Rahul lied about his income notice of 155.41 Crore served

Congress leaders Sonia Gandhi  and Rahul Gandhi had “escaped” incomes — over what was declared and assessed — in 2011-12 of Rs 155.41 crore and Rs 154.96 crore respectively, according to an income tax order passed after reassessing their incomes relating to Associated Journals Ltd.

Rahul Gandhi had filed a return of income declaring Rs. 68.12 lakh for the assessment year. Also as per the reassessment order, income of Congress leader Oscar Fernandes has been found to be Rs 48.93 crore, according to sources in I-T department.

In the Supreme Court, which is hearing appeal of Congress leaders against re-opening of their tax assessment, former finance minister P Chidambaram, appearing for Sonia Gandhi, said that a tax liability of Rs 44 crore against her had been erroneously imposed after reassessing her income. He said that assessing officers of the department had without application of mind came to the conclusion that Rs 141 crore of her income relating to AJL “escaped” as she did not declare it in filing her return. Rahul Gandhi is also facing liability of similar amount.

As per the I-T reassessment order, more than Rs 300 crore of Gandhis’ income “escaped” and their tax liability is around Rs 100 crore.

The assessment order was passed on December 31 against Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Fernandes after reassessing their income for the year 2011-12 and order copies given to them. These were kept in abeyance as per Supreme Court directions as the court examines validity of I-T department action.

Challenging re-opening of the tax assessment before a bench headed by Justice A K Sikri, Chidambaram said I-T officials decision defied “common sense” as the department concluded she had “escaped income” of Rs 141 crore for getting 1,900 shares in a Non-profitable Organisation ‘Young Indian’.

The Gandhis have argued they are under no legal obligation to disclose details of acquiring shares in YI since such shareholding is not “interest” in a company. They had claimed shareholding in YI, being a non-profit and charitable company, cannot result in any interest that needs disclosure as neither a director nor shareholder has any right to receive dividends in, or interest in the property of such a company.

Chidambaram contended that the only asset of the company was the debt of Rs 90 crore but the I-T department erroneously fixed this as Rs 407 crore. He also challenged the I-T department’s decision on the ground that no “valid” notice was served to them within the limitation period for reassessing the income and the department had retrospectively withdrew the tax exemption given to YI.

Chidambaram also contended that CBDT had issued circular on December 31 saying that the provisions of Section 56(2)(viii)(a) of the Income Tax Act, 1961, shall not be applicable in cases of receipt of shares by a specified company as a result of fresh issuance of shares by the specified company but the circular was withdrawn by the board on January 4. He said that board is still examining the issue and raised question on how the I-T officials could pass an order when the issue is not well settled.

His contention was strongly objected by solicitor general Tushar Mehta who told the bench the circular had no bearing in the case and said assessing officer was bound to pass order even if the matter is under examination on the board.

The court, thereafter, asked Gandhis to place before the court the circular and file an affidavit within a week. The court asked I-T to file counter affidavit within a week thereafter and posted the case for hearing to January 29.

Dismissing their petitions, the Delhi HC had said the Gandhis and Oscar Fernandes had “the primary obligation to disclose the acquisition of shares” in Young Indian (YI)

हरियाणा अनुसूचित जाति वित्त एवं विकास निगम की ओर से विभिन्न स्कीमों के लिए अब तक 24 लाभार्थियों को 9 लाख 70 हजार रुपये की राशि के बैंक ऋण उपलब्ध करवाएं गए, जिसमें 7 लाख 28 हजार रुपये की राशि के बैंक ऋण, 1 लाख 73 हजार रुपये की अनुदान राशि व 69 हजार रुपये की सीमांत राशि शामिल है।

