Sent to 14-day judicial custody; police whisked away the Delhi-based journalist after he presented himself and apologised before an Odisha Assembly committee that had summoned him for his alleged derogatory comments

The Bhubaneswar police arrested Abhijit Iyer Mitra, a Delhi-based journalist, on Tuesday in connection with two cases registered against him for having made comments on social media that allegedly hurt religious sentiments.

Iyer Mitra was whisked away by the police after he presented himself before a committee of the Odisha Assembly, which had summoned him for his alleged derogatory comment on MLAs of the state.

He was produced before the court of Judicial Magistrate First Class (JMFC), which is learnt to have been sent him to 14-day judicial custody. According to reports, Iyer Mitra is currently lodged in Jharpada jail.

Earlier, Abhijit Iyer Mitra, who described himself as an academic, begged unconditional and unreserved apology for his “stupidity” before the committee headed by former law minister and leader of opposition Narasingha Mishra.

Mishra said Iyer Mitra was asked to appear before the committee again on 2 November and submit through an affidavit if he had anything more to say in his defence.

The committee, he said, would examine the bonafide of the affidavit and then take a call on whether it needed to summon any other person or not.

The House Committee was  constituted to probe the alleged breach of privilege by him.

It may be noted that Iyer Mitra had sparked a huge row in Odisha by his postings on social media platforms.

In September, there was a hue and cry over Iyer Mitra’s comments on Konark Temple, Odia people, MLAs etc. There were two cases registered against him while the Assembly, which was in session, denounced him.

The Odisha Police had arrested him in Delhi on 20 September but he secured relief from a Delhi court that rejected the remand application of the police and asked him to cooperate with the investigation.

On Tuesday, after he was grilled by the House Committee for several hours, the city police took him for interrogation in connection with the two cases registered in Konark and Bhubaneswar.

It may be recalled that Iyer Mitra and another journalist had been on a sightseeing trip and were reportedly hosted by former MP Baijayant Panda. They had used Panda’s helicopter to go to Konark Temple.

Meanwhile, the police in Nimapada and Konark in Puri district have sought a seven-day remand of the journalist.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has been conferred with the Seoul Peace Prize for 2018 for his contribution to international cooperation and fostering global economic growth. The Ministry of External Affairs said in a statement Wednesday that Mr. Modi expressed his gratitude for the prestigious honour and in the light of India’ deepening partnership with the Republic of Korea, he has accepted the award.

“The world acknowledges. PM Narendra Modi awarded prestigious Seoul Peace Prize 2018 for contribution to high economic growth in India and world through ‘Modinomics’, contribution to world peace, improving human development & furthering democracy in India,” MEA spokesperson Raveesh Kumar tweeted.

The Ministry said the award will be presented to Mr. Modi by the Seoul Peace Prize Foundation at a mutually convenient time.

The Seoul Peace Prize was established in 1990 to commemorate the success of the 24th Olympic Games held in Seoul. The award was established to crystalise Korean people’s yearning for peace on the Korean peninsula and in the rest of the world.

Pat for ‘Modinomics’

While conferring the award on Mr. Modi, the award committee recognised his contribution to the growth of Indian and global economies, crediting ‘Modinomics’ for reducing social and economic disparity between the rich and the poor, the MEA said.

The committee lauded Mr. Modi’s initiatives to make the government cleaner through anti-corruption measures and demonetisation, it said.

The committee also credited him for his contribution toward reginal and global peace through a proactive policy with countries around the world under the ‘Modi doctrine’ and the act east policy, it said.

He is the 14th recepient of the award and the past laureates included former UN Secretary General Kofi Annan, German Chancellor Angela Merkel and renowned international relief organizations like Doctors Without Borders and Oxfam.

New Delhi: The in-fighting within the Central Bureau of Investigation (CBI) took an unprecedented turn in the wee hours of Wednesday when a government order asked the two top officials of the probe agency – CBI Director Alok Verma and Special Director Rakesh Asthana – to go on leave. Meanwhile, M Nageshwar Rao, presently a Joint Director in the CBI, has been appointed as the interim director of the investigating agency with immediate effect.

