Panjab University in association with Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal, Punjab And Red Cross Society, Punjab, on the eve of World Red Cross day organised a virtual awareness lecture under the title “ Role of Civil Society in fight against Pandemic”.
Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor of P.U. in his address said that Civil Society is the most effective cooperative unit to fight against adversaries. He further added that Man has become the most formidable and fit creature on the earth, due to its acumen and agility to evolve the civilised societies. Man has learned the relevance of mutual cooperation, complementarity and harmony to tackle most of the challenges faced by living creatures.
Sh. Avinash Rai Khanna, renowned thinker and social worker, related the obligations and role of a actual civilised society with formation and working of Indian Red Cross Society. Sh. Khanna urged every youth and capable member of Indian civil society to come forward with dedication to discharge their “ manav dharma” and “ samaj dhrama” holding it be most sacrosanct facet of Idea of justice propagated by Indian Civilisation. Sh. Khanna advised educational institutions to aware the youth to donate blood before being vaccinated, help lonely senior citizens whose children are serving away from home as army personnel or front line fighters and institutions should prepare consultation panels of medical students to aware the needy.
Dr. Umashankar Pachauri, All Indian General Secretary of Bhartiya Shikshan Mandal, quoted some anecdotes and stories from ancient Indian history, where to tackle the pandemic and adversaries every affluent member of Indian Society distribute all their earning among society at large and especially for marginalised sections. Dr Pachauri appealed to the audience to make everyone aware that one should restraint from being self centric by collecting medicine like Remidesivir for future, when other needy patients are suffering due to its urgent need.

Equal Opportunity Cell for Persons with Disability, Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with Social Substance organized a WEBINAR on “Life of a person with disability: Social and Professional Opportunities” by Ms Sukhdev Kaur Saini, Child Development Project officer cum Protection Officer, Chandigarh, today.
Ms Sukhdev Kaur Saini, an Alumni of PU sensitized the participants by sharing her Inspirational life journey. She covered the different Government schemes and programs directly aimed for the upliftment, rehabilitation and empowerment of persons with disabilities. She discussed in detail the different services extended by her Social Welfare department like Petrol and diesel subsidy to disabled persons ( 40 litre), assistance to Handicapped persons for purchase of aids and appliances, unemployment allowance to disabled persons, disbursement of Loan to persons with disabilities, etc.
Professor Raj Kumar,Vice Chancellor in his address urged everyone to encourage and accept differently abled persons who are no less than any of us. He further added that for a better future, we must try to mitigate the discriminating culture and promote disability awareness through platforms, such as this webinar, for each and every individual, so that the foundation of empathy gets stronger and helps in breaking social barriers.

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University Chandigarh successfully celebrated the virtual weeklong celebrations on the occasion of “Save Earth Week” which concluded today.
Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Chairperson, UIPS briefed the audience about the theme- “Restore our Earth” and shared about the largest online mass mobilisation in history on 50th anniversary (2020) of World Earth Day.
The Chief Guest of the occasion, Professor Karan Vasisht, Former Chairperson, UIPS inaugurated the Eco club and the official Facebook page of UIPS Eco-club- “Environmental Warriors of UIPS”. He enlightened about the five initiatives of ‘World Earth Day’ reiterating, every little change would guarantee a healthy Earth for the future generations. Further conduct of quarterly activities for the Eco-club was proposed.
Dr Ranjana Bhandari initiated and conducted all the activities planned during the week. 22nd April was celebrated as “Each one plant one” Sapling Plantation Drive led by Professor Karan Vasisht. 23rd April observed Awareness campaign on “Say no to plastics”-Adopt alternatives”. 24th April laid focus on Making bird feeders and birdhouses to bring sparrows back. 25th April commemorated “Save fuel-walk to work or cycle”. 26th April celebrated “Best out of waste campaign”. A webinar was organised on 27th April as an awareness campaign on “Green Entrepreneurship” and to mark the valedictory celebrations.
Dr Vanita Prasad, Founder Director and CTO- REVY Environmental Solutions delivered a talk on “Green Ways of Managing Waste”. She stressed on the need to rethink about waste management during COVID 19 and its impacts. She shared different green ways for waste management like anaerobic digestion.
Professor Vivek Ranjan Sinha, Dean of University Instruction, Panjab University was the Chief Guest for the occasion. The webinar ended with a vote of thanks by Professor Indu Pal Kaur. The concluding day today observed the “Save Water Campaign”.