  उपायुक्त मुुकुल कु मार ने बताया कि निगम द्वारा 3 लाभार्थी को पशु पालन के लिए एक लाख 50 हजार रुपये की राशि का ऋण उपलब्ध करवाया गया, जिसमें एक लाख 35 हजार रुपये की राशि बैंक ऋण व 15 हजार रुपये की राशि अनुदान के रूप में उपलब्ध करवाई गई। उन्होंने बताया कि एक लाभार्थी को भेड़ बकरी पालन के लिए 30 हजार रुपये का बैंक ऋण उपलब्ध करवाया गया, जिसमें 20 हजार रुपये का बैंक ऋण व 10 हजार रुपये की अनुदान राशि शामिल है। सूअर पालन के लिये दो लाभार्थियों को एक लाख रुपये की राशि उपलब्ध करवाई, जिसमें 80 हजार रुपऐ का बैंक ऋण व 20 हजार रुपऐ की अनुदान राशि शामिल है। इसी प्रकार औद्योगिक क्षेत्र के लिए एक लाभार्थी को 50 हजार रुपये की राशि उपलब्ध करवाई गई, जिसमें 41 हजार रुपये का बैंक ऋण, 4 हजार रुपये की अनुदान राशि व 5 हजार रुपये की सीमांत राशि शामिल है। ट्रेड एवं व्यापार के लिए 17 लाभार्थियों को 6 लाख 40 हजार रुपये की राशि का ऋण उपलब्ध करवाया गया, जिसमें 4 लाख 52 हजार बैंक ऋण, एक लाख 24 हजार रुपये की अनुदान राशि व 64 हजार रुपये की सीमांत राशि शामिल है। उन्होंने पात्र व्यक्तियों से अपील करते हुए कहा कि वे इस योजना का लाभ उठाए। इन योजनाओं की अधिक जानकारी के लिए संबंधित विभाग से संपर्क करें।

ग्रामीण आजिविका मिशन से जुड़ कर स्वावलम्बी बन रही महिलाएं -मुकुल कुमार

हरियाणा राज्य ग्रामीण आजिविका मिशन के तहत जिला की महिलाओं को आत्मनिर्भर बनाने के लिए सीधे रूप से वितिय सहायता एवं प्रशिक्षण देकर स्वावलम्बी बनाया जा रहा है। जिले की अधिकांश महिलाओं को आजिविका मिशन लाभदायक सिद्व हो रहा है और महिलाएं नियमित इस मिशन से जुड़कर आगे बढ रही है।

  उपायुक्त मुकुल कुमार ने इस बारे जानकारी देते हुए बताया कि आज के दौर मे ना केवल महिलाए समाज के हसिए से निकलकर आगे आ रही है अपितु ंउन नई आजीविका गतिविधियों में भी शामिल हो रही है जो कभी सिर्फ पुरूष प्रधान समाज का ही हक समझी जाती थी। उन्होंने बताया कि हरियाणा राज्य ग्रामीण आजीविका मिशन के तहत गठित फतेह स्वयं सहायता समूह मोलेवाली पिंजौर की सदस्य मनजीत कौर इसी पहल का एक उदाहरण है। गरीब परिवार की सदस्य मनजीत कौर के पति एक फैकट्री में कार्य करते है। उसने अपने स्वयं सहायता समूह  से 1 लाख रूपये उधार लेकर साझेंदारी में जिम का व्यवसाय अपने  ही गावं से शुरू किया। खालसा जिम में करीब सुबह. शाम मेें 60 व्यक्ति आते है जिससे करीब 18 से .20 हजार रूपये मासिक आमदनी हो जाती है।

इसी गावं की सदस्य कर्मजीत कौर जो फतेह स्वयं सहायता समूह  की ही सदस्य है। उसने परिवार की आमदनी बढाने के लिए पशुओं के साथ साथ एक दुकान भी खोली ताकि अतिरिक्त आमदनी भी हो सके। दुकान पर अब वो फोटो कापी, लेमिनेशन व पैन कार्ड बनाने का भी काम करती है। इससे परिवार की आमदनी बढी है और वह घर पर रहते हुए 4 हजार रूपये तक मासिक आमदनी आसानी कमा रही है।