While Asthana has been accused by the CBI to be involved in a bribery scandal, the No.2 CBI official has accused his boss, Verma, of “falsely implicating” him in the case. Amid the escalating controversy surrounding the CBI, the Ministry of Personnel, Public Grievances and Pensions, issued an order dated October 23, 2018, announcing the appointment of Rao as the interim head of the agency

Rao reportedly took over the charge as the interim director at 2 am on Wednesday, shortly after the order was issued, and arrived at the CBI headquarters at around 7 am, following which he ordered the transfer of several CBI officials who are said to be the key aides of Alok Verma.

Who is M Nageshwar Rao? 

  1. Mannem Nageswara Rao is a 1986 batch IPS officer belonging to the Odisha cadre. On April 7, 2016, Rao was appointed as the Joint Director in the premier probe agency for a period of five years. Prior to that, he was the Additional Director General of Odisha Police.
  2. Rao has served as the Superintendent of Police (SP) in Odisha’s four districts – Mayurbhanj, Nabarangapur, Bargarh and Jagatsinghpur- in the past, besides being the SP, Railways, Railways at Rourkela and Cuttack and the SP of the Crime Branch.
  3. He has the distinction of the being the first officer in Odisha to use DNA fingerprinting in crime probe while investigating the a rape case in Jagatsinghpur district in 1996. He is said to be known for his tough cop-qualities and demeanour.
  4. Rao, who has previously served as the chief of the Odisha Fire Service, was awarded the chief minister’s award for his contribution during cyclones Phailin in 2013 and Hudhud in 2014. He has also received President’s Police Medal for Meritorious Service, President’s Police Medal for Distinguished Service, Special Duty Medal and Odisha Governor’s Medal.
  5. The current interim Director of CBI hails from Borenarsapur village in Telangana’s Warangal district. He completed his post graduation in Chemistry from Osmania University in Hyderabad. He did his research work in Madras IIT before joining the Indian Police Service (IPS) in 1986.

केरल के सबरीमाला मंदिर को लेकर दिए गए बयान की आलोचना होने के बाद केंद्रीय मंत्री स्मृति ईरानी ने सफाई दी है. उन्होंने कहा कि सबरीमाला के संबंध में मेरे बयान पर चर्चा हो रही है. ऐसे में मैं अपने बयान पर बयान देना चाहती हूं. एक हिंदू के नाते और एक पारसी से शादी करने के चलते मुझे अग्नि मंदिर में प्रवेश की इजाजत नहीं है.

उन्होंने आगे कहा कि मैं पारसी समुदाय, उनके पुजारियों का सम्मान करती हूं. लेकिन दो पारसी बच्चों की मां होने के नाते वहां पूजा करने के अधिकार के लिए मैं कोर्ट नहीं गई. ऐसे ही मासिकधर्म वाली पारसी महिलाएं या फिर गैरपारसी महिलाएं किसी अग्नि मंदिर में प्रवेश नहीं करती. ये दो तथ्यात्मक बयान हैं. बाकी सब प्रोपेगेंडा और मेरे खिलाफ चलाया जा रहा एजेंडा है

उन्होंने कहा, ‘जहां तक किसी दोस्त के घर खून से सने सैनिटरी पैड को ले जाने वाले मेरे बयान को लेकर मुझ पर निशाना साधा जा रहा है. तो मैं ये बताना चाहती हूं कि मुझे अब तक कोई ऐसा व्यक्ति नहीं मिला है, जिसने ऐसा किया हो.’

इससे पहले केंद्रीय मंत्री ने कहा था कि पूजा करने के अधिकार का यह मतलब नहीं है कि आपको अपवित्र करने का भी अधिकार प्राप्त है. उन्होंने कहा था, ‘मैं सुप्रीम कोर्ट के आदेश के खिलाफ बोलने वाली कोई नहीं हूं, क्योंकि मैं एक कैबिनेट मंत्री हूं. लेकिन यह साधारण-सी बात है क्या आप माहवारी के खून से सना नैपकिन लेकर चलेंगे और किसी दोस्त के घर में जाएंगे. आप ऐसा नहीं करेंगे.’

