Girl arrested for shouting slogans against Govt. CPI, CPI – M and PMK immediately came to rescue

Thoothukudi (Tamil Nadu), Sep 3, 2018 – A young woman who shouted slogans against the “fascist” Modi government in an aircraft in the presence of Tamil Nadu BJP President Tamilisai Soundararajan was on Monday arrested when the plane landed here.

Sophia (25), who is said to be pursuing research in Canada, was returning home and was seated behind Soundararajan’s third row seat. Suddenly she got up and shouted slogans against the BJP and the “fascist” government at the Centre, creating a flutter in the aircraft.

On landing here, the BJP leader got into a verbal duel with the student and lodged a complaint with the police who arrested her.

Soundararajan later told the media that the girl student rose in a “menacing” manner against her and felt there was a threat to her life in the manner in which she protested.

“She is not an ordinary person,” the BJP leader said, adding she suspected her “background” and that there must be some “organisation” behind her protest which should be probed.

Leaders of various political parties including the CPI-M, CPI and PMK criticized the police “high handedness” and demanded the woman’s immediate release.

They also said Soundararajan should have handled the issue in a mature manner without resorting to gimmicks. The incident only showed that young people in the country were angry with the Central government, they said.

Karnataka local body polls: Congress edges past BJP | JD(S) comes third

Karnataka Chief Minister HD Kumaraswamy hailed the victory of the coalition parties of Janata Dal (Secular) and Congress following the results of the elections for urban local bodies in the state

On Monday, results for 2,662 of the 2,709 seats were declared with the Congress securing 982 seats and the BJP 929 in the elections that were held on 31 August.

The JD(S) came a distant third with 375 seats and others, including 329 independents, bagging the rest of the seats.

Less than four months after the Assembly election, the Congress on Monday won the most seats in Karnataka’s 105 urban local bodies, pushing the BJP to the second spot, and voicing confidence that a Congress-JD(S) combine will sweep the Lok Sabha polls.

“The Congress winning 982 of the 2,662 civic body seats across the State shows people’s confidence in the party and our coalition government with the Janata Dal-Secular (JD-S),” State Congress President Dinesh Gundu Rao told reporters here.

“The Congress cannot be written off in Karnataka any more. We (Congress and JD-S) will have a pre-poll alliance for the Lok Sabha elections which we are confident of winning,” Mr. Rao added.

In the polls for urban bodies across 22 of the State’s 30 districts held on August 31, the Congress has won 982 of the total 2,662 seats. The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) came second with 929 seats while the JD-S remained far behind with 375 seats.

Independents bagged 329 seats, the Bahujan Samaj Party (BSP) 13 and other regional parties and fringe outfits won 34 seats.

While the Congress won majority seats in 10 districts, it was looking at an alliance with JD-S in a few regions to keep the BJP out of power, as it did in the Assembly election in May which threw up a hung verdict, Mr. Rao said.

Even as the BJP won majority seats in seven districts including the coastal districts of Udupi and Dakshina Kannada, the JD-S and Congress tie-up will control most of the urban bodies in the State.

In the Assembly election, of the 224 constituencies, the BJP won 104 seats, the Congress 80 and JD-S along with BSP (38).

JD-S leader and Chief Minister H.D. Kumaraswamy termed Monday’s results a victory for the coalition government.

“The outcome shows that JD-S and Congress have won the trust of not just the rural electorate but urban voters as well,” Mr. Kumaraswamy told reporters here.

The BJP, on the other hand, blamed the JD-S and Congress for its poor showing.

“The BJP should have won more seats but we could not perform the way we wanted to because of the Congress-JD-S coalition,” BJP State unit President B.S. Yeddyurappa told reporters here.

But the BJP is confident of winning a majority in the Lok Sabha election, he said.

The BJP performed well in its traditional bastions of coastal districts while the Congress retained its position in its strongholds of northern districts.

Polling took place last Friday across 22 districts of the State spread over 29 city municipalities, 53 town municipalities, 23 town panchayats and 135 wards of three city corporations — Mysuru, Shivamogga and Tumakuru.

The polling in 45 seats of Kodagu district’s civic bodies has been postponed due to heavy rains and floods.

In the 2013 elections held for 4,976 seats, the Congress won 1,960 seats, while BJP and JD-S won 905 seats each while Independents bagged the remaining 1,206 seats.

‘Congress Thirsty for My Blood,’ Says Shivraj Chouhan After Stones Hurled at His Vehicle

Madhya Pradesh Chief Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan attacked the Congress party on Monday over Sunday’s stone-pelting incident on his vehicle.

The CM, who is from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), alleged that Congress, which is in the opposition in MP, has become bloodthirsty.

“Congress is baying for my blood. Something like this (the incident) never happened before in MP’s political history,” he told reporters in Bhopal.

“There was a struggle over ideologies. Every party used to carry out its own programme. But this kind of an incident never happened,” Chouhan said.

The MP CM then put the ball in the court of Congress president Rahul Gandhi.

“I want to ask Sonia Gandhi, Rahul Gandhi and Congress state president Kamal Nath: in which direction do they wish to take Congress? Is it fine what their leaders and workers are doing?” he said.

Unidentified miscreants threw stones on the vehicle carrying Chouhan on Sunday near Sidhi district. The CM was not hurt in the incident

Stones were hurled at Chouhan’s vehicle in Churhat area, which is the assembly constituency of Leader of Opposition Ajay Singh, Madhya Pradesh BJP spokesman Rajnish Agrawal said.