   उपायुक्त ने बताया कि  जिला के खण्ड पिंजौर के गांव मोलेवाली की महिलाए ही नहीं अपितु पूरे पंचकुला  में हरियाणा राज्य ग्रामीण आजीविका मिशन  से जुडी महिलाएं अनेक तरह की आजीविका गतिविधयों में शामिल होकर पुरे परिवार की आमदनी में मदद कर रही है। जिला में गठित 850 स्वंय सहायता समूहों को लगभग 6 करोड़ रुपए की राशि बैंकों के माध्यम से ऋण के रूप में मुहैया करवाई गई है जबकि सामुदायिक निधि के तहत लगभग एक करोड़ रुपए की राशि प्रदान की गई है। उन्होंने बताया कि जिला की और महिलाओं को मिशन से जोड़ने के लिए प्रेरित किया जा रहा है ताकि जिला की सभी महिलाओं को आर्थिक रूप से सम्पन्न बनाया जा सके। 

पेट्रोल के दामों में राहत स्थायी नहीं

पेट्रोल और डीजल की कीमतों में सोमवार को इजाफा होने के बाद मंगलवार को राजधानी समेत चारों महानगरों में तेल के दामों में राहत मिली. सोमवार को पेट्रोल के रेट में 21 पैसे की तेजी आई थी लेकिन मंगलवार को दाम पुराने स्तर पर ही बने रहे.

कीमतों में तेजी आने से भविष्य में पेट्रोल और डीजल के रेट बढ़ सकते हैं. मंगलवार को दिल्ली, कोलकाता, मुंबई और चेन्नई में पेट्रोल के रेट पुराने स्तर क्रमश: 68.50 रुपये, 70.64 रुपये, 74.16 रुपये और 71.07 रुपये प्रति लीटर पर कायम रहे.

7 जनवरी को पहली बार बढ़ी कीमत

वहीं दिल्ली, कोलकाता, मुंबई और चेन्नई में डीजल के रेट क्रमश: 62.24 रुपये, 64.01 रुपये, 65.12 रुपये और 65.70 रुपये प्रति लीटर के स्तर पर ही बने रहे. आपको बता दें नए साल में 1 जनवरी को पेट्रोल के रेट में 19 पैसे प्रति लीटर की कटौती हुई थी.

2 और 3 जनवरी को कीमतों में कोई बदलाव नहीं हुआ, लेकिन 4 जनवरी को 21 पैसे और फिर 5 जनवरी को 15 पैसे प्रति लीटर पेट्रोल सस्ता हुआ. इसके बाद 6 जनवरी को कीमत स्थिर रहीं, जबकि सोमवार 7 जनवरी को कीमतें पहली बार बढ़ी. इसके बाद 8 जनवरी को पेट्रोल और डीजल के रेट पुराने स्तर पर ही कायम रहे.

आने वाले दिनों में बढ़ सकती हैं कीमत

पिछले कुछ दिनों में कच्चे तेल की कीमत में एक बार फिर तेजी से इजाफा हुआ है. 25 दिसंबर 2018 को 50 डॉलर प्रति बैरल तक पहुंचने वाला ब्रेंट क्रूड इस समय 57.56 डॉलर प्रति बैरल के स्तर पर पहुंच गया है. ऐसे में आने वाले दिनों में पेट्रोल और डीजल की कीमतों में एक बार फिर से तेजी देखने को मिल सकती है.

