The state of the economy was the focus of the verbal slugfest between Arun Jaitley and the Congress on Thursday with the union minister saying that abuse is not the answer in political discourse and the opposition party accusing the government of “economic mismanagement”.

The barbs flew thick and fast as Jaitley, who attacked Congress president Rahul Gandhi yesterday saying that wisdom has to be acquired through learning and cannot be inherited, telling Congress communications in-charge Randeep Surjewala that he should respond on facts.

Surjewala accused the union minister of “economic mismanagement” in the country after Jaitley claimed that India had emerged as the fastest growing economy from being among the ‘fragile five’ during UPA. The Congress leader again hit back, saying exports are in a free fall, the promise of two crore jobs a ‘jumla‘, NPAs had soared to Rs 10 lakh crore and loots and scams a norm under this government.

“This is a political discourse. Abuse is not the answer. Please respond to the facts,” Jaitley told Surjewala on Twitter, a response to Wednesday’s attack in which the Congress leader said the union minister was writing “hollow and wasteful” blogs to regain political relevance.

“When you abuse and berate the Congress leadership, even Supreme Court and many others by distorting facts, it is ‘political discourse’ for you, but when you are shown the ‘mirror of truth’ with hard facts, you get ‘unnerved’ and call it ‘abuse’? Politics of Convenience?” Surjewala asked on Thursday in response to Jaitley’s comments on the Congress chief.

Jaitley hit back, saying, “… surely the journey from India being part of the ‘fragile five’ and ‘policy paralysis’ to the world’s fastest-growing economy could not be a result of economic mismanagement — Another case of ignorance.” Surjewala responded by saying that growth under Modi government was at a four-year low. “Exports are in free fall, the promise of 2 crore jobs is a ‘Jumla‘, NPA’s are soaring to Rs 10 lakh crore, investment is down, banks are paralysed and ‘loot scams’ a norm, GST flawed, schemes failing! Isn’t this Economic Mismanagement?”

Jaitley had started the verbal duel by taking a jibe at Gandhi for his “anti-Narendra Modi tirade” on Wednesday.
“In dynastic parties political positions are heritable. Unfortunately, wisdom is not heritable. It has to be acquired through learning,” he said in a post titled “Is Congress Becoming Ideology-less? Is Anti-Modism its only ideology?” he had said on his Facebook page.

Congress spokesperson Jaipal Reddy also condemned the raids and arrests saying no human rights activists should be arrested without a case.

Congress president Rahul Gandhi hit out at the Central government on Tuesday over the arrest of prominent activists for suspected Maoist links, saying there was place for only one NGO — the RSS — in the “new India”.

In a major crackdown in connection with the Bhima-Koregaon riots case of January 2018, the Maharashtra Police raided the homes of various activists in several states on Tuesday  and arrested at least five of them.

“There is only place for one NGO in India and it’s called the RSS. Shut down all other NGOs. Jail all activists and shoot those that complain. Welcome to the new India,” Gandhi said in a tweet with the hashtag Bhima Koregaon.

Earlier, Congress spokesperson Jaipal Reddy condemned the raids and arrests saying no human rights activists should be arrested without a case.

“I condemn those arrests in unqualified terms. No human rights activist should be arrested. For that matter, no Indian can be arrested without proper case.

“I defend the rights of everybody, more particularly human rights protesters. They are selfless NGOs, activists, who are obliged to fight the enveloping darkness of dictatorial tendencies,” he told reporters when asked about the arrests of some activists by the Pune police.

The raids took place at 10 places in Mumbai and Pune in Maharashtra, Goa, Telangana, Chhattisgarh, Delhi, and Haryana.

Those arrested include Vernon Gonsalves, Arun Ferreira, Sudha Bharadwaj, and Gautam Navlakha.

Activists Sudha Bharadwaj and Gautam Navlakha have been put under house arrest, while others will be produced before a court in Pune today.

