7 Days HRDC Short Term Course Concludes at PU

            Seven days RUSA-MHRD Short Term Course/Faculty Development Program on the theme “Strategies for Enhancing  Gross Enrolment Ratio  in Higher Education Institutions” concluded, here today. Sh.Sanjay Tandon, President of BJP, Chandigarh and PU Fellow in his valedictory address, emphasized   on   the   amalgamation   of   education   and   value   system   to   take   the students on the right path. He stressed on the practicality of the Course theme and laid   stress   on   the   importance   of   introspection   and   inner   satisfaction   and   peace. Correlating with an incident, he emphasized on how we are getting evaluated and at what place.         

            Dr. Jagdish C. Mehta, Coordinator of the Course welcomed the Chief Guest and congratulated the participants on successful completion of the Course.

            Prof. S.K.Tomar, Honorary Director, Human Resource Development Centre emphasised the importance of these type of training courses for the skill and padagogical improvements among the faculty of  the higher learning institutions. 

            During the 7 days, participants were made aware about the role of various stakeholders that can play in enhancing the  Gross Enrolment Ratio  in Higher Education Institutions.

            Prof. N.S Mavi, Prof. Khushvinder Singh, Prof. Kuldeep Puri, Prof.S.P. Malhotra, Prof. Amit Kauts, Dr.   Jayanti   Dutta,   and Prof. Tulsi were some of the eminent resource persons of the said course.

2 Days Seminar commences at PU

National Seminar cum Workshop on Academic Integrity Plagiarism & Intellectual Property Rights is organised by Centre for Academic Leadership & Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Department of Chemistry and Institute of Forensic Science & Criminology, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

            Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his address enlightened the audience about the importance of Academic integrity in one’s life. He asked the faculty participants including Sciences and Social Sciences to protect their ideas/research by patenting it. He motivated the participants about interdisciplinary research collaborations in their fields. He congratulated the organizers and emphasized to conduct such program regularly.

            Prof. Ajeet Kaushik from Florida Polytechnic University, USA in his keynote  address on “Securing Yourself”, elaborated about how to secure your idea by patenting it. He told good patents can be written up by highlighting history of invention, publications, prior art search, economic/market impact or information, its social impact and identification of contribution (s). He has shared his own experiences of getting US patents.

Prof. Rajat Sandhir, PU in the academic session, discussed about the plagiarism and its consequences. He said USA has very strict rule and punishments for paper retraction but India needs to improve and India comes on 4th number for plagiarism and fabrication of data. He highlighted about the UGC policy about plagiarism.

Prof. Sushil Kansal elaborated upon predatory journals and its identifications. He stressed upon how to avoid from the trap of these predatory journals by prior identification. He talked about citations and impact factors of a journal.

Dr. Neeraj Kumar talked about the use of anti-plagiarism software’s in teaching and research.

 Prof. G.R. Chaudhary and Dr. Vishal Sharma, Programme Coordinators of this workshop highlighted the importance of Academic Integrity in today’s scenario.

Prof. Jatinder Grover, Coordinator, Centre for Academic Leadership and Educational Management (CALEM), PU, addressed the participants and introduced the theme of the two days’ workshop on Academic Integrity Plagiarism & Intellectual Property Rights and shared that CALEM has its top priority to conduct such programs.

Silver Jubilee Reunion of UBS Batch 1992-1994

            Silver Jubilee Reunion of UBS Batch 1992-1994 was held in the Auditorium of the Department of Evening Studies, Panjab University, Chandigarh. Anil Kumar, Executive Director, Shreyans Industries Limited was the Chief Guest. Mr Bhushan Goyal, Punjab Agro Juices Ltd; Mr Ajay Chagti, IAS, Secretary, Government of Delhi; Mr Lalit Prakash, Senior Vice President, HDFC Bank were Guest(s) of Honour. Professor Deepak Kapur, Chairperson-UBS delivered his address. The Chairperson-UBS along with UBS Faculty and UBS Alumni Relations Faculty presented mementos to the Batch of 1994. The event was followed by Lunch in the ground opposite Arts Block-3. In the afternoon, outdoor activities were organised in the UBS Lawns.

“Ignition-2019” Ignited

            Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, Panjab University, Chandigarh is organizing “Ignition-2019” on 18th-20th December 2019. The event started with the Sports Function organized in the University Grounds which was inaugurated by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice-Chancellor, in the presence of Dr. Parminder Singh, Director, Department of Sports, PU. 

