Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor in the presence of Prof. Jagtar Singh, Dean Student Welfare (DSW) and Prof. Meena Sharma DSW (W) released the video of Hostel No. 8 (Florence Nightingale hall) made by Warden Dr Simran Kaur.

 Simran Kaur, Warden welcomed all the girls back to the hostel and introduces the amenities of the girls hostel to the new residents, Prof Meena Sharma emphasised that the main purpose of video is to highlight the amenities to the Hostel residents, the hostel is equipped with spacious rooms, hygienic mess, beautiful parks for walk, reading room, gym, common room etc. The motive of the video is to introduce the new students about the benefits of the hostel and welcome the old students back, it is a perfect pocket friendly accommodation for the University students and provides the students with all the necessary facilities of day to day life. The initiative taken by Dr Simran Kaur is motivated by Prof. Meena Sharma to encourage the new comers to the hostel life where they have the most secure and healthy environment to study and live the best of their university lifes.

PU Professor appointed Associate Editor of a reputed Public Health journal

This is a matter of great pride for Panjab University that Dr. Kewal Krishan, Professor and former Chair of the Department of Anthropology has been appointed as a permanent Associate Editor of an international and reputed journal “Frontiers in Public Health”. He has been offered this position on the basis of his commendable work on the interface of Anthropology and Public health. The “Frontiers in Public Health” is one of the highly rated journals with an impact factor of 3.709. ‘Frontiers’ is the 3rd most-cited publisher amongst the 20 top publishers of the scientific literature.

Apart from his expertise in forensic science, Prof. Krishan is regularly contributing articles on various aspects of anthropology and public health including COVID-19. Since the commencement of the COVID-19 pandemic, he has contributed many articles on COVID-19 exploring his anthropological and forensic knowledge. Looking at his contributions to these aspects of COVID-19, two international reputed journals “The Journal of Infection in Developing Countries” and “Acta Biomedica” have also appointed him as editorial board member in 2021. He is already on the editorial panel of highly rated forensic journals such as “Forensic Science International” and “Medicine Science and the law”.

Prof. Krishan is a renowned forensic anthropologist and one of the most cited researchers in the field of Anthropology and forensic science worldwide. He has published more than 275 articles, most of which are in international journals of repute. He has more than 25000 citations of the research work to his credit. Dr. Krishan endorsed “this is due to the constant encouragement and motivation by our worthy Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar for international research collaboration”.

LECTURE SERIES AT UIFT & VD

The lecture series ‘Learn the ropes with alumni’ was held today at University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development(UIFT&VD) Panjab University Chandigarh  with Ms. Shiba Sethi. She completed her post-graduate studies at University Institute of Fashion Technology & Vocational Development, Panjab University and started her business in 2013. Dr. Anu H. Gupta, Chairperson UIFT & VD, welcomed MS. Shiba and commended her on her achievements and embroidered artworks.

Ms. Shiba recounted her learning and experimentation experiences while she was a student at UIFT. She emphasized the need of taking risks and stepping outside one’s comfort zone to gain more exposure. She shared her fear of stepping into a new genre and encouraged students not to be afraid of anything. She talked at length about how she started her online business. She launched a brand “Kaashida by Shiba” with a vision to bring-n a step change on how fashion studios could be managed professionally. She decided to divest and diversify the brand in the year 2015, into arts and crafts. Now she is creates embroidered portraits.

Ms. Shiba elaborated on the materials that she use for her creations and showed a presentation on the variety of products. She explained how she turned her hobby of hand needlework into a source of income. She urged students to explore various areas to discover what they enjoy and excel at. Ms. Parneet Brar, Guest faculty at UIFT, hosted this webinar, which drew about 50 students and alumni. Participants enthusiastically took part in the discussion by asking insightful questions at the end of the presentation.

IIC- UIPS celebrated National Science Day

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences & MOE’s Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC- UIPS) celebrated National Science Day

University Institute of Pharmaceutical Sciences (UIPS), Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with MOE’s Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC-UIPS) celebrated National Science Day yesterday i.e. Friday 25th February 2022. The National Science Day is observed every year on February 28th.

On this occasion, Dr N Ganesh, Head, Senior Scientist & Consultant Oncogenetic Dept. of Research, Jawaharlal Nehru Cancer Hospital & Research Centre (JNCH), Bhopal, Madhya Pradesh, delivered a talk on the topic “Supremacy of Indian great Boffins: The unsung story” followed by felicitations of winners of National youth day online poster presentation contest held in January 2022.

Professor Anil Kumar, Chairperson, UIPS extended a cordial welcome to all the participants and introduced the distinguished speaker of the occasion.