नई दिल्ली भीमा कोरेगांव हिंसा से जुड़े मामलों में वामपंथी विचारकों की गिरफ्तारी और उनके ठिकानों पर छापेमारी में बुधवार को सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस केस में पांच विचारकों की गिरफ्तारी पर 5 सितंबर तक रोक लगा दी है। मिली जानकारी के अनुसार, सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस मामले में महाराष्ट्र सरकार को नोटिस जारी करते हुए कहा है कि आरोपियों को गिरफ्तार करने की बजाय उन्हें हाउस अरेस्ट किया जाए। सुप्रीम कोर्ट अब इस मामले की अगली सुनवाई 6 सितंबर को होगी। सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने इस मामले में कहा है कि किसी भी लोकतंत्र के लिए सेफ्टी वॉल्व है। अगर असहमति की अनुमति नहीं होगी तो प्रेशर कूकर की तरह फट भी सकता है।

जनवरी में हुए भीमा-कोरेगांव दंगों के सम्बंध में गिरफ्तार पत्रकार और मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ता गौतम नौलखा ने बताया कि यह पूरा मामला इस कायर और प्रतिशोधी सरकार की राजनीतिक असहमति के खिलाफ एक राजनीतिक चाल है। सरकार महाराष्ट्र के भीमा-कोरेगांव दंगों के असली अपराधियों को बचाना चाहती है और इसीलिए उसने कश्मीर से केरल तक अपनी असफलताओं और घोटालों से जनता का ध्यान हटाना चाहती है। नौलखा ने कहा कि राजनीतिक लड़ाई राजनीतिक तरीके से लड़ी जानी चाहिए और मैं इस अवसर का स्वागत करता हूं। मेरा कुछ भी लेना-देना नहीं है। यह तो महाराष्ट्र पुलिस है, जो अपने राजनीतिक आकाओं के इशारे पर काम कर रही है, और मेरे और मेरे गिरफ्तार अन्य साथियों के खिलाफ अपने मामले साबित करने की कोशिश कर रही है।

पीपुल्स यूनियन फॉर डेमोक्रेटिक राइट्स’ (पीयूडीआर) में हम लोग 40 वर्षों से भी अधिक समय से एकजुट और निडर होकर लोकतांत्रिक अधिकारों के लिए लड़ रहे हैं और इसके हिस्से के तौर पर मैंने ऐसे कई मामलों को कवर किया है। अब मैं खुद एक राजनीतिक लड़ाई का सामना करूंगा। नौलखा और चार अन्य नक्सल समर्थकों को 31 दिसंबर को पुणे में जनसभा आयोजित करने के मामले में पुणे पुलिस ने कई शहरों में छापे मारने के बाद गिरफ्तार किया है, जिसमें क्रांतिकारी कवि वरवर राव भी शामिल हैं। जनसभा के अगले दिन पुणे से 60 किलोमीटर दूर कोरेगांव-भीमा में हिंसा हुई थी।

आपको बता दें कि 28 अगस्त को पुणे पुलिस ने भीमा कोरेगांव हिंसा, नक्सलियों से संबंधों और गैर-कानूनी गतिविधियों के आरोपों में 5 लोगों को अरेस्ट किया है। इनमें वरवरा राव, सुधा भारद्वाज, गौतम नवलखा, वेरनोन गोन्जाल्विस और अरुण फरेरा शामिल हैं। इन मानवाधिकार कार्यकर्ताओं की तरफ से रोमिला थापर, प्रभात पटनायक, सतीश देशपांडे, माया दर्नाल और एक अन्य ने सुप्रीम कोर्ट ने अर्जी दाखिल की थी। इस याचिका को चीफ जस्टिस की अदालत में पेश किया है। याचिका में गिरफ्तारी को गैरकानूनी बताते हुए निष्पक्ष जांच की मांग की गई।

राहुल गांधी ने इस मसले पर बीजेपी सरकार पर अटैक करते हुए ट्वीट किया, भारत में सिर्फ एक ही एनजीओ के लिए जगह है और उसका नाम है आरएसएस। इसके अलावा अन्य सभी एनजीओ को बंद कर दीजिए। सभी ऐक्टिविस्ट्स को जेल में डाल दो और जो विरोध करे, उसे गोली मार दो। राहुल की ओर से सरकार पर ऐक्टिविस्ट्स की आवाज को दबाए जाने के आरोप लगाने पर सरकार की ओर से भी प्रतिक्रिया आई है।

300 ग्राम हेरोइन के साथ 3 गिरफ्तार

स्पेशल टास्क फोर्स (एसटीएफ) ने हेरोइन समेत तीन तस्करों को गिरफ्तार किया है। आरोपियों अवतार सिंह उर्फ राजू निवासी वार्ड नंबर 9 कुराली (जिला मोहाली), कुलवीर सिंह उर्फ बेअंती निवासी गांव हेडां (जिला संगरूर) और अमनदीप सिंह उर्फ टिंकू निवासी गांव पलहेड़ी (जिला मोहाली) से 300 ग्राम हेरोइन बरामद हुई है।

