पंचकूला में दुर्गा शक्ति एप का पोस्टर जारी किया गया।

           इस अवसर पर श्री सन्धू ने कहा कि मुख्यमन्त्री श्री मनोहर लाल द्वारा गत माह में महिलाओं को आपातकालीन स्थिति में तुरन्त सहायता उपलब्ध करवाने के उदेश्य से इस ऐप को लाॅच किया गया था। इस ऐप को महिलाये अपने स्मार्ट फोन में प्ले स्टोर में जाकर डाउनलोड कर सकती है। श्री सन्धू ने यह भी कहा कि सभी जिलों के नोडल अधिकारी इस ऐप को अपने अपने जिलों की महिलाओं तथा लडकियों के फोन में डाउनलोड करवाना सुनिश्चित करें। इस ऐप को लांच करने का मकसद तभी सही मायने  में पूरा होगा जब सभी महिलाओं तथा लडकियों के फोन में यह ऐप होगी। बहुत जल्द ही यह सुविधा एप्पल फोन में भी उपलब्ध होगी।

Police claim the speeches made at the Elgaar Parishad, a day ahead of the bicentennial celebration of the battle of Bhima Koregaon, were one of the triggers to the violence that was witnessed in and around Pune the next day.

In the second such operation in three months, Pune police carried out simultaneous searches at multiple locations across the country and arrested a few prominent activists in connection with its investigations into the alleged Maoist involvement in the organisation of Elgaar Parishad on December 31 last year.

Police claim the speeches made at the Elgaar Parishad, a day ahead of the bicentennial celebration of the battle of Bhima Koregaon, were one of the triggers for the violence that was witnessed in and around Pune the next day.

In an early morning swoop, teams of Pune police landed on the doorsteps of activist and journalist Gautam Navlakha in Delhi, writer and activist P Varavara Rao in Hyderabad, civil rights lawyer Sudha Bhardwaj in Faridabad, activists Vernon Gonzalves and Arun Ferreira in Mumbai, Stan Swamy in Ranchi and Anand Teltumbde in Goa and searched their premises.

Some of them had already been arrested by afternoon, and others were likely to be arrested by the end of the day. Joint Police commissioner with Pune city police Shivaji Bhodke said Bhardwaj and Varavara Rao had been arrested. “More arrests are likely,” he said. The arrested persons are likely to be produced in a city court on Wednesday.

In Goa, writer and civil rights activist Anand Teltumbde, who teaches at the Goa Institute of Management, was the target of Pune police searches. Anand was not at home when the police came looking for him and he was informed about the raid by his institute’s director.

“The house in Goa was locked but they (Pune police team) opened it and carried out a search. I have not been arrested thus far,” Anand told The Indian Express.

Today’s searches come about three months after a similar operation on June 6, in which the Pune police had arrested five “urban Maoist operatives” from Delhi, Nagpur and Mumbai. Those arrested at that time included Nagpur University professor Shoma Sen and Delhi-based activist Rona Wilson of the Committee of Release of Political Prisoners.

Others to be arrested in June were Sudhir Dhawale, leader of Mumbai-based Republican Panthers Jati Antachi Chalwal, Nagpur lawyer Surendra Gadling of Indian Association of People’s Lawyers, and Mahesh Raut who had in the past been Prime Minister’s Rural Development Fellow.

Police claim that today’s searches at the six places were a result of the interrogation of these arrested people, who are currently lodged at Yervada central prison in Pune in magisterial custody. They have been charged under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act (UAPA).

While producing them in court a day after their arrests in June, police had claimed to have seized material that pointed to a plan to assassinate Prime Minister Narendra Modi in a”Rajiv Gandhi” -like manner”.

The Elgaar Parishad was organised to commemorate the 200thanniversary of the battle of Bhima Koregaon which happened on January 1 in 1818, in which a British army comprising of a large number of Dalit soldiers is said to have defeated the Peshwas. Every year on January 1, thousands of Dalits assemble in Pune and march to the village of Koregaon Bhima which has a war memorial (Jaystambh) in memory of those who died in that battle.

Among those who spoke at Elgaar Parishad were Gujarat MLA Jignesh Mevani and JNU student Umar Khalid. Police claim their investigations had shown that banned Maoist groups were involved in financing and organising the Elgaar Parishad event.