University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, (UIFT & VD), Panjab University, Chandigarh, organized a webinar titled “Sewing Threads: Technicalities in Selection and Usage on Fashion Products” ,today.
Mr Uday Narayan Bammanwadi, Technical Service Manager with M/s. Guetermann India Private Limited, Gurgaon in his address, talked about the sewing threads – how these are manufactured, what are the types of sewing threads used in the apparel and textile industry and technicalities related to sewing and sewing threads. He differentiated between the spun and core spun sewing threads and elaborated Micro Core Technology (MCT) in thread manufacturing. There are various types of raw material or fibers used in manufacturing of yarn. He also illustrated how PET bottles are recycled to prepare sewing yarn contributing towards sustainable practices.
Puckering is a very common problem encountered during stitching operations on the production floor. He discussed various kinds of Puckering and technical reasons for the problem and showed samples of how correct selection of needle and yarn can lead to no pucker situation. Adjusting feed dog for pucker free situation was also demonstrated.
Ticket number or yarn thickness and its selection for different fabrics were discussed at length. While stitching, a needle thread is continuously under pressure and has friction with the needle hole and the fabric. Needle temperature is also raised while high speed sewing and lubrication of sewing thread protect it from these extreme temperatures. Lubrication of thread can be during the dyeing stage or it can be done once the thread is manufactured. Mr Uday stressed that dyebath lubrication is better and lend the yarn with such qualities that thread remains intact and can withstand so many pressures and abrasions.
Earlier, Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson of UIFT & VD welcomed and introduced the key speaker who has more than 26 years of technical experience in the field of Apparel and sewing technology. She said that
correct choice of sewing thread is very important as the selection of needle and thread can immensely reduce the rejects in a garment factory .
Around 100 participants including Research scholars, students of Fashion Technology and faculty members from various colleges within and outside the city attended the webinar.
The speaker answered queries of lot of students like sewing on stretchable fabrics, how GSM of fabric is related to the selection of sewing thread, the needle and machine etc. Overall, the webinar was very interesting and informative for the researchers and students who will be joining industry in future.

Dr. Jagat Bhushan said that tree plantation is very important step for the community, especially in the testing times of COVID19 and this initiative will go a long way in inculcating awareness about environment amongst students, faculty and staff.
Over 150 saplings of Neem and Gulmohar trees and Sangunya, schefflera, fern and euphorbia plants were planted in the entire premises of alumni house.
Everyone took a pledge to take care of the plants and to make the environs beautiful and green.

The programme is uniquely designed by integrating the knowledge of the ancient Indian philosophical wisdom of Yoga with Heart centric approach of meditation.
In the series of online session, the 18th session was held on 4th April, on Soft Skills Development by using the approach of Self Exploration by guest speaker Ms. Rikita Swaroop, Master Trainer for MEPSC –National skills Development Corporation India from Ranchi, Jharkhand. She used Mentimeter to reach out to participants while making them think by asking probing existential questions for which they were forced to peep within to find answers. This was followed by anecdotes and sharing of lived experiences. The dilemmas which we face in our day to day living were highlighted beautifully by her. Values need to be discussed through jurisprudence and clarification approach was the message she gave to teachers. Teachers themselves have to practice those virtues about which they talk about in their class room.
Earlier, the session began with yogic technique of body relaxation followed by discussions on how a simple meditation practice can not only relieve the heaviness of the mind but takes on to create a new version of yourself, full of unlimited potential and excellence.
The programme was coordinated By Prof. Latika Sharma and Prof O. P. Katare. The event witnessed an audience of over 100 enthusiastic participants including faculty and students from across the country.
The talk concluded by reminiscing the beauty of the spring flower which begins again, the day you begin is a journey in its own. Overall, the session had a magical effect opening a new dimension and perspective in order to transform the personality.

