Action against Drunken Driving.

                    Chandigarh Traffic Police is regularly conducting special drives against drunken driving in the city.  During this weekend (21-23 December), Chandigarh Traffic Police has booked 74 personsfor the violation of Drunken Driving.  Further, during this year upto 23.12.2018, 6210 challans have been issued for the violation of drunken driving.

  • As per Section 185 of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, offender of drunken driving shall be punishable for the first offence with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months, or with fine which may extend to two thousand rupees, or with both. 
  • Further, as per Section 20 (2) of MV Act, 1988, drunken driving offender’s driving license shall be disqualified for period of not less than six months.
  • As per Section 22(2) of Motor Vehicle Act, 1988, if a person, having been previously convicted of an offence punishable under Section 185 is again convicted of an offence punishable under that section, the Court, making such subsequent conviction shall, by order, cancel the Driving Licence held by such person.
  • Further, as per section 19 of Motor Vehicles Act, 1988 read with Rule 21 of the Central Motor Vehicles Rules, 1989, the DL of violators of the following traffic violations could get suspended for a period of 3-6 months:-
  • Driving vehicle under the influence of alcohol and drugs.
  • Speeding
  • Use of Mobile Phone
  • Jumping of Red Light

          During this year 2018 upto 23.12.2018, driving licenses of 7263 such drivers have been recommended for suspension to concerned licensing authorities.           Chandigarh Traffic Police appeals to the general public to avoid driving in drunken condition and to ensure that a sober designated person drives in such a situation or alternate means of transport are engaged.   Strict action shall be continued to be taken against such violations in the future.
