             A Faculty Development Programme from 2-8 March, 2022 on “The Marginalized: Continuities and Changes,” organised by Prof. Sheena Pall, Coordinator, Dr B.R. Ambedkar Centre and Dr. Priyatosh Sharma, Chairperson, Department of History, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Human Resource Development Centre, started today with lectures by eminent scholars.  The Chief Speaker of the inaugural session, Prof. Devinder Singh, stated that the marginalised should be uplifted in all spheres of life.  Prof. Reicha Tanwar, Former Director, Women Studies Research Centre, Kurukshetra University underscored the need to end the marginalisation of women in higher educational institutions.  She stated that interdisciplinary research, gender main streaming and affirmative action was needed to bring about gender equality.

MAHASHIVRATRI CELEBRATED AT GH-6

 Mahashivratri is celebrated at Girls Hostel No. 6, Mother Teresa Hall, P.U., Chd.. The warden, Dr. Manisha Sharma, staff and residents of the hostel worshipped Lord Shiva on this occasion. Prof. Jagtar Singh, DSW, Prof. Meena Sharma, DSW(W), Prof. Ashok Kumar, Associate DSW and wardens of other hostels visited the temple of GH-6 for pooja. Ex-DUI, Prof. S.K. Tomar alongwith his wife also attended this occasion. The entire atmosphere was filled with positivity. Residents were very excited and enjoyed the celebrations. Milk and fruits were distributed among the worshippers.

The Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh in association with the Punjab State Council of Science and Technology inaugurated the “Faculty development training program” in “Industrial Microbiology and Fermentation Technology” under “DBT-GOI skill vigyan program” today which will be held from 2nd March to 26th March, 2022.

The inauguration function  started with a welcome address by Dr. Deepak K. Rahi, Chairman, Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, who gave an overview of the Department and briefly discussed how industrial fermentation technology is a vibrant and fast growing area of biotechnology, absorbing an ever increasing processes and products. Dr. Dapinder Bakshi, Joint Director, PSCST who discussed about the “Skill vigyan program” of DBT and PSCST.

Chief Guest of the program Dr. Jatinder Kaur Arora, Executive director, PSCST, emphasized that we should commercialize the technologies developed, she also discussed about the AVSAR programs, different research fellowships and the importance of connecting theoretical knowledge of the students to the practical knowledge.

Dr. Manu Sharma, Director, CIIPP and TEC, PU, Chandigarh was the Guest of Honour who gave a brief note on the use of green technologies and how the microbes can help in achieving this goal.

The key note speaker of the program, Dr. Prince Sharma, Former Dean Science, Punjab University, Chandigarh and Professor, Department of Microbiology delivered a talk on “Opportunities for green, sustainable technologies and start-ups.” Prof. Sharma started with summarizing the history of industrial enzymes, their use, economics and major companies involved in the enzyme production. He also discussed about the studies on enzymes being carried out in his lab, technologies transferred to the industry, various start-ups, and how these enzymes can act as an alternate to chemical derivatives for various processes.

Prof. S.K. Soni, Professor, Department of Microbiology and the coordinator of the program briefed the participants about the theme and duration of the program. He also discussed about the importance of microorganisms and their exploitation for the formation of value added products such as antibiotics, probiotics and clean fuel.

The program ended with a vote of thanks which was delivered by Dr. Naveen Gupta, Senior faculty, Department of Microbiology.

शिक्षा में करोड़ों की घूस, जातिवाद का दंश; नवीन के पिता ने बताया आखिर क्यों बेटे को पढ़ने यूक्रेन भेजा

प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी ने ज्ञानगौड़ा को फोन करके अपना शोक जताया। ज्ञानगौड़ा ने कहा कि मोदी ने उन्हें उनके बेटे का शव दो या तीन दिनों के भीतर स्वदेश लाने का आश्वासन दिया है। उन्होंने पत्रकारों से कहा कि उनके बेटे को 10वीं में 96 प्रतिशत और 12वीं में 97 प्रतिशत अंक प्राप्त हुए थे और उसने डॉक्टर बनने का सपना 10वीं कक्षा में देखा था। उन्होंने कहा, ‘शिक्षा प्रणाली और जातिवाद के कारण उसे सीट नहीं मिल सकी, जबकि वह मेधावी छात्र था। यहां एक मेडिकल सीट हासिल करने के लिए एक करोड़ से दो करोड़ रुपये तक की घूस देनी पड़ती है।

