Imran sworn in as PM Pakistan

Imran Khan (C), chairman of Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI) political party speaks after he was elected as Prime Minister at the National Assembly (Lower House of Parliament) in Islamabad,

Imran, who described Pakistan’s founder Mohammad Ali Jinnah as his hero, has promised to transform the corruption-affected nation into an Islamic welfare state.

Imran Khan was sworn in as Pakistan’s Prime Minister on Saturday, nearly 22 years after the former cricket hero entered politics.

Mr. Khan (65), chairman of the Pakistan Tehreek-e-Insaf (PTI), was administered the oath of office by President Mamnoon Hussain at a simple ceremony held at the Aiwan-e-Sadr (the President’s House) in Islamabad.

The ceremony commenced with the national anthem, followed by recitation of verses from the Holy Quran.

Little nervous

Clad in a black sherwani, Mr. Khan was seen little nervous as he faced difficulties in pronouncing some Urdu words during the oath.

Mr. Khan, who famously captained the national cricket team to World Cup glory in 1992, has also invited some of his former teammates to witness his formal ascension to the top ministerial job in the country.

Army Chief Gen Qamar Javed Bajwa, former Indian cricketer Navjot Singh Sidhu, cricketer-turned-commentator Rameez Raja, former paceman Wasim Akram were among the special guests present at the ceremony.

Mr. Khan’s third wife Bushra Maneka was also present at the event.

The Oxford-educated Pasthun on Friday defeated his only rival and Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz chief Shahbaz Sharif in a one-sided election for the top post in the National Assembly.

Mr. Khan secured 176 votes while Mr. Sharif got 96 votes. A total of 172 votes in the 342-member lower house of parliament are needed to form a government.

In his first address to parliament, Mr. Khan had vowed to act against those who looted Pakistan.

‘Nation starving for change’

“I promise my nation today that we will bring the tabdeeli [change] that this nation was starving for,” Mr. Khan said on Friday after winning the election.

“We have to hold strict accountability in this country; the people who looted this country, I promise that I will work against them,” he vowed.

“The money that was laundered, I will bring it back – the money that should have gone towards health, education, and water, went into people’s pockets,” he said.

England vs India third Test | Woakes strikes; removes Dhawan

England team are in a huddle before the start of the first day’s play against India in Nottingham on August 18, 2018

Virat Kohli’s men will seek to channel some of Clough’s spirit as they attempt what history tells us is a nearly-impossible turnaround

England skipper Joe Root won the toss and elected to field against India in the third cricket Test at Trent Bridge in Nottingham on Saturday.

India made three changes to the playing XI, handing young wicket-keeper batsman Rishabh Pant his maiden Test cap, while fit-again Jasprit Bumrah was back in the fold replacing Kuldeep Yadav and Shikhar Dhawan came in for Murali Vijay.

England made just one change, bringing in all-rounder Ben Stokes in place of Sam Curran.

Former Secretary-General of the United Nations Kofi Annan died on Saturday. He was 80.

An official statement from The Kofi Annan Foundation was shared on Mr. Annan’s Twitter handle: “It is with immense sadness that the Annan family and the Kofi Annan Foundation announce that Kofi Annan, former Secretary General of the United Nations and Nobel Peace Laureate, passed away peacefully on Saturday 18th August after a short illness.”

The Nobel Peace Prize winner served as the U.N. special envoy to Syria, and was the first black African to be appointed as Secretary-General. He served two terms in the post from 1996-2006.

In 2016, Mr. Annan was named by the Myanmar government to head a panel to find “lasting solutions” to the conflict in Rakhine state, where human rights groups have documented widespread abuses against the minority Rohingya Muslims.

Under his leadership, the UN introduced the Millennium Development Goals in 2000, in which countries of the world committed to ending poverty within 15 years. Under his leadership two intergovernmental bodies, the Peacebuilding Commission and the Human Rights Council, were established. In 2001, Kofi Annan was awarded the Nobel Prize for Peace along with the United Nations.

Mr. Annan played a central role in the creation of the Global Fund to fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria. He launched the Global Compact initiative, the world’s largest effort to promote corporate social responsibility, in 1999.

“His wife Nane and their children Ama, Kojo and Nina were by his side during his last days,” said the statement on Mr. Annan’s Twitter handle.

‘Global statesman’

The statement said:

“Kofi Annan was a global statesman and a deeply committed internationalist who fought throughout his life for a fairer and more peaceful world. During his distinguished career and leadership of the United Nations he was an ardent champion of peace, sustainable development, human rights and the rule of law.