उन्होंने कहा था, ‘क्या आपको लगता है कि भगवान के घर ऐसे जाना सम्मानजनक है? यही फर्क है. मुझे पूजा करने का अधिकार है लेकिन अपवित्र करने का अधिकार नहीं है. यही फर्क है कि हमें इसे पहचानने तथा सम्मान करने की जरुरत है.’ स्मृति ब्रिटिश हाई कमीशन और आब्जर्वर रिसर्च फाउंडेशन की ओर से आयोजित ‘यंग थिंकर्स’ कान्फ्रेंस में बोल रही थी.

आपको बता दें कि सुप्रीम कोर्ट की पांच सदस्यीय संविधान पीठ ने 28 सितंबर को मंदिर में माहवारी आयु वर्ग (10 से 50 वर्ष) की महिलाओं के प्रवेश पर लगा प्रतिबंध हटा दिया था. सुप्रीम कोर्ट के खिलाफ प्रदर्शनों के चलते महिलाओं को सबरीमला मंदिर में जाने से रोक दिया गया.

भाजपा के स्टार प्रचारकों की सूची में आडवाणी नहीं

बीजेपी ने छत्तीसगढ़ में होने वाले प्रचार के लिए 40 स्टार प्रचारकों की सूची जारी की है, इसमें प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी, बीजेपी के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित शाह से लेकर कई केंद्रीय मंत्री, सांसद बीजेपी के पक्ष में समर्थन जुटाएंगे

चुनावों के मद्देनजर अब हर पार्टी कमर कस कर तैयार हो गई है. जीत के लिए सभी पार्टियों ने पुरजोर मेहनत करना शुरू कर दिया है. पार्टी अपने स्टार प्रचारकों की मदद से चुनाव में अपना परचम लहराने की कोशिश करती है और ऐसे में साल 2013 के चुनावों तक अटल-आडवाणी कमल निशान मांग रहा है हिंदुस्तान, का नारा लगाने वाली बीजेपी ने इस चुनाव में लालकृष्ण आडवाणी को अपने स्टार प्रचारकों की सूची में भी शामिल नहीं किया है.

बीजेपी ने छत्तीसगढ़ में होने वाले प्रचार के लिए 40 स्टार प्रचारकों की सूची जारी की है. इसमें प्रधानमंत्री नरेंद्र मोदी, बीजेपी के राष्ट्रीय अध्यक्ष अमित शाह से लेकर कई केंद्रीय मंत्री, सांसद बीजेपी के पक्ष में समर्थन जुटाएंगे. हालांकि बीजेपी की इस लिस्ट में पार्टी के मार्गदर्शक मंडल के नेता लालकृष्ण आडवाणी को जगह नहीं मिली है. आपको बता दें कि इससे पहले भी यूपी विधानसभा चुनाव प्रचार में लालकृष्ण आडवाणी को जगह नहीं दी गई थी. यूपी विधानसभा चुनाव में लालकृष्ण आडवाणी के साथ साथ विनय कटियार, ओम प्रकाश सिंह, सूर्यप्रताप शाही, लक्ष्मीकांत बाजपेई, रमापति राम त्रिपाठी के नाम भी हटा दिए गए थे. गवर्नर होने के चलते सूची से बाहर हुए कल्याण सिंह की जगह उनके बेटे राजबीर सिंह को दे दी गई थी.

सत्ता विमुख दलों में हाशिये पर जाते मुस्लिम नेता

कांग्रेस नेता गुलाम नबी आज़ाद ने हाल ही में यह कह सियासी तूफान मचा दिया है कि अब उनकी पार्टी के हिंदू नेता कार्यक्रमों में बुलाने से डरने लगे हैं.

कांग्रेस नेता गुलाम नबी आज़ाद ने हाल ही में यह कह सियासी तूफान मचा दिया है कि अब उनकी पार्टी के हिंदू नेता कार्यक्रमों में बुलाने से डरने लगे हैं. अलीगढ़ मुस्लिम यूनिवर्सिटी के एक कार्यक्रम में वहां के छात्रों से मुखातिब आज़ाद ने कहा कि पहले उन्हें अपने कार्यक्रमों में बुलाने वालों में 95 फीसदी हिंदू हुआ करते थे. अब सिर्फ 20 फीसदी हिंदू ही उन्हें बुलाते हैं. पिछले चार साल में देश में ऐसा माहौल बन गया है कि वोट कटने के डर से हिंदू नेता मुस्लिम नेताओं को अपने कार्यक्रमों में बुलाने से कन्नी काटने लगे हैं.

