PU NSS UNIT & PU Hostels HOLD “CLEANLINESS DRIVE”

Chandigarh March 14, 2022

A drive for cleanliness was organised by NSS,Panjab University in collaboration with Girls Hostel No. 1 and 2, International Hostel, Boys Hostel-1 & 2 as a part of celebration of the diamond jubilee i.e 75 years of independence. The event was organised by  Dr. Simran Preet, PO, NSS, Dr. Vivek Kumar, PO, NSS and Dr. Smita Sharma (Warden, GH-1) and Dr. Harjit Kaur (Warden, GH. -2). Dr. Nidhi from UICET also participated in the event. A large footfall of NSS volunteers and non-teaching staff was observed. The purpose of the drive was to dispose off biodegradable and non-biodegradable objects littering around in the vicinity of the hostels to avoid the siring/generation/foundation of  breeding beds for mosquitos. This activity has created awareness among NSS participants about the importance of waste segregation and  make students socially responsible and be more proactive in tackling environmental concerns. NSS team and hostel wardens motivated the participants to protect the environment from the plastic waste and to make these kinds of cleanliness activities a routine to keep their surroundings clean and green. The activity also encouraged students to be comfortable in cleaning public places as well. It was an inspiring event for all as everybody from teaching staff to non-teaching staff to students actively and enthusiastically participated in the drive making it a huge success.

Eminent scholar passes away

Chandigarh March 14, 2022

Dr Rajesh Kochhar passed away on 13th March after a brief illness. Professor Kochhar had been a Jawaharlal Fellow, a Fulbright Visiting Lecturer, a Visiting Scholar at University of Cambridge Department of History and Philosophy of Science; and honorary professor of History of Science and Technology at National Institute of Advanced Studies, Bangalore. He was the recipient of National Academy of Sciences India’s Professor R. C. Gupta Endowment History of Science Lecture Award and Indian National Science Academy’s 2014 Indira Gandhi Prize for Popularization of  Science. 

Professor Rajesh Kochhar was an Honorary Professor, Panjab University Mathematics Department and Co-convenor of the Panjab University Ruchi Ram Sahni 150th Birth Anniversary Celebrations Committee.

He obtained his M.Sc. Honours  School in Physics in 1967 and Ph.D. in 1973, both from Panjab University, Chandigarh, where he began his career as a lecturer. He was a Professor at Indian Institute of Astrophysics, Bangalore, in 1999, when he moved over to New Delhi to take charge as Director NISTADS: National Institute of Science, Technology and Development Studies, New Delhi (CSIR).  He had also been a Professor of Pharmaceutical Heritage in NIPER: National Institute of Pharmaceutical Education and Research (Government of India), Mohali. 

 Professor Kochhar published original research in  a number of fields :history and sociology of science & technology; science and education policy;  ancient Indian history;  and  modern astronomy and astrophysics. He authored a number of books, saliently , The Vedic People ( Orient Black Swan), English Education in India, 1715-1835 (Routledge),and  Sanskrit & British Empire ( Routledge). His views had been sought and published by magazines like Science and Nature as also by BBC Radio.

He had lectured extensively in India and abroad including Harvard, Cornell, University of Texas at Austin, Belfast, Brighton, Royal Dublin Society ,Tubingen,Copenhagen University and National Museum Copenhagen. He  delivered  a number of commemorative lectures including the 67th J.C. Bose Memorial Lecture at Bose Institute Kolkata and  Akshoy Datta Memorial Lecture at Indian Association for the Cultivation of Science, Kolkata. He also contributed articles in The Hindu, The Tribune, Indian Express, Times of India and other newspapers over the years.

जींद, हरियाणा:

चौधरी रणबीर सिंह विश्वविद्यालय जींद में नोर्थ जोन पुरुष हैंडबॉल प्रतियोगिता का आज से शुभारंभ हुआ। इस कार्यक्रम के मुख्य अतिथि संतोष धीमान जिला खेल एवं युवा कल्याणकारी अधिकारी जींद रहे। उन्होंने इस प्रतियोगिता का शुभारंभ की घोषणा की और खिलाड़ियों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि यह एक बहुत बड़ी उपलब्धि है कि विश्वविद्यालय में इस प्रतियोगिता का शुभारंभ हुआ है और सभी खिलाड़ियों को खेल की भावना से खेलने की प्रेरणा दी और अच्छा प्रदर्शन करने की शुभकामनाएं दी।

