A webinar to celebrate International Day for Women and Girls in Science was organized at Panjab University, Chandigarh. The theme of the webinar “Mother-daughter duo in science” was introduced by Dr. Tammanna Sahrawat, Chairperson Centre for Systems Biology and Bioinformatics and Warden Kasturba Hall Girls Hostel, Panjab University. The invited speakers on the occasion were Prof. Vinod Bala Taxak, the first women emeritus scientist of MD University Rohtak and her daughter Dr. Avni Khatkar, who is working as Scientist at CSIR-NPL Delhi. Both laid emphasis on the demand of 21st century to promote equal contribution of women in the field of science, technology, engineering and mathematics.
Dr. Vinod Bala spoke about the crucial contribution of women in the growth of society and the vital role a mother plays to inculcate scientific temper in her child from an early age.
Dr. Avni shared how her mother has been a pillar of strength in her life and wind beneath her wings, which helped her to shape her successful career in science. The occasion was graced by Fellows of PU senate Prof. Sukhbir Kaur, former DSW (W) of PU and Dr. Jayanti Dutta, Deputy Director UGC-HRDC, PU, both of whom are themselves accomplished women of science. The event which hosted passionate and powerful women of science was called off with a vote of thanks by Dr. Tammanna.