“After stepping down from the United Nations, he continued to work tirelessly in the cause of peace through his chairmanship of the Kofi Annan Foundation and as chair of The Elders, the group founded by Nelson Mandela. He was an inspiration to young and old alike.

“Kofi Annan was a son of Ghana and felt a special responsibility towards Africa. He was particularly committed to African development and deeply engaged in many initiatives, including his chairmanship of the Africa Progress Panel and his early leadership of the Alliance for a Green Revolution in Africa (AGRA).

“Wherever there was suffering or need, he reached out and touched many people with his deep compassion and empathy. He selflessly placed others first, radiating genuine kindness, warmth and brilliance in all he did. He will be greatly missed by so many around the world, as well as his staff at the Foundation and his many former colleagues in the United Nations system. He will remain in our hearts forever.

“The family kindly requests privacy at this time of mourning. Arrangements to celebrate his remarkable life will be announced later.”

Sidhu in Pakistan: will “thoko tali”

Cricketer-turned-politician Navjot Singh Sidhu on Friday preferred to cross the border to attend Pakistan cricket legend and his “friend” Imran Khan’s swearing-in ceremony, to be held on Saturday, over paying last tributes to his “mentor” in politics Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

All enthused, Sidhu, the Local Government Minister in the Congress Government in Punjab, crossed the Indo-Pak border at Wagah in the afternoon, when the nation was biding a final adieu to its “most loved” Prime Minister.

Not only the leaders from across the parties, but representatives from India’s neighbouring nations including Pakistan, Sri Lanka, have converged in the national capital to attend Vajpayee’s last rites.

But before leaving for Lahore, he did not forget to offer his condolences on Vajpayee’s death. “I had spiritual relations with Vajpayee sahib. Cutting across party lines, there is respect for this wonderful statesman. He elevated the BJP party from mere two seats to the majority. His demise is an irreparable loss for all of us. Vajpayee sahib will be remembered as an institution,” he said.

In an interview, Sidhu had once revealed that he had contested and won in Amritsar in 2004 Lok Sabha elections at 14 days’ notice on receiving a phone call from Vajpayee.

Sidhu, who was more than excited to attend Imran’s swearing-in, considered himself “fortunate to have a chance to be a conduit between both India and Pakistan to ease the tension and will try to work towards strengthening the trade and cultural ties between the two nations”.

For the occasion, Sidhu has got arranged a special ‘Pashmina shawl’ for Imran as a gift. “I am excited to meet my dear friend with whom I shared relationship for the past 35 years,” he said adding that since “I am representing India, this gesture is on behalf of India for Imran.”

After getting mandatory clearance from the Union Ministry of External Affairs, Sidhu was overwhelmed to receive a call from the External Affairs Minister Sushma Swaraj. “Being a law abiding citizen, I am very disciplined when it comes to the norms of a nation. I waited for clearance of my Pakistan visit. I was surprised when madam Sushma called me personally to intimate that the requisite clearance has been granted,” he said.

Sidhu has got 15-day visa for Lahore and Islamabad. Sources revealed that he will be meeting Khan on Friday night.

Earlier, Sidhu had hailed the Pak Prime Minister designate as a “man of character” and hoped that he would mend relations between the two countries.

“Men of genius are admired, men of power are feared, but men of character are trusted. Khan Sahab is a man of character. He can be trusted. Sportsmen build bridges, break barriers, unite people,” he had said.

However, Sidhu’s decision to attend Imran’s swearing-in has attracted criticism from Shiv Sena, and also from BJP senior leader Subramanium Swamy who said that the former cricketer “is “not mentally stable”, and SAD president Sukhbir Badal who advised him “to stay back in Pakistan only”.

Misty-eyed Opposition at Vajpayee’s funeral

Nirmala Sitharaman helps Manmohan Singh as Congress president Rahul Gandhi looks on.

Leaders remember how Vajpayee maintained good relations with them

In death, as in life, veteran BJP leader Atal Bihari Vajpayee played the role of a unifier as some of the top Opposition leaders, including Manmohan Singh, who became Prime Minister after him, and Congress president Rahul Gandhi, were among the first few leaders who arrived at his funeral.

Samajwadi Party (SP) stalwart Mulayam Singh was not only at the cremation but also visited the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) office to bid farewell to his long-time political opponent. Such tributes by ideological opponents, however, have also put into sharp focus a changing political culture, where a different political ideology generates adversarial relations.

“Mr. Vajpayee was infinitely more accommodating and large-hearted. He was not petty, vindictive or full of rage as the present dispensation. He was a product of the Nehruvian era,” senior Congress leader Jairam Ramesh said.