AAP makes MP nominee Atishi drop ‘Marlena’ from her name because it ‘sounds Christian’

While Atishi’s Twitter handle has changed from @Atishimarlena to @AtishiAAP, her name has also been amended on the AAP website.

AAP leader Atishi Marlena, who has been declared the party’s candidate in the 2019 Lok Sabha election from East Delhi constituency, has dropped her ‘Christian-sounding’ last name ‘Marlena’ from her Twitter handle apparently to dodge attacks from the BJP. However, AAP has refuted the reports that the party had forced her to drop her last name, saying ‘Marlena’ was a given name while her actual surname was ‘Singh’.

While Atishi’s Twitter handle has changed from @Atishimarlena to @AtishiAAP, her name has also been amended on the AAP website. The leader has, however, not given a reason for the recent changes. In fact, Atishi’s last name is also being removed from posters, banners, hoardings and poll pamphlets.

A source told The Indian Express that the party was forced to take the decision as BJP had started a “whisper campaign”, saying Atishi was a Christian and a foreigner. “Was forced to take this decision as BJP started a whisper campaign saying she is a Christian and a foreigner ever since she was declared AAP’s east Delhi in-charge,” the source said.

AAP’s official website mentions her name as only Atishi.

The source also said Atishi’s surname was ‘Singh’ and she herself decided to stop using ‘Marlena’. “But she never used that. Not even in school. Marlena was her second name give by her communist parents. But she decided to stop using that. It was her own decision,” the source added.

A former adviser to Education Minister Manish Sisodia, Atishi is the first candidate to be announced by AAP for the 2019 elections. She belongs to a Punjabi Rajput family. Several reports said that her parents, Dr Tripta Wahi and Dr Vijay Singh, who were leftists, gave her a title combining Marx and Lenin.

Calling Atishi a progressive politician, AAP joint secretary Akshay Marathe said she does not use her surname ‘Singh’ as she does not encourage caste-based politics. “A progressive politician like Atishi who DOES NOT use her caste name ‘Singh’ to ask for votes, is being targeted for using only Atishi without ‘Marlena’. Our discourse is around education and healthcare, not on identities of caste and religion,” Marathe tweeted.

Hitting out at AAP, AIMIM chief and MP Asaduddin Owaisi said this was the reality of Indian politics, where one could not have a “Christian or Muslim-sounding name” to get elected. “This is reality of Indian Electoral Politics to get Elected one cannot have a name which is /might sound like a Christian/Muslim name. That is why we have only 4% Muslims in Lok Sabha out of 14%, all this “TALK”of Secularism fails at time of Voting,” he tweeted.

Astronauts aboard the International Space Station (ISS) are conducting a blood cell experiment which may improve treatments for cancer, the media reported.

In a new video published by the US space agency as part of the AngieX Cancer Therapy study, the team led by NASA astronaut Serena Aunon-Chancellor were shown examining endothelial cells that come from blood vessels, space.com reported on Tuesday.

Several cartridge-shaped containers on board the ISS currently host the cells as they undergo varying amounts of chemotherapy exposure.

The team is conducting blood experiments in space because sometimes, cells act differently in the weightless environment of orbiting spacecraft, called microgravity.

Because these orbiting cells perform more like they normally do inside the body, cancer researchers can more accurately test the cells for chemotherapy responses, the report said.

In the video, Aunon-Chancellor said the flat endothelial containers feel “all nice and warm and comfortable,” because they are kept at body temperature aboard the space lab.

“We’ve had them for almost two months now up here in ISS. We feed them. We give them nutrients … they are like miniature crewmembers living with us.”

According to NASA, endothelial cells housed within culture dishes (in vitro) in microgravity seem to perform as if they were in blood vessels within a living organism (in vivo) on Earth.

“The study may facilitate a cost-effective method that does not require animal testing, which may help develop safer and more-effective vascular-targeted drugs,” the project page on NASA stated.

Punjab Vidhan Sabha: Speaker sets up House Committee under Sukhjinder Randhawa to probe Sukhbir’s charges on Daduwal

Acceding to the Chief Minister’s request, Punjab Vidhan Speaker on Tuesday constituted a House Committee under the Chairmanship of Cabinet Minister Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa to probe SAD president Sukhbir Singh Badal’s allegations of a meeting between Captain Amarinder Singh and Sikh preacher Baljit Singh Daduwal at the former’s residence.