आज़ाद के इस बयान पर बीजेपी ने तीखी प्रतिक्रिया देते हुए इसे हिंदुओं का अपमान करार दिया. बीजेपी इसे लेकर कांग्रेस पर हमालावर हो गई है. कांग्रेस प्रवक्ता संबित पात्रा ने कहा है कि ऐसा बयान देकर आज़ाद ने हिंदुओं को नीचा दिखाने की कोशिश की है. बीजेपी ऐसे ही मुद्दों की तलाश में रहती है जिससे सांप्रदायिक ध्रुवीकरण हो और उसे चुनावी फायदा पहुंचे. पाच राज्यों में विधानसभा चुनाव हो रहे हैं. इनमें से तीन में बीजेपी की सरकारें हैं. राजस्थान और मध्य प्रदेश में मुसलमान करीब 10 फीसदी हैं, इन राज्यों में बीजेपी आज़ाद के इस बयान को बड़ा मुद्दा बनाकर ध्रुवीकरण कर सकती है.

आज़ाद कांग्रेस के कद्दावर नेता हैं. वो उन गिने-चुने नेताओं में शामिल हैं जिन्होंने इंदिरा गांधी और राजीव गांधी के साथ काम किया है और अब राहुल गांधी के साथ उनके बेहद करीबी और विश्वास पात्र नेताओं की हैसियत से उनकी टीम मे शामिल हैं. पार्टी में उनकी हैसियत और अहमियत का अंदाजा इस बात से लगाया जा सकता है कि कांग्रेस ने उन्हें राज्यसभा में विपक्ष बनाया गया हैं. लिहाज़ा यह नहीं माना जा सकता कि पार्टी और देश राजनीतिक मिजाज को समझने में उसे किसी तरह की चूक हुई होगी. जो उन्होंने महसूस किया बोल दिया. शायद यह बात कहने का समय उन्होंने गलत चुना है.

आजाद की हिम्मत की दाद देनी होगी कि इतने संवेदनशील मुद्दे पर उन्होंने मुंह खोला. और बगैर लाग लपेट साफ बात की. समाज को आईना दिखाया. हो सकता है कि उनका यह बयान राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश, छत्तीसगढ़ और तेलंगाना के विधानसभा चुनावों में कांग्रेस के लिए नुकसान का सबब बन जाए. पिछले साल गुजरात चुनाव में पीएम नरेंद्र मोदी ने यह कह कर बाजी पलट दी थी कि अगर कांग्रेस जीती तो अहमद पटेल को मुख्यमंत्री बनाएगी. पाकिस्तान अहमद पटेल को मुख्यमंत्री बनाना चाहता है. यह सच्चाई है कि इस प्रचार के बाद गुजरात में बीजेपी के पक्ष में ध्रुवीकरण हुआ था. इससे बीजेपी को चुनाव जीतने में काफी मदद मिली था.

गुजरात का यह प्रयोग इस बात का सबूत है कि तेजी से बदलते भारत में मुसलमानों के खिलाफ नफरत नित नए आयाम ले रही है. इसकी शुरुआत कब हुई यह तो रिसर्च का विषय है. लेकिन यह बात पक्के तौर पर कही जा सकती है कि जब से बीजेपी ने हिंदुत्व को खुले रूप से अपने एजेंडे में शामिल किया है तब से राजनीतिक परिदृश्य से मुसलमान कम होते गए हैं. साल 2014 में केंद्र में मोदी सरकार बनने के बाद राजनीति में मुसलमान लुप्तप्राय प्राणी बन गए हैं. सिर्फ कांग्रेस ही क्यों मुसलमानों के दम पर राजनीति करने वाली सपा, बसपा, राजद, जदयू और रालोद जैसी पार्टियों ने अपने मुस्लिम चेहरों पर नकाब डाल दिया है.

