        Professor Sudhir Kumar, Professor of English,DES-Multidisciplinary Research Centre, Panjab University, Chandigarh will deliver the Key-  Note Address: “Revisiting the Topography of Bhakti: From Bhakti-in-Loka to Loka-in – Bhakti: The Indian Texts and Contexts”  in the National Seminar on ” The Topography of Bhakti: Social Reform Watersheds in Indian Intellectual History” ( 22-24 April 2019) to be held at Indian Institute of Advanced Study, Rashtrapati Niwas, Shimla.

         Eminent scholars such as Shri Samdhong Rinpoche, Professor Ashok Modak, Professor Kapil Kapoor, Professor Jagbir Singh, Professor Makarand Paranjape, Professor Vijay Bahdur Singh and other eminent scholars in the field of Indian Cultural Studies are participating in the National Seminar.

Team UIET Wins in IoT Theme at Deloitte Hackathon:Technotsav 2.0

        A multistage hackathon Technotsav 2.0 was organised by Deloitte India across many Engineering colleges of the country including IITs and NITs. Team UIET Chandigarh_Hackslash comprising Tushar Srivastava, IT 6th Semester, Yuvraj, IT 6th Semester and Naman Agarwal, CSE 6th Semester bagged the first position in Internet of Things (IoT) theme. They made a web application for Intruder Detection using Face Detection technique of Machine Learning and IoT. They won prize money of Rs. 75000 and got Pre Placement Offer from Deloitte. Before Finale, 4 online rounds were conducted among 14000 participants in which there was an aptitude test for all participants, students who passed the test formed team consisting of 3 members and submitted their ideas, business case and working prototype of their respective projects.

32 Teams were shortlisted for the Finale which was organised at Hyderabad Campus of Deloitte on 15th and 16th April. There were 4 themes of the Hackathon: Data Science/Machine Learning, Internet of Things (IoT), Cognitive Automation, Blockchain. 2 teams from UIET were selected among 32 finalists and they went to Deloitte Campus at Hyderabad. Other finalist team from UIET, UIET Chandigarh_Developers got Pre Placement Interview from Deloitte. Members of the team are- Sakshi Bhakhra, IT 6th Semester, Ridhima Singla, CSE 6th Semester, Sarah Mehta, CSE 6th Semester.

        The Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA)  in collaboration with the Department of Urdu, Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted a one day seminar to commemorate the 100th birth anniversary of Urdu novelist, poet, biographer and PU Alumni, Padam Shree Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir (7 April 1919 – 31 August 2016), here today.

        The seminar took place at Golden Jubilee Hall of PU. The inaugural session started with Shams Tabrezi, Nazim of mushairas, highlighting the importance and aim of the seminar.

        With his immaculate Urdu he dazzled the audience and called upon Prof. Kamlesh Mohan, to kick start the seminar by introducing the life and achievements of Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir. It was followed by Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, PU, addressing the audience and then Prof. Abul Kalam Qasmi, the chief guest of programme. In Prof. Shamsur Rahman Faruqi’s absence, Dr Ali Abbas read his key note, with this the inaugural session came to an end. 

        Before the second session commenced a spellbinding musical performance by Vinod Sehgal and Mahendra Pratap Singh zapped the audience and left everyone speechless and refreshed. The second session had some well recognised personalities of Urdu Adab delivering lectures, Tasnima and Dr. Chander Tarikha. Post lunch a  ‘guftagoo’ session between Prof. Zaman Azurdah and Ms. Nirupma Dutt had everyone zapped.

        The seminar ended with a vote of thanks delivered by Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean, Alumni Relations. 

        This seminar felt like spring. It was after what seemed like eons that Department of Urdu stole the spotlight all thanks to the teamwork of Professors of Urdu Department, Dr. Ali Abbas and Dr. Zareen Fatima, who developed this idea to raise awareness about Urdu literature on the occasion of 100th Birth Anniversary of Padam Shree Janab Kashmiri Lal Zakir.

12 kg high quality ‘Charas’ seized from two Nepal citizens

Crime Branch of Chandigarh Police got a major success in apprehending two persons and unearthing international drug racket involved in drug trafficking in India.