Later addressing a public meeting in the district as part of his Jan Ashirwad Yatra, Chouhan dared Singh to come in the open and fight with him.

“Ajay Singh, if you have strength come in open and fight with me,” he said, adding, “I am physically weak but I won’t be bogged down by your deeds. People of the state are with me.”

The Congress refuted the allegations stating that no one from the party was involved in the incident.

“I suspect that it was a well thought and hatched conspiracy aimed at defaming me and people of Churhat,” Ajay Singh said.

Meanwhile, MP Home Minister Bhupendra Singh said that police have arrested nine persons this morning.

“They are all prominent Congress leaders. The incident is shameful and unfortunate. It also proves that Congress can stoop to any low to come to power,” Bhupendra Singh said.

Big crackdown against ‘overground’ Maoists supporters planned, says CRPF DG

About 500 such supporters were apprehended in Chhattisgarh alone over the last one year, says CRPF Director General R.R. Bhatnagar

A first-time concerted crackdown has been launched against “overground” Maoist supporters in various states and about 500 such people have been apprehended by the security forces in Chhattisgarh alone over the last one year, the chief of country’s lead anti-Naxal operations force, the CRPF, has said.

CRPF Director General R.R. Bhatnagar told PTI in an interview that this fresh action is being undertaken by them in coordination with State police forces with an aim to deny ‘space’ to the Left Wing Extremists and to counter them beyond the field operations.

The Central Reserve Police Force (CRPF) has deployed close to a lakh armed personnel and a heavy assortment of weapons and gadgets to tackle the Left Wing Extremism (LWE) in various states of the country.

“We are now going to the villages and we are trying to see that action is taken against their (Maoists) overground supporters and workers, ‘jan militia’ and other people who give them the intelligence and local support.

“We are working with the local police and we are seeing that all the people who have been identified, either ‘jan militia’ or are wanted in different cases, they are rounded up (by the police). More than 500 people with the help of our forces have been taken into custody in the last one year in Chattisgarh. We are trying to see that their (Naxal) overall support is also reduced,” the DG told the news agency.

A senior official heading a special combat unit in Chhattisgarh later informed that all those people who have been found to have helped the Naxalite cadres in planning, aiding and executing an attack on security forces are the ones who are on their radar primarily and such persons are being tracked and apprehended or arrested as part of this new strategy to counter the LWE challenge.

‘160 Naxals have been neutralised’

Mr. Bhatnagar, a 1983-batch Indian Police Service officer of Uttar Pradesh cadre, said the paramilitary force is gradually increasing its footprints into the core Naxal areas and has opened at least 15 new camps in the highly impenetrable and inhospitable jungles and terrain of south Bastar in Chhattisgarh which shares borders with Andhra Pradesh, Maharashtra, Odisha and Telangana.

“If you were to look at figures this year, 160 Naxals have been neutralised in various states and the number of incidents (anti-Maoist operations) are maximum in Chhattisgarh followed by Jharkhand,” he said.

The CRPF boss said he has taken some major policy decisions to better orient his combat units for success in operations without suffering major reverses.

“What we have also done is hardened our defences. We have also placed emphasis that it is not only only the special forces like the CoBRA (specialised jungle warfare unit of CRPF) who have to be competent but also the GD (general duty) battalion troops who need to be properly trained as they are in the highest numbers by way of deployment and they are facing the maximum attrition,” Mr. Bhatnagar said.

The officer took charge of the force in April last year in the backdrop of two major ambushes in Chhattisgarh’s Sukma that claimed the lives of 37 CRPF men.

Strengthening of regular battalions

The regular battalions of the CRPF are the ones, he said, who go out every day in the same area where the threat is severe.

They actually are facing more threats than the special forces who largely go out for focussed operations and hence it has been decided to make the regular units stronger, the DG said.

“We have focussed to make our general duty battalion component very strong. We have infused the concept of young platoons, boys who are fit and well-trained and able to counter. We have also introduced a lot of young element in the Naxal theatre and in Chhattisgarh we have recently introduced about 5,000 new young recruits after their training,” the officer said.

The DG said as a result of undertaking these policy and operational changes, this year during three or four severe attempts of ambush by Naxals, the force has been able to successfully “break” the killing ring without suffering any casualty and they affected injury to the attacking party.

“That has got the salutary effect for the forces,” he said.

This year, the DG said emphatically, the CRPF operations and the boys are now much more confident, much more stronger and our area domination is better.

“We are also introducing a lot of new technology in terms of IED (improvised explosive device) detection and UAV (unmanned aerial vehicle) coverage, night vision devices, static surveillance like PTZ (pan, tilt and zoom) cameras not only for camp security but also for keeping a watch on the roads.

“We have tried to deny the Naxals the space to operate by deploying all these measures,” he said.

‘Naxal movement reduced’

No doubt, the DG said, the area and the number of districts in the control of the Naxals has reduced and there has been a 40 per cent decline in LWE violence incidents over a period of the last few years.

“West Bengal is almost clear except some areas on the border, Telangana has got a lot of success and now Naxal activity is restricted there close to the Chhattisgarh border.

“Today, the main movement (of the Naxals) is restricted to certain areas, primarily Chhattisgarh’s south Bastar region and also the cut-off area in Odisha which is the Odisha-Andhra Pradesh border and certain parts of Jharkhand,” the DG said.
