Parminder Kaur awarded with OSPP Award

Purnoor, Chandigarh May 3, 2019

            Dr Gurmeet Kaur, Department of Geology, Panjab University and her students in collaboration with other geoscientists from India and abroad are carrying out work to promote significant stones of India which were used in the architectonic heritage in the past. Under prestigious Roland Schlich travel support and IGCP project 637 two students from Dr Kaur’s lab, Mr Amritpaul Singh and Ms Parminder Kaur received funding to attend EGU general assembly 2019 which had more than 16000 geoscientists from 113 countries in attendance. Both the students presented their posters and participated for the Outstanding Student Poster and PICO (OSPP) award. Parminder Kaur (CSIR fellow) received the prestigious OSPP award for her poster presentation. Her award includes full registration fee waiver for the next EGU assembly and an award certificate. She will attend the next EGU assembly at Vienna, Austria in 2020 to receive her award.

“Ill Effects of Over Population in India”

Purnoor, Chandigarh May 3, 2019

            A special lecture was organised on “Ill Effects of Over Population in India”  by Population Research Centre(PRC), Panjab University, Chandigarh sponsored by Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, Government of India at ICSSR (NW), Chandigarh.

            The key speaker was Sh. Manu Gaur, National President, Taxpayers Association of Bharat (TAXAB). He highlighted the problems associated with over population with facts and figures. He also touched on different aspect relating to over population. The main focus of the discussion was on uneven population growth and its relationship with natural resources. He concluded that uneven population growth is a major challenge for sustainable development.

            Prof. Kiranpreet Kaur, Director PRC highlighted activities and various research projects such as Reproductive and Child Health (RCH), Maternal health, Monitoring and evaluation programmes undertaken by PRC, PU, Chandigarh. Recently Centre has initiated research studies on Swatch Bharat and Health monitoring information system (HMIS). Prof. Devinder Singh addressed and discussed various  implication of right to birth and population law. The concluding remarks were given by Prof. Raghu Ram Rao, Director NIPER, who was Chief guest on the occasion. Dr. Manmohan Singh proposed vote of thanks. The lecture was attended by Chairpersons, Faculty members and research scholars from different departments.

लोकसभा चुनाव 2019 के लिए गुरुदासपुर में चुनाव प्रचार जोर पकड़ रहा है. अभिनेता सनी देओल ने अपने भाषणों से विरोधियों पर वार करना शुरू कर दिया है. अभिनेता से राजनेता बने सनी देओल ने गुरुवार को कहा कि युवाओं के लिए रोजगार के अवसर उत्पन्न करना उनकी प्राथमिकता होगी. स्न्नी देओल को राजनीति की समझ हो या न हो उन्हे सही और गलत के बीच फर्क करना आता है।

गुरदासपुर: लोकसभा चुनाव 2019 के लिए गुरुदासपुर में चुनाव प्रचार जोर पकड़ रहा है. अभिनेता सनी देओल ने अपने भाषणों से विरोधियों पर वार करना शुरू कर दिया है. अभिनेता से राजनेता बने सनी देओल ने गुरुवार को कहा कि युवाओं के लिए रोजगार के अवसर उत्पन्न करना उनकी प्राथमिकता होगी. सनी देओल गुरदासपुर लोकसभा सीट से बीजेपी के उम्मीदवार हैं. अभिनेता ने इस बात पर जोर दिया कि वह गुरदासपुर लोगों के लिए काम करने आए हैं और मुंबई लौटने का उनका कोई इरादा नहीं हैं.

सनी देओल उर्फ अजय सिंह देओल ने अभिनेता एवं गुरदासपुर से पूर्व बीजेपी सांसद विनोद खन्ना के कार्यकाल की सराहना भी की. उन्होंने कहा कि वह इस सीमावर्ती सीट पर लोगों के वोट हासिल कर खन्ना के काम को आगे ले बढ़ाएंगे. सनी देओल ने पहली बार मीडिया से बातचीत करते हुए कहा, “हमारे लिए सबसे महत्वपूर्ण हमारे युवा हैं. मैं उनके लिए रोजगार के अवसर उत्पन्न करना चाहता हूं.”

उन्होंने कहा कि वह किसानों के कल्याण के लिए काम करना चाहते हैं. अभिनेता ने कहा, “हमारा पंजाब से नाता है और खेती हमारे खून में है. मैं उनके सभी मुद्दों को समझना चाहता हूं और उनके कल्याण के लिए हर संभव कदम उठाना चाहता हूं.”