व्यस्त शेड्यूल के चलते राहुल बजाज ने आरएसएस चीफ से मुलाकात नहीं की

राहुल बजाज ने कहा कि मुझे मोहन भागवत से मिलने के लिए आरएसएस ने आमंत्रित नहीं किया था. आरएसएस के सिटी इंचार्ज राजेश लोया ने कहा था कि आप हमारे हेडक्वार्टर नहीं पहुंचे. एक बार आपकी व्यस्तता खत्म हो जाए तो आप यहां आ सकते हैं

दिग्गज उद्योगपति राहुल बजाज बॉम्बे हाईकोर्ट के पूर्व चीफ जस्टिस गांधियन चंद्रशेखर धर्माधिकार के अंतिम संस्कार में भाग लेने नागपुर पहुंचे थे. यहां उनके आरएसएस चीफ मोहन भागवत से मिलने की भी उम्मीद थी, लेकिन राहुल बजाज की आरएसएस चीफ से मुलाकात नहीं हुई. रिपोर्ट्स में कहा गया था कि राहुल बजाज ने आरएसएस चीफ मोहन भागवत से मुलाकात करने से इनकार कर दिया था.

इस पर बोलते हुए राहुल बजाज ने कहा कि मुझे मोहन भागवत से मिलने के लिए आरएसएस ने आमंत्रित नहीं किया था. आरएसएस के सिटी इंचार्ज राजेश लोया ने कहा था कि आप हमारे हेडक्वार्टर नहीं पहुंचे. एक बार आपकी व्यस्तता खत्म हो जाए तो आप यहां आ सकते हैं. जैसा कि मैं पुणे जा रहा था, मैंने कहा कि अगर समय हो तो मैं अगली बार यात्रा करने में खुशी होगी.

आरएसएस की तरफ से राजेश लोया ने कहा कि राहुल बजाज जी बॉम्बे हाईकोर्ट के पूर्व चीफ जस्टिस के अंतिम संस्कार में हिस्सा लेने यहां आए थे, लेकिन व्यस्त शेड्यूल के चलते उन्होंने मोहन भागवत से मुलाकात नहीं .

आगे उन्होंने कहा कि अगली बार अगर संभव हुआ तो वो मोहन भागवत से जरूर मुलाकात करेंगे. राहुल बजाज ने मोहन से मिलने से इनकार नहीं किया है.

ऐसा पहली बार नहीं है जब ऑफसेट डील पर सवाल उठाए गए हैं. यह डील दुनिया में हर जगह विवादों में रही है

अरुण जेटली ने लोकसभा में राहुल गांधी को निशाने पर लेते हुए कहा कि उनकी जानकारी KG के बच्चे जितनी है. उन्हें ‘ऑफसेट’ का मतलब नहीं मालूम है. जेटली ने कहा, ‘राहुल गांधी का मानना है कि अनिल अंबानी की कंपनी रिलायंस राफेल जेट की मैन्युफैक्चरिंग कंपनी है. उन्हें पता होना चाहिए कि रिलायंस ग्रुप सिर्फ ऑफसेट पार्टनर है.’

जेटली ने यह भी कहा कि राहुल गांधी को पहले किसी मामले की पूरी जानकारी जुटानी चाहिए उसके बाद ही उसपर बोलना चाहिए. जेटली ने राहुल को तो घेर लिया लेकिन क्या आप जानते हैं कि ऑफसेट डील क्या है और क्यों इस पर इतना विवाद हो रहा है.

क्या है ऑफसेट डील?

ऑफसेट एग्रीमेंट को अगर आसान शब्दों में कहें तो यह चाय में चीनी की तरह है. यानी सरकार जब किसी कंपनी के साथ डील करती है तो कुछ दूसरी कंपनियों के साथ साइड डील भी होती है. ये ही ऑफसेट डील होती हैं. वैसे तो यह डील खासतौर पर सरकार और किसी डिफेंस कंपनी के साथ ही होती है. लेकिन कई बार सिविल कंपनियों के साथ भी ऐसी डील हो सकती है.

जब भी किसी देश की सरकार किसी विदेशी कंपनी को ऑर्डर देती है तो ऑफसेट एग्रीमेंट की मांग करती है. सरकार ऑफसेट डील की मांग इसलिए करती है ताकि डील की रकम का कुछ फायदा घरेलू कंपनियों को भी हो. अगर हम ‘ऑफसेट डील’ को राफेल के जरिए समझे तो वो कुछ इस तरह होगा.