Dr N Ganesh shed light on the unsung Indian scientists who gave new dimensions and revolutionized world of science. He mentioned examples of great scientists galore like Aryabhatta who discovered earth’s rotational time and also invented zero; Nagarjuna who discovered process of alloying, distillation, sublimation, calculation and coloring of metals; Nobel Laureate Sir C.V. Raman who contributed immensely in the field of light scattering; Prafulla Chandra Roy, the father of Indian Chemical Science; APJ Abdul Kalam, Missile man of India as well as many others. His talk mainly focused on the scientists who got lost in the history despite their great contribution towards science.

With rich experience in the field of cancer genetics, clinical genetics, radiation biology, clinical and molecular genetics, immunophenotyping, Dr N Ganesh is the first in world to develop in-vivo Orthotopic Colon Tumor and metastasis Colon Tumor model in mice for targeted anti-cancer drug delivery. He has 134 publications with an impact factor of 210.11, presented more than 108 scientific papers and 157 posters at national as well as international conference. 

Professor Kanwaljit Chopra, Vice President, IIC-UIPS joined Prof. Anil Kumar and Dr Vandita Kakkar in felicitating the guest speaker Dr N Ganesh as well as judges and winners of National Youth Day Online Poster Presentation contest with certificates and cash prize.

Dr Vandita Kakkar, Convener, IIC-UIPS concluded the session by extending vote of thanks.

The whole session enlightened the audience about the importance of ethics and humanity in the development of science. Around 100 participants attended the session, including distinguished guests, UIPS faculty and student members.

BABA BULLE SHAH IS THE REVOLUTIONARY VOICE OF PUNJAB, PUNJABI AND PANJABIAT

Baba Bulle Shah is unanimously acknowledged as the revolutionary voice of Punjab, Punjabi and Punjabiat, says Dr. Ali Abbas, Coordinator of the Department of Urdu, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

In his opening remarks at the webinar organized by the department of Urdu here today, Dr. Ali Abbas said that the great Sufi Saint and a Poet in Baba Bulle Shah contributed handsomely to bridge the gulf between Hindus and Muslims through his melodious poetical compositions.  “He enriched the glorious legacy of Baba Farid,  Baba Nanak, Shah Hussain and many other with his majestic poetry decorated with rhyme and rhythm.  He was a unique and fearless opinion builder who motivated Punjabis to stand up for the cause of freedom of speech and expression”, he added.

Dr. Ali Abbas further said that Baba Bulle Shah was a strong votary of composite Punjab culture.  He was blessed with the courage of conviction and fearlessly championed the cause of love and compassion and also of mutual faith and cooperation.

In his key note address Mr. Shamim Tariq from Mumbai touched at length covering all the aspects of Bulle Shah poetry.  “Firstly, it reflects the political scenario and political conditions during the life time of the great Sufi Poet and secondly, how he became the voice of a common man when he confronted religious bigotry and fanaticism.”

Mr. Shamim Tariq further said that Baba Bulle Shah like Kabir, Namdev, Tulsi Das, Shah Hussain, Rehman Baba and Waris Shah was also a product of his age and folk traditions and like others he too, propagated the message of love, mutual faith and co-existence while denouncing the politics of hatred, narrow parochialism, repression and coercion.

He stressed that mankind should always be grateful to God for the benedictions extended to all living beings for their mutual co-existence.

Dr. Zulaqar Ali presented the vote of thanks.

M.E. course of Department of ECE, UIET, P. U.Chandigarh has been accreditation by NBA

M.E. (ECE) course of Department of ECE, UIET, Panjab University Chandigarh has been accreditation by NBA for three years  up till 30.06.2024. It is a matter of great pride for UIET, as currently, it is the only M.E. (ECE) course in North India which has the prestigious NBA accreditation. Also, the graduate course of department is already accreditation since years.

Dr. Naresh Kumar, Coordinator (ECE), congratulated all the Faculty members and technical and support staff for their hard work and dedication for this process. He also welcomed Prof. Renu Vig,  who has recently been appointed as DUI of Panjab University. Prof. J.K Goswamy, Director UIET, also graced the event by his presence.

Director UIET congratulated all  and further laid emphasis on  recommendations and suggestions of NBA committee. He insisted on making these recommendations as the work culture of the department for coming years. Prof. Renu Vig  motivated  all to keep working hard.

The Department of Zoology organised an alumni lecture

            The Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh organised an alumni lecture as a part of its initiative to invite prominent alumni of the department for motivating the students of the department.   