एसटीएफ के एसपी राजिंदर सिंह सोहल ने बताया कि टास्क फोर्स को सूचना मिली थी कि तीन लोग हरियाणा नंबर की होंडा अकोर्ड कार में दिल्ली से हेरोइन लेकर जीरकपुर साइड से होते हुए एयरपोर्ट रोड मोहाली के रास्ते से आ रहे हैं। सूचना के आधार पर सब-इंस्पेक्टर पवन कुमार ने एयरपोर्ट रोड पर नाका लगाकर उन्हें गिरफ्तार कर लिया।

पंचकूला में दुर्गा शक्ति एप का पोस्टर जारी किया गया।

           इस अवसर पर श्री सन्धू ने कहा कि मुख्यमन्त्री श्री मनोहर लाल द्वारा गत माह में महिलाओं को आपातकालीन स्थिति में तुरन्त सहायता उपलब्ध करवाने के उदेश्य से इस ऐप को लाॅच किया गया था। इस ऐप को महिलाये अपने स्मार्ट फोन में प्ले स्टोर में जाकर डाउनलोड कर सकती है। श्री सन्धू ने यह भी कहा कि सभी जिलों के नोडल अधिकारी इस ऐप को अपने अपने जिलों की महिलाओं तथा लडकियों के फोन में डाउनलोड करवाना सुनिश्चित करें। इस ऐप को लांच करने का मकसद तभी सही मायने  में पूरा होगा जब सभी महिलाओं तथा लडकियों के फोन में यह ऐप होगी। बहुत जल्द ही यह सुविधा एप्पल फोन में भी उपलब्ध होगी।

Police claim the speeches made at the Elgaar Parishad, a day ahead of the bicentennial celebration of the battle of Bhima Koregaon, were one of the triggers to the violence that was witnessed in and around Pune the next day.

In the second such operation in three months, Pune police carried out simultaneous searches at multiple locations across the country and arrested a few prominent activists in connection with its investigations into the alleged Maoist involvement in the organisation of Elgaar Parishad on December 31 last year.

Police claim the speeches made at the Elgaar Parishad, a day ahead of the bicentennial celebration of the battle of Bhima Koregaon, were one of the triggers for the violence that was witnessed in and around Pune the next day.

In an early morning swoop, teams of Pune police landed on the doorsteps of activist and journalist Gautam Navlakha in Delhi, writer and activist P Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, civil rights lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj in Faridabad, activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Ferreira in Mumbai, Stan Swamy in Ranchi and Anand Teltumbde in Goa and searched their premises.

Some of them had already been arrested by afternoon, and others were likely to be arrested by the end of the day. Joint Police commissioner with Pune city police Shivaji Bhodke said Bhardwaj and Varavara Rao had been arrested. “More arrests are likely,” he said. The arrested persons are likely to be produced in a city court on Wednesday.

In Goa, writer and civil rights activist Anand Teltumbde, who teaches at the Goa Institute of Management, was the target of Pune police searches. Anand was not at home when the police came looking for him and he was informed about the raid by his institute’s director.

“The house in Goa was locked but they (Pune police team) opened it and carried out a search. I have not been arrested thus far,” Anand told The Indian Express.

Today’s searches come about three months after a similar operation on June 6, in which the Pune police had arrested five “urban Maoist operatives” from Delhi, Nagpur and Mumbai. Those arrested at that time included Nagpur University professor Shoma Sen and Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson of the Committee of Release of Political Prisoners.

Others to be arrested in June were Sudhir Dhawale, leader of Mumbai-based Republican Panthers Jati Antachi Chalwal, Nagpur lawyer Surendra Gadling of Indian Association of People’s Lawyers, and Mahesh Raut who had in the past been Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow.

Police claim that today’s searches at the six places were a result of the interrogation of these arrested people, who are currently lodged at Yervada central prison in Pune in magisterial custody. They have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

While producing them in court a day after their arrests in June, police had claimed to have seized material that pointed to a plan to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a”Rajiv Gandhi” -like manner”.

The Elgaar Parishad was organised to commemorate the 200thanniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon which happened on January 1 in 1818, in which a British army comprising of a large number of Dalit soldiers is said to have defeated the Peshwas. Every year on January 1, thousands of Dalits assemble in Pune and march to the village of Koregaon Bhima which has a war memorial (Jaystambh) in memory of those who died in that battle.

Among those who spoke at Elgaar Parishad were Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and JNU student Umar Khalid. Police claim their investigations had shown that banned Maoist groups were involved in financing and organising the Elgaar Parishad event.
