Webinar on Diaspora Engagement in Sustainable Development

            Panjab University Alumni Association in collaboration with Department of Sociology organized an International webinar on Diaspora Engagement in Sustainable Development.

            The key speakers Mr Suthan Kethees,  Management, consultant at Q_PERIOR AG, Deutschland, Germany, Ms Hamsha Padmanathan, Wild life biologist at Government of North West territories, Canada and Dr Prabhu Nadaraj, Faculty of Medicine, University of Jaffna, Sri Lanka, all co-founders of Comdu.it, a global network of diaspora volunteers committed to use diaspora technical skills and knowledge for sustainable development, emphasized on the need to empower local communities without creating dependency for community development based on mutual trust and knowledge economics. They highlighted the practical approach which they had followed in green innovation through organic farming, waste management and generation of renewable energy in different regions of Sri Lanka.  They also mentioned about food innovation i.e. food produced through ecologically sound and sustainable methods which are based on local food system. They focused on having capacity building programmes which follow the principles of health, ecology ,fairness and care for growth of environmental sustainability across nations.

Prof. V R Sinha, Dean University Instructions,  gave the presidential remarks in which he clearly defined through wonderful illustrations the change in the attitude of people regarding safeguarding the environment during the tough pandemic times.

Earlier, Prof. Anupama Sharma, Dean, Alumni Association, PU in her welcome address highlighted the role of diaspora in bringing a positive change for the environment  and how diaspora involvement can produce effective results in creating awareness regarding conserving and preserving the environment.

Prof Rani Mehta, Chairperson, Department of Sociology, earlier introduced the theme of the webinar by focusing on the significance of sustainable development especially for developing nations which are worst affected due to unlimited economic growth and lack of sufficient knowledge about clean technology to take care of their environmental hazards such as global warming, desertification, deforestation, species extinction etc. Thus, sustainable development  efforts are essential and need to be dynamic as well as should involve a basic change in the way we think, produce, consume and the way in which we behave towards each other.

The Vote of Thanks was given by Professor Anupama Sharma and the webinar was well attended by scholars from the region and outside it. 

एचएसए का संघर्ष लाया रंग : महिला महाविद्यालय में शुरू होगा कंप्यूटर साइंस विषय

महिला महाविद्यालय में कम्प्यूटर साइंस विषय नहीं होने के कारण छात्राओं को परेशानियों का सामना करना पड़ रहा था। छात्राओं ने एचएसए के बैनर तले महाविद्यालय के प्राचार्य व सीएम को भी पत्र के माध्यम से अवगत करवाया था। एचएसए का संघर्ष रंग लाया और विद्यार्थियों की डिमांड पर अब महाविद्यालय में इसी सत्र से कंप्यूटर साइंस में दाखिले किए जाएंगे। एचएसए द्वारा खासकर छात्राओं के लिए किए गए संघर्ष पर छात्राओं ने एसोसिएशन पदाधिकारियों का आभार जताया। नैशनल कॉलेज के पूर्व प्रधान मोहित मेहता, वर्तमान प्रधान नितिन चौहान, सगंठन की उप प्रधान नैंसी गर्ग, मुख्य अध्यक्ष चंदन सोनी, करण सीवन, हर्षदीप सिंह, शैफाली व सिमरन ने बताया कि बारहवीं कक्षा के बाद कंप्यूटर साइंस विषय लेने की इच्छुक छात्राएं महिला महाविद्यालय में कंप्यूटर साइंस विषय न होने से परेशान थी। छात्राएं समस्या को लेकर नैशनल कॉलेज के छात्र संगठन हिन्दुस्तान स्टूडेंट्स पास पहुंची और समस्या से अवगत करवाया। उन्होंने बताया कि वह महिला महाविद्यालय में दाखिला लेना चाहती हैं, परन्तु वहां कम्प्यूटर साइंस न होने के कारण वे दाखिला नहीं ले पांएगी, जिससे उनका साल भी बर्बाद हो जाएगा। छात्राओं की समस्या को देखते हुए उन्होंने सर्वप्रथम महिला महाविद्यालय के प्राचार्य डा. रामकुमार जांगड़ा को ज्ञापन सौंपा था व उन्हीं दिनों मुख्यमंत्री को भी इस विषय पर ज्ञापन प्रेषित किया था। छात्राओं की समस्या को गंभीरता से लेते हुए सरकार ने उनकी मांग को पूरा किया, जिसपर छात्राओं में खुशी का माहौल है। इसी वर्ष से कॉलेज में कंप्यूटर साइंस में दाखिले किए जाएंगे। छात्राओं ने एचएसए के पदाधिकारियों का उनकी समस्या का समाधान करवाने पर आभार व्यक्त किया।

Workshop on “Mental Health and Well being”

The Centre for Human Rights and Duties in collaboration with National Cadet Corps of Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a one day workshop for NCC Cadets on the topic of  “Mental Health and Well Being” at University Institute of Emerging Areas  in Social Sciences, (UIEASS)Panjab University, Chandigarh on 11 August, 2021.