            Ms. Samrita Kaur Gill, Joint Commissioner, Directorate of Data Management, Central Board of Indirect Taxes & Customs, New Delhi and an alumnus of the department delivered a talk on “My journey of becoming an Indian Revenue Service Officer” Ms. Samrita did her Bachelors and Masters from the Department of Zoology, Panjab University, Chandigarh. 

            In her talk, Ms. Samrita touched upon the how the curriculum of Zoology has contributed towards her growth and helped in getting through the competitive examinations. She particularly focused on the Classification of the fauna and basic subjects that helped her in securing good marks in general studies. She added that subjects related to Environment, which were part of the curriculum, also helped in preparing for the examinations.

            In the later part of her interaction with students, she focused on the challenges faced by women in administrative services and how she managed to survive with the same. During her talk, she also shared her fond memories of the department and got nostalgic especially for the marine trip of the department.

            Dr. Y.K. Rawal, Chairman of the department said that the idea for this series was put forward by our worthy Vice Chancellor Professor Raj Kumar; who always sought one to one interaction of the students with the departmental alumni.

            Prof. Sukhbir Kaur chaired the session and highlighted that the curriculum of the Department of Zoology has been revised as per the aspirations of the students. She highlighted that over the course of time, the University has evolved and it has its own IAS coaching centre which helps in providing appropriate training to the young aspirants.  More than 100 participants attended the talk and fully interacted with the speaker. Dr. Archana Chauhan co-ordinated the alumni talk.

Two Day National Workshop on Fundamentals of Good Laboratory Work Practices and Biorisk Management

After the third wave of COVID-19, Now that we are moving towards normalcy The Vice Chancellor of Panjab University, Prof Raj Kumar inaugurated a two Day National Workshop on “Fundamentals of Good Laboratory Work Practices and Biorisk Management” organized by the Department of Biophysics. This workshop is one of the first events being conducted by the University in the Physical mode after a gap of two years. Prof. Raj Kumar, in his opening remarks, appreciated the tireless efforts of the organizers for putting up such an important workshop in current challenging times. He emphasized that such events sensitize and motivate the students, research scholars and scientists to follow good laboratory practices and contribute to the society by spreading awareness about biohazards, waste management and their associated risks. He also emphasized to extend such outreach programs to all sections of the society. The Guest of Honour, Prof. A C Pandey, Director Inter-University Accelerator Centre (IUAC), New Delhi, joined the Inaugural session online and encouraged the participants and faculty alike. Participants showed great enthusiasm and registered from diverse streams.  The aim of this workshop is to promote Biosafety and Biosecurity awareness amongst young research scholars and students. This two-day programme shall include sessions on Biorisk characterization, Biowaste disposal, decontamination and use of animal models in research. The event was convened by Dr. Avneet Saini, Chairperson, Department Of Biophysics and Prof. Neena Capalash, Department Of the department of Biotechnology, Panjab University, Chandigarh.

VC Launched the First Video of Mehar Chand Mahajan Boys Hostel

            The first video of Mehar Chand Mahajan, Boys Hostel Number 1, Panjab University, Chandigarh was launched by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh on 24th Feb. 2021. The video features the facilities provided to the university residents and various activities carried out in the hostel throughout the year.

            This initiative was progressively supported by the DSWs  Prof. Jagtar Singh, Prof. Meena Sharma and Prof. Ashok Kumar. On this video release, Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, BH1 said that the video provides a glimpse of the efforts put by the residents and staff to make hostel a lively place for students while they are away from their families. He further added that this video is also a part of the University’s initiative headed by Director, Public Relations to showcase the positive activities carried out in the hostel for comprehensive growth of students.

L.L.B. 6th semester students being welcomed after a dramatic break of 2 years

The Chairperson of Department of laws, Prof. Dr. Devinder Singh formally welcomed students to the Campus after a long break of 2 years. Sir, in his first offline communication with students addressed the apprehensions of the students and acknowledged the fact that the younger generation has suffered a lot during the pandemic. We know this unique moment will present opportunities for our students to develop the essential capacities of resilience and recovery from unplanned setbacks. The main focus is to deliver the degree on time for the professional growth of the students.

Prof. Devinder emphasised on floating the idea of placement in the Department for which the placement brochure is under process. Sir, also expressed the relevance of Participation of the students in the upcoming events for which the feedback and any initiative of the students is being welcomed which will help in creating a more equitable and inclusive Department of laws community. As much as possible, adherence to the COVID protocols shall be followed in terms of wearing masks, social distancing. Looking forward to learning, exploring and growing together.