कांग्रेस उम्मीदवार सुनील जाखड़ ने बुधवार को देओल पर पंजाब के मुद्दों की कोई समझ ना होने का आरोप लगाया था और उनसे गुरदासपुर संसदीय क्षेत्र पर अपना दृष्टिकोण साझा करने को कहा था. जाखड़ ने कहा था, “राजनीति एक गंभीर काम है, कोई ‘टाइम पास’ नहीं.”
बीजेपी के दिवंगत सांसद विनोद खन्ना के कार्यों की सराहना करते हुए देओल ने कहा, “विनोद जी ने यहां 20 साल तक काम किया है और उन्होंने यहां बहुत काम किया है. उनके बाद मुझे यहां काम करने का मौका मिला है. मैं उसी तरह काम करना चाहता हूं जैसे खन्ना ने किया था. मेरा यहां के लोगों से नाता है और मैं कभी उनको निराश नहीं करूंगा. मैं उनकी उम्मीदों पर खरा उतरने की कोशिश करूंगा.”
विनोद खन्ना ने 1998 में गुरदासपर सीट पर जीत हासिल की थी और 2017 में उनके निधन तक वह इस पर काबिज रहे. चुनाव के बाद मुंबई चले जाने की अटकलों पर उन्होंने कहा, “मैं यहां वापस जाने के लिए नहीं आया हूं.” कांग्रेस के सुनील जाखड़ अभी गुरुदासपुर से सांसद हैं, जिन्होंने 2017 उपचुनाव में जीत हासिल की थी. 2017 अप्रैल में विनोद खन्ना के निधन के बाद यहां चुनाव कराना आवश्यक हो गया था. गुरदासपुर सीट पर सातवें चरण में 19 मई को मतदान होगा.

Alumni Meet of English Department, PU

            The Panjab University Alumni Association held a film screening and discussion session with Professor M.L. Raina, who has been  Emeritus Fellow and Professor  at  the department of English and Cultural Studies at English Auditorium, here today. The film titled ‘The Remains of the Day’, based on a novel of the same name by Kazuo Ishiguro. Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations added that the session had been organised as a special gesture towards the 1960-63 batches of the department. She said that Alumni Meets can not all have the same kind of format as each group is different in its tastes, this session was organised on the request of these batches. 

            Mr Rajan Kashyap, Mr Arjan Singh, Mr Gurbirinder Singh Aujla and Mrs Neelam Dhamija were part of these batches. The alumni group were delighted to interact with Prof. M. L. Raina and also presented him with a token of their regard. Prof. Gupta informed the audience that the Alumni Association is offering a dual membership scheme to each student; each ex-student pays RS 1500 and becomes a life member of both the department and the Panjab University Alumni Association. 

Mock interviews conducted at PU IAS Centre

Purnoor,Chandigarh May 2, 2019

            The Panjab University IAS Centre conducted mock interviews for the candidates of PCS Executive and Assistant Commandant, Central Armed Police Forces on 2nd May. The panelists for the mock interviews comprised of Shri Dharam Vir, former Chief Secretary, Haryana, Mrs. Urvashi Gulati, former chief secretary  Haryana, Prof. Veer Singh, former Vice Chancellor, NALSAR, Prof. Parmjit Kaur, Director, IAS Centre and Dr. Shruti Bedi, Coordinator, IAS Centre.  

            The candidates were suitably interviewed and grilled for the upcoming interviews. The were asked questions on the situation existing in Punjab and the issues confronting the bureaucracy in the State. The candidates for the Police Forces were questioned about the role of police and on the reasons of the problems being faced by the police forces.  
            Each candidate was interviewed  for at least half an hour. They were also give  feedback as to how to improve their presentation  and answers. The candidates  greatly benefited  from the session. These interviews being conducted by the IAS Centre, Panjab University is the second in the series. 

DC requests city folks to be part of “Mega Festival – Electons 2019”

                               In anticipation of the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections to be held on 12.05.2019. All necessary arrangements have been put in place by the District Administration to ensure smooth conduct of election:-

1.      Due to sustained efforts by District Administration, there has been a substantial increase in the Electoral Population ratio. Since 01.01.2019; 19355 new votes have been registered and the EPR has increased from 57 % to 60 %.

2.      Special Emphasis was laid to bridge the gender gap and ensure increase in female participation in the upcoming Lok Sabha Election. As a result of targeted SVEEP activities for encouraging female voters, total 9585 female voters have been registered since 01.01.2019 and the Gender ratio has increased from 880 to 884.

3.      Election Commission of India has laid special emphasis on encouraging young voters to be a part of electoral process. Active participation of Schools & Colleges in the SVEEP activities was ensured through events/nukkad nataks/skits specifically targeting young voters. The age cohort of 18-19 population has increased from 2531 as on 01.01.2019 to 6911 as on now.