कांग्रेस ने गुजरात के पिछले तीन विधानसभा चुनावों में अहमद पटेल को छोड़कर किसी दूसरे मुस्लिम नेता प्रचार में नहीं भेजा. कांग्रेस आलाकमान को डर रहता है कि ज्यादा मुस्लिम चेहरे दिखेंगे तो कांग्रेस को नुकसान होगा. इस बार कर्नाटक के चुनाव में भी कांग्रेस ने मुस्लिम नेताओं को दूर रखा था. चुनावी नतीजे आने के बाद वहां सरकार बनाने के लिए गुलाम नबी आज़ाद के बड़ी ज़िम्मेदारी ज़रूर दी गई. राजस्थान, मध्य प्रदेश और छत्तीसगढ़ के विधानसभा चुनावों में भी कांग्रेस के मुस्लिम नेताओं को अलग रखा गया है. ज़ाहिर है कांग्रेस मुस्लिम नेताओं को चुनाव प्रचार में नहीं भेजकर धार्मिक आधार पर ध्रुवीकरण की गुंजाइश कम करना चाहती है.

कांग्रेस में टिकटों के बंटवारे में भी इस बात का खास ख्याल रखा जाता है कि कहीं मुसलमानों को ज्यादा टिकट देने से उसका हिंदू वोट बैंक न खिसक जाए. गुजरात के पिछले तीन चुनाव के आंकड़े देखिए कांग्रेस 6-7 से ज्यादा टिकट मुसलमानों को नहीं देती. इसी तरह राजस्थान और मध्य प्रदेश में भी पिछले तीन चुनावों में कांग्रेस के मुस्लिम उम्मीदवारों का आंकड़ा दहाई के अंक को नहीं छूता. इन राज्यों में मुसलमानों की आबादी 10 फीसदी है.

अहमद पटेल

इस हिसाब से देखें तो कांग्रेस को इन राज्यों में कम से कम 15-20 मुस्लिम उम्मीदवार उतारने चाहिए. लेकिन हिंदू जनाधार खिसकने का डर कांग्रेस को ऐसा करने से रोकता है.

मुसलमानों का डर दिखाकर सिर्फ बीजेपी ही राजनीतिक फायदा नहीं उठाती. कांग्रेस इस इस खेल की माहिर रही है. कांग्रेस मौका मिलने अब भी नहीं चूकती. साल 2011 में असम के विधान सभा चुनाव में कांग्रेस ने अनौपचारिक रूप से यही प्रचार किया था कि अगर हिंदुओं ने उस वोट नहीं दिया तो बदरुद्दीन अजमल राज्य के मुख्यमंत्री बन जाएंगे. तब असम के मुख्यमंत्री तरुण गोगोई ने सॉफ्ट हिंदुत्व की राह पर चलकर ही अपनी सत्ता बचाई थी. ये खुली सच्चाई है. अब यही काम बीजेपी खुलेआम कर रही है.

साल 2014 के लोकसभा चुनाव में मोदी ने राजनीति में धर्म का ऐसा तड़का लगाया था कि उसकी खुशबू राजनीतिक माहौल में रच बस गई है. पीएम बनने बाद मोदी ने देश विदेश के प्रसिद्ध मंदिरों में सार्वजनिक रूप से विशेष पूजा करके देश के बहुंसख्यंक समाज के बीच एक मजबूत हिंदू नेता की छवि बना ली है. इसकी काट कांग्रेस और बाकी पार्टियां ढूंढ ही नहीं पा रहीं. अब राहुल गांधी भी मंदिर-मंदिर चक्कर लगा कर खुद को मोदी से बेहतर हिंदू साबित करने में जुटे हैं. वहीं अखिलेश और मुलायम कभी कृष्ण को राम से बड़ा भगवान बताकर उनकी मूर्ती लगवाने की बात करते हैं तो कभी विष्णु भगवान की मूर्ती लगवाने का ऐलान करते है.

मौजूदा राजनीतिक हालात में बीजेपी को छोड़ हर पार्टी के सामने अपना वजूद बचाने की चुनौती है. ऐसे में मुसलमानों की चिंता के लिए भला किसके पास वक्त बचा है. मुलायम यिंह यादव और अमर सिंह 2009 के लोकसभा चुनाव में हर रोज दाढ़ी वाले मुसलमानों के साथ टीवी चैनलों पर दिखते थे. साल 2012 के विधानसभा चुनावों के दौरान पूरे यूपी में मुलायम, अखिलेश और शिवपाल की हरे चैक के रूमाल और सिर पर मुस्लिम टोपी वाले पोस्टर लगे थे. वहीं 2017 के विधानसभा चुनाव में अखिलेश ने एक भी लंबी दाढ़ी और टोपी वाले मुसलमान को अपने आसपास भी नहीं फटकने दिया. सपा के जन्म से ही उसका चेहरा रहे आज़म खान आज पार्टी में अपनी जगह ढूंढ रहे हैं.

