The country’s largest lender SBI today said its services may be impacted on May 30-31 if the proposed strike by various bankemployees’ unions take place.
The bank unions have been pressing for various demands, including wage revision in the wake of the proposal for a 2 per cent hike in salary.

State Bank of India said the Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has communicated to the bank that the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBA) has served a notice to go on a nationwide bank strike on May 30-31, 2018.

UFBU is an umbrella body of various bank unions like AIBEA, AIBOC, NCBE, AIBOA, BEFI, INBEF, INBOC, NOBW and NOBO.

“All India State Bank Officers’ Federation and All India State Bank of India Staff Federation are members of UFBU. Thus, it is likely that our bank will also be impacted to some extent by the said strike calls,” SBI said in a regulatory filing.

According to an UFBU circular, earlier on May 16, it gave a memorandum to IBA followed by demonstrations. It also gave memorandum to the finance ministry and labour ministry.

RaGa’s Mansarovar in Italy: Sambit

The BJP took a swipe at Karnataka Chief Minister H D Kumaraswamy today, saying he was the “chief manager (CM)” of the Congress’s ATM in the state and that he was lying prostrate at the feet of the Gandhi family.

The saffron party’s attack on the JD(S) leader came after the latter’s comments in Bengaluru yesterday that he was at the mercy of the Congress and not the people of Karnataka as his government had not received the full mandate, which his party had sought in the recently held Assembly election in the state.

“Nothing can be sadder than this. This is absolutely demeaning to the democratic fabric of the country and akin to an abuse of India’s democracy,” BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra told reporters here.

He described the current situation as a fallout of the Congress-JD(S) alliance’s mockery of the popular mandate in the southern state for petty political interests.

The BJP had emerged as the single-largest party in the Karnataka Assembly election by bagging 104 of the 222 seats that went to the polls, but fell short of a majority, allowing the Congress and the JD(S) to join hands and form government in the state.

Patra alleged that for the Congress, Karnataka was its ATM and it had found a chief manager in Kumaraswamy, while the government in the southern state would be run from Janpath — a reference to the residential address of former Congress chief Sonia Gandhi.

“The Congress has found a new manager for its ATM in Karnataka. We can say this after his (Kumaraswamy’s) statement. People are asking who is their chief minister,” the BJP spokesperson said.

Referring to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s words, he said for the BJP, the country was family, while for the Congress, the “first family” of the party was the country.

“Kumaraswamy is lying prostrate at the feet of a family,” Patra said.

He added that former prime minister Manmohan Singh used to blame the compulsions of coalition politics in the face of allegations of corruption in his government and said there was a feeling of deja vu in Karnataka.

Patra also claimed that various opposition parties were not accepting Congress president Rahul Gandhi as the leader of an anti-BJP coalition.

To a question, the BJP leader claimed that the saffron party would form the next government in Odisha, where Assembly polls will be held simultaneously with the Lok Sabha election in 2019.

“Modi” wave continues

The ‘Modi wave’ continues to remain a powerful force and the NDA will form government again 2019, but the win may not be as thumping as it was in the 2014 General Elections, predicted ABP-CSDS survey. The survey predicts that the BJP and allies could bag 274 seats while Congress-led UPA may secure 164 seats. The others are expected to win 105 seats. The survey, however, comes with a disclaimer that “if the polls were held today” which means that it takes into consideration the performance of the BJP-led government in the last four years.

There are 543 seats in the Lok Sabha and majority mark needed to form the government is 272 seats. In 2014 General Elections, BJP alone had won 282 seats and was able to form an absolute majority government. The National Democratic Alliance (NDA) had in 2014 won with an overwhelming majority, taking 336 seats. If the findings of the ABP-CSDS translates into reality, then the picture could be slightly different in 2019. BJP may not able to form the government on its own and would have to rely on allies to hold on to power.

So all in all, BJP’s dominance on Indian politics would continue, but the picture won’t be as pleasing for them as it was after the 2014 Lok Sabha elections. It is one thing for a party to have the majority numbers on its own, but totally different when it falls short and allies get a chance to call the shots. In the latter case, the BJP will have to convince alliance partners before going ahead with any decision, so the saffron party may rule but not with an ‘iron fist’. State-wise, the BJP will take a beating in Uttar Pradesh, which sends most MPs to the Lok Sabha, as the regional alliance of SP and BSP may get 53% vote share while the NDA may get 35 %. UP has 80 Lok Sabha seats out of which the BJP had won 71 seats in 2014. This was a decisive factor which propelled BJP to power. BJP’s vote share in UP in 2014

In Gujarat, BJP may get 54 percent votes, while the UPA is likely to get 42 percent votes. The others may get 4 percent. According to the survey, BJP’s vote share will decrease by 4 percent and the Congress is likely to gain 9 percent compared to 2014 general elections. Congress had secured 33 percent in 2014.

[Mood of the Nation Survey updates: NDA to get 274, UPA may secure 164 seats]

Region-wise, out of the 114 seats in central and western India, the BJP may bag 70 to 78 seats. This is down from the 108 seats it had bagged in 2014. The UPA which had won 10 seats in 2014 would get 41 to 47 if elections were to be held now.

Region wise vote shares:

North India: NDA – 39%; UPA – 21%; Others – 40%

Eastern India: NDA – 43%; UPA – 25%; Others – 32%

Central-Western India: NDA- 48%; UPA – 43 %; others – 9%

Southern India: NDA – 18%; UPA – 38%; others – 44%

Pan India vote shares prediction: NDA – 37%; UPA – 31%; others – 32%

In 2014, the BJP won only 31.0% votes, which is the lowest share for a party to form a majority government in India since independence, while NDA’s combined vote share was 38.5%. BJP and its allies won the right to form the largest majority government since the 1984 general election, and it was the first time since that election that a party has won enough seats to govern without the support of other parties. The United Progressive Alliance, led by the Indian National Congress, won 59 seats, 44 of which were won by the Congress, that won 19.3% of all votes.

Youth roughed up

A man was allegedly assaulted by four persons in a moving train in West Bengal after he failed to reply to their queries on Prime Minister Narendra Modi and the national anthem, police said on Friday. The victim, a migrant labourer, was on his way to Kaliachak in Malda district from Howrah on May 14, when the four persons got into the train and sat next to his seat after he had briefly deboarded at a station, a police officer said.

Upon his arrival, they suddenly started asking him questions about Prime Minister Narendra Modi, the national anthem and Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee, he said, adding that the man was roughed up when he could not reply to the queries. The group later got down at Bandel station.

A local NGO – Bangla Sankriti Mancha – lodged an FIR against the accused on Thursday, based on videos taken by co-passengers, Kaliachak Police Station Inspector-in-Charge Suman Chatterjee said. An investigation into the matter is underway, Chatterjee said.