विश्वविद्यालय कुलसचिव प्रोफेसर लवलीन मोहन ने सभी खिलाड़ियों को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि खेल में खेल की भावना से खेलना चाहिए और अपने खेल पर ध्यान देना चाहिए। और अपने स्वास्थ्य का ध्यान रखना चाहिए। उन्होंने कहा कि विश्वविद्यालय में इस प्रकार की प्रतियोगिताओं का आयोजन होना बहुत ही हर्ष का विषय है। खेल में हार जीत होती रहती है सभी टीमों ने अपना संपूर्ण समर्पण अपनी टीम को देना चाहिए और अच्छा प्रदर्शन करने की कोशिश करनी चाहिए। खेल से व्यक्ति का सर्वांगीं विकाश होता है |

इसके बाद शारीरिक विभाग के विभागाध्यक्ष डॉ कुलदीप नारा ने आज के कार्यक्रम के मुख्य अथिति संतोष धीमान, विश्वविद्यालय कुलसचिव प्रोफेसर लवलीन मोहन, विश्वविद्यालय ऑफिशियल और इस प्रतियोगिता में आए सभी टीमो का उनके साथ आए कोच आदि का विश्वविद्यालय पहुंचने पर धन्यवाद किया और इस प्रतियोगिता के सफल आयोजन शुभकामनाएं दी और सभी खिलाड़ियों के उज्वल भविष्य की कामना की! इस पर्तियोगता का आयोजन 11-15 मार्च 2022 विश्वविद्यालय खेल परिषद द्वारा किया जा रहा है

मंच का संचालन कर रहे डॉ नरेश देशवाल खेल निदेसक, चौधरी रणबीर सिंह विश्वविद्यालय जींद ने सभी टीमों का विश्वविद्यालय में पहुंचने पर हार्दिक अभिनंदन व स्वागत किया। उन्होंने बताया की इस प्रतियोगिता में 33 विश्वविद्यालय की टीमों ने स्वीकृति की थी। इनमे से टॉप की चार टीम्स आल इंडिया इंटर यूनिवर्सिटी हैंडबॉल में भाग लेंगी। उन्होंने खेल के महत्व के बारे में बताया। उन्होंने सभी खिलाड़ियों को खेल की बारीकियों के बारे में बताते हुए कहा कि खेल से खिलाड़ी का सर्वांगीण विकास होता है और शरीर भी मजबूत रहता है। खिलाड़ियों में व्यक्तित्व का समजिक मानसिक व् शाररिक विकास होता है।

आज के परिणाम कुछ इस प्रकार रहे:

  1. पहला मुकाबला एग्रीकल्चर विश्वविद्यालय लुधियाना ने लखनऊ विश्वविद्यालय को 19-3आया है ।
  2. मीरपुर विश्वविद्यालय ने जम्मू विश्वविद्यालय को 16-12 से हराया।
  3. अमृतसर विश्वविद्यालय ने प्रयागराज विश्वविद्यालय को27-6 से हराया।
  4. शिमला विश्वविद्यालय ने हरियाणा एग्रीकल्चर विश्वविद्यालय हिसार को 21-13 से हराया।
  5. एमडीयू ने बुंदेलखंड यूनिवर्सिटी झांसी को 20-5 से हराया।
  6. गुरु जंभेश्वर यूनिवर्सिटी हिसार ने कुमाऊं यूनिवर्सिटी नैनीताल को 16 -7 से हराया।
  7. कुरुक्षेत्र विश्वविद्यालय कुरुक्षेत्र आने सेंट्रल यूनिवर्सिटी महेंद्रगढ़ को 20-5 के अंतर से हराया बाकी मुकाबले कल 9:00 बजे से होंगे ।

Professor Ram Chand Paul National Symposium in virtual mode on “Emerging Chemical Sciences with Modern world”

 The Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh conducted Professor Ram Chand Paul National Symposium (RCPNS-2022) in virtual mode on “Emerging Chemical Sciences with Modern world” on March 11, 2022. The symposium was conducted on Google Meet. The Department of Chemistry, Panjab University, Chandigarh has been holding this symposium every year for the last 30 years. The symposium was named as Prof. Ram Chand Paul National Annual Symposium in the year 2005 in the fond memory of our worthy ex-Vice Chancellor Prof. R.C. Paul.

