Eye Donation Awareness Programme at BH-3, PU

            The Boys Hostel No. 3, Panjab University Chandigarh in collaboration with Eye Bank, Ophthalmology Department, Govt. Medical College and Hospital, Sector 32, Chandigarh organized an Eye Donation Awareness Program on the occasion of 36th National Eye Donation Fortnight.

            Dr. Sudesh Kumar Arya, Prof. and Eye Bank Incharge, GMCH-32 delivered a lecture elaborating the aims and objectives of such awareness programs to aware public about the need and importance of eye donations and to motivate people to pledge their eyes for donation after death and serve humanity even after one is not present physically.  By donating eyes after death, a corneal blind person can be able to see through a surgical procedure, wherein the damaged cornea is replaced by a healthy cornea from an eye donor. He sensitized the audience about the thresholds of blindness in India and how certain myths and superstitions act as barriers in Eye Donation and informed that Sri Lanka (a small country vis a vis India) exports corneas to other countries. He urged people to abandon their religious myths and should come forward for eye donations.Dr. Sudesh Arya responded to all the queries of audiences and two hostel residents having visual impairment participated and interacted with the speaker. Prof. Arya informed that anyone from the general public can contact GMCH Eye Bank Helpline Number 9814821212, for any queries related to eye donation and cornea transplantation.

            Prof. S. K Tomar, Dean Student Welfare highlighted the importance of eye donation to provide the life of light to blind people and appeal the masses to come forward for this noble cause to serve humanity.

            The warden of hostel, Dr. J.S. Sehrawat, explained the importance of such awareness programs and appreciated the initiatives and efforts of Eye Bank. Dr. Sehrawat promised to contribute in this humanitarian cause by extending all sorts of support from Panjab University, Chandigarh and requested the participants to pledge for eye donation.

Salwan, has been awarded India Inspirational Women Award for Excellence in Public Relations during a virtual ceremony held on 20th August, 2021 in the presence of Dr. Kiran Bedi, IPS(Retd.), Former Lt. Governor of Puducherry as Chief Guest. The Memento and Citation were received on 30th August, 2021. Ms. Salwan has more than 35 years of professional experience in Public Relations and specialises in strategic communication and image building. She is North Zone Chairperson of Public Relations Council of India with Pan India presence.

“SEED Fund” for selecting Startups launched at BioNEST-Panjab University

The BioNEST-Panjab University has received a special funding from BIRAC – the “SEED Fund” (Sustainable Entrepreneurship and Enterprise Development Fund) which was launched today with an advertisement (www.bionest.puchd.ac.in) for selecting registered Life Science Start ups with innovative ideas having a potential for commercialization. Financial assistance in the form of equity investment up to 30 lakhs can be funded per start-up for a period of 2 years along with incubation support. Notably, the BioNEST-PU is one of the youngest bioincubators in India, and is the only university-backed bioincubator in the North India to have received this type of investment support for young startups.

Seed Fund investments are regarded as a critical support component in a strategic investment plan to help start-ups grow. The SEED Fund by BIRAC has been launched with an agenda to provide assistance to the incubators funded by them.Through the SEED Fund, startups with new and innovative ideas and technologies will be supported with capital assistance through the bioincubator. For an incubator set-up like the BioNEST-PU, the SEED Fund would be a source to bridge the gap between the early stages of a student start-up and its potential market. The qualifying start-ups will further be supported to obtain funding from resources like angel funders, venture capitalists or commercial banks/financial institutions.

Dr.Rohit Sharma, the Project Leader of BioNEST said, “The incubator has to hand-pick some start-ups for equity or operational funding under the SEED Fund. BioNEST-PU will thus be supporting multiple startups through the medium of this funding.” Dr. Sharma also highlighted that the types of startups to be supported by the SEED Fund will primarily be focused on the pre-defined thrust areas of the incubator that include- bioprocess technology, biopharmaceuticals, medical devices and food and agriculture biotechnology. The funding decision at BioNEST-PU shall primarily be based on the evaluation of the Business Plan of the start-up and its implementation. The SEED Fund will prove to be one of its kind support system for start-ups to be made stand-alone entities in the actual market.

As a key step in empowering and nurturing young biotech entrepreneurs in the northern region of the country, the BioNEST-PU was established in the year 2017. Since its inception, the BioNEST-PU till date has been successful in having more than 20 Innovators on-board as resident startups and/or entrepreneurs.