लगभग सभी राजनीतिक दलों में मुस्लिम नेताओं का हालात आज़म खान और गुलाम नबी आज़ाद की तरह होती जा रही है. मायावती ने कभी बसपा में पार्टी की रीढ़ माने जाने वाले नसीमुद्दीन सिद्दीकी को एक झटके से पार्टी से निकाल फेंका था. मुसलमानों के वोटों पर राजनीति करने वाले राजद, जदयू ने भी मौके की नजाकत को देखते हुए अपने मुस्लिम नेताओं को चुपचाप पिछली कतार में बैठा दिया है. ऐसा लगता है कि कभी मुसलमानों के वोट हासिल करने का जरिया रहे ये मुस्लिम नेता उनके लिए आज बोझ बन गए है. आज इस बोझ को कोई ढोना नहीं चाहता.

गुलाम नबी आज़ाद

गुलाम नबी आज़ाद ने जब यह मुद्दा छेड़ ही दिया है तो उनसे भी कुछ सवाल बनते हैं. आज़ाद को खुद से और अपनी पार्टी के बड़े नेताओं से भी पूछना चाहिए कि अगर देश में सांप्रदायिक ध्रुवीकरण इस हद तक पहुंच गया है कि मुस्लिम नेताओं की मौजूगी भर से पार्टी के हिंदू वोटर खिसक जाते हैं तो फिर इसका जिम्मेदार कौन है? अगर संघ परिवार और बीजेपी सांस्कृतिक राष्ट्रवाद के नाम पर अपनी सांप्रदायिक सोच को देश के बड़े तबके के बीच ले जाने में कामयाब हुए हैं तो फिर पांच दशकों तक केंद्र की सत्ता और कई दशकों तक राज्यों की सत्ता में रहने के बावजूद कांग्रेस ऐसा माहौल क्यों नहीं पैदा कर पाई जिसमें समाज का कोई तबका किसी दूसरे के मुकाबले खुद को कमतर या असुरक्षित महसूस न करे. इसकी जिम्मेदारी तो किसी न किसी को लेनी होगी. लंबे समय तक सत्ता में रहने वाली कांग्रेस पर इसकी ज्यादा जिम्मेदारी आती है.

Singh, who is seeking a fourth consecutive term, was also accompanied by his wife, party in-charge for Chhattisgarh Anil Jain and several other leaders and party workers.

According to reports, the 66-year-old Chief Minister touched the feet of the Uttar Pradesh CM who is not only 20 years his junior by age but also has less experience in politics.

Adityanath arrived in Chhattisgarh to canvass support for BJP candidates after cancelling the weekly meeting of the Uttar Pradesh cabinet. He has been extensively campaigning for the saffron camp in election campaigns ever since his elevation as Chief Minister in March 2017.

Singh has contested from Rajanandgaon constituency in the last two elections. Before that, he contested and won from Dongargaon assembly constituency in Rajnandgaon district in the 2004 elections.

Ahead of filing nominations, Singh told reporters, “I have full faith on the strength of party workers and booth-level workers. The BJP has dedicated this election to Atal ji and each party worker has vowed to form the government for the fourth consecutive term with a thumping majority in the state”.

Commenting on Karuna Shukla, niece of former prime minister late Atal Bihari Vajpayee who has been pitted by Congress against Singh, the CM merely said that the Congress “did not get any local candidate”.

On the other hand, Shukla said that Singh has not done anything for the people in Rajnandgaon.

“Dr Raman Singh has served as CM Chhattisgarh for 15 yrs and as the MLA of Rajnandgaon from last 10 yrs but he didn’t do anything for the betterment of people there. So the Congress president sent me to fight for the people of Rajnandgaon,” Shukla was quoted as saying by ANI.