PU VC in his address encouraged the students to actively participate in physical activities in addition to their routine clinical activities and studies.  A large number of events including team events like tug of war, basket-ball, volley ball and fun events like cycle race and lemon race were held.  The participants were from Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences as well as neighbouring places like G.M.C.H., Patiala and G.M.C.H, Chandigarh etc. enthusiastically participated in this programme. 

Sh. Raj Pal Singh, an Arjuna Awardee and former Indian National Hockey Team Captain, distributed the medals amongst the winners of various events during the prize distribution ceremony.    

Professor Sanjay Chhibber elected as President of SBRT

            Professor Sanjay Chhibber of the Department of Microbiology, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been elected as the President of the ‘Society for Bacteriophage Research and Therapy (SBRT)’ at the ongoing Annual Conference at Vellore Institute of Technology, Vellore from 12th to 13th December, 2019.  The theme of the International Conference is “Paradigm Shift in Antimicrobial Therapy-Antibiotics to Bacteriophages” and is being attended by Scientists from India and abroad.  The Conference is being supported by DST-SERB, DBT, CSIR, INSA, SFAM and other International agencies.

            Prof. Chhibber has done pioneering work on bacteriophage and its associated products like depolymerases and endolysins in treating bacterial infections using animal models.  The role of well characterized phages and associated proteins in the eradication of biofilms of klebsiella prenmoniae and methicillian resistant staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) has also been evaluated in his laboratory.  He has published more than 35 research papers on bacteriophages in national and international journals of repute. He has 5 patents and book chapters on bacteriophage to his credit.  He has been promoting the beneficial effects of bacteriophages not only in therapy but in other areas as well by delivering invited talks at different platforms in India.

Multilingual Mushaira at PU

            To enthrall tricity’s poetry lovers, a multilingual mushaira was organized at the Mulk Raj Anand Auditiorium at Panjab University by the North Zone Cultural Center, Patiala in collaboration with Panjab University Alumni Association and Department of Urdu, Panjab University, with the likes of Shams Tabrezi and Ana Dehelvi. While the former is a prolific Urdu poet-writer cum stage announcer, the latter is a veteran poetess of global reputation.

            The event began with Dr. Ali Abbas reiterating how mushaira is a dying art and needs to be rescued by its connoisseur’s and admirers.

            Also in attendance were Puran Singh Ahsan, a recognized Urdu poet of Punjab, Dr. Shyam Sakha Shayam, the former Director of Haryana Sahitya Akademi and an outstanding Hindi poet and writer, Naim Rashid, an expert in classical Urdu poetry, as well as B.D. Kalia Hamdam, an acclaimed poet and novelist.

            Gracing the occasion were Sarita Jain, a pioneer breaking new ground in Urdu ghazaland Hindi poetry, Subhash Sahil, a fecund Urdu-Hindi explorer poet of unexplored themes, Nalini Vibha Nazli, the only woman ghazal writer in Himachal Pradesh as well as Urmila Kaushik Sakhi, a brilliant actor-poet from Haryana.

            Leaving the audience in splits was Master Mahender from Haryana who amused everyone with his humorous poetry. Charming everyone with his exceptional poetry was Gurdip Gul, a classical poet of immense repute.

            Sh. Jatin Salwan, a lawyer-environmentalist who draws inspiration from Shiv Kumar Batalavi and is a prolific poet himself, recited Poems in Punjabi and Urdu.

            Ms.  Rani Balbir Kaur, Professor Emeritus, Department of Indian Theatre and a theater thespian was also present on the occasion.

            Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations honored the versatile poets with tokens of appreciation and gratitude for enchanting the audience with their oratorical skills.

“ICONICA 2020 Website Launched”

Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, today launched the interactive website (www.iconica2020.in) for the upcoming International and Interdisciplinary Conference, “ICONICA 2020”.

This interdisciplinary Conference is scheduled to be held on February 12-14, 2020, on the theme of “NEXT-GEN PARADIGMS IN HEALTHCARE”, under the aegis of Panjab University, Chandigarh. Besides the Conference Chair, Professor Bhupinder Singh Bhoop, Coordinator, UGC Centre of Excellence in Nano Biomedical Applications, Organizing Secretaries of ICONICA 2020, Professor Kanwaljit Chopra, University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences and Dr. Jagat Bhushan, Dr. Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences & Hospital, the event was also graced by the presence of Professor Shankarji Jha, Dean University Instructions, Professor Prof R K Singla, Dean Research and several other members of the Organizing Committee of ICONICA 2020.