युद्धग्रस्त यूक्रेन में मारे गये भारतीय छात्र नवीन के पिता ने मंगलवार को दावा किया कि महंगी मेडिकल शिक्षा और जातिवाद कुछ ऐसे कारक हैं जिनकी वजह से भारतीय विद्यार्थी डॉक्टर बनने का ख्वाब पूरा करने के लिए यूक्रेन जैसे देशों का रुख करते हैं। शोक संतप्त शेखरप्पा ज्ञानगौड़ा ने कहा कि निजी नियंत्रण वाले कॉलेजों में भी मेडिकल की एक सीट पाने के लिए करोड़ों रुपये खर्च करने पड़ते हैं और यही वजह है कि मेडिकल पेशा बहुत ही कठिन विकल्प है।’

नवीन के पिता शेखरप्पा ने कहा, “हमारे कुछ सपने थे जो अब बिखर गए हैं। मेरा बेटा जिसने प्री यूनिवर्सिटी कोर्ट में 97% मार्क्स पाए थे, एक टैलेंटेड बच्चा था जिसे सिर्फ यहाँ के सिस्टम की वजह से बाहर पढ़ने जाना पड़ा, जिसमें प्राइवेट एड्यूकेशन इंस्टिट्यूट आपकी पहुँच से बाहर होते हैं। मैंने पता किया था मुझे किसी भी मेडिकल कॉलेज में उसका एडमिशन करवाने के लिए 85 से 1 करोड़ देने थे। तब मैंने सोचा कि मैं अपने बेटे को यूक्रेन भेजूँगा। लेकिन वो तो मुझे और ज्यादा महंगा पड़ गया।”

नवीन के पिता ने मीडिया के माध्यम से सरकार से अपील की कि वो लोग इस मामले में देखें। वह कहते हैं, “डोनेशन आदि बहुत बेकार चीजें हैं। इसी के चलते इंटेलीजेंट बच्चे पढ़ने के लिए विदेश जाते हैं। यहाँ जगह पाने के लिए करोड़ों माँगे जाते हैं। ऐसे में विदेश में वही शिक्षा बल्कि अच्छी शिक्षा वो भी बढ़िया उपकरणों के साथ मिलती है। यहाँ भारत में सिर्फ जाति के आधार पर मिलती हैं सीटें। मेरे बेटे के 97 फीसद पीयूसी में आए थे।”

उन्होंने कहा, देश के शिक्षा तंत्र और जातिवाद के चलते इंटेलिजेंट बच्चें सीट नहीं पाते। वह कहते हैं, “मैं हमारे राजनैतिक तंत्र, शिक्षा तंत्र और जातिवाद के कारण उदास हूँ। सब कुछ निजी संस्थानों के हाथ में है।” उन्होंने अपना दर्द साझा करते हुए कहा कि उन्होंने अपने दोस्तों और रिश्तेदारों से पैसे लेकर नवीन को एबीबीएस पढ़ने यूक्रेन भेजा था। वहाँ वह अपने दोस्तों के साथ अपार्टमेंट में रहता था। जब से जंग शुरू हुई थी वह घर पर कम से कम 5-6 बार कॉल करता था और फ्लैट के नीचे बने बंकर में जाकर रहने लगा था।

नवीन के सीनियर अमित बताते हैं कि उन्होंने बंकर से मार्ट जाने के लिए करीब 6 बजे बंकर छोड़ा था।  7:58 पर उन्होंने एक दोस्त को कुछ पैसे भेजने के लिए मैसेज किया और 8:10 पर हमें खबर आई कि वो अब नहीं हैं। नवीन के सीनियर ने बताया कि वो सारे लोग बिना खाए-पिए 4 दिन से बंकर में रह रहे थे। नवीन के बड़े भाई हर्षा ने बताया कि उनके भाई का इस जून में आठवाँ सेमेस्टर था। उसके बाद वो इंटर्नशिप लेने वाला था। पर अब ये कल्पना करना भी मुश्किल है कि वो हमारे साथ नहीं है।