The last day of filing of nominations for the first phase of state assembly polls to be held on November 12 is 23 October. The second phase of the polls for the 90-member Chhattisgarh Assembly will be held on 20 November.

The votes will be counted on 11 December.

Hours after triggering a controversy with her comment on the issue of allowing menstruating women entry into the Sabarimala temple, Union Textiles Minister Smriti Irani took to Twitter to present her case.

Stating that she is a practicing Hindu married to a Zoroastrian, Irani said she respects the stand by the Zoroastrian priests not to allow any non-Parsi woman entry into a fire temple.

“As a practising Hindu married to a practising Zoroastrian I am not allowed to enter a fire temple to pray. I respect that stand by the Zoroastrian community / priests and do not approach any court for a right to pray as a mother of 2 Zoroastrian children. Similarly Parsi or non Parsi menstruating women irrespective of age DO NOT go to a Fire Temple,” she wrote in a series of tweets.

Irani stressed that everything other than the statement she made in the tweets are “propaganda or agenda”.

“These are 2 factual statements. Rest of the propaganda / agenda being launched using me as bait is well just that … bait,” the minister added.

Commenting on her remark that people do not take sanitary napkins soaked in menstrual blood into a friend’s home, Irani said that she is yet to find anyone who would do that.

“As far as those who jump the gun regarding women visiting friend’s place with a sanitary napkin dipped in menstrual blood — I am yet to find a person who ‘takes’ a blood soaked napkin to ‘offer’ to any one let alone a friend,” wrote Irani.

Before signing off, Irani claimed that the criticism coming her way due to the remarks made by her fascinates her that she is not free to air her own point of view as long as it is not the ‘liberal’ point of view.

“But what fascinates me though does not surprise me is that as a woman I am not free to have my own point of view. As long as I conform to the ‘liberal’ point of view I’m acceptable. How Liberal is that ??” tweeted Irani.

As a practising Hindu married to a practising Zoroastrian I am not allowed to enter a fire temple to pray.

I respect that stand by the Zoroastrian community / priests and do not approach any court for a right to pray as a mother of 2 Zoroastrian children. Similarly Parsi or non Parsi menstruating women irrespective of age DO NOT go to a Fire Temple.

The minister, who is a member of the Rajya Sabha from Gujarat, also posted a link to the video from the event where she commented on the Sabarimala temple issue.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) leader had earlier today commented on the on the entry of women within a particular age group in the Sabarimala temple at the Young Thinkers’ Conference organised by the British Deputy High Commission and the Observer Research Foundation in Mumbai.

“It is plain common sense. Would you take sanitary napkins soaked in menstrual blood into a friend’s home? You will not. And do you think it is respectful to do the same thing when you walk into the house of God? So that is the difference. That is my personal opinion,” Irani said, adding that she cannot comment on the Supreme Court verdict because she is a serving cabinet minister.

Her remarks were criticised by many.

Delhi Commission for Women Chairperson Swati Maliwal slammed Irani for her “shameful comment”.

“Shameful comment by Smriti Irani. Is menstruating woman only a sanitary pad 4 this lady? When she has periods, doesn’t she go out of her house? Doesn’t go 2 her friend’s place? Without periods, can there be babies? Horrible words reinforcing patriarchy & misogyny by a Minister!” she wrote on Twitter.

Congress national spokesperson Priyanka Chaturvedi questioned Irani for the remark.

“Forget the places of worship for a minute but as per this shocker of a statement from you should menstruating women be sent to a kaal kothri the days that she bleeds, Ms Irani? You endorse the age old taboos associated to periods? Shame!” wrote Chaturvedi on Twitter.

When Michael Safi, the South Asia correspondent of The Guardian, quoted the Union minister on the Sabarimala issue, Irani called it “fake news” and said that she will post a video soon.

India asked the Pak PM to stop supporting and glorifying terrorists and terror activities against India and its other neighbours.

A day after Pakistan Prime Minister Imran Khan condemned the ‘new cycle of killing of innocent Kashmiris’ targeting India, India, on Tuesday, termed Pakistan Prime Minister’s remark about the situation in Kashmir as deeply regrettable.

India asked the Pak PM to stop supporting and glorifying terrorists and terror activities against India and its other neighbours.