The symposium began on 11, 2022 at 10:00       A.M. with an inaugural function. Professor T. Govindaraju, Bioorganic Chemistry Laboratory, New Chemistry Unit and Chair, Education Technology Unit, JNCASR, Bengaluru, India was the Chief Guest and Keynote speaker. Welcome address and introduction to the symposium was presented by Prof. Sonal Singhal, Chairperson, Department of Chemistry and Dr. Aman Bhalla, Convener RCPNS-2022. The technical session comprised of invited talks, poster presentations and oral cum poster presentations (3-5 min) were presented by young researchers/budding researchers (who are pursuing/recently completed their Ph.D). The poster presentations and oral cum poster presentations provides opportunity to young researchers provides opportunity to young researchers expressing their views and research work. Six poster presentation and oral cum poster presentations have been awarded a cash prize of Rs. 500 each.

In various technical sessions number of eminent scientists from India and abroad delivered their lectures. Prof. Alakesh Bisai (Indian Institute of Science Education and Research, Kolkata), Prof. Anil Kumar (Birla Institute of Technology and Science, Pilani), Dr. Vijayender Bhalla (CSIR-Institute of Microbial Technology, Chandigarh), Dr. Uma Shankar (Dr. B. R. Ambedkar National Institute of Technology, Jalandhar), Dr. Ajeet Kaushik (Florida Polytechnic University, Lakeland, Florida, USA) gave the invited talks.

Delegates from various fields related to chemistry from different parts of the country attended the symposium.

Blind student initiated the Plantation Drive during Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav at Panjab University

NSS in collaboration with Boys Hostel-3 organized a Plantation Drive on 6th day of Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Dheeru Yadav, a Blind research scholar and resident of hostel no-3 initiated the drive. With the facilitation of Horticulture division of Panjab University, around 35 samplings of different varieties like Hibiscus, Kaner, Nerium Indicum, Banyan, Neem, Ficus Benghalensis, & Bael were planted by Programme officers, staff and NSS volunteers. The event was attended by Programme officers including Dr. Shankar Sehgal, Dr. Vivek Kumar, Dr. Lokesh Kumar, Dr. Simran Preet, and Atul Kumar, and 50 NSS volunteers and hostel residents and staff. Dr. Naveen Kumar, Programme Officer in vote of thanks address, mentioned and appreciated the efforts of Dr. J. S. Sehrawat, the convener of the event, hostel staff and NSS Volunteers for smooth conduct of the drive. 

 Webinar organized by Centre for Stem Cell Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Excellence

Panjab University in collaboration with Global Institute of Stem Cell Therapy And Research (GIOSTAR USA) organized a special webinar on Clinical Advancement in Regenerative Medicine and the Role of Stem Cell Based therapies on visual deficits in mild traumatic brain injury. The event was organized by the Centre for Stem Cell Tissue Engineering & Biomedical Excellence  under aegis of DBT Builder Grant (Group III) to extend industry academia collaborations.Dr. Seemha Rai, Chairperson, Centre for Stem Cell Tissue Engineering and Biomedical Excellence gave the welcome address and expressed her gratitude to the speakers, distinguished guests and participants for attending the event. Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Dean Research who was the Chief Guest for the occasion gave very profound and thought provoking introductory remarks. Prof. Sanjeev Puri, Founder Coordinator Centre for Stem Cell & Tissue Engineering also marked his presence by gracing the event as a Guest of Honor and emphasized the dire need of stem cell based research to unravel the mysteries of our ancient scientific practices.The key speakers Dr. Sahiba Singh, Assistant Director Medical Services (GIOSTAR) enlightened the participants with recent advances in Regenerative Medicine and Dr. Kumar AbhiramJha, Scientist (GIOSTAR) explained the beneficial role of stem cell based therapies in mild traumatic brain injuries. The speakers highlighted the immense potential of stem cells in treating various diseases including COVID and giving a ray of hope to numerous patients suffering from terminal ailments. Dr. Veena Puri, Associate Professor, Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatic sproposed vote of thanks to the speakers for an elaborative and informative session and igniting young minds to pursue research in this exciting field and to all the Distinguished Guests and participants for joining in large numbers as the webinar was well attended by the Faculty Members, research scholars and students of the departments.

Dean College Development Council organizes panel discussion on “India’s Achievements at 75” as a part of the celebration of Iconic Event Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav on March 10, 2022

An invigorating and very illuminating panel discussion on “India’s Achievements at 75” was organized on March 10, 2022 at the Seminar Hall of the Rajiv Gandhi College Bhawan at Panjab University, Chandigarh by Prof Anju Suri, Dean College Development Council, as a part of the celebrations of Iconic Event Week of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. While expounding on the theme of the panel discussion, Prof. Anju Suri, DCDC, extended a warm and a cordial welcome to the panelists and the participants. 