बता दें कि भारतीय छात्र की मृत्यु की खबर मंगलवार को सुबह आई थी। इसके बाद विदेश मंत्रालय की ओर से बयान जारी करके इस खबर की पुष्टि की गई। साथ ही विदेश मंत्रालय की ओर से नवीन के परिवार के प्रति गहरी संवेदना व्यक्त की गई थी। कुछ खबरों से पता चला था कि जिस समय नवीन पर गोली चलाई गई उस समय वह Lviv के स्टेशन जा रहे थे ताकि वहाँ से पश्चिमी सीमा पहुँच सकें। वहीं अब रिपोर्ट्स आई हैं कि नवीन खाना लेने बंकर से बाहर निकले थे।

SAIF PU trains 1640 school students under  STUTI Awareness Programs

            A week-long celebrations of Science week under Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav in the form of Awareness programs under STUTI were concluded with great fervor at Panjab University on Science Day. The concluding Awareness Program held at SAIF PU was attended by science stream XI-XII school students from five schools namely, DAV Public School Sector 8C Chandigarh, DAV Public School sector 15 Chandigarh, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Chandigarh, Jawahar Navodaya Vidyalaya Ludhiana and Gian Jyoti Global Mohali.

            Prof. RK Kohli, Vice Chancellor, Amity University, Mohali graced the occasion and delivered a keynote talk on Why and How to Choose science research as a career” which highly motivated and encouraged the young minds towards the scientific field. Students enthusiastically participated in diverse scientific awareness activities such as extempore, quiz and poster making competition. Most importantly, the students visited the sophisticated analytical instrumentation laboratory to learn and understand about the various superior analytical instruments. This rare exposure was relished by all the students.

            Prof. Ganga Ram Chaudhary, Coordinator STUTI Program shared that 1640 school students from XI-XII Science stream have been benefitted through the Science Awareness Programs organized during the Science week by STUTI PU and its spokes. He emphasized on the crucial aspects and goals of STUTI program in creating a wholesome awareness related to the science and technology amongst the budding science aspirants so that they may be trained to represent a developed India while we celebrate 100 years of independence in 2047.

            The program concluded with a highly illustrious lecture from the eminent scientist, Prof. KK Bhasin, NASI-Platinum Jubilee Fellow and Emeritus Professor, PU. The event successfully and holistically fascinated the budding science students towards the wonders and opportunities in the science field. The Department of Biochemistry organized a lecture entitled “ Every tragedy can be an innovation” as a part of the lecture series being organized to celebrate 75th year of independence and National Science Day. The talk was delivered by Dr. K.S. Chahal, an alumnus of The  John Hopkins University, USA and  Chairman of the Board and Chief Scientist at Bezzzie Technologies involved in developing cutting edge technology focused on healthcare, environmental pollution and ecology- friendly energy generation. He is the recipient of the prestigious “ Golden Apple award for Excellence in Teaching “ for seven straight years. The talk was well attended by the faculty, research scholars and students of the department. During his talk he interacted with the students and  motivated them  to identify the problem and look for innovative solutions. He also encouraged the students to learn, share and collaborate in order to achieve their targets.

Webinar organized by Panjab University on “3 million years ago the vicinity of Chandigarh”