University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh is proud of Mr. Subhash Kumar, who completed the Master of Commerce programme of Panjab University with distinction in 1983, for having assumed the additional charge of the Chairman and Managing Director of Oil and Natural Gas Corporation(ONGC) today, shared Prof. V.R. Sinha, Dean of University Instructions, PU and Chairman, UBS. He also expressed that it is a moment of pride for PU also.
Mr. Kumar is Director (Finance) of ONGC, one of the Global 500 companies, since January 2018. Previously, he had a brief stint as Director (Finance) at Petronet LNG Ltd, a role he took up in August 2017.
Mr Kumar joined ONGC in 1985 as Finance & Accounts Officer (F&AO). After initially working in Jammu and Dehradun, he had a long stint at ONGC Videsh, the overseas arm of ONGC. During his tenure with ONGC Videsh, Mr Kumar was associated with key acquisitions and expansion of company’s footprint from single asset company in 2001 into a company with global presence in 17 countries with 37 assets. He played a key role in evaluation and acquisition of many Assets abroad by ONGC Videsh.
He worked as Head Business Development, Finance & Budget and also as Head Treasury Planning & Portfolio Management Group at ONGC Videsh from April 2010 to March 2015. He then went on to serve as Chief Financial Officer of Mansarovar Energy Colombia Limited, a 50:50 joint venture of ONGC Videsh and Sinopec of China, from September 2006 to March 2010.
Mr Kumar joined back ONGC as Chief Commercial & Head Treasury of ONGC in July, 2016 where he played a key role in evaluation, negotiation, and concluding outstanding issues pertaining to the organization.

दिल्ली यूनिवर्सिटी में नए सिलेबस के ड्राफ्ट में 20 से 30 फीसदी तक बदलाव किया गया है। इतिहास (ऑनर्स) के पहले पेपर ‘Idea of Bharat’ पढ़ाया जाएगा। ड्राफ्ट सिलेबस के तीसरे पेपर में सरस्वती-सिंधु सभ्यता को पढ़ाया जाएगा। वेदों में सरस्वती नदी का विस्तार से उल्लेख मिलता है। ‘भारत की सांस्कृतिक विरासत’ नाम से 12वां पेपर है। रामायण और महाभारत जैसे सांस्कृतिक विरासत का विषय शामिल हुआ। इस्लामिक शासकों के आगे आक्रमणकारी शब्द जोड़ने पर विवाद है। नए पाठ्यक्रम में आक्रमण शब्द का इस्तेमाल मुस्लिम शासकों जैसे बाबर के संबंध में किया गया है। भारत की सांस्कृतिक विरासत पढ़ किसकी बौखलाहट बढ़ी?

