The Shiv Sena on today reacted on former Pakistani cricketer Shahid Afridi’s remarks that his country “does not want Kashmir” and said all sane Pakistanis would endorse the view.
According to the Sena, in an editorial in its mouthpiece ‘Saamana’, said Pakistan’s government and the military chief gave more impetus on trying to harm India than governing the country as a result of which it has to seek external financial aid even 70 years after Independence.
Former all-round cricketer of Pakistan Shahid Afridi on Wednesday proposed that Pakistan-occupied Kashmir should be given “independence”, saying the country does not want the region as it cannot even manage its four provinces.
Afridi was addressing students in London when he is learnt to have the statement. The video, in which he is heard saying that Pakistan is not interested in Kashmir and since the country is against giving it to India, the region should be given independence, has gone viral on the social media.
“I say Pakistan doesn’t want Kashmir. Don’t give it to India either. Let Kashmir be independent. At least humanity will be alive. Let people not die,” he said.
He went on add that “humanity” or “insaniyat” should be prioritised.
Afridi later blamed the Indian media for quoting him.
The Sena’s editorial Friday stated, “Pakistan has become so poor in trying to support terrorism and corruption that it now is left with only the option of selling cattle and vehicles from the Prime Minister’s residence.”
It claimed that Pakistan was on the verge of a financial breakdown and it had been relegated to begging for a bailout from countries like China after the International Monetary Fund (IMF) turned down its aid request.
“If the country needs financial oxygen to keep its economy going, alive, how will it take care of Kashmir? Not just Afridi, every sane Pakistani will hold the same view. However, who asks the common man there?” the editorial questioned.
“The government and the military chief there give more impetus on harming India than doing good for its people. Therefore, they have to beg for aid even 70 years after Independence,” it said.
The Sena further dubbed Afridi as “anti-Indian” and said he has, in the past, made derogatory statements against India.
Citing examples, it said Afridi had shown a soft corner for 13 terrorists eliminated by Indian security forces and has been repeatedly advocating Independence for Kashmir.
A day after Afridi’s remarks, Home Minister Rajnath Singh on Thursday said the former cricketer’s comment that his country could not even manage its four provinces, was right.
Addressing a press conference in Raipur, the minister said, “What is he said is right. They are not able to manage Pakistan. How can they manage Kashmir? Kashmir is and will be a part of India.”
Dassault Aviation chief Executive officer(CEO) Eric Trappier in an exclusive interview to ANI rubbished allegations made by Congress Party president Rahul Gandhi that the former lied about the details of the Dassault – Reliane Joint Venture(JV) for offset contracts in the Rafael Jet Deal
“I don’t lie. The truth I declared before and the statements I made are true. I don’t have a reputation of lying. In my position as CEO, you don’t lie,” said Trappier when asked to respond to rahul Gandhi’s charge that Dassault was covering up for Possible cronyism in awarding the offset deal to Anil Ambani led Reliance Group.
Rahul Gandhi, in a press conference on November 2, alleged that Dassault invested Rs 284 Crore in a loss making company promoted by Anil Ambani which was used to procure land in Nagpur. “ It is clear the Dassault CEO is lying. If an inquiry starts in this Modi is not going to survive it, Guaranteed,” added Gandhi.
Trappier said that they had prior experience dealing with the Congress party and the comments made by the congress president made him sad

Defence Minister Nirmala Sitharaman on Sunday pitched for dialogues between India and China on various issues, saying differences between the two nations should not be allowed to become disputes.
Both India and China should respect each other and resolve issues through dialogues and join hands together for peace and prosperity, Ms. Sitharaman said.
There are various issues such as defence, border disputes, border trades and presence of Indian and Chinese defence forces in the Indian Ocean which can be resolved through continuous dialogues, the minister said.
“Competition is normal, but contest must not turn into conflict. Differences should not be allowed to become disputes, she said in Itanagar.
