IIT Madras Director delivers 2nd Sh. Sat Paul Mittal Memorial Lecture at UIET, PU

2nd Sh. Sat Paul Mittal Memorial Lecture was organised at University Institute of Engineering & technology, Panjab University here today in the memory of Sh. Sat Paul Mittal under the Bharti Chair of Telecom & IT Research.
Prof. Bhaskar Ramamurthi, Director IIT Madras spoke on the topic “Indian Contributions to 5G Standard” and discussed enhancements in 3GPP 5G standard to address specific Indian needs, particularly for the rural areas. Software changes in base stations are useful to increase the supported users, increase spectral efficiency and to reduce signalling overhead. He deliberated on the fact that while small cells are the trend in developed countries, low mobility large cells (LMLC) are important for coverage in developing countries like India. India is represented in ITU (International Telecommunications Union) through TSDSI (Telecommunications Standards Development Society of India). ITU meetings are attended by 180 countries for developing standards for telecommunications. IIT Madras has done work along with IIT Hyderabad and convinced ITU to include LMLC standards satisfying needs of rural India.
The lecture was presided over by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University who motivated the audience to work towards solving societal problems by implementing solutions in collaboration with industry. Prof. Pamela Kumar, Director-General TSDSI, addressed the audience and emphasized the need for patents, publications and standards. Prof. Savita Gupta, Director, UIET delivered the welcome address and Prof. Renu Vig presented the Bharti Chair activities. The lecture was attended by many senior scientists, Professors, research scholars and students.
Late Shri Sat Paul Mittal is the father of Sh. Sunil Bharti Mittal who is Chairman and Founder of Bharti Enterprises, one of India’s leading business groups with interests in Telecom, Agri-Food Business, Financial Services and realty. Late Sh. Sat Paul Mittal was actively involved in addressing problems concerning the youth. He gained prominence in Punjab’s legislative circles in 1961 when he was elected to the Legislative Council. He later became Deputy Minister for Home in Punjab. He was elected twice and also nominated by President of India to the Rajya Sabha. Throughout his political career, Shri Mittal was part of several Industry Associations and Policy making bodies like IAPPD, CPPD, AFPPD, GCPPD, and many more. He also served as Member of Parliament.; Vice President; Punjab Pradesh Congress Committee (PPCC); Member, All India Congress Committee (AICC).