PU VC while congratulating the team for the conference, urged them to reach out to all sectors including Government Machinery for participation in the said conference. He also added that this is the beginning and PU plans to make this event an annual one spreading it to other branches of PU

Taking baton forward from the synergy of previous years’ prestigious international conferences (i.e., NanoSciTech 2012, NanoSciTech 2014, NanoSciTech 2016 and NanoSciTech 2017), the aim of ICONICA 2020 is to bring together the International community working in different domains of health care, and to provide a conducive milieu for presenting advancements and applications in the area of biomedical sciences.

Nearly a dozen of renowned scientists have already confirmed their presence & participation, with nearly half of them hailing from countries like USA, UK, Ireland, Korea, and Dubai. As witnessed during previous years’ conferences, more than 800 delegates from across the country and globe are anticipated to participate in the deliberations.

The Conference events will encompass plenary lectures, keynote talks, oral presentations and poster sessions, all demonstrating novel, effectual and cost‐effectual research outcomes, and the rich information pertaining to  diverse aspects of research in health care domains. 12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition

            Horticulture Division of Panjab University will be organizing 12th Chrysanthemum Exhibition at Prof. R.C. Paul Rose Garden, PU from 10-15 December, 2019. Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, PU will inaugurate the exhibition on 10.12.2019 at 2:00 p.m.. Prof. Shankarji Jha, Dean of University Instruction will preside over the function and Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar will be the Guest of Honour.

Prof. R.C. Paul Rose Garden has been given new look this year for the Exhibition. The garden will be adorned with about 150 varieties of Chrysanthemum. Seven new varieties namely Sonali, Sapna, Mushtak, Parveen, Mahatma, Dorris, Freshman, Alfred are  displayed this year which have been procured from places like Calcutta and Solan. About 4200 pots of Chrysanthemum will enhance the beauty of the garden.  The plants have been grown by the Horticulture Division itself in its nursery to get the best results. The Horticulture Division has also invited the Employees, Residents, Departments, Hostels etc. to show their Chrysanthemum in 12th Panjab University Chrysanthemum Exhibition.

Such exhibitions have been organized regularly by the Horticulture Division in the past and have been huge crowd puller. These exhibitions are an opportunity to display the best products of Horticulture Division and also give a message for clean & green environment, keeping up with the motto of ‘Swachh Bharat’ being promoted by the Panjab University, Chandigarh.

Er. Anil Thakur, Divisional Engineer (Hort.) said that the Horticulture Division is trying its best to make the exhibition more attractive than the previous years and has been preparing for the same with his team for many months.

Discussion on dyslexia at PU

The third day of 21days’ National Program on Assessment and Management of Children with Learning Disabilities from 2nd to 22nd December 2019, organised by Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh was initiated by Prof Raj K. Gupta (Program Coordinator).

In the first technical session, Ms.ApoorvaPanshikar from SNDT Women’s University, Mumbai informed the participants about meaning, signs and symptoms of Dyslexia. She explained about the areas of assessment in the second session. She stressed that parents often find it hard to accept that there is a real problem and hence most of the times they misinterpret the situation. In the subsequent session, she threw light on the varied tools use to diagnose children with dyslexia.

One week Short-term Course on Research Methodology by UIAMS Concluded

            University Institute of Applied Management Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh concluded One week Short term course(STC) on Research Methodology. The primary focus of this course was to provide research stimulus to the academicians and researchers and to bring clarity to various statistical concepts, tools and techniques.

            The eminent experts from IIM Lucknow, Thapar University, GGSIPU Delhi, PEC Chandigarh and Panjab University gave theoretical as well as practical exposure of various statistical techniques using softwares like SPSS, EVIEWS, SMART PLS, STRATA and DEAP.

            Dr. Nishi Sharma presented the course report and Prof. Upasna Joshi welcomed the dignitaries.

            Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh during his valedictory address emphasised that STC provides platform for understanding student’s perception, skill advancement and research collaboration. He encouraged the researchers to conduct socially relevant studies.

            Prof. Keshav Malhotra, Dean Faculty of Business Management and Commerce highlighted the need of identifying and defining the research problem in an appropriate manner.

            Ms. Rachita Sambyal thanked the UIAMS fraternity and dignitaries for their enormous cooperation in the organisation of the event.

            35 faculty members and research scholars from Ambala, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Ludhiana and Patiala participated in the programme.