Intervening on the issue raised by SAD MLA, Captain Amarinder Singh described Sukhbir as a “master of disinformation” as he had misled the House by furnishing wrong information. The tower locations released by Sukhbir did not even exist, he said, adding that the Akali leader was clearly aimed at spreading misinformation.

On the photograph showing him with Daduwal, which Sukhbir had flaunted, the Chief Minister said it was clicked during a meeting with a delegation that came to meet him at Punjab Bhavan. It was not a secret meeting and was widely covered by the media, he said. The delegation had consisted of political leaders from different political parties, such as UAD, SAD (Mann), SAD (1920), who had come with a charter of demands, including detection of sacrilege cases & arrest of those involved in sacrilege/desecration,) release & transfer of TADA detenus who continue to be in Jails both in Punjab Jails and outside despite having served their sentences, among other things. Daduwal came along with the delegation of these leaders, he added.

The fact was that if five persons of similar build and physique were made to stand with Daduwal, he would not be able to identify him, said the Chief Minister, adding that the inquiry by the House Committee would nail Sukhbir’s lies and ascertain the truth of the matter.

Pointing out that his official residence was under strict CCTV surveillance, the Chief Minister dared Sukhbir to get the footage checked.

Meanwhile, AAP MLA Harwinder Singh Phoolka lashed out at Sukhbir, saying there was nothing wrong in the Chief Minister meeting Daduwal in case such a meeting had taken place, since Daduwal was facing threats and had every right to approach Captain Amarinder Singh on the issue.

Earlier, Captain Amarinder Singh proposed the constitution of a House Committee to investigate Sukhbir’s charges, which was allowed by the Speaker Rana Kanwarpal Singh and endorsed by members of Aam Aadmi Party.

On Monday, the Chief Minister had lashed out at the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) president for attempting to mislead the House with his unfounded charges.

The allegations were made by Sukhbir soon after the government tabled in the House the Justice (retd) Ranjit Singh Commission report into the sacrilege cases. The report was earlier accepted, along with Action Taken Report (ATR), by the state cabinet at a meeting chaired by the Chief Minister. The Cabinet gave its formal nod to the tabling of the report in the House.

Asserting that he had never met Daduwal and does not even recognize him, Captain Amarinder Singh said in response to Sikhbir’s allegations that when he had gone to Bargari after the police firing, he was told that the Sikh preacher was also sitting there. But he had neither seen nor ever met him personally, said the Chief Minister.

Captain Amarinder Singh said the Akalis were merely indulging in cheap gimmicks now to divert public attention from their misdeeds of 10 years, particularly the incidents of sacrilege which they had failed to check during their rule.

He challenged the Akali leaders to join the debate on the report and not run away from it, as they had been doing on key issues in the past.

‘Govt. opposed RBI in court for first time’: Jairam

The Congress on Monday alleged that the Centre, for the first time ever, has opposed a circular of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) in a court of law, to protect the Gujarat State Petroleum Corporation (GSPC) from being declared bankrupt under the new Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code law.

“This is the first time in independent India, in 70 years, that the Government of India challenges a circular of the Reserve Bank in a court. There are always differences between the government and the RBI, but it never [reached] a court of law,” senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh told reporters at a press briefing.

Circular challenged

On February 12, the RBI had issued a circular stating that any company with over ₹2,000 crore of bank dues should be declared bankrupt if they did not clear them within 180 days. However, this RBI circular has been challenged by a number of private power companies in the Allahabad High Court, arguing that the 180-day period is too short.

On August 2, the Centre too filed an affidavit in the High Court stating that it did not agree with the order.

This move by the Centre, the Congress alleged, was aimed at protecting the GSPC that owes ₹12,519 crore to a consortia of public sectors banks, with the State bank of India (SBI) as the lead lending bank.

“I am making this statement with a full sense of responsibility that these power producers were encouraged by the Government of India to go to the Allahabad High Court to challenge this RBI circular,” Mr. Ramesh said.

He said that as per the RBI circular, the SBI as the lead bank, should initiate action to get the GSPC declared bankrupt under the Insolvency and Bankruptcy Code law.

“This demonstrates the [Modi] government’s approach to institutions and if the RBI circular is not implemented, it will be performing the antim sansksar (last rites) and RBI would have lost all autonomy and credibility,” he said.

“All efforts are being made to ensure that GSPC is not declared bankrupt because if it is done, then it will be a blemish on Prime Minister Modi’s record.”