“Solution lies in dialogue, solution lies in peaceful engagement. But for this, mutual trust should be there.” However, she added, mutual recognition of sensitivity in each country should be respected and resolved through dialogues.
Ms. Sitharaman was delivering the seventh memorial lecture of former RSS activist from Arunachal Pradesh, Rutum Kamgo, on the theme: ‘Towards Bridging the Indo-China Relationship for an Emerging Asia’
On a proposal of Chief Minister Pema Khandu for opening up border trade with China through Bum La Pass, Ms. Sitharaman said trade was possible with the border villages of both the countries, like the current border haats at Nathu La in Sikkim and Moreh in Manipur.
However, she added, the balance of trade between the countries was in favour of China. “Trade between India and China is done in large scale amounting to USD 80-90 billion. But, sadly, we are purchasing from them in huge quantities. But, for our products, their market is not open.”
“We have several products like telecommunication, vegetables, tea, soya, raw sugar, pharmaceuticals etc in which China evinces keen interest,” the Defence Minister said, adding that there were certain areas where both the nations could cooperate, especially in containing terrorism and promoting sustainable development.
The minister termed India and China the growth engines for the entire world, saying that emergence of both the countries would pave the way for an emerging Asia. “Peace, security and development in Asia are possible when India and China are developed. Development of both the nations is possible only when there is mutual respect and understanding among the two countries.”
She quoted Prime Minister Narendra Modi as saying that both the countries should follow the mantra of samman (respect), sambad (dialogue), sahyog(cooperation), shanti (peace) and samriddhi (prosperity) for development.
“There are many multi-lateral institutions in the world like (the) UN, IMF, World Bank etc where representations from country like us with more population and demands are negligible. India and China should raise the issue jointly for mutual benefits,” she added
The Indian Air Force is “very much alive” to emerging threats that could arise in the Indo Pacific region, Air Chief Marshal B.S. Dhanoa said Sunday, and asserted that his force was prepared to deal with any challenge to protect India’s national interests.
He also said there is cause for concern over the rate of modernisation and induction of new equipment in India’s neighbourhood, even as India faces challenges emanating from “unresolved territorial disputes” and “sponsored” non-state and transnational actors. But the IAF is capable of, and is moving ahead, for countering them effectively, he told media persons in an interview.
Asked whether the IAF can play a role in smashing terrorist training camps across the Line of Control in Jammu and Kashmir, he did not rule out such a possibility.
“The IAF is well equipped to take on threats which occur from across the border, be it in the realm of sub conventional or other domains,” the Air Chief Marshal said.
India’s immediate security challenges
Referring to India’s immediate security challenges, without naming China and Pakistan, he said, “The current challenges emanate from unresolved territorial issues, sponsored non-state actors and transnational actors who act against national interests through the global commons.”
“The IAF is prepared 24×7 for any threat and is ready for a befitting response to any contingency with all our available assets,” he told media persons.
Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa also made an indirect reference to China’s rapid modernisation of its air force and also about the infrastructure development Beijing has carried out in the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) bordering India.
“The IAF is well equipped to take on challenges across the entire range of threats that could emanate across our borders. While there is a cause for concern as regards to the rate of modernisation and induction of new equipment in our neighbourhood, the IAF is nevertheless, moving ahead with appropriate measures to cater to these new developments,” he said.
Geo-political influence
Asked whether the IAF was capable of playing a role to expand India’s geo-political influence in the Indo-Pacific region, he replied in the affirmative and talked about IAF’s capabilities including having the second largest fleet of C-17s.
“We have the second largest fleet of C-17s in the world. Therefore, India will pull its heft in helping out friendly nations in times of human distress and humanitarian relief. In addition, the IAF is very much alive to the emerging threats that could arise in the Indo Pacific region,” he said.
At present, the IAF has a fleet of ten C-17 Globemasters, used for strategic airlift missions, transporting troops and cargo for long-range missions.
The US has been pushing for a greater role for India in the Indo-Pacific which is seen by many countries as an effort to contain China’s growing clout in the region.
