Senator, lawyers not allowed to meet Nawaz

The Adiala jail authorities on Tuesday denied permission to a senator and workers of PML-N women and lawyers wings to meet former prime minister Nawaz Sharif and his daughter Maryam Nawaz.

Later, they held a protest against the jail superintendent and other officials outside the Adiala jail.

They chanted slogans against the jail authorities and in favour of Nawaz Sharif, Maryam Nawaz and Capt Safdar.

According to sources, PML-N Senator Nuzhat Sadiq arrived at Adiala jail to meet Nawaz Sharif and Maryam Nawaz.

The jail authorities told the senator that under the laws, she could meet the former premier and Maryam Nawaz only on Thursday. The senator returned home without seeing her leaders.

A group of PML-N Women Wing workers from Khyber-Pakhtunkhwa led by President Tahira Bukhari also reached Adiala jail to show solidarity with the jailed former prime minister and his daughter.

The women wing workers staged a protest outside the jail and pledged to support Nawaz Sharif in the upcoming general elections.

Similarly, a delegation of lawyers associated with PML-N Lawyers Wing Rawalpindi also visited Adiala jail and tried to meet the detained party Quaid. But they too were denied permission after which they staged a protest.

They chanted slogans against the government and the jail administration and in favour of Nawaz Sharif and his daughter.

Jupiter’s Moon Count Reaches 79, Including Tiny ‘Oddball’

Galileo detected Jupiter’s four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto in 1610. The latest count of 79 known planets includes eight that have not been seen for several years.

Astronomers are still finding moons at Jupiter, 400 years after Galileo used his spyglass to spot the first ones.

The latest discovery of a dozen small moons brings the total to 79, the most of any planet in our solar system.

Scientists were looking for objects on the fringes of the solar system last year when they pointed their telescopes close to Jupiter’s backyard, according to Scott Sheppard of the Carnegie Institute for Science in Washington.

They saw a new group of objects moving around the giant gas planet but didn’t know whether they were moons or asteroids passing near Jupiter.

“There was no eureka moment,” said Sheppard, who led the team of astronomers. “It took a year to figure out what these objects were.”

They all turned out to be moons of Jupiter. The confirmation of 10 was announced Tuesday. Two were confirmed earlier.

The moons had not been spotted before because they are tiny. They are about one to two kilometers (miles) across, said astronomer Gareth Williams of the International Astronomical Union’s Minor Planet Center.

And he thinks Jupiter might have even more moons just as small waiting to be found.

“We just haven’t observed them enough,” said Williams, who helped confirm the moons’ orbits.

The team is calling one of the new moons an ‘oddball’ because of its unusual orbit. Sheppard’s girlfriend came up with a name for it: Valetudo, the great-granddaughter of the Roman god Jupiter.

Valetudo is in Jupiter’s distant, outer swarm of moons that circles in the opposite direction of the planet’s rotation. Yet it’s orbiting in the same direction as the planet, against the swarm’s traffic.

“This moon is going down the highway the wrong way,” Sheppard said.

Scientists believe moons like Valetudo and its siblings appeared soon after Jupiter formed. The planet must have acted like a vacuum, sucking up all the material that was around it. Some of that debris was captured as moons.

“What astonishes me about these moons is that they’re the remnants of what the planet formed from,” he said.

Telescopes in Chile, Hawaii and Arizona were used for the latest discovery and confirmation.

Galileo detected Jupiter’s four largest moons, Io, Europa, Ganymede and Callisto in 1610. The latest count of 79 known planets includes eight that have not been seen for several years. Saturn is next with 61, followed by Uranus with 27 and Neptune with 14.

Mars has two, Earth has one and Mercury and Venus have none.

“We cannot allow these corrupt officers from Islamabad to continue the atrocities. It is totally unacceptable,” Rohrabacher

Dana Rohrabacher who was earlier a close friend of Pakistan, alleged that the corrupt Pakistani Army officers are involved in the extrajudicial killing of Mohajirs in Karachi.

Pakistan’s powerful army is supporting religious extremism in the country, an influential US lawmaker has alleged as he voiced his support to the rights of the Mohajir community.

The term Mohajir is used to describe the Urdu-speaking immigrants who left India in 1947 and came to Pakistan. A large chunk of them settled in the Sindh province.

Addressing the participants of the conference ‘Mohajir Day on the Capitol Hill’, organised by the Muttahida Quami Movement (MQM), Congressman Dana Rohrabacher alleged that the corrupt Pakistani Army officers are involved in the extrajudicial killing of Mohajirs in Karachi.

“They are openly supporting religious extremists. This is not acceptable at any cost,” said Congressman Rohrabacher, a close aide to former US president Ronald Regan.

Rohrabacher, the lawmaker from California who was earlier a close friend of Pakistan, is now one of the strongest critics of Islamabad for it providing safe heaven to terrorists.

The conference was attended by workers and office bearers of MQM from 12 chapters of the US, Canada and the UK, along with representatives of think-tanks, senior journalists, bloggers and people from different walks of life.

A member of the House Foreign Affairs, Rohrabacher said that Mohajirs in general and workers of MQM are suffering in Pakistan.

“I extend my full support to them,” he said, adding that every citizen has every right to defend his freedom and basic rights and the United States is fully aware of the crimes of the corrupt officers from Islamabad.

“We cannot allow these corrupt officers from Islamabad to continue the atrocities. It is totally unacceptable,” Rohrabacher said, adding that it is not at all acceptable that Islamabad is openly supporting the religious extremists and fanatics.

