Modi Mamnoon Shook Hands

New Delhi: Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Sunday shook hands with Pakistan’s president Mamnoon Hussain at China’s Qingdao on Sunday after leaders of a China and Russia led Eurasian bloc signed a series of agreements aimed at boosting cooperation within the grouping.

Modi and Hussain, who were seen standing on opposite ends during a family photograph of the leaders of the Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) grouping, were also seen exchanging words in a cordial manner. The exchange took place as Modi walked towards Chinese president and SCO host Xi Jinping. After shaking hands with Xi, Modi also extended his hand to Hussain who was standing beside Xi. The two were then seen walking off the stage together.

The picture presented by the two contrasted markedly with the current state of ties between India and Pakistan—with almost daily violations of a 2003 ceasefire pact between the two neighbours that was regarded as a major confidence building measure when it was put in place more than a decade ago. According to news reports on Sunday, Indian security forces in Kashmir killed six terrorists, foiling a bid to infiltrate into India.

Pakistan’s support to terrorism in Kashmir and other parts of India is seen as the major stumbling block in normalising ties between the two countries, who have fought four wars since 1947. Pakistan denies India’s charges that supports any anti-India terrorist group, citing itself too as a victim of terrorism. Official talks between the two countries have been suspended since 2013 and many attempts to restart the dialogue since Modi took office in May 2014 have come to naught.

In recent days, the two countries have been looking at putting in place some humanitarian steps that could possibly lead to an eventual thaw in ties perhaps after the 25 July polls in Pakistan, according to people familiar with the developments.

Priyanka (ABC) Apologize, Still to Continue Telecast

Hindu nationalists in India have attacked movies and popular culture in the recent years. Earlier this year, a section of extremists made violent protests and threatened actors over the release of Bollywood film “Padmaavat”, which showed a Muslim ruler pursuing a Hindu queen. In 2016, an Indian super star Aamir Khan, after backlash over his comments on intolerance in India, was dropped as the ambassador of an online retail company: claims ABC

After muslim extremists now former Miss India World is pronouncing Hindu sentiments as Hindu Terror; although the US television studio ABC has apologies to Indian fans of its crime drama “Quantico” after an episode featuring Indian nationalists trying to frame Pakistan in a terrorist plot sparked online outrage against Bollywood actor Priyanka Chopra, who plays a lead role in the show.

“The episode has stirred a lot of emotion, much of which is unfairly aimed at Priyanka Chopra, who didn’t create the show, nor does she write or direct it,” said Walt Disney-owned ABC in its statement.

The 35-year-old Bollywood star, has earlier been admired for her ability to cross over and achieve success in Hollywood, which has been rare for Indian actors.

But after the recent Quantico episode, she has faced online attacks at home, and even some calls to boycott her work and the brands that she endorses.

Others called on the government to black out the scene where Priyanka, who stars as an FBI agent in the series, holds up sacred Hindu prayer beads as evidence that the plotter in the episode, planning to detonate a nuclear bomb in New York, was an Indian nationalist.

“The myth of Hindu terror, by a fake story, enters American television with the help of Priyanka Chopra. Would any Pakistani actress betray Pakistan or Islam the way she betrays India and Hinduism?”, David Frawley, a Hindu scholar based in the United States, tweeted.

ABC, in its statement, said: “The show has featured antagonists of many different ethnicities and backgrounds, but in this case we inadvertently and regrettably stepped into a complex political issue. It was certainly not our intention to offend anyone,”

The statement further said that Priyanka Chopra had no involvement in the storylines depicted in the series.

Mamnoon Hussain meets Tajik counterpart at SCO18

QINGDAO: Pakistani President Mamnoon Hussain and his Chinese counterpart, Xi Jinping, met Saturday on the sidelines of the 18th Shanghai Cooperation Organisation (SCO) Summit taking place here in the city.

On the second day of the multi-nation event that was broadcasted live on the Chinese and international media, the two leaders had a detailed discussion wherein the two exchanged thoughts on the Sino-Pak bilateral linkages.

Further, Mamnoon congratulated Xi on being elected the general-secretary of the Communist Party of China for the second time. The latter, on his part, applauded the former over Pakistan’s joining the SCO summit for the first time as an official full-time member.

Xi noted that Pak-China relations have enjoyed a favourable momentum over recent years. The strategic cooperation between the two ally nations is not only an asset for them but also provides a model for building a new type of international, all-weather friendship.

As the SCO summit came to its conclusion, the leaders of the nations — both member and observer states — also gathered for a family photo.

