Mangal Pandey ‘The Lone Runner’

The chapters of India’s independence chapter began to be written in true sense in 1857 but it is said that the rebel of the rebellion against Angaji’s rule was played by the soldier with one of them. The aura of that soldier was such that when the forerunners ordered the other soldiers to confront him, they all retreated and the turn of martyrdom turned out to be the executioners refused to hang him.

Perhaps that Indian soldier was a warrior of independence. He was none other than Mangal Pandey, born in 1827 in a Sarayuparan Brahmin family in Nagawa, a small village in Ballia, Uttar Pradesh. Today (July 19th) is the birth anniversary of Mangal Pandey. Pandey was admitted to the army of East India Company at the age of 22 as a constable. He was a soldier of the East India Company’s 34th Bengal Infantry. In the memory of Mangal Pandey, the Government of India issued a stamp in 1984. Films and dramas have become their life. Historians have different opinions about Mangal Pandey’s revolt.

One of the historians wrote that rumors of Indian soldier being killed by the European soldiers for making and opposing Indian soldiers forcibly terrorized Mangal Pandey and on 29 March 1857, in the drunken cannabis, Had rebelled against the rule. Some historians said that due to the rebellion he became an enfield gun, in which the cartridge had to be cut off by teeth. When the soldiers came to know that the outer shell of the cartridge was made of cow and pig fat to save the seal, Mangal Pandey had raised the voice against it. English historian Kim E. Wagner wrote in his book “The Great Fear of 1857 – Rumors, Conspiracy and Making of the Indian Unmissing”, “Knowing the fear of the sepoys, Major General J. B. Heyersi, on the Hindustani soldiers It was quite rumored to have called the assault as rumor, but it is quite possible that the heresy was able to spoil the situation by confirming the rumors reached to the soldiers. The soldiers who were terrorized by Major General’s speech were also Mangal Pandey of the 34th Bengal Native Infantry. “

British historian Rosie Lilvelan Jones has also presented some similar arguments in his book “The Great Upcoming In India 1857 – 58 Untold Stories, Indian and British”. According to these historians, Mangal Pandey fired at Sergeant Major James Hewison but he survived. This incident has been told by the hand of Sheikh Paltu. During the conflict, when the lieutenant Benpade Bag reached the spot, Pandey shot him, but the target missed, Bagh also fired on Pandey with his pistol, he did not even target. If the British officers asked the soldiers to capture Mangal Pandey, all the chase was withdrawn. Paltu tried to overcome Pandey.According to Jones, when Paltu told the jamadar Ishwari Pandey that he sent four soldiers to capture Mangal Pandey, Ishwari Prasad had told Paltu a gun and said that if Mangal does not let Pandey escape then he will shoot him.

According to Jones, Mangal Pandey has cursed his colleagues and said that “you people have provoked me and now you are not with me”, and many pedestrians, including the cavalry, come towards him, Pandey has put a gun in his chest with his chest The trigger was pressed by thumb but he was saved. On April 8, 1857, Pandey was executed by the hangers of Kolkata on refusal by local hangers.

Ishwar Prasad was also hanged after Mangal Pandey. This spark of rebellion imposed by Mangal Pandey is not extinguished again. After a month, on May 10, 1857, a revolt was started in Meerut Cantonment and after seeing this fire took the whole of North India into its grip. It is said that the British had imposed 34,735 laws on Indian revolt with the rebellion so that no one like Mangal Pandey could retain his head again.

Senator, lawyers not allowed to meet Nawaz

The Adiala jail authorities on Tuesday denied permission to a senator and workers of PML-N women and lawyers wings to meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

Later, they held a protest against the jail superintendent and other officials outside the Adiala jail.

They chanted slogans against the jail authorities and in favour of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar.

According to sources, PML-N Senator Nuzhat Sadiq arrived at Adiala jail to meet Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

The jail authorities told the senator that under the laws, she could meet the former premier and Maryam Nawaz only on Thursday. The senator returned home without seeing her leaders.

A group of PML-N Women Wing workers from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa led by President Tahira Bukhari also reached Adiala jail to show solidarity with the jailed former prime minister and his daughter.

The women wing workers staged a protest outside the jail and pledged to support Nawaz Sharif in the upcoming general elections.