4.      Election Commission of India has desired that the main theme of upcoming Lok Sabha Elections is “ACCESSIBLE ELECTIONS FOR ALL” District Administration has been more than active to ensure inclusiveness of PWD’s in the upcoming elections. District & Assembly Level Committees have been formulated for the purposes of Identification and facilitation of PWD voters. The total registration of PWD voters is 1884. Further Assured Minimum Facilities are being ensured for PWD voters. 

5.      District Administration along with District Police is vigilant and alert to ensure maintenance of Law & Order in general and also ensure all precautionary measures are taken to avoid any untoward poll related violence.

6.      Sensitivity Analysis has been done of all Polling Stations and out of 410 Polling Stations, 36 have been indentified location-hyper sensitive Polling Stations, 83 are Hyper Sensitive Polling Stations, 19 are Location Sensitive Polling Station & 31 are Identified as Sensitive Polling Stations. In coordination with the District Police, Para Military Forces will be deployed as per requirement. District Administration is confident and gives assurance to all residents of Panchkula that they will be provided a peaceful and cordial environment to cast their vote without any fear or favour.

7.      Emphasis has been laid on ensuring inter-departmental coordination in the district. For the purpose of Enforcement and ensuring maintenance of Law & Order at Booth Level, Total of 13 Zonal Magistrates, 35 Sector Officers and 278 Micro Observers has been deployed.

8.      Expenditure Monitoring and Enforcement of Model Code of Conduct are being executive in true letter and spirit. Total of 6 Assistant Expenditure Observer teams, 6 Flying Squad teams, 9 Static Surveillance teams, 6 Video Surveillance teams and 2 Video Viewing teams are deployed round the clock to monitor and enforce the Model Code of Conduct and ensuring all election related expenditure by Political Parties and candidates is accounted for and no violation occurs in any manner.   

9.      There is sufficient availability of Manpower in the district and accordingly for a total of 410 Polling Stations, 452 Presiding Officers, 452 Alternate Presiding Officers and 904 Polling Officers have been deployed. Sufficient Reserve has been kept available and qualitative training is being imparted to all concerned to ensure smooth facilitation and accessibility to residents of Panchkula at Polling Stations.

10.  All pre-emptive measures are being taken to ensure proper enforcement of Model Code of Conduct accordingly. A total of 1426 Arms have been deposited, 18 persons have been put in preventive custody under relevant provisions of CrPC, a total of 10 persons have been found under preventive Section of CrPC and a total of 202 non bailable warrants have been executed by the District Police.

11.  Major Success has been achieved in controlling the illegal movement of cash, liquor and narcotics during the election period. There has been a total cash seizure of Rs. 10,00,000/- (Rs. Ten Lacs); total liquor seizure of 959 bottles and narcotics seizure of the value  Rs. 1,88,000/-.

12.  All Election related complaint are being readily addressed, a total of 107 complaints have been received which were received from various platforms such as Cvigil, 1950 complaint centered National Grievances Portal.

            All measures are being taken to ensure peaceful and smooth conduct of election is District Panchkula. I have assurance to all residents of Panchkula that no difficulty will be faced by any resident in exercising their right to franchise. It is my humble appeal to all eligible voters to be a part of this Mega Festival of Democracy and play role of an enlightened citizen cast their precious vote in the upcoming Lok Sabha Elections.

Three persons arrested while consuming liquor at public place

          In continuation of a special drive against consuming liquor at public place, yesterday, the drive was carried out at different parts of the city. Under this drive total 03 different cases U/S 68-1(B) Punjab Police Act 2007 & 510 IPC got registered in different police stations of Chandigarh in which total 03 persons were arrested while consuming liquor at public   place. All later on bailed out. The detail of police Stations in which cases U/S 68-1 (B) Punjab Police Act 2007 & 510 got registered:-PS-17 = 3 cases.

This drive will be continuing in future, the general public is requested for not breaking the law.

One arrested under NDPS Act

Chandigarh Police arrested Sachin Kumar R/o # 52, Village- Daddu Majra, Chandigarh from near slip road, Sector-38, Chandigarh and recovered 06 gram heroin from his possession on 01.05.2019. A case FIR No. 118 U/S 21 NDPS Act has been registered in PS-39, Chandigarh. Investigation of the case is in progress.

          Deepak Kumar R/o # 270, Sector- 10/A, Chandigarh reported that unknown person stolen away complainant’s Maruti Car No. CH-01X-3632 while parked in front of his residence on night intervening 25/26.04.2019.