Dr. Namita Gupta, Chairperson, Centre for Human Rights and Duties introduced the resource person. She stated that everyone has faced one or other kind of mental health problems in the Corona pandemic. People have faced difficulties in coping with mental health problems. Therefore it is the need of the hour to inform people what they should do in such situations and how they can maintain their well being.

Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director, UGC-Human Resource Development Centre, Panjab University in her presentation explained that mental health is a state of well-being in which an individual realizes his or her own abilities, can cope with the normal stresses of life, can work productively and is able to make a contribution to his or her community. To become healthy, every person needs to think clearly and originally, feel active and behave properly in society. She also defined the concept of success. Success is basically having self-satisfaction and to achieve one’s Goals. She stated that parameters of success differ with individuals and it changes with times as persons keep evolving. Everyone needs to think before sleeping whether what they are doing is good for them or not.

She further added that human Beings should live a slow, simple and uncomplicated life. Nowadays, people don’t think actively. They only do what society teaches them. Hence, there is a need to think actively, originally and positively and to understand what is right or wrong. She also said that our body and mind is our life partner so we have to take care of our body and health, and should exercise daily. We should not adopt bad habits, and don’t abuse our body through consuming substance abuse. We should be aware of our abilities, weaknesses and emotions. We should have a balanced life so that we cannot regret our decisions later. Everyone should work on their skills, attitude and competency besides having a professionalized degree. Everyone needs to learn how to speak up or express their thoughts, ideas and emotions on public platforms.

Dr. Kuldeep Singh, Coordinator NCC, PU stated that more such programmes will be organized in the future.

Zoology, PU Organises Distinguished Lectures

The Department of Zoology, Panjab University Chandigarh hosted today, virtual distinguished lectures under the aegis of Indian Sciences Congress Association and Zoological Society of India in collaboration with Chandigarh forum for Sciences and Technology Communication.

The session was chaired by Prof. R. C. Sobti former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh, and Babasaheb Bhim Rao Ambedkar Central University, Lucknow. Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Chairperson of, Department of Zoology welcomed the distinguished guests and eminent speakers.

The first distinguished lecture entitled “Small stories big impact DNA in life science research” was delivered by Prof. Gulab Khedkar Director, Paul Hebert Centre for DNA Barcoding and Biodiversity Studies, Dr. Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University, Aurangabad India. He discussed DNA barcoding and International Barcode of Life (iBOL) initiatives. He elaborated upon the applications of DNA barcoding in taxonomic studies on fishes, food forensic and wildlife monitoring, exploration and impact of exotic species. Further, he also highlighted the importance of beta-actin markers in microsatellite genotyping and metagenomic profile of uterine samples to improve the in-vitro fertilization success ratio.

The second lecture entitled “Protein-based Biomarkers methods of discovery and clinical application” was delivered by Dr. Sudarshan Kumar, Sr. ScientistAnimal Biotechnology Center, ICAR-NDRI Karnal. He discussed bovine proteomics using mass spectrometry. He emphasized the working and methodologies of various techniques in isolating protein and the importance of proteomic research. He provided an insight into the various high throughput data analyses pipelines and various protein sequences databases. He also discussed the apoptosis pathways in different organs and different biomarkers for pregnancy discoveries using protein content in cow urine.

The session ended with vote of thanks form Dr. Archana Chauhan, coordinator of the event.

The session was attended by more than 100 participants.

E-Inauguration Ceremony Held by UBS, PU for New Batch

University Business School(UBS), Panjab University e-inaugurated its four MBA programs (the batch of 2021-2023) – Master of Business Administration (MBA), Master of Business Administration (International Business), Master of Business Administration (Human Resource) and Master of Business Administration (Entrepreneurship) today.

Senior alumni and industry stalwarts were part of the program. The chief guest for the Program Mr. Subhash Kumar, Chairman & Managing Director Oil and Natural Gas Corporation Limited (UBS Batch 1983), graced the Inauguration Ceremony with his presence and advised the students to know their immense potential. He further added that life is like different branches of a tree and any branch can be used to reach to the top. He also mentioned the importance of being redundant and making available a replacement as soon as you leave a position so that there is no remorse afterwards.

