Panjab University Hosts Launch Event for Royal Society of Chemistry’s Book on Chemometric Methods in Forensic Science

Panjab University’s Honourable Vice Chancellor Prof. Renu Vig, presided over the unveiling of the book “Chemometric Methods in Forensic Science,” edited by Dr. Vishal Sharma from the Institute of Forensic Science & Criminology. Published by the Royal Society of Chemistry (UK) and co-edited by Prof. Simon Lewis and Dr. Georgina Sauzier from Curtin University, Perth (Australia), the release ceremony saw the presence of key figures like Prof Harsh Nayyar (Director RDC), Prof. Navdeep Goyal (Dean Faculty of Science), and Prof. Rajat Sandhir (Professor Biochemistry & Former Coordinator Forensic Science Department). Foreworded by Max M. Houck, Ph.D., FRSC, from Florida International University, USA, the book is celebrated as a vital milestone supporting scientific understanding and criminal justice system across the globe.

Dr. Vishal Sharma expressed that after more than three years of meticulous effort, the book presents chemometric methods specifically designed for professionals in forensic science. Addressing a literature gap, it outlines the application of these methods in forensic casework, their limitations, and emerging trends. The book is structured into sections covering the background, types, basic understanding of Chemometric methods and its applications in various forensic disciplines like in Trace evidence analysis, Environmental Forensics,Illicit Drugs and Pharmaceuticals Analysis, Fire and Explosions Investigation, Food Forensics, Cosmetics and Personal Hygiene Products, Questioned Document Examination, and Biological Materials. Offering detailed discussions on their advantages, limitations, and efficiency, it serves as a valuable resource for Forensic Science students.

The rising popularity of chemometrics in forensic applications, particularly in multivariate statistical tools, is highlighted. With relevance across various forensic disciplines involving chemical analysis, the book provides essential knowledge for students, researchers, practitioners, and other stakeholders. The aim is not only to promote the application of chemometrics in forensic casework but also to encourage further research and critical discussions. The book is envisioned to contribute significantly to advancing forensic science by enhancing the validity and integrity of forensic evidence, thus strengthening the criminal justice system.

Global Alumni meet 2023 of the Panjab University

Subject: Global Alumni meet 2023 of the Panjab University

I. “NO VEHICLE ROAD”  The VVIP route will be from Gate No- 1 to Law Auditorium via road of Art block 1,2,3 Gandhi Bhawan.

 (a) This route will not be allowed for public from 11:30 am to 05:00 Pm or till the VVIP departure on 23 December 2023.

(b) No Vehicle will be allowed to be parked on this route road on 22 & 23 Dec 2023.

II. Please park your vehicles in respective / designated parking only.

III. All the resident / visitors of Panjab University are not to park their vehicles on the road side in the PU campus on 22&23 dec 2023. If any vehicle is found parked in the unauthorized area, it will be towed-away by the traffic police of Chandigarh.

IV. Gate timing for General Public on 23 Dec 2023.

a). Gate No- 1 will remain open for entry and exit from 06:00 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. and after 05:00 Pm. No Vehicles will be allowed from Gate No-1 from 11:30 am. To 05:00 Pm. 0n 23 dec 2023.

b). Gate No – 2 will remain open for entry and exit throughout for the (VIPs, Distinguish Alumni, Alumni Fellows, Guest Invitees, Faculty & Media persons).

c). Gate no – 3 will remain open for entry and exit from 06:00 a.m. to 10:00 pm for the   (VIPs, Distinguish Alumni, Alumni Fellows, Guest Invitees, Faculty & Media persons).

All the Panjab University residents, visitors in the PU campus are requested to follow the above mentioned instructions for the smooth conduct of the Alumni Meet – 2023. Inconvenience if any is regretted.