भारत सरकार ने एयरक्राफ्ट के लिए राफेल के साथ डील की. दोनों के बीच ऑफसेट एग्रीमेंट हुआ. राफेल की ऑफसेट पार्टनर बना अनिल अंबानी का रिलायंस ग्रुप. ऑफसेट डील के मुताबिक, राफेल भारत के लिए जो भी इक्विपमेंट बनाएगी, उसकी वेंडर कंपनी रिलायंस ग्रुप होगी. रिलायंस उसकी लोकल सप्लायर के तौर पर काम करेगी. इसके जरिए टोटल डील की रकम का कुछ हिस्सा रिलायंस ग्रुप के जरिए भारत आएगा. दूसरी तरफ यहां कि कंपनी को ऑर्डर मिलने से रोजगार के मौके बढ़ेंगे. ऑफसेट डील की वैल्यू 50 फीसदी से लेकर 100 फीसदी तक हो सकती है. राफेल की टोटल डील 58000 करोड़ रुपए की है. इस डील की करीब 50 फीसदी रकम घरेलू कंपनी के पास आई है. 

विवादों में क्यों है ऑफसेट डील?

राफेल के साथ डील में जब से रिलायंस ग्रुप का नाम आया है तब से विवाद और बढ़ गया है. ऐसा पहली बार नहीं है जब ऑफसेट डील पर सवाल उठाए गए हैं. यह डील दुनिया में हर जगह विवादों में रही है.

इस डील का विरोध करने वाले ऑफसेट डील को रिश्वत की तरह मानते हैं. इसके खिलाफ यह दलील दी जाती है कि किसी भी देश की सरकार किसी खास कंपनी को फायदा देने के लिए यह डील करती है. यह भी माना जाता है कि इस डील के तहत सरकार कई बार ऐसे इक्विपमेंट की डील कर लेती है, जिसकी जरूरत नहीं होती है या फिर बेस्ट क्वालिटी या वैल्यू नहीं मिल पाती है.

UFBU strike observed nationwide

Today on 26rd December 2018, United Forum of Bank Union’s, an umbrella of bankers representing more than 10 lakh Employees/Officers across the country held a massive demonstration in front of Regional Office of Bank of India, at Bank Square, Sector 17-B, Chandigarh against the against the Govt. policies of diverting people’s attention from rising NPAs by taking retrograde banking reforms and by mergers/amalgamations. Rather govt. should focus on helping the banks in recovering bad loans. More than 1000 employees/officers from different banks participated in this massive demonstration.

Speaking on the occasion Com. Sanjay Sharma, convener UFBU, Chandigarh unit strongly criticized the government that unmindful of the massive protests on 18th September 2018 and 9th October 2018, 29th Sept. 2018 as well as protests on 23rd October 2018 during the Board meetings of Bank of Baroda, Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank the govt. is moving ahead with the merger. Such amalgamations, consolidations and mergers are unwarranted at this time when there is a need to provide banking facility to the entire people of this great country. The only major problem confronting the banks as of now is the rising bad loans and its adverse effect on the health of public sector banks. The profits of the banks are getting evaporated due to enormous provisions towards bad loans. The present govt. is taking retrograde measures like merger and amalgamation which will adversely impact the economy and affect the banking clientele and banking services besides harming the interest of the workforce. Banks merger in India will systematically lead to cut in job opportunities as it will lead to closure of many bank branches. Hence UFBU decided that attacks in the shape of merger of banks should be resisted and vehemently fought back.