In November last year, India, the US, Australia and Japan gave shape to the long-pending “Quad” Coalition to develop a new strategy to keep the critical sea routes in the Indo-Pacific free of any influence.
Holistic approach
Air Chief Marshal Dhanoa said the IAF was adopting a holistic approach in harnessing all available resources at its disposal to deal with various security challenges in a collaborative and cohesive manner.
“The gradual shift in the centre of gravity of global financial power from the West to the East has brought many challenges to the fabric of existential peace in the Asia-Pacific,” he said.
“Security is no longer confined to the preservation of territorial integrity alone. It also encompasses a comprehensive concept including all elements of national power,” he added.
On IAF’s ambitious modernisation plan, the Chief of Air Staff said augmenting the fighter squadron strength was his top priority.
“To achieve this, the IAF is looking at new inductions and midlife upgrades. Towards this, MiG-29, Jaguar and Mirage-2000 aircraft are being upgraded in a phased manner in order to equip them with contemporary capabilities,” he said.
Induction of Tejas
He also mentioned the planned induction of 83 Tejas light combat aircraft and 36 Rafale jets.
“Further, case for 114 fighter aircraft is being processed under the Strategic Partnership model of DPP (Defence Procurement Procedure)-16. Other options are also being explored to build up to authorised strength at the earliest,” he added.
The IAF has already started the process to procure a batch of 114 fighter jets.
At present, the IAF has a total of 32 squadrons of fighter jets much below the authorised strength of 42 squadrons.
“The IAF is adopting a holistic approach in harnessing all available resources at its disposal to tackle emerging challenges in a collaborative and cohesive manner,” said the IAF chief.

A day after Sri Lankan President Maithripala Sirisena controversially dissolved Parliament, parties opposed to the decision are preparing for a high stakes legal battle.
Major parties on Saturday decided to move the Supreme Court early next week, challenging Mr. Sirisena’s decision that, they said, violated the Constitution.
The United National Party (UNP) of the deposed Prime Minister, Ranil Wickremesinghe, and its coalition partners will mount a legal challenge, according to their members.
The Sri Lanka Muslim Congress (SLMC), which is part of the UNP-led front, is contemplating court action independent of the coalition as well, a senior member said.
The All Ceylon Makkal Congress (ACMC) is also preparing to petition the Supreme Court on Monday. “This is not because we fear elections, but because we think the President’s actions are completely unconstitutional and against democratic values,” ACMC leader Rishad Bathiudeen told The Hindu.
Further, the Tamil National Alliance (TNA) and the Janatha Vimukthi Peramuna (JVP), which were part of the Opposition in the House that was dissolved, are readying to file petitions in the Supreme Court on Monday.
The TNA will seek an interim order suspending the President’s proclamation on the dissolution of Parliament and calling for general election, party sources said.
Speaking to The Hindu on Saturday, Leader of the Opposition and TNA veteran R. Sampanthan said the action taken by the executive on Friday “contravened” the Constitution.
“I don’t think it can be constitutionally supported,” Mr. Sampanthan said.
“It was a follow-up action to the executive’s earlier actions — removing the prime minister, appointing a new prime minister and proroguing parliament. None of those can be constitutionally backed,” Mr. Sampanthan said.
The President’s move to dissolve Parliament, he said, was to do with “the inability” of the “purported new Prime Minister” to show majority in the House. “It was meant to serve a collateral and ulterior purpose,” he added.
Even as President Sirisena’s decision is being legally disputed, newly sworn-in Prime Minister Mahinda Rajapaksa and his supporters have welcomed early polls that will establish “the will of the people”.
JVP’s national organiser and parliamentarian Bimal Rathnayake told The Hinduthat while the party had been gearing up for elections since last year, “what we need is not just any election. We need a free and fair election. In the current circumstances, that is ruled out.”