This was followed by the address by Guest of  Honor, Mr. Dinesh Moudgil, Partner, Ernst & Young (UBS Batch 1994) in which he talked about the rise of disruptive competitors under the COVID scenario and how it compelled them to become self-dependent. He advised the students that there will be many opportunities but they should be ready for the uncertainties. Be ready to learn and unlearn, don’t avoid the perils of volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous world, quicker students  accept this,  the better it will be. In order to support the student on how to survive in this quickly transforming era he suggested to develop their own perspective as knowledge is not enough.

Prof. Dinesh Kumar Gupta advised the students to become a perfect professional and sensitized that discipline is the prerequisite to success.  Prof. Meena Sharma while addressing the students stated that UBS provides opportunities and the world of possibilities for the students

Prof. Purva Kansal welcomed the students and gave inputs for students to condition themselves for next 2 yrs. Prof. Kansal advised the students to be a learning system in themselves and incorporate Peter Senges Principles to make best use of these 2 years at UBS.

 Prof. SK Chadha gave a brief introduction of UBS followed by Prof V.R Sinha, Dean of University Instructions, PU highlighting the heritage and milestones achieved by the University nationally and globally.

Celebrations of Amrut Mahotsav at PU

The office of Dean international Students, Department of Sociology, Department of Social Work and Department of History celebrated Amrut Mahotsav 75 years of India’s Independence by special lecture of Professor Rajendra Khimani , Vice Chancellor, Gujarat Vidyapith University, Ahmedabad, who spoke about the lifestyle during Pandemic.

Prof.  Khimani follows the path of Gandhiji and highlighted to the participants that they should eat homemade food with less quantity, do regular physical activity and follow naturopathy in order to fight the woes of the pandemic. He focused on simplicity and use of natural resources to combat pandemics. He also elaborated on policy of reduce ,reuse and recycle for the benefit of all . He also mentioned about the focus on Indian culture and its various languages to make education more viable and vibrant with maximum participation by all including those belonging to rural areas. These are also part of the NEP 2020 which gives encouragement to teaching in local languages, dignity of labour etc. for which he has himself made efforts in his university.

Prof. Anju Suri, Dean International Students, highlighted various achievements of India over the years be it Olympics, mission to Mars, nuclear power plants etc.

 Earlier, Prof. Rani Mehta, Chairperson, Sociology Department, introduced the speaker by mentioning about the innovative techniques of recycling of drainage water, terrace farming, roof water harvesting and other energy saving programmes which were started by him in Gujarat Vidyapith.  

The vote of thanks was given by Prof. Anju Suri and it was well attended by participants from the region.

PU Honors the Covid 19 Frontline Workers

The Centre for Social Work and NSS, Panjab University, Chandigarh honored 16 Swachhta Karyakartas under the SWACHHTA PAKHWADA-2021 (1-15 August, 2021). 

Prof S K Tomar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW) felicitated all of them  for their invaluable contribution through out the Covid-19 pandemic and still continuing. He appreciated all of them for their commitment and dedication shown towards the work they do. 


Prof Meena Sharma, DSW(W), Prof Ashwani Koul, NSS Coordinator and Prof Ashok Kumar, Associate DSW, Sh. Anil Kumar, Executive Engineer, Horticulture, PU appreciated their work. Dr Shipra Gupta, Warden, Girls hostel no.9 and Dr Vivek, NSS Programme Officer were also present. 

Dr.Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson, Centre for Social Work coordinated the whole ceremony and thanked all the dignitaries and recipients. 

Tree Plantation cum Cleanliness Drive at PU

Chandigarh August 4, 2021

To promote the initiative of Swachhta Bharat Pakhwada under Swachh Bharat Mission

among students and Panjab University campus residents, Department of NSS in collaboration with ‘Boys Hostel No. 2 and Horticulture Division, PU carried out a Tree Plantation cum cleanliness drive today at University Meadows near Gurudwara in PU.

The drive was launched by Dr. Sucha Singh, NSS Programme Officer. The organizing committee included the NSS Programme Officers Dr. Navneet Kaur, Dr. Vivek  Kapoor, Dr. Vivek Kumar, Dr. Anuj Kumar  and Dr. Naveen Kumar. The staff of boys hostel no. 2, horticulture and NSS volunteers also enthusiastically participated in the drive.

 In response to this initiative, both students and staff planted 20 trees and collected the plastic waste and disposed off the same in the proper manner. NSS team motivated the participants to protect the environment from the plastic waste and make these kinds of cleanliness activities a routine to keep their surroundings clean and green.
