The Department of Ancient Indian History, Culture & Archaeology organised a three days workshop on “Numismatics : Study and Research’ in collaboration with the Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana and Indian Council of Historical Research, New Delhi from February 26 to February 28, 2019.
The inaugural session, here today commenced with an address of Prof. Devinder Singh, Secretary to Vice Chancellor followed by the special address of Smt Dheera Khandewal, Additional Chief Secretary of the Archaeology and Museums Department.
Prof. Renu Thakur introduced the theme of the workshop.
The keynote address was delivered by Dr.Amiteshwar Jha, Director, Indian Institute for Research in Numismatic Studies, Nasik. He enlightened on the development of Indian coinage and also laid stress on the need of research on the post-Mauryan coinage.
The exhibition on Indian Coins has been set up in the departmental museum which was inaugurated by Sh. Ravi Prakash Gupta, Director, Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana. Several ancient coins of gold, silver, copper and lead have been exhibited in the museum. The students, scholars and general public is witnessing this and appreciating the exhibition. The first academic session was chaired by Prof. Manmohan Kumar of Maharshi Dayanand University (MDU), Rohtak and research papers were presented on the theme of the workshop by Prof. Ladman S. Thakur, Dr. ParuBal Sidhu and Mr. Anup Mitra. The vote of thanks was presented by Dr. Banani Bhattacharya, Deputy Director, Department of Archaeology and Museums, Haryana.