Similarly, a delegation of lawyers associated with PML-N Lawyers Wing Rawalpindi also visited Adiala jail and tried to meet the detained party Quaid. But they too were denied permission after which they staged a protest.

They chanted slogans against the government and the jail administration and in favour of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter.

Jupiter’s Moon Count Reaches 79, Including Tiny ‘Oddball’

Galileo detected Jupiter’s four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto in 1610. The latest count of 79 known planets includes eight that have not been seen for several years.

Astronomers are still finding moons at Jupiter, 400 years after Galileo used his spyglass to spot the first ones.

The latest discovery of a dozen small moons brings the total to 79, the most of any planet in our solar system.

Scientists were looking for objects on the fringes of the solar system last year when they pointed their telescopes close to Jupiter’s backyard, according to Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington.

They saw a new group of objects moving around the giant gas planet but didn’t know whether they were moons or asteroids passing near Jupiter.

“There was no eureka moment,” said Sheppard, who led the team of astronomers. “It took a year to figure out what these objects were.”

They all turned out to be moons of Jupiter. The confirmation of 10 was announced Tuesday. Two were confirmed earlier.

The moons had not been spotted before because they are tiny. They are about one to two kilometers (miles) across, said astronomer Gareth Williams of the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

And he thinks Jupiter might have even more moons just as small waiting to be found.

“We just haven’t observed them enough,” said Williams, who helped confirm the moons’ orbits.

The team is calling one of the new moons an ‘oddball’ because of its unusual orbit. Sheppard’s girlfriend came up with a name for it: Valetudo, the great-granddaughter of the Roman god Jupiter.

Valetudo is in Jupiter’s distant, outer swarm of moons that circles in the opposite direction of the planet’s rotation. Yet it’s orbiting in the same direction as the planet, against the swarm’s traffic.

“This moon is going down the highway the wrong way,” Sheppard said.

Scientists believe moons like Valetudo and its siblings appeared soon after Jupiter formed. The planet must have acted like a vacuum, sucking up all the material that was around it. Some of that debris was captured as moons.

“What astonishes me about these moons is that they’re the remnants of what the planet formed from,” he said.

Telescopes in Chile, Hawaii and Arizona were used for the latest discovery and confirmation.

Galileo detected Jupiter’s four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto in 1610. The latest count of 79 known planets includes eight that have not been seen for several years. Saturn is next with 61, followed by Uranus with 27 and Neptune with 14.

Mars has two, Earth has one and Mercury and Venus have none.

“We cannot allow these corrupt officers from Islamabad to continue the atrocities. It is totally unacceptable,” Rohrabacher

Dana Rohrabacher who was earlier a close friend of Pakistan, alleged that the corrupt Pakistani Army officers are involved in the extrajudicial killing of Mohajirs in Karachi.

Pakistan’s powerful army is supporting religious extremism in the country, an influential US lawmaker has alleged as he voiced his support to the rights of the Mohajir community.

The term Mohajir is used to describe the Urdu-speaking immigrants who left India in 1947 and came to Pakistan. A large chunk of them settled in the Sindh province.

Addressing the participants of the conference ‘Mohajir Day on the Capitol Hill’, organised by the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), Congressman Dana Rohrabacher alleged that the corrupt Pakistani Army officers are involved in the extrajudicial killing of Mohajirs in Karachi.

“They are openly supporting religious extremists. This is not acceptable at any cost,” said Congressman Rohrabacher, a close aide to former US president Ronald Regan.

Rohrabacher, the lawmaker from California who was earlier a close friend of Pakistan, is now one of the strongest critics of Islamabad for it providing safe heaven to terrorists.

The conference was attended by workers and office bearers of MQM from 12 chapters of the US, Canada and the UK, along with representatives of think-tanks, senior journalists, bloggers and people from different walks of life.

A member of the House Foreign Affairs, Rohrabacher said that Mohajirs in general and workers of MQM are suffering in Pakistan.

“I extend my full support to them,” he said, adding that every citizen has every right to defend his freedom and basic rights and the United States is fully aware of the crimes of the corrupt officers from Islamabad.

“We cannot allow these corrupt officers from Islamabad to continue the atrocities. It is totally unacceptable,” Rohrabacher said, adding that it is not at all acceptable that Islamabad is openly supporting the religious extremists and fanatics.

