gave Modi-ji this right? He must answer what kind of rule of law attacks journalists,” the Congress spokesperson said.

Surjewala also alleged that the raids were conducted on the offices of Vadra without any FIR or search warrant.

On Friday, the ED raided the premises of three persons, two of them linked to Vadra – Rahul Gandhi’s brother-in-law. The agency reportedly said that the suspects had acquired assets abroad, allegedly using commissions from the defence deals.

The searches were conducted in the Delhi-NCR and Bengaluru.

Mehbooba pitches for hill councils for Pir Panjal, Chenab

PDP president and former Jammu and Kashmir chief minister Mehbooba Mufti addresses a press conference in Srinagar, on Dec 7, 2018.

Mehbooba’s demand has triggered sharp reactions and is being seen as an attempt to divide the Jammu region.

Having threatened disciplinary action against three prominent activists of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) about 15 years ago when they demanded divisional status for the Muslim dominated areas along the river Chenab, in a U-turn now, the PDP president Mehbooba Mufti has herself pitched for the demand in a bid to revive her party’s political base in these areas.

Mehbooba’s demand has come at a time when Governor Satyapal Malik was reportedly considering favourably the demand of divisional status for the Ladakh region that remains landlocked during the winters when the approach roads to the cold desert area get disconnected for nearly five months from Srinagar and Himachal Pradesh due to heavy snow.

The twin districts of Leh and Kargil in the Ladakh region are presently attached with the Kashmir division and the demand for a separate division for the area has been coming up for the past several years.

Mehbooba, who did not allow her partymen to raise the demand when the PDP was twice in power, has threatened that the PDP would launch an agitation if the “Pir-Panchal region”, consisting of Rajouri and Poonch districts and the “Chenab Valley region” consisting of the districts of Doda, Kishtwar and Ramban districts, were not delinked from Jammu and granted status of separate division.

It is worth mentioning that sometime around 2003 when her father Mufti Sayeed was chief minister and Mehbooba was heading the PDP, she had issued a disciplinary notice to her party leaders, Mohammad Sharif Tariq, Chowdhary Zulfikar, and Nisar Ahmad Khan for raising the demand for divisional status for these areas.

Mehbooba’s demand has triggered sharp reactions and is being seen as an attempt to divide the Jammu region.

The state spokesman of BJP, Brigadier Anil Gupta (Retired), claimed that the demand of Mehbooba exhibits her “communal and opportunistic” mindset. She was pursuing her hidden agenda of dividing the Hindus and Muslims of the Jammu region, he alleged.

Gupta said that by asking the National Conference and other Kashmir-centric parties to endorse her demand, Mehbooba has exposed the ambition of Kashmiri leadership to continue their domination over the Jammu and Ladakh regions.

Captain Anil Gaur (Retired), who had recently quit from the PDP for the party’s alleged anti-Jammu ideology, described Mehbooba’s demand as a “ploy” to divide the Jammu division. “Why did she not implement her plans when she herself was chief minister of the state,” he asked. She was probably trying to sabotage Ladakh’s demand for divisional status, he alleged.

These districts have always been part of the Jammu division and the Kashmir-centric political parties have been trying to create a wedge by calling these as “Chenab Valley” and “Pir-Panchal Range”, said Subhash Sharma, a political commentator.
