        The Avinash Chander Bali Memorial and Krishan Kishore Grover Goodwill Contests  
were organised by the department of English and Cultural Studies, Panjab University, 
here today.
         The A.C. Bali memorial contest had 22 particiapnats from various affiliated 
colleges. The judges at the occasion were Prof. Harpreet Pruthi from English 
department, Dr. Purva Kausal from University Business School, and Prof. Rajesh from 
Women Studies Centre. Participants spoke for three to five minutes on varied topics 
such as “Is It Ideal to be Politically Correct”, “India Needs Many Bangalores”, “Is 
Tinder the New Shaadi.com?” and “Gurgaon to Gurugram: What is in a Name?” First 
position was won by Sheenam Dhingra from the English department. Rashmi Sharma, 
research scholar at the department, and Surner Singh from UILS tied for second 
position. Jasleen Virk from PGGCG won third prize
        The Krishan Kishore Grover Goodwill Contest commenced with twenty-one 
participants from different colleges. The judges were Prof. Pratibha Nagpal from 
English department, Prof. Jayanti Dutta from Human Resource Development Cell, and Dr. 
Shashi Chaudhary from National Centre for Genome Research. The subjects under 
discussion were Degree in the Frying Pan, Night without Moon, How High is Punjab and 
Farmers: The Wretched of the Earth. First position was won by Damini Puri from Dev 
Samaj College for Women while Saniya Sehgal from MCM-DAV stood second. Rashmi Sharma, 
research scholar from the English department and Daanish Kaur from MCM-DAV tied for 
third prize.  
        Mr. Harjinder Pal Singh, prestigious alumnus of the department and founder of 
the Seattle Gurdwara Association spoke on everyday topics of interest such as women 
security and inter-faith harmony.