The Department of Library and Information Science in collaboration with the Department of Geology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, successfully organized a webinar today (i.e., February 28, 2022) through online mode. Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the department started the webinar welcoming the speaker and participants. Prof. Rupak Chakravarty, Coordinator of today’s webinar introduced the speaker and theme of the webinar.  Prof. Rajeev Patnaik, Speaker from Department of Geology, Panjab University, Chandigarh delivered the talk on “Chandigarh 3 million years ago”. He highlighted about Chandigarh, situated at the Himalayan foothills called the Siwaliks, houses some of the amazing fossils going back in time to almost 3 million years. The continuous movement of the Indian plate has uplifted sedimentary layers dating back millions of years. Starting from the receding of Tethys, when the ancestors of whales and sharks lived very close to the northern margin, followed by the development of the Himalayan Foreland  Basin that housed creatures such as a variety of Elephants, Horses, Giraffes, Camels, Tortoises, Sabretooth tigers, Birds, Crocodiles, fishes etc. The talk delved into how fossils were unearthed in the vicinity of Chandigarh. How do we know about their age? Where these animals have come from? and How do we know what we know about their diet and ecology? Also, what are the steps we should take to preserve this enormous heritage of ours? The talk was very informative and interesting. At the end, the question-answer session was conducted and the speaker satisfied the curiosity of participants about the conditions of that time. Today’s webinar was attended by 65 participants including many academicians from all over the country. Dr. Shiv Kumar presented a vote of thanks.

National Science Day celebrations at Panjab University

On the occasion of “National Science Day”, the Indian Science Congress Association (Chandigarh Chapter) in collaboration with the Centre for Medical Physics organized a distinguished lecture on “CHANGING LANDSCAPE OF LIFE SCIENCES RESEARCH” by Dr. A.K. Singh, CEO Biotech Park, Lucknow & former Director General (Life-Sciences) DRDO to celebrate National Science Day. The theme for National Science Day (NSD) of the year 2022 is ‘Integrated Approach in Science & Technology for Sustainable Future’. Dr. Vivek Kumar, Chairperson, Centre for Medical Physics welcomed all the participants. Prof. Baljinder Singh, Head of Nuclear Medicine Department, PGIMER introduced the distinguished speaker to the audience. Prof.  R.C. Sobti has introduced the session chair Prof. Ved Prakash Kamboj, Former Director CDRI, Lucknow to the audience and motivated all for the application of new techniques in the life-sciences. Prof. Singh has elaborated the journey of human life from interaction of molecule towards the communication between different organs. He also discussed about the use of technology in the fields of agriculture, livestock, gene editing, healthcare, insects & production of affordable, easily available and efficient medicines including vaccines. Researchers are now using artificial intelligence in the areas of biological sciences for better understanding of the different mechanisms. He highlighted the significance of human genome project and its use for prediction of human health related disorders. The lecture was very interactive, integrative and informative. Prof. R.C. Interaction of Rof Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor with Faculty Members of UIET

Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University held an interaction with  faculty and branch Co-ordinators of University Institute of Engineering & Technology (UIET). Prof. Raj Kumar was greeted at PU main guest house by Dean University Instruction (DUI) Prof. Renu Vig, Director UIET Prof. J. K. Goswamy, Co-ordinator Electronics & Communication Engineering (ECE) Dr. Naresh Kumar and other senior faculty members.

Prof. J K Goswamy apprised the gathering that three PG courses of UIET in Computer Science Engineering, Electronics & Communication Engineering and Mechanical Engineering had successfully got NBA accreditation for 3 years and the process is underway for NBA accreditation for its six UG courses.

Dr. Naresh Kumar informed that presently, M.E. (ECE) at UIET is the only National Board of Accreditation ( NBA) accredited PG course in ECE in this region.

Prof. Raj Kumar congratulated faculty members of these departments for getting PG accreditation. He motivated the other department faculty members to work towards getting all UG and PG courses accredited at UIET. He stressed the importance of working for amplifying the current strengths and removing the deficiencies. He suggested to start integrated courses in collaborative mode with other reputed institutions and undertake consultancy projects with industry. He further expressed his support for strengthening courses and taking PU to achieve greater heights.

Prof. Renu Vig informed that there is laboratory maintenance and upgradation fund that can be utilised for improving lab infrastructure. Discussion was held on the importance of offering Choice Based Credit System( CBCS)  in all departments which is the first step for implementation of NEP 2020 in the university.

Prof. Raj Kumar gave a hearing to all the issues faced by faculty members. He offered his full support to enhance the research and academics. He asked DUI to process the pending files so that growth can be achieved in UIET.