University Dental Institute Stands Tall Amongst Dental Colleges In India

Admission to Ph.D. Programme 2021

University Business School, Panjab University Chandigarh, invites applications for admission to Ph.D. programme from those candidates who have qualified the UGC (NET) /JRF/ SLET examination with Fellowship/Scholarship. The candidates are advised to download the application form from UBS website, for admission to Ph.D. programme for academic session 2021-2022 and fill the details in Google form as well.

Those candidates who have already qualified the Panjab University Ph.D. Entrance Test 2019 and 2020 (for admission to the Ph.D. program in Management at the University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh) are advised to download the application form from UBS website, for admission to Ph.D. programme for the academic session 2021-2022 and fill the details in Google form as well.

Candidates are required to submit the hard copy of duly filled application form with annexure(s) (wherever required) in the UBS office latest by 24.09.2021 (4:00 P.M.).

(Note: The form will not be entertained after due date).

       All those candidates who have applied for the Panjab University Ph.D. Entrance Test -2021 (for admission to the Ph.D. program in Management at the University Business School, Panjab University, Chandigarh), for academic session 2021-2022 are required to fill the application form after declaration of Result of Ph.D. Entrance Test-2021. PU-CET (U.G.)-2021 and PU-M.Phil./Ph.D. Entrance Test-2021 date re-scheduled

This is for the information of the candidates in particular and public in general that the Panjab University had decided to re-schedule the PU-CET (U.G.)-2021 and PU-M.Phil./Ph.D. Entrance Test-2021 on 19th September 2021 and 3rd October 2021 instead of 5th September 2021 and 19th September 2021 respectively. The websites will be reopened / extended for the fresh candidates as well as for those who have not completed their form on time. Detailed schedule is available on the concerned websites.

UIPS, Panjab University inaugurated 5thIBRO-APRC Associate School on the theme “Neuropsychaitric and Neurodegenerative Diseases”

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences, Panjab University successfully inaugurated the five day long 5th IBRO-APRC Associate School today with the theme “Neuropsychiatric and Neurodegenerative Diseases”. Around 45 participants from Asia Pacific Region are selected for this Associate School by the International Brain Research Organization (IBRO).International Brain Research Organisation is the global association of neuroscience societies that promotes and supports neuroscience training, education and collaborative research around the globe.

 The inauguration was preceded by a pre-inaugural lecture by Professor Anthony J Hannan, NHMRC Principal Research Fellow Florey Institute of Neuroscience and Mental Health University of Melbourne on the topic”Gene-environment interactions informing therapeutic approaches for cognitive and affective disorders”. Professor Anil Dattatraya Sahasrabudhe, current Chairman of All India Council for Technical Education (AICTE) attended the Pre-inaugural Lecture.

Professor Indu Pal Kaur, Organising Chair and Chairperson UIPS extended a cordial welcome to the audience and shared the rich heritage and culture of the Institute along with its achievements. Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor Panjab University, presided over the event. He inspired the young budding neuroscientists by sharing his holistic perspective towards this domain and emphasized on the collaborative approach. Dr Anurag Kuhad,Organizing Secretary gave an overview of the 5th IBRO Associate Chandigarh Neuroscience School.

Professor Anil Kumar, Professor of Pharmacology and Former Dean, Faculty of Pharmaceutical Sciences introduced the Chief Guest of the occasion Professor Y. K. Gupta, Director, Principal Advisor, India Strategy Development-GARDP, DNDI & President AIIMS Bhopal & Jammu.

Professor Gupta apprised the audience about the legacy of Neuroscience in India which is still continuing to attain new heights being greatly recognized by Government of India and other national and international bodies. He gave an explicit overview of the etiology, complex interplay of neurotransmitters involved in neuropsychiatric and neurodegenerative diseases. He talked about gene involvement in Alzheimer’s disease, Parkinson and so much more. At the end he urged the participants to open up their minds to think beyond, in order to unravel molecular mechanisms.

Chair, IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) Dr. Pike See Cheah from Malaysia educated the audience about the mission, core values, opportunities and grants offered by IBRO-APRC.

The event concluded with a vote of thanks by Professor Indu Pal Kaur and Professor Kanwaljit Chopra. More than 150 participants including national and international dignitaries, faculty colleagues and students joined the event.