He said “we want to make Karachi a peaceful and prosperous city like Singapore and we will support MQM to get rid of these atrocities”.

Addressing the participants, Nadeem Ehsan, convener of MQM, said that the basic human rights of Mohajirs are violated and they are not even allowed to vote to whom they want, and therefore, the founder and leader of MQM, Altaf Hussain has announced to boycott the upcoming elections on July 25.

Indian rights watchdog sounds alarm over farmer suicides

India’s rights watchdog has expressed concern over the suicide of hundreds of farmers in the western state of Maharashtra in recent months, calling for an official response. Despite state aid, Indian agriculture is in a dire state due to drought, failed crops, poor infrastructure and low prices for produce, but Maharashtra is particularly badly hit.

The state government there said last weekend that 639 farmers committed suicide between March and May, an average of seven every day. In recent years the state has seen several protests by farmers turning violent.

The National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) has told the federal and state governments to report back in a month over the crisis and to spell out what government welfare schemes are available.

Prime Minister Narendra Modi, likely to seek re-election next year, has promised to double the income of farmers by 2022 and launched a $1.3-billion insurance scheme to protect millions of them. But Maharashtra Revenue Minister Chandrakant Patil told the state assembly on Saturday that only 174 farmers had been given compensation, with 122 cases rejected and 329 under review.

Opponents of the government say more than 13,000 farmers have killed themselves Maharashtra since Modi’s BJP came to power in 2014 both in Maharashtra and at federal level.

Jadhav case, ICJ will now fix the matter for hearing

Kulbhushan Sudhir Jadhav an ex commander of Indian navy, owned a cargo business in Iran and had been working out of Bandar Abbas and Chabahar ports. “It appears that he strayed into Pakistani waters. But there is also a possibility that he was lured into Pakistan sometime back and fake documents were created on him by the ISI.

The International Court of Justice (ICJ) on January 23 gave a timeline to both Pakistan and India for filing another round of memorials in the case.

Foreign Office Director General for India Dr. Fareeha Bugti submitted the reply on Tuesday, Radio Pakistan reported, quoting the Foreign Office spokesperson.

Pakistan in its rejoinder, gave detailed answers to India’s submissions to the international court, the spokesperson said, adding that Pakistan also responded to Indian objections in over 400 pages reply.
Pakistan’s counter-memorial was in response to pleadings filed by India in the Hague-based ICJ on April 17.

The ICJ will now fix the matter for hearing.

India had moved the ICJ in May last year after Jadhav, 48, was sentenced to death by a Pakistani military court on charges of espionage and terrorism.

A 10-member bench of the ICJ on May 18, 2017 had restrained Pakistan from executing Jadhav till adjudication of the case

Supreme court advises for a tough law against Lynching

‘There cannot be a right higher than the right to live with dignity and further to be treated with humaneness that the law provides’

The limited role, if any, of a vigilante is to report an incident to the police and not become the law and punisher himself, the Supreme Court observed on Tuesday.

A citizen is accountable to the law, which gives him wings to realise his aspirations. In return, the law demands the citizen to pay it obeisance.

When vigilantes involve themselves in lynchings or any other brutalities, they put their accountability to the law on the ventilator.

This is how the Supreme Court explained the relationship between the citizen and the law, and how vigilantism and lynchings destroy the very “majesty of law.”

The court held that it is every person’s duty to protect lives and human rights. No act of a citizen is to be adjudged by any kind of community under the guise of protectors of law.

“There cannot be a right higher than the right to live with dignity and further to be treated with humaneness that the law provides … No citizen can assault the human dignity of another, for such an action would comatose the majesty of law,” the judgment by Chief Justice Dipak Misra for a three-judge Bench observed.

The government cannot allow self-styled vigilantes to take over from law enforcement agencies.

“They [vigilantes] forget that the administration of law is conferred on the law enforcing agencies and no one is allowed to take the law into his own hands on the fancy of his shallow spirit of judgment. What the law provides may be taken away by lawful means; that is the fundamental concept of law. No one is entitled to shake the foundation,” the Chief Justice wrote. Any “external forces” who assume the role of protectors are criminals, the judgment observed.

At least 12 families rescued, many still feared trapped in Greater Noida twin building collapse

The NDRF is assisting the police and fire-fighters in the rescue operations

At least three bodies were recovered and three others have been rushed to a hospital after two buildings collapsed in Greater Noida’s Shahberi village on Tuesday night.

The rescue operations which began on Tuesday night continued on Wednesday morning as many people are feared trapped in the rubble.

A six-storey under-construction building collapsed on an adjacent building around 9.30 p.m on July 17. The second building also collapsed under the impact. The police have detained Ganga Prasad Dwivedi the builder and property dealer for questioning.

Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath on Tuesday night directed the police and administration departments to monitor and coordinate with the National Disaster Response Force (NDRF) involved in the rescue operations.

Drills are being used to remove metal rods to reach those trapped under the debris. A dog squad has also been pressed into service.

“Four teams of the NDRF and a dog squad are at the spot,” said Gautam Budh Nagar District Magistrate B.N. Singh.

“Exact casualties are yet to be ascertained as the rescue operation is on,” regional chief fire officer Arun Kumar Singh said.

A local said that at least 40 persons might be trapped inside the building. At least 12 families had shifted to one of the building, the local added.

Initial information suggests that the buildings were illegally constructed right under the nose of district administration and Greater Noida authority.