पी चिदंबरम ने कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी के यूपी चुनाव में प्रचार न करने के सवाल पर चुप्पी साध ली

उत्तरप्रदेश के पहले पाँच चरणों के चुनाव प्रचार से उनकी अनुपस्थिति ने पार्टी में कई लोगों को चौंका दिया था। राहुल गांधी ने गोवा, मणिपुर, उत्तराखंड और पंजाब में कई जनसभा को संबोधित किया लेकिन अभी तक उत्तर प्रदेश के चुनाव प्रचार से दूर रहे।  हालांकि राहुल गांधी पिछले दिनों वाराणसी गए थे लेकिन उस दौरान वे सिर्फ गुरु रविदास मंदिर गए। राहुल गांधी का रविदास मंदिर दौरा भी पंजाब चुनाव को ध्यान में रखकर ही आयोजित किया गया था। हालांकि अगले कुछ दिनों में वह प्रयागराज और अमेठी का दौरा कर सकते थे, और वहां चुनाव प्रचार अभियान में भी शामिल हो सकते थे।

उत्तर प्रदेश में विधानसभा चुनाव को लेकर सियासी घमासान जारी है। भाजपा से लेकर सपा पूरी ताकत के साथ इस चुनाव में उतरी है, मगर कांग्रेस के पूर्व अध्यक्ष राहुल गांधी की अब तक यूपी चुनाव में सक्रियता नहीं दिखी है। आज यानी रविवार को जब कांग्रेस के दिग्गज नेता और पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री पी चिदंबरम लखनऊ में प्रेस वार्ता कर रहे थे, तब उन्हें भी राहुल गांधी से जुड़े एक सवाल का सामना करना पड़ा। पी चिदंबरम ने कांग्रेस नेता राहुल गांधी के यूपी चुनाव में प्रचार न करने के सवाल पर चुप्पी साध ली।

दरअसल, पूर्व केंद्रीय मंत्री और वरिष्ठ कांग्रेस नेता पी चिदंबरम ने रविवार को राजधानी लखनऊ स्थित कांग्रेस मुख्यालय पर प्रेस वार्ता की और कहा कि यूपी में आधा चुनाव हो चुका है और कांग्रेस हर विधानसभा में अकेले दम पर मजबूती से लड़ रही है। यूपी की योगी सरकार पर निशाना साधते हुए चिदंबरम ने कहा कि यूपी के लोग मेहनती हैं, यूपी ने 8 प्रधानमंत्री दिए हैं, बावजूद इसके यूपी गरीब रह गया है।

पी चिदंबरम ने कहा कि पिछले 5 साल में यूपी की बिल्कुल भी तरक्की नहीं हुई और यूपी की प्रति व्यक्ति आय देश की औसत प्रति व्यक्ति आय से आधी से भी कम है. चिदंबरम ने नीति आयोग समेत कई अन्य एजेंसियों के आंकड़ों का हवाला देते हुए कहा कि यूपी के 12 जिलों में 50 फ़ीसदी से भी अधिक लोग ग़रीब हैं। चिदंबरम ने कहा यूपी के दो जिलों में करीब 60 फ़ीसदी लोग गरीब हैं और इन जिलों में से एक बलरामपुर है, जहां आज वोटिंग हो रही है।

उन्होंने आगे कहा कि यूपी के शहरों में हर चार में से एक युवा बेरोजगार है, जबकि यूपी में सरकारी नौकरियों में काफी वैकेंसी है। यूपी की नवजात मृत्यु दर 35 फ़ीसदी बताते हुए चिदंबरम ने कहा कि यहां पर एक हज़ार लोगों पर 36 फीसदी डॉक्टर हैं, यानी एक हजार लोगों पर एक डॉक्टर भी नहीं है। चिदंबरम ने कहा कि मैं यूपी के लोगों से पूछना चाहता हूं कि आखिर वह किस मुद्दे पर वोट कर रहे हैं, क्योंकि यूपी कई पैमानों में देश में सबसे नीचे के पायदान पर है। चिदंबरम ने कहा कि यूपी के हर 16 व्यक्ति में से एक व्यक्ति नौकरी या काम के लिए यूपी छोड़कर बाहर जाता है।