External Affairs Ministry Spokesperson Raveesh Kumar said, instead of making comments on India’s internal affairs, Pakistan leadership should look inwards and address its own issues.

Pakistan should serve the interest of the people of the region by taking credible action against all kind of support to terrorism and terror infrastructure from all territories under its control, said Kumar, adding that Pakistan’s deceitful stand on dialogue, while supporting terror and violence, stands exposed to the whole world.

The Central Bureau of Investigation  will continue the probe against its Special Director and main accused Rakesh Asthana, and others in a bribery case,. It will also take away all responsibilities from Mr. Asthana, who is No. 2 in the country’s apex investigative agency.

“The [Delhi] High Court has rejected quashing the FIR filed against him and others. So the probe will continue and status quo will be maintained only in respect of two petitioners — Rakesh Asthana and Devender Kumar,” a top CBI official told demkraticfront.com.

Mr. Asthana had not been attending office for the last two days. “All responsibilities will be taken away from him considering the sensitivity of the case in which he is an accused, and also to ensure that no fudging of documents take place,” the official said.

When asked whether Mr. Asthana has been asked to proceed on leave, he said, “The CBI Director will write to the government seeking his immediate transfer from the agency on the ground that his continued presence may hamper the probe in the case.”

It may be noted that the CBI Director has reportedly recommended his suspension from the service pending investigation in the bribery case.

The Delhi High Court on October 23 directed the CBI to maintain status quo on the criminal proceedings initiated against Mr. Asthana, who has challenged the FIR lodged against him on bribery allegations.

The High Court clarified that there was no stay on the ongoing probe.

Justice Najmi Waziri also sought the response of the agency and its Director Alok Kumar Verma, as also its Joint Director A.K. Sharma, on the separate pleas of Mr. Asthana and Deputy Superintendent Devender Kumar, who was arrested in the bribery case on October 22.

Notice has also been issued to the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT), the administrative arm of the CBI.

The court asked both Mr. Asthana and Mr. Kumar to preserve the records of the case and also their mobile records. It posted the matter for hearing on October 29.

During the hearing, the CBI said charges against Mr. Asthana are serious and the agency was investigating the matter and was likely to add more offences in the FIR.

Mr. Asthana’s counsel and senior advocate Amrendra Sharan said it was the case of an illegal registration of an FIR against the Special Director, based on the statement of the accused.

Senior advocate Dayan Krishnan appeared for Mr. Kumar for quashing of the FIR against him.

Asthana’s plea

Mr. Asthana has also sought direction be passed that no coercive action be taken against him by the CBI. He moved the petition on October 23, hours after Mr. Kumar approached the court, which agreed to give an urgent hearing.

Both the petitions were mentioned before Chief Justice Rajendra Menon, who allocated the matter for hearing before Justice Waziri.

Mr. Kumar, who was the investigating officer in a case involving meat exporter Moin Qureshi, was arrested on the allegations of forgery in recording the statement of businessman Sathish Sana, who had alleged to have paid bribe to get relief in the case.

In his statement, Mr. Sana purportedly said that in June 2018, he discussed his case with Telugu Desam Party’s Rajya Sabha member C.M. Ramesh who, after speaking to the CBI Director, assured him that he would not be summoned again. “From June onwards, I was not called by the CBI. I was under the impression that investigation against me is complete,” he is believed to have said.

The CBI has now alleged that Mr. Kumar fabricated this statement as an “afterthought… to corroborate the baseless allegations made by Asthana against CBI Director Mr. Verma to the CVC [Central Vigilance Commissioner]”. They said the agency was also looking into the alleged role of the other members of the special investigation team headed by Mr. Asthana, who had also complained against Mr. Verma.

Seven-day CBI custody for Kumar

Meanwhile, a Delhi court allowed the CBI to quiz Mr. Kumar in custody for seven days.

Special CBI Judge Santosh Snehi Mann remanded him to the custody of CBI, which had sought 10 days of his custodial interrogation, alleging that it had recovered incriminating documents after raiding his office and residence.

The CBI has claimed that Mr. Kumar was part of an extortion racket being run in the garb of investigation.

Mr. Kumar’s counsel, however, opposed the submission and moved a bail plea before the court.

The CBI has also sought the court’s nod to add some more sections in the present FIR against the accused, including Mr. Kumar.