मेडिकल के क्षेत्र में एडमिशन लेने के इच्छुक स्टूडेंट्स को सहायता करेगा प्रदान

एमिटी यूनिवर्सिटी पंजाब ने गूगल डेवलपर्स ग्रुप चंडीगढ़ के सहयोग से डेवलपर्स फेस्ट, ’डेव फेस्ट’ का आयोजन किया, फेस्ट का उद्देश्य विभिन्न यूनिवर्सिटीज के इंजीनियरिंग विद्यार्थियों और प्रोफेसरों के आपसी सहयोग और लर्निंग को बढ़ावा देना था।
एमिटी यूनिवर्सिटी पंजाब परिसर में आयोजित इस कार्यक्रम में टेक इंडस्ट्री के प्रतिष्ठित प्रवक्ताओं ने अत्याधुनिक विषयों पर अपनी अंतर्दृष्टि साझा की, जिससे उपस्थितजनों को टेक्नोलाॅजी के लगातार विकसित हो रहे क्षेत्र में नेटवर्क बनाने, सीखने और बढ़ने में मदद मिली।
इस कार्यक्रम में विविध विषयों को शामिल करते हुए प्रभावशाली सत्र प्रस्तुत किए गए, जिनमें ’जेनरेटिव एआई स्टूडियो के साथ क्या संभव है’; हैंड्स-ऑनः डेटा इनटू एआई विद गूगल क्लाउड; क्विज़, वेब और एंड्रॉयड डेवलपमेंट पर वर्कशाॅप्स शामिल हैं। प्रतिभागियों को टेक्नोलॉजी के प्रमुख क्षेत्रों में ज्ञानवर्धक और व्यावहारिक अनुभव देने के लिए इन सत्रों को बहुत ही सावधानीपूर्वक आयोजित किया गया था।
टेक्नोलॉजी के प्रमुख क्षेत्रों में प्रतिष्ठित वक्ताओं में गूगल में डेवलपर एडवोकेट अबिराम सुकुमारन;जीसीपी में गूगल डेवलपर एक्सपर्ट इन जीसीपी; अनुभव सिंह; बीबेटर एचआर सॉल्यूशंस के सीईओ व फाउंडर अनुराधा चावला;जीडीई एंड्रॉइड और फायरबेस पंकज राय; गूगल डेवलपर एक्पर्ट इन एंड्रॉइड नितिन प्रकाश; गूगल डेवलपर एक्सपर्ट इन फ्लूटर देबास्मिता सरकार; निवि.एआई के को-फाउंडर गौरव मदान शामिल थे, जिन्होंने अपने अनुभव और ज्ञान से इस आयोजन की समग्र सफलता में योगदान दिया।
प्रतिभागियों को वर्कशाॅप्स सहित विभिन्न प्रकार के इंटरैक्टिव सत्रों में शामिल होने का अवसर मिला, जहां वे वेब और एंड्रॉइड डवलपमेंट में व्यावहारिक कौशल हासिल कर सकते थे। व्यावहारिक दृष्टिकोण का उद्देश्य उपस्थित लोगों को वास्तविक दुनिया के ज्ञान से सशक्त बनाना और क्षेत्र में उनकी क्षमताओं को बढ़ाना है।

Celebrations of Energy Conservation Day on 14th Dec 2023

The University Institute of Chemical Engineering and Technology (UICET) at Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated the Energy Conservation Day on 14-12-2023 in collaboration with the Institutional Innovation Counci l(IIC), The Catalysis Society of India (CSI) Chandigarh Chapter and Panjab University Alumni association (PUAA). The event featured an enlightening talk by Mr. Sharad Sharma Project Manager at PEDA and expert from the field of energy conservation.

The faculty members, research scholars of the Institute and University, members of IIC and students participated in the event. In his talk Mr, Sharad Sharma deliberated about the various projects undertaken by the Punjab Energy development agency (PEDA) in the last few years in Punjab and Chandigarh with schools, industries, and various institutions. PEDA got 3rd prize for Energy conservation this year and was ranked first in the year 2021. He also discussed schemes and measures to be adopted by institutes, students and public for energy conservation. The faculty and students interacted with him and asked their queries related to energy conservation, EV transformation, rural sector growth, green hydrogen production and energy conservation and energy auditing.

The Honorary Director Energy Research Centre and Chairperson Dr. SSB UICET honoured the expert with a memento and thanked him for his valuable and informative discourse on the topic and measures adopted by PEDA for energy conservation.

‘Campus to Corporate’ Session by HCL Technologies Limited

The Centre for Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (CSDE) at Panjab University, Chandigarh, organised a one-day session on ‘Campus to Corporate’ by HCL Technologies Limited in collaboration with University Business School (UBS) for their MBA. The Professional Skills Head at HCLTech, Dr. Manjit Legha, highlighted the exciting opportunities and novel challenges students face while transitioning from the comfortable campus life to the fast-paced corporate life. She engaged the students by asking them what they think is appropriate corporate behaviour and what they foresee as the challenges. Students were apprised of the need for upskilling by mastering language and behavioural skills. The 6-H Corporate World Model was discussed, emphasising honesty, humility, health, human values, hard work, and hunger to perform. Dr. Legha encouraged the students to prepare a Failure Résumé, which lists the times when things have not gone according to plan. Most people do not attempt new things because of the fear of failure. The students appreciated her skill in knitting a story around numbers, stimulating anecdotes and two-way engagement. They were advised to build rather than battle once they moved from campus to corporate. The session concluded with an interactive Q&A round.

Winners and Participants of Photography Competition Honored

Today, Prof. Renu Vig, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh honored the winners and participants of Photography Competition with cash prizes and certificates, organized by Department of Public Relations, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Kamalpreet Singh, Raja Vikrant Sharma, Gurmehak Singh got Ist, 2nd and 3rd prize respectively in the theme ‘Shadows of PU Campus’. Whereas, Arun Bansal, Ravkaran Singh and Vishnu Verma got Ist, 2nd and 3rd prize in the theme ‘PU Structure’.