Pointing to President Sirisena “violating the Constitution in broad daylight”, he said the Sirisena-Rajapaksa camp was keen on going to polls “only to legitimise all its illegal moves and recent appointments to the new cabinet.” The TNA also said it recognised the democratic spirit of elections but questioned the validity of polls being held in the wake of “unconstitutional” moves.
“Say they conduct elections and get an outcome they don’t like. How can we be sure they won’t dissolve Parliament again?” asked TNA legislator and senior lawyer M.A. Sumanthiran.
All eyes were on the Election Commission on Saturday, to see if the poll watchdog would independently seek the Supreme Court’s opinion on the matter. Following a meeting of its three commissioners, sources told The Hindu that one of them was of the view that “there was no vacancy in Parliament” and hence the question of holding polls did not arise.
The remaining two, however, had underscored the need to follow the President’s gazette notification and had reportedly asked the Commissioner General to begin preparatory work for the scheduled polls. On seeking the court’s opinion, a source familiar with the discussion said: “The Commission will give its input if it is named as a party [by any other petitioner].

In a significant departure from India’s stand on engaging the Taliban, the government announced it would participate at a “non-official” level, sending two former senior diplomats to attend talks on the Afghanistan peace process to be held in Russia on Thursday.
The talks, known as the “Moscow format” will include a “high-level” delegation from the Taliban as well as a delegation of Afghanistan’s “High Peace Council”, along with twelve countries, and will mark the first time an Indian delegation has been present at the table in talks with the Taliban representatives based in Doha. On Thursday, the United States said it would send representatives from its embassy in Moscow to the talks; Pakistan is also expected to send a representative.
“India supports all efforts at peace and reconciliation in Afghanistan that will preserve unity and plurality, and bring security, stability and prosperity to the country. India’s consistent policy has been that such efforts should be Afghan-led, Afghan-owned, and Afghan-controlled and with participation of the Government of Afghanistan,” said MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar, adding that “our participation at the meeting will be at the non-official level.”
Sources told Demokraticfront.com that India will send two retired diplomats, Amar Sinha and TCA Raghavan as its representatives. While Mr. Sinha was ambassador to Kabul (2013-2016), Mr. Raghavan has held senior posts in the Ministry of External Affairs dealing with Afghanistan and Pakistan and was High Commissioner to Islamabad (2013-2015) and is currently the Director General of the government-run Indian Council of World Affairs (ICWA) think-tank based in Delhi.
The Russian government welcomed India’s decision to participate in the talks on November 9. “We highly regard Indian support in the peace process in Afghanistan and welcome Indian readiness and that of other partner countries in the Moscow format,” the Russian Embassy said in a statement on Thursday.
When asked why India’s stand had undergone a significant shift vis-à-vis the Taliban, government officials said that the decision was the outcome of “close discussions with the Afghanistan government,” and it was felt necessary for India to have a “presence” there.
Analysts see the Modi government’s decision as a significant marker in the Afghan dialogue process, given that India has in the past declined to participate in the Moscow format with the Taliban unless the Afghan government participated. A Russian proposal to hold the talks on September 4 had to be cancelled after the US pulled out of them, and the Ghani government opposed them.
“India would have preferred a direct process between the Ghani government and the Taliban, but since that is not possible, a regional process like this one is the next best option. It is to Russia’s credit that they have been able to bring everyone to the table for this round of talks,” former Ambassador to Afghanistan Rakesh Sood toldthe media persons.
The Ghani government said this week it is allowing the delegation of the High Peace Council (HPC) that is designated to further the reconciliation process with the Taliban on the understanding the Moscow format will lead to direct talks with the Taliban.
“Our agreement with the Russians is that this meeting should lead to direct talks between us (Afghan government) and the Taliban, if it does not happen like this, then this will reflect the intention of the Taliban and this means they (Taliban) are not prepared for peace,” MoFA spokesperson Sibghat Ahmadi was quoted in local reports.
Apart from the Taliban political leadership based in Doha, and the HPC from Kabul, the Russian government has invited delegations from India, Pakistan, the U.S., China, Iran and five Central Asian Republics.