Com Sanjeev Bandlish, Convener of All India United Form of Bank Unions, told the gathering that the Government/IBA is going very slow with regard to the wage revision of the Bank employees and Officers due from 1st of November 2017. He criticized the attitude of the Government/IBA for their lackluster attitude towards the genuine demands of the Bankers and also rejected the meager offer of 8% by the IBA in their meeting held on 30/11/2018. UFBU as well as the IBA was called by the chief Labour commissioner for a reconciliatory meeting on 20/12/2018 but the meeting failed due to the adamant attitude of IBA. He further briefed the gathering that the only agenda of the Government is to privatize the public sector banks. The net profits are getting reduced only due to huge provisions for bad loans and not due to any reasons attributable to the employees and officers of the Banks. The government is doing little for recovery of huge NPA’s of the Public sector Banks. Com. Deepak Sharma, Com T.S. Saggu, Com Jagdish Rai, Com B. S.Gill, Com. Vipan Berri, Com. Ashok Goyal, Com. Aashish, Com. Harvinder Singh, Com. Gurbax Singh, Com Pankaj Sharma, Com. Kranti Rai and others were also present.

Nationalised Banks on Strike today: 26 Dec, 2018

Services of state-owned banks are expected to be impacted Wednesday due to a nation-wide strike call given by unions to protest against the proposed amalgamation of Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank with Bank of Baroda. This will be the second bank strike in less than a week.

Last Friday (December 21), an officers’ union of state-run banks observed a day-long strike to protest against the merger and also demanded immediate settlement of wage negotiations. Most of the banks have already informed customers about the strike.

Private sector banks will continue to function as usual.

The strike is being organised by the United Forum of Bank Unions (UFBU), an umbrella organisation of nine unions, including the All India Bank Officers Confederation (AIBOC), the All India Bank Employees’ Association (AIBEA), National Confederation of Bank Employees (NCBE) and the National Organisation of Bank Workers (NOBW). The UFBU claims membership of 10 lakh officers and staffers.

According to AIBEA General Secretary C H Vekatachalam, the conciliation meeting called by Additional Chief Labour Commissioner did not lead to any assurance and so the unions are going ahead with the strike.

During the meeting, neither the government nor the concerned banks came forward to assure that they will not go ahead with the merger, he added.

The unions claim that the government wants banks to grow in size by such mergers but even if all public sector banks are bundled into one, the merged entity will not find a place among the top 10 globally.

The government in September approved the amalgamation of Bank of Baroda (BoB), Vijaya Bank and Dena Bank — the first three-way merger in the public sector banking space.

The move follows top lender State Bank of India last year merging five of its subsidiary banks with itself and taking over Bharatiya Mahila Bank, catapulting it to among the top 50 global lenders.

On wage revision, NOBW Vice President Ashwani Rana it is due since November 2017. So far, Indian Banks’ Association (IBA) has offered 8 per cent wage hike which is not acceptable to UFBU, he said.

Narendra Modi to inaugurate India’s longest rail-road bridge in Assams

Prime Minister Narendra Modi will inaugurate the Bogibeel Bridge, India’s longest rail-cum-road connecting the north and south banks of the turbulent Brahmaputra in the eastern parts of Assam, on Christmas Day. The 4.6-kilometre-long structure will be the fourth rail-road bridge on the Brahmaputra river in Assam, the others being the Saraighat Bridge, Naranarayan Setu and the New Saraighat Bridge.

Bogibeel’s inauguration comes a year after Modi inaugurated the country’s longest bridge, the Dhola-Sadiya, over the Lohit river in 2017.

Former prime minister HD Deve Gowda had laid the foundation stone for the Bogibeel Bridge in January 1997, but work on the project began only in April 2002 when former prime Atal Bihari Vajpayee inaugurated the construction. Today is also the 94th birthday of the former prime minister.