Mr. Ramesh, who recently authored a book on former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi, rejected any suggestion that the “present dispensation” under Prime Minister Narendra Modi was like the Congress under Mrs. Gandhi, when “brute parliamentary majority decided policy”.

“No. Indira Gandhi or Atal Bihari Vajpaye had many front or back channels. There was mutual respect,” he said, adding that it was not found in the current political discourse.

This seemed to be in evidence on Thursday. When the Congress chief’s microphone went silent while addressing the Sanjhi Viraasat (common heritage) convention in Delhi, Mr. Gandhi joked that BJP president Amit Shah had tried to “silence” him.

Senior leaders point out that even when the Vajpayee-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) was in power, the Congress was a fierce opponent. The party had brought out a “chargesheet” against his government on defence scams such as the “coffin scam”, the Tehelka tapes and the allotment of government land to Sangh affiliates.

But politics did not result in any kind of personal animosity. “His warm personality and his gift of friendship won him admirers and friends across the political spectrum and from every walk of life,” former Congress president Sonia Gandhi said in her tribute to the former Prime Minister.

‘Credit where due’

Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha Ghulam Nabi Azad said, “He never hesitated to give full credit to Opposition leaders whenever due.” “It is not [to speak of] the fact that Vajpayeeji had many friends — the fact that he had no enemies was his distinguishing hallmark,” former Finance Minister P. Chidambaram said.

Poet-Politician who presided over Indian politics like a giant: Atal B. Vajpayee

Vajpayee was known as a man of paradoxes — Hindutva leader who criticised Babri Madjid demolition, conducted nuclear tests but negotiated peace talks with Pakistan, shortest serving PM and also India’s first non-Congress PM to complete 5 years in office.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was a man of many talents. An acclaimed poet, a brilliant orator, a journalist and above all one of India’s most beloved prime ministers, he was also known as the “Bhisma Pitamah of Indian politics”. Known for his liberal and modern views, Atal, which means firmness in English, was the only prime minister of India to be elected three times.

Born to a middle-class family in Gwalior, Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s father, Krishna Bihari Vajpayee, was a school teacher and a poet. Vajpayee did his schooling from Saraswati Shishu Mandir and later attended Gwalior’s Victoria College and graduated with distinction in Hindi, English and Sanskrit. He completed his post-graduation with an MA in Political Science from DAV College, Kanpur, and was awarded a first-class degree.

Vajpayee joined the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh as a worker in 1939, and become a full-time worker in 1947. He had had his first brush with politics during this time. In August 1942, Vajpayee was arrested along with his brother and spent 23 days in jail during the Quit India Movement.

In 1951, along with Deendayal Upadhaya, he worked for Bharatiya Jana Sangh, a political party backed by the RSS that later became the Bharatiya Janata Party. He won the Lok Sabha election from Balrampur in 1957, and had been noticed by all for his oratory. His oratorical skills impressed the first Prime Minister Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru so much that he made a prophecy — one that would later come true. Nehru had said Atal Bihari Vajpayee was going to be the prime minister of India some day.

When Janata Dal came to power in 1977, Vajpayee served as the Minister of External Affairs. That year, he also became the first person to deliver a speech in the United Nations General Assembly in Hindi. Vajpayee joined many of his Bharatiya Jana Sangh and Rashtriya Swayamsewak Sangh colleagues, particularly his long-time friend LK Advani, to form the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) in 1980 and became the BJP’s first president.

The BJP soon became a prominent political party backing the issue of Ramjanmabhumi Mandir but interestingly Vajpayee was the lone BJP leader who was unhappy and had said demolishing Babri Madjid was the BJP’s “worst miscalculation”.

It was this rationality of Vajpayee that won him admirers across the Parliament and also made him the PM when BJP needed a person who could bridge the gap between hardcore Hinduvta that they were known for and the secularism practised by the rest of the country.

Atal Bihari Vajpayee as the Prime Minister

Atal Bihari Vajpayee was elected as the prime minister of India trice in a short span of time.

In the 1996 general elections, the BJP had emerged as the single largest party, and he was sworn in as the Prime Minister. However, he could remain on the post for only 13 days, making him also the shortest-serving prime minister of the country.

The 1998 general elections also put the BJP ahead of others. Vajpayee was again sworn in, but this time for 13 months as NDA ally AIADMK withdrew its support to his government. Elections were held again in 1999, when the BJP won majority and came to power, this time to complete its full term.

Pokhran II

During his short 13-month tenure, Vajpayee had rocked the nation and the world. Soon after assuming power, India under Vajpayee conducted five nuclear tests in the Pokhran desert of Rajasthan.