Later in the day, Mamnoon met his Tajik counterpart Emomali Rahmon, where the two discussed efforts to increase bilateral trade between the two countries.

Pervez Musharraf no more Pakistani Citizen

Pakistan’s ministry of internal affairs on Thursday asked the National Database and Registration Authority (Nadra) and the Directorate General of Immigration & Passports to suspend the national identity card and passport of former President Pervez Musharraf, country’s leading newspaper Dawn reported. The move would freeze Musharraf’s bank accounts and will also restrict the retired General from travelling abroad.

A special court while hearing a treason case against the former General on March 8 had directed the interior ministry to suspend Musharraf’s passport and national identity card. However, the implementation of the order was delayed as a certain time limit was granted to the former president to comply with the court’s earlier directives.

Responding to the termination of Musharraf’s passport and identity card, an official from Nadra said they had only received verbal directives and are stilling waiting for a written confirmation in this regard.  A Nadra spokesman on Thursday, the last day of the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz government, neither confirmed nor denied the move to suspend Musharraf’s passport.

The court in its order on March 8 had also directed interior ministry along with other departments, divisions and agencies to take appropriate measures for the arrest of Musharraf and attachment of his assets in UAE if the General failed to submit a written request for security during his appearance before the court within seven days.

Musharraf has been charged with treason for subverting the constitution by declaring a state of emergency in November 2007. The leader was restricted from travelling abroad by courts after he returned to Pakistan in March 2013, ending his self-imposed exile. Citing medical treatment, the former President was allowed to travel to Dubai in March 2016 and since then he has not returned.

Indian Army will respond to non/provocative attack: Sitharaman

The Indian Army would continue to respect a ceasefire in Kashmir announced to coincide with the ongoing Muslim holy month of Ramzan but added that no unprovoked attack — from either militants or from across the border — would go unanswered, defence minister Nirmala Sitharaman said on Tuesday at a press conference on the occasion of the NDA government completing four years in office on 26 May.

Sitharaman said the army was given the right to adequately respond to any cross-border attacks or unprovoked firing from across the Line of Control and international border.

Last month, the Indian home ministry had announced a suspension of security operations against militants in Kashmir during Ramzan, which started on May 17.

There are a number of militant groups operating in Kashmir whom India accuses of being supported by Pakistan, a charge Pakistan denies.

On India-Russia defence cooperation, Sitharaman said India had very clearly conveyed to the US that the cooperation will continue. This would also include the deal for S-400 Triumf air defence missile systems for the Indian Air Force, notwithstanding the American sanctions against Moscow.

“In all our engagements with the US, we have clearly explained how India and Russia’s defence cooperation has been going on for a long time and that it is a time-tested relationship. We have mentioned that CAATSA cannot impact the India-Russia defence cooperation,” Sitharaman said.

Pakistani man held for illegal stay and blackmailing Indian wife in Hyd.

The Cyber Crime Police in Hyderabad on Friday said that they arrested a Pakistani National, for illegally entering the country and marrying an Indian woman fraudulently by lying about his citizenship.

The police also said that the accused blackmailed his wife and her daughter, and also ‘sold’ obscene pictures of the duo, which were later uploaded on the internet.

The incident came to light after the wife approached the police and filed a complaint.

The accused has been identified as 41-year-old Mohd Usman Ikram alias Mohd Abbas Ikram, who was staying at Chanderghat.

The complainant told the police that while she was working in Dubai, she married one Ikram, who deceived her stating that he was an Indian Muslim from Delhi. However, she later discovered that he is a Pakistani National.

“After she came back to India, the accused too came to India saying that he was on a visit visa for six months. Later, the complainant came to know that he came to India illegally via Nepal,” the police said in a press release.

The woman, who was previously married and had two children, alleged that Ikram had secretly shot obscene photographs and videos of her daughter when she was hardly 12 years old and sold the clipping to some person, which went viral.

“The accused also sent a message on WhatsApp to a friend of his wife, stating that he will expose the daughter’s nude photos publicly and tried to blackmail her. The accused used to torture the complainant for money and whenever she refused, he beat her severely,” the police said.

Based on the complaint, a case was registered and the police began their investigation.

According to a preliminary inquiry, the cyber crime police found that Ikram hailed from Punjab state in Pakistan and had entered Nepal from Pakistan by air, from where he illegally crossed the border by road and arrived at Delhi and then at Hyderabad.

“After arriving in India, he had created fake residential documents and education degrees through various agents and had been doing sundry jobs in private firms. His antecedents and activities are further being verified,” the police said.