गुरु नानकदेव जी ने बाबर के आक्रमण और लोगों की दुर्दशा के समय भारत की तबाही का आँखों देखा उल्लेख किया और युद्ध की स्थिति का वर्णन किया:
अर्थात हे लालों, बाबर पाप की बारात ले कर काबुल से मार आत मचाता हुआ आया है और धिंगाजोरी से भारत को दहेज के रूप में मांग रहा है। शर्म और धर्म दोनों ही अलोप हो चुके हैं, अब झूठ की प्रधनगी है। क़ज़ियों और ब्राह्मणों के काम धंधे सब चौपट हो चुके हैं अब विवाह जैसी पवित्र रसम भी शैतान ही करवा रहा है।
गुरु जी के शब्दों में बाबर एक आक्रांता है बाबर की दरिंदगी का वर्णन गुरु जी ने अपनी कोमल वाणी में अत्यंत दुखी हो कर किया है। विश्वविद्यालय अनुदान आयोग (UGC) एक सांविधिक इकाई है, जो विश्वविद्यालयों में उच्च शिक्षा से संबंधित सभी प्रकार के कार्यकलापों की एक जिम्मेदार संस्था है। यूजीसी ने हाल ही में बीए इतिहास के पाठ्यक्रम का एक ड्राफ्ट प्रकाशित किया, जो भारतीय इतिहास के सभी पहलुओं पर प्रकाश डालता है। यूजीसी के इसी प्रयास के कारण कई बुद्धिजीवी और नेता व्यथित हैं, जिनमें असदुद्दीन ओवैसी प्रमुख रूप से सम्मिलित हैं।
दि आइडिया ऑफ भारत
बीए इतिहास का पहला पेपर “आइडिया ऑफ भारत” पर आधारित है। यह भारतवर्ष की अवधारणा, भारतीय ज्ञान परंपरा, कला एवं साहित्य, धर्म, विज्ञान, जैन एवं बौद्ध साहित्य, भारतीय आर्थिक परंपरा एवं ऐसे ही अन्य टॉपिक्स को कवर करता है। इनमें वेद, उपनिषद, महान ग्रंथ, जैन एवं बौद्ध साहित्य, वसुधैव कुटुंबकम की अवधारणा, भारतीय अंक पद्धति एवं गणित, समुद्री व्यापार इत्यादि सम्मिलित है।
ड्राफ्ट में बताया गया है कि इस पाठ्यक्रम के माध्यम से छात्र प्राचीन भारत के नागरिकों के प्रारम्भिक जीवन और संस्कृति से परिचित होंगे एवं उस समाज की व्यवस्था, धर्म पद्धति एवं राजनैतिक इतिहास को जान सकेंगे। इस पाठ्यक्रम का एक उद्देश्य यह भी है कि छात्र भारत में लगातार हुए सामाजिक एवं सांस्कृतिक परिवर्तनों का भी अध्ययन कर सकें।
सिंधु-सरस्वती सभ्यता की व्याख्या
इस स्नातक कोर्स का तीसरा पेपर प्राचीन भारत के इतिहास लेखन एवं ऐतिहासिक स्रोतों की व्याख्या से संबंधित है। इसमें वैदिक काल, जैन और बौद्ध धर्म के उदय से संबंधित कई विषय हैं। इस खंड की सबसे महत्वपूर्ण बात है कि इसमें सिंधु-सरस्वती सभ्यता के अस्तित्व से संबंधित सभी पहलुओं की व्याख्या की गई है। साथ ही हिंदुओं में भेद उत्पन्न करने के लिए प्रचलित की गई आर्य आक्रमण की थ्योरी को भी नकारा गया है।
आक्रांता अब आक्रांता ही कहा जाएगा
अभी तक स्नातक कार्यक्रमों की इतिहास की पुस्तकों में बाबर और तैमूरलंग जैसे आक्रमणकारियों के लिए आक्रांता अथवा आक्रमणकारी जैसे शब्द नहीं लिखे जाते थे किन्तु UGC ने इस ड्राफ्ट में इसे स्वीकार किया है।
बुद्धिजीवियों और नेताओं का विरोध
हालाँकि जब भी इतिहास में किसी भी प्रकार के सुधार की बात आती है तो कुछ राजनैतिक नेताओं और स्वघोषित बुद्धिजीवियों को यह सुधार आरएसएस का षड्यंत्र ही दिखाई देता है। वामपंथी पोर्टल टेलीग्राफ ने कुछ शिक्षकों और विद्यार्थियों का वक्तव्य छापा है कि वैदिक और हिन्दू धार्मिक ग्रंथों का उपयोग करके शिक्षा का भगवाकरण किया जा रहा है। इन “शिक्षकों और विद्यार्थियों” ने यह भी चिंता व्यक्त की है कि “आइडिया ऑफ भारत” पर आधारित ने पाठ्यक्रम से “मुस्लिम शासनकाल की महत्ता” समाप्त हो जाएगी।
टेलीग्राफ ने दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के सेंट स्टीफंस कॉलेज के एक अनजान विद्यार्थी का कथन छापा कि वह “आइडिया ऑफ भारत” के माध्यम से प्राचीन भारतीय सभ्यता के महिमामंडन से व्यथित है। दिल्ली विश्वविद्यालय के ही श्यामलाल कॉलेज के असिस्टेंट प्रोफेसर जीतेंद्र मीणा जी भी व्यथित हैं कि नया पाठ्यक्रम सेक्युलर साहित्य के स्थान पर धार्मिक साहित्य का महिमामंडन करता है एवं मुगल इतिहास को दरकिनार कर देता है।
ऐसे मुद्दों पर ओवैसी कुछ न कहें, यह असंभव है। उन्होंने सीधे भाजपा पर यह आरोप लगा दिया कि भाजपा अपनी हिन्दुत्व की विचारधारा को पाठ्यक्रम में सम्मिलित करने का कार्य कर रही है। ओवैसी ने एक ट्वीट में कहा कि शिक्षा प्रोपेगंडा नहीं है। भाजपा हिन्दुत्व की विचारधारा को पाठ्यपुस्तकों में शामिल कर रही है। माईथोलॉजी को स्नातक कार्यक्रमों में नहीं पढ़ाना चाहिए। ओवैसी ने ड्राफ्ट पर प्रश्न उठाते हुए कहा कि पाठ्यक्रम मुस्लिम इतिहास को मलीन कर रहा है।