He said “we want to make Karachi a peaceful and prosperous city like Singapore and we will support MQM to get rid of these atrocities”.

Addressing the participants, Nadeem Ehsan, convener of MQM, said that the basic human rights of Mohajirs are violated and they are not even allowed to vote to whom they want, and therefore, the founder and leader of MQM, Altaf Hussain has announced to boycott the upcoming elections on July 25.

Jadhav case, ICJ will now fix the matter for hearing

Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav an ex commander of Indian navy, owned a cargo business in Iran and had been working out of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar ports. “It appears that he strayed into Pakistani waters. But there is also a possibility that he was lured into Pakistan sometime back and fake documents were created on him by the ISI.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 23 gave a timeline to both Pakistan and India for filing another round of memorials in the case.

Foreign Office Director General for India Dr. Fareeha Bugti submitted the reply on Tuesday, Radio Pakistan reported, quoting the Foreign Office spokesperson.

Pakistan in its rejoinder, gave detailed answers to India’s submissions to the international court, the spokesperson said, adding that Pakistan also responded to Indian objections in over 400 pages reply.
Pakistan’s counter-memorial was in response to pleadings filed by India in the Hague-based ICJ on April 17.

The ICJ will now fix the matter for hearing.

India had moved the ICJ in May last year after Jadhav, 48, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism.

A 10-member bench of the ICJ on May 18, 2017 had restrained Pakistan from executing Jadhav till adjudication of the case

LTVs to minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh libralised

Since 2011, nearly 30,000 Pakistanis have been granted long-term visas and, currently, 1,500 such applications are pending, says Home Ministry

The Home Ministry has further liberalised the process for granting long-term visas (LTVs) to minorities from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh.

The move comes days after one of its officials was arrested by the Rajasthan Anti-Corruption Bureau for allegedly extorting money from Pakistani Hindu migrants for their visa extension, visa transfer and grant of citizenship.

The Home Ministry has reduced the time limit for security clearance of applicants from 45 days to 21 days.

After an application reaches the central system, it’s forwarded to three agencies for verification — the State government, the Intelligence Bureau and the Home Ministry.

“The State government, through the local police, has to run a background check on the applicants who has applied for an LTV. If the State doesn’t reply within 21 days, the system will log them out and the application will be deemed to be cleared. If, in future, there is a security implication, the onus will be on the State government,” a senior government official said.

Once the replies from all agencies are fed in the system, the application is automatically processed.

A Home Ministry official said that since 2011, nearly 30,000 Pakistanis had been granted LTVs and, currently, 1,500 such applications were pending. The LTVs are precursors to citizenship, based on the report given by the State governments.

The visa facility, first introduced in 2011 for persecuted Hindus from Pakistan in 2011, was further liberalised after the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government came to power in 2014. The LTVs granted to Pakistani Hindus from 2011 to 2014 stood at 14,726.

From January 1, 2015 to July 16 this year, 15,244 LTVs were issued.

In 2015, the government granted concessions to Bangladeshi, Pakistani and Afghanistan nationals belonging to the Hindu, Buddhist, Sikh, Christian and Jain communities, who entered India on or before December 31, 2014, in respect of their entry and stay in India without proper documents or after the expiry of relevant documents.

It also empowered revenue authorities in some States, not including Assam, to allow them to register properties and take up employment.

The Citizenship Amendment Bill, 2015 that proposes citizenship to Hindus, Jains, Sikhs, Parsis, Christians and Buddhists from Pakistan, Afghanistan and Bangladesh who came to India before 2014 has hit a hurdle.

There has been strong resistance to the Bill in Assam as it seeks to grant citizenship to non-Muslims from Bangladesh. Several political and civil groups in Assam have said that the Bill will pave the way for granting citizenship to illegal Hindu immigrants from Bangladesh in Assam in violation of the Assam Accord, 1985.

There have been no exact numbers of such minority refugees from these countries but officials put the figure at around 2 lakh Hindu and Sikh refugees from Bangladesh, Pakistan and Afghanistan living in India.

There are 400 Pakistani Hindu refugee settlements in cities such as Jodhpur, Jaisalmer, Bikaner and Jaipur.

Hindu refugees from Bangladesh mostly live in West Bengal and the northeastern States.