This tests conducted in May 1998, just two months after the government came to power, filled the international community with outrage. Countries like Britain, Canada and Japan vehemently criticised India, and the USA even imposed sanctions. However, the successful tests only made Vajpayee more popular domestically.

The US sanctions on India were lifted six months later.

In 1999, Atal Bihari Vajpayee embarked on a special diplomatic mission, and launched the Delhi-Lahore bus service to improve the relations between India and Pakistan. It was suspended after the 2001 terror attack on the Indian Parliament.

In May 1999, AIADMK withdrew its support from the government and Vajpayee was left to act as a caretaker till fresh elections in October 1999.

Kargil War

The Kargil War, also known as Operation Vijay, took place between May and July 1999, after Pakistani soldiers under the guise of Kashmiri militants infiltrated the Line of Control and captured strategic peaks. After two months of conflict, Indian soldiers recaptured almost the entire area. “We will get them out, one way or the other,” Vajpayee had famously said in a letter to the then US President Bill Clinton. The militants had to withdraw, having lost a large number of them to India’s retaliatory attacks.

Soon after, Vajpayee faced the third general elections, and finally took the oath as the Prime Minister on October 13, 1999.

Indian Airlines plane hijack

The first major blow to his government came in December 1999, when an Indian Airlines flight IC 814 coming from Kathmandu to New Delhi was hijacked by five terrorists and flown to Kandahar in the Taliban-ruled Afghanistan. The terrorists demanded the release of three militants, including Masood Azhar. Under extreme pressure, especially after the terrorists killed one of the passengers, the government had to relent. Masood Azhar and two others were exchanged for the hapless passengers.

Agra Summit 2001

India-Pakistan relations dominated the tenure of Vajpayee, as it witnessed incidents of all shades — from nuclear tests to bus diplomacy to terror attacks to a beginning of dialogue process.

In July 2001, a two-day summit was organized in India to initiate a dialogue between India and Pakistan. The summit was organised in Agra to resolve the long-standing disputes between the two countries. The summit, where talks were held between Prime Minister Vajpayee and Pakistani President Musharraf, however, failed — mainly because India was not satisfied with Pakistan’s pledge to halt cross-border infiltrations.

2001 attack on Parliament

On 13 December 2001, a group of armed men stormed the Parliament compound in the capital. The building was sealed off quickly and the securitymen killed the militants. This led to a stand-off between Indian and Pakistan, who remained close to a war for almost two years.

Governance

Vajpayee during his tenure was known for having encouraged the private sector and foreign investments. His pet projects — the Golden Quadrilateral and the Pradhan Mantri Gramin Sadak Yojana — proved to be an immense success and contributed to India’s economic growth.

Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan was a social scheme to provide universal access to free elementary education for children aged 6-14 years. Within four years of its launch in 2001, the number of out-of-school children dropped by 60 per cent.

Telecom revolution

With the introduction of a new policy, the Vajpayee government brought a telecom revolution in the country by replacing fixed licence fees for telecom firms with a revenue-sharing arrangement. The Bharat Sanchar Nigam Limited was created to separate policy formulation and provision of service.

In March 2000, Bill Clinton, came to India, becoming the first US President to come to the country after Dwight D Eisenhower in 1959.

In the late 2002-2003, the GDP growth accelerated at record levels. The government reformed the tax system, sent out major irrigation and housing schemes. Increase in foreign investment, modernisation of public and industrial infrastructure, the creation of jobs, a rising high-tech and IT industry helped improve the nation’s international image.

India’s relations with China improved significantly with India recognising Tibet as a part of China and China returning the favour by recognising Sikkim as a part of India.

2004 general elections

The party was confident that it would win the 2004 general elections. Riding on this confidence, the party launched a pre-election campaign, Shining India. The campaign, however, bombed and BJP lost the Parliamentary elections when the single-largest party Congress returned to power in alliance with “like-minded” parties.

Vajpayee took the moral responsibility for the loss, and decided not to take up the Leader of the Opposition position, passing it on to senior party colleague LK Advani.

Since 2004, Vajpayee had lived a quiet life almost disappearing from the political space. He was known as a man of paradoxes. BJP founder but a critic of Babri Madjid demolition. A staunch supporter of nuclear-armed India but always negotiating peace talks with Pakistan. Hater of Indira Gandhi’s politics but an admirer of the way she held herself. The shortest serving Prime Minister and also India’s first non-Congress PM to complete five years in office.

It was probably this quality of Vajpayee – the ability to see the truth and stand for it, always admiring good decisions taken by anyone — made him one of the most loved politicians of the country. The all-season leader presided over the Indian politics like a giant — even in his absence.