Right to Information Discussed at Police Administration, PU

The Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University, Chandigarh organized a special lecture on “Right to Information: Citizen Police Interface”, to celebrate and commemorate 75 years of Independence of India, by Mrs. Urvashi Gulati, IAS (Retd.) former Chief Secretary and Chief Information Commissioner, Haryana. 

Mrs. Urvashi Gulati, termed RTI Act as a revolutionary legislation and has made the governance system participatory. While highlighting the benefits of the RTI, Act the speaker said that the strength of this legislation is low cost and simple procedure. It covers almost all the categories of Public departments/Government departments including Judiciary, RBI and Police. She observed that citizens often approach police for accessing information about their complaints, status of investigation, substance of case diaries etc. Police can deny providing the information on the ground that it may endanger the life of the people. Further, police can also deny providing personal information under sec. 8(1) (j) to protect the privacy of the police officer. Information can also be denied under sec 8(1) (h) where provision of information impedes the process of investigation and prosecution of offender. However, the speaker emphasised that ‘onus of showing that it will impede the investigation or there is such apprehension lies with the police officer’.  

Earlier, the Chairperson of the Centre Professor Anil Monga welcomed the Speaker and said that Right to Information Act, 2005 is a landmark legislation which has not only empowered the common man but has also ushered in an era of transparency and accountability in the Governance system of India. 

The lecture was attended by Prof.Pawan Kamra, Prof.Ameer Sultana, Prof.Swarnjit Kaur, Prof.Monica Munjial, Dr.Kuldeep Singh, Dr.Gaurav Gaur, Dr.Bhawna Gupta, Dr.Jagdish Rai, Dr.Deepak Sharma, Dr.Namit Kumar, Deputy Registrar (RTI) PU, Research Scholars and Students of Centre for Police Administration. Musical Concert by Department of Music, PU

            The Department of Music, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised an online Musical Concert “Thumri Utsav” today. to celebrate “Azadi ka Amrit Mahotsav” on the occasion of 75th Anniversary of India’s Independence.

            Pandit Ganesh Parshad Mishra, son and disciple of Pandit Mahadev Prasad Mishra (Thumri Samrat) of Banaras Gharana, known for his Thumri style of singing enriched the event by his gracious presence in the Musical Concert.

            Professor Neelam Paul, Chairperson of the department convened the concert with Dr. Rai Bahadur Singh, Assistant Professor, Guest Faculty who coordinated the Musical Concert through virtual mode successfully.  Many students participated in the concert very enthusiastically.  

Virtual Lecture at Department of Zoology

The Department of Zoology, Panjab University Chandigarh today hosted second Virtual Distinguished lectures under the aegis of Indian Sciences Congress Association and Zoological Society of India in collaboration with Chandigarh forum for sciences and technology communication.  The session was attended by more than 100 participants.

The session was chaired by Prof. R. C. Sobti former Vice-Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh, and Babasaheb Bhimrao Ambedkar Central University, Lucknow. Dr. Harpreet Kaur, Chairperson of Department of Zoology welcomed the distinguished guests and eminent speakers. The first distinguished lecture entitled “Introduction to proteomics and application of biomarker discovery” was delivered by Dr. A. K. Mohanty, Joint Director,
IVRI Campus Mukteswar.He discussed proteomics studies and the application of proteomics in various animal research. He stressed upon the differential protein expression and two major techniques to identify proteins i.e., MALDI TOF-TOF and LC-MS-MS. Further, he also highlighted the high throughput protein studies, mammalian epithelial cell and protein related to milk production and lactating protein.

The second lecture entitled “Cloning of India’s black gold, buffalo. Waiting at a lab to reach farmer farm” was delivered byDr. Naresh L. Selokar, ScientistAnimal Biotechnology Center, ICAR-NDRI Karnal. He discussed animal cloning, importance of buffalo in farms and artificial insemination. He showed a detail video presentation of various steps of cloning method. He emphasized on the breeding and restoring of dead valuable bulls and superior buffalo bull through genotyping. He provided an insight into the transgenic clone embryos and Crisper CAS9 gene editing in farm animals. He concluded that buffalo cloning is a valuable breeding tool to compliment the artificial insemination to improve India’s buffalo germplasm.