K Chandrashekar Rao to meet Mayawati, Akhilesh Yadav in New Delhi to push for third front

Telangana chief minister and Telangana Rashtra Samithi (TRS) president K Chandrashekar Rao (KCR) will remain in New Delhi today and meet leaders of political parties in a bid to push for a non-Congress non-BJP alternative third front. On Monday, he had met met his West Bengal counterpart Mamata Banerjee in Kolkata and said that they would soon come out with a “concrete (political) plan” while asserting that the dialogue for a federal front will continue. He had also met Odisha chief minister Biju Patnaik in Bhubaneswar to stress on the a “dire need” for unification of regional parties to provide an alternative to the Congress and the BJP ahead of the 2019 general elections. “I can say certainly that there is a dire need for unification of regional parties in the country. Industrial activities, construction work to remain shut in Delhi today

All industrial activities and construction work will remain suspended today following an order from the Supreme Court-appointed Environment Pollution Control Authority (EPCA). The EPCA had on Monday imposed a three-day ban on all such activities in pollution hotspots across Delhi-NCR in view of the national capital’s ‘severe’ air quality. Delhi is facing its highest pollution level since Diwali. On Monday, 32 areas in the city recorded ‘severe’ air quality while it was ‘very poor’ in five areas, the CPCB data showed.

In NCR, Noida recorded the worst air quality with an AQI of 464. Faridabad and Ghaziabad also recorded ‘severe’ air quality and Gurgaon recorded ‘very poor’ air quality, the data showed.

The overall PM2.5 level — fine particulate matter in the air with a diameter of less than 2.5 micrometer — was recorded at 407 and the PM10 level at 581 here, the CPCB said.

Rift in Karnataka Congress

South Korean giant Samsung has finally started to roll-out the very first Android 9.0 Pie-based update for its Galaxy S9 and S9 Plus smartphones launched earlier this year. Global oil prices sink 6% as economic slowdown fears grip market

Oil prices plunged more than 6 percent to the lowest level in more than a year on Monday, pulling back sharply late in the session as fears of an economic slowdown rattled the market. US crude futures and global benchmark Brent hit their lowest levels since 2017 during the session, putting both benchmarks on track for losses of about 40 percent in the fourth quarter. The fourth-quarter price decline is likely to cause producers to throttle back on their output, said Phil Flynn, an analyst at Price Futures Group in Chicago.

Positive and constructive discussions were held on full operationalisation of the Trilateral Transit Agreement

A crucial trilateral meeting of officials from India, Afghanistan and Iran on the strategically-important Chabahar port was held on Monday during which they agreed on the routes for trade and transit corridors between the three countries.

The first meeting of the follow-up committee for implementation of the trilateral Chabahar agreement between India, Afghanistan and Iran at the level of Joint Secretary or Director General was held in the Iranian port city of Chabahar, the Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) said.

On the occasion, India Ports Global Limited company opened its office and took over operations at the Shaheed Behesti port at Chabahar.

Positive and constructive discussions were held between the three sides on full operationalisation of the Trilateral Transit Agreement for international transit and transport through the Chabahar Port. They agreed on the routes for the trade and transit corridors between the three countries, the MEA said.

It was agreed to finalise at the earliest, the protocol to harmonise transit, roads, customs, and consular matters.

Chabahar Agreement

During the meeting, it was agreed to allow cargo movement at Chabahar using Transports Internationaux Routiers Convention provisions, the MEA said.

It was decided to hold an event to promote and popularise the potential of Chabahar on February 26, 2019.

A study would also be initiated for determining measures to make the route attractive, decrease logistic costs and pave the way for smooth operationalisation of the Chabahar Agreement.

The next Follow-up Committee meeting, followed by the second Coordination Council Meeting at the level of secretaries or deputy ministers, will held in India.

Transit and Transport Corridor

In May 2016, India, Iran and Afghanistan inked a pact which entailed establishment of Transit and Transport Corridor among the three countries using Chabahar Port as one of the regional hubs for sea transportation in Iran, besides multi-modal transport of goods and passengers across the three nations.

The port in the Sistan-Balochistan province on the energy-rich nation’s southern coast is easily accessible from India’s western coast and is increasingly seen as a counter to Pakistan’s Gwadar Port, which is being developed with Chinese investment and is located at distance of around 80 km from Chabahar.

The Chabahar Port is considered a gateway to golden opportunities for trade by India, Iran and Afghanistan with central Asian countries besides ramping up trade among the three countries after Pakistan denied transit access to India.