Prof. Renu Vig while congratulating the winners/participants, appreciated the talent and creativity of the photographers. She also appreciated the efforts taken by the Department of Public Relations and advised to make it an yearly practice.

Earlier, Prof. Namita Gupta, Director, Public Relations shared that the competition received a tremendous response and the department received around 170 photographs in both the categories.

Photography competition conducted in the month of November 2023 by the Department of Public Relations, Panjab University (PU), Chandigarh was adjudged today by jury of four members namely Prof. Bhupinder Brar, Former Dean of University Instructions, PU, Prof. Y.P. Verma, Registrar, PU, Ms. Renuka B. Salwan, Former Director, Public Relations, PU and Dr. Jaspal Kamana, Government College of Girls, Chandigarh.

The contest was on two different themes i.e. Shadows of PU Campus and PU Structure. The DPR office received more than 170 photographs of both the themes.

All the judges deeply appreciated the perspective, mood, lighting, clean composition used by the photographers while clicking their photographs and also appreciated the step taken by Department of Public Relations and suggested that this should be made a regular practice every year.

पीयू के स्पोर्ट्स ग्राउंड में खिलाडियो को पीने के पानी की समस्या को लेकर पीयूसीएससी के महासचिव दीपक गोयत ने आवाज उठाई है। महासचिव दीपक गोयत ने कहा कि स्पोर्ट्स ग्राउंड में पीयू प्रशासन से वाटर कूलर और प्यूरीफायर की मांग है। गुरूवार को इस मांग को लेकर डीएसडब्लू जितेन्द्र ग्रोवर को मांग पत्र सौपकर स्पोर्ट्स ग्राउंड में वाटर कूलर और प्यूरीफायर लगवाने की मांग की। गोयत ने कहा कि शारीरिक शिक्षा विभाग के छात्रों द्वारा उठाई गई यह महत्वपूर्ण मांग है। स्पोर्ट्स ग्राउंड में खिलाडियों को पीने के पानी के लिए इधर-उधर भटकना पड़ रहा है। इनसो हमेशा पीयू में छात्रों व खिलाडियो की समस्या के लिए आवाज उठाती रही है। इनसो ने अपने वादे के अनुसार पिछले दिनों लड़कियों के हॉस्टल में वाशिंग मशीन भी लगवाई थी। वही डेंटल विभाग में भी एसी लगवाए थे। दीपक गोयत ने कहा कि उन्हे चुनाव के समय छात्रों की भलाई और जरूरतों को प्राथमिकता देने का संकल्प लिया था। छात्रों के समग्र विकास और कल्याण का समर्थन करते है।

Panjab University to have Research and Academic Collaboration with Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic

A five member delegation from Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic visited Panjab University, Chandigarh, India, to discuss potential collaborations and partnerships in various fields of academics & research and student exchange programmes.

The delegation from Mendel University in Brno, Czech Republic  doc. Ing. Svatopluk Kapounek, Ph.D. (Dean Faculty of Business and management) Ing. Marcel Sevela, Ph.D. (Vice-Dean of Faculty of  business and management) doc. Ing. Oldrich Trenz, Ph.D. (Associate Professor) Ing. Pawan Kumar Mishra, Ph.D. (Assistant Professor and South Asia Coordinator)
Bc. Elika Fojtíkova (International relations) were warmly welcomed by Prof. Renu Vig, the Vice-Chancellor of Panjab University, along with Prof. Rumina Sethi, DUI, Prof. Harsh Nayyar, Director, Research & Development Cell, Prof. Kewal Krishan, Dean International Students and other senior faculty members i.e. Prof Monika Aggarwal and Prof. Suveera Gill. Dr. Vishal Sharma introduced the team to the university for International Collaboration. The visit aimed to explore opportunities for mutually beneficial collaborations between the two prestigious universities.

Both sides emphasized the importance of fostering strong academic and research collaborations to address global challenges and promote innovation and cultural exchange amongst students and faculty.

Prof. Renu Vig expressed optimism about the prospects of mutual collaborations in the field of Business Management, Artificial Intelligence, stating, “This visit marks a significant step towards strengthening ties between our universities and fostering collaborative efforts in cutting-edge research and innovation.

The visit concluded with a commitment to further explore the potential for collaborative initiatives and partnerships.  The visit of the delegation to Panjab University was a significant step towards establishing meaningful collaborations and partnerships and it is expected to pave the way for increased academic and research cooperation between the two universities in the future.

Prof. Kapounek showed keen interest in establishing collaboration with Panjab University in terms of academic and research exchange programmes.  The delegates visited the campus and appreciated its architectural structure.