Today a team of Crime Branch under the supervision of  Insp. Amanjot Singh led by SI Satvinder Singh was patrolling in the area of Police Station 31, Chandigarh in regards to upcoming Lok Sabha Elections and while patrolling two persons were found present near Singh Sabha Gurudwara  Sec.31, Chandigarh and they were carrying heavy bags, on the basis of suspicion both  were stopped and on further checking their bags ‘CHARAS’  of high quality was recovered and on weighing which was found to be 12 Kg. From the accused Kiran Kumar total 11 Kg of Charas was recovered and from Khusal Paudel total 1 Kg Charas was recovered. In this regards FIR No. 129 dated 18.4.2019 u/s 20 NDPS Act PS-31, Chandigarh was registered.

Profile of accused.

  1. Kiran Kumar DC S/o Shiba Lal Dangi R/o VPO. Bhur Distt. Jajarkot, Nepal. Aged 33 years.
  2. Khusal Paudel S/o Sh. Khagu Ram R/o Paudel R/o VPO. Bhamake Distt. Dang, Nepal. Aged 35 years.

Modus Operandi 

          Accused are resident of Nepal and visited India several times. During their previous visits they came in contact with few locals of Himachal who gave them the idea of bringing Charas from Nepal. Earlier Kiran has brought approximately 2.5 Kg of Charas in year 2018 and 5 Kg Charas in February 2019 and sold it in Himachal and after selling these two consignments successfully he got the idea of brining of huge quantity and asked his friend Khusal to company him to India with this contraband. They procured this high quality Charas from Nepal and were planning to sell it off in different parts of India i.e. Himachal, Goa and Chandigarh.

Previous history of the accused.

          Kiran Kumar worked in Malaysia as a security guard and he was deported from there as he ran away from the company in which he was in contract with. He worked there for 3 years.

          The investigation of the case is under process and their police remand will be shorted to know the further links in Nepal and India.

One case U/S 68-1(B) Punjab Police Act 2007 & 510 IPC has been registered in PS-03, Chandigarh against one person who was arrested while consuming liquor at public place on 17.04.2019.

This drive will be continuing in future, the general public is requested for not breaking the law.

One arrested for Eve-teasing

A lady alleged that Dinesh Chander R/o # 986, Saini Vihar, Ph-3, Baltana, Distt. Mohali (PB) eve-teased complainant at FCI Building, Sector 31, Chandigarh on 17.04.2019. A case FIR No. 128, U/S 354, 354A IPC has been registered in PS-31, Chandigarh. Alleged person has been arrested in this case. Investigation of the case is in progress.

Accident

A case FIR No. 57, U/S 279, 337 IPC has been registered in PS-19, Chandigarh on the complaint of Ram Gopal Mishra R/o # 1651, Ph-2, Ram Darbar, Chandigarh against driver of unknown vehicle who sped away after hitting to complainant’s M/Cycle No. CH-04F-4036 at dividing road, Sector-20/30, Chandigarh on 15.04.2019. Complainant got injured and admitted in PGI, Chandigarh. Investigation of the case is in progress.

Theft

Anuwant Pahwa R/o # 1033, Sector-27/B, Chandigarh reported that unknown person stolen away two I-Phones and keys of Audi car from his residence on intervening night 16/17-04-2019. A case FIR No. 95, U/S 380 IPC has been registered in PS-26, Chandigarh. Investigation of the case is in progress.

Cheating

A lady resident of Sec-43, Chandigarh reported that she went to SBI, Sector 7, Madhya Marg, Chandigarh on 19.11.2018 to deposit cash Rs. 49,000/- in her PPF Account where one unknown person approached her to deposit cash through deposit machine installed in bank. During this he took away cash Rs. 49,000/- while depositing the said cash in machine. A case FIR No. 96, U/S 420 IPC has been registered in PS-26, Chandigarh. Investigation of the case is in progress.

MV Theft

Karan Sharma R/o # 554, Kajheri, Chandigarh reported that unknown person stolen away complainant’s Splendor M/Cycle No. PB27(T)-423 parked near his residence on 12.04.2019. A case FIR No. 89, U/S 379 IPC has been registered in PS-36, Chandigarh. Investigation of the case is in progress.