The Chief Guest for the occasion who inaugurated the Panel Discussion was the Honourable Vice Chancellor of the Panjab University Prof Raj Kumar. Prof Raj Kumar highlighted the role of Innovation and Research in fuelling development and sustainability in India amongst the youth.  Prof. Raj Kumar particularly stressed the academia-industry partnership and encouraged the young participants to focus on their talents and start ups as a building process of nation. He also stressed on the need of the holistic development of personality which may be drawn from National Education Policy (NEP)-2020.

Prof Sudhir Kumar, Dean Research, Panjab University was the Guest of Honour and he delved at length on the significance of Shiksha (education) and Diksha (Right Knowledge and conduct) during his address.

The Moderator for the session was Dr Veenu Mangat, Assosiate Professor and Coordinator, Information and Technology Department, University Institute of Engineering and Technology, Panjab University. The august and attentive audience comprised of the various teachers and students drawn from the various universities and colleges affiliated to the Panjab University.

The panel discussion started on a calming note by a brief meditation session that was organized by Prof Savita Kansal, Fellow and Principal, Brahmrishi Yoga Training College, Sector 19, Chandigarh.

Prof. Devender Singh, Fellow and Chairperson, Department of Laws, Panjab University, Chandigarh emphasized on the role of the Constitution and the significance of the Rule of Law which has made the true freedom of the citizens of India possible. He also talked of the need to reflect on the Dharma and cultural connections that are the root of the composite culture of our country.

Prof Nisha Bhargava, Principal, Mehar Chand Mahajan DAV College for Women, Sector 36, talked of the economic contexts of the freedom movement and how India has been able to become a self sustaining and food surplus country through the means of the Green Revolution by harnessing the power of our agrarian economy. 

Prof. Ajay Sharma, Principal, GGDSD College, Sector 32, Chandigarh delved on the need for building and fostering the vocational education culture amongst the youth as a means of taking India forward into the future.

Prof Navjot Kaur, Principal, Sri Guru Gobind Singh College, Sector 26, drew the attention of the audience on the need for the development of an innovative mindset and skill up-gradation as a means to fuel the development of the nation as well as promotion of inclusiveness and equal opportunity.

Prof. Sapna Nanda, Principal, Government College for Yoga Education, Sector 23, took the audience on an audio-visual journey through the means of a short documentary on the holistic importance of yoga in the life of an individual, especially during the time of the recent global health crisis.

Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav at Panjab University

NSS in collaboration with Boys Hostel-2 organized a Plantation Drive on 5th day of Iconic Week Celebrations of Azadi Ka Amrit Mahotsav. Dr. Naveen Kumar and Dr. Tilak Raj welcomed the guests and inspired the students not only to plant trees but also to take care of these trees for sustainable outcomes. With the facilitation of Horticulture division of Panjab University, around 20 samplings of different varieties like Hibiscus, Kaner, and Nerium Indicum were planted by faculty members, staff and NSS volunteers.

एक्सटेंशन लेक्चरर्स ने आमरण अनशन खोला

पंचकूला,मार्च 8, 2022:

मुख्यमंन्त्री ओर शिक्षा मंत्री के निर्देश पर आज हायर एजुकेशन डिपार्टमेंट के एडिशनल चीफ सेक्रेटरी आनंद मोहन शरण जी से एक्सटेंशन लेक्चरर्स वेलफेयर एसोसिएशन की 5 सदस्य  प्रतिनिधि मंडल की मीटिंग हुई।मीटिंग में हायर एजुकेशन डिपार्टमेंट के डिप्टी डायरेक्टर सुखविंदर जी,हेमंत वर्मा जी और जॉइन डायरेक्टर दीपक शर्मा जी शामिल थे।

एक्सटेंशन लेक्चरर्स वेलफेयर एसोसिएशन के प्रदेश अध्यक्ष श्री ईश्वर सिंह ओर  सह सचिव सरोज दहिया ने बताया कि मीटिंग सकारात्मक रही है और एक्सटेंशन लेक्चरर्स की ज्यादातर माँगो पर सहमति बनने पर 21 फरवरी से आमरण अनशन पर बैठे एक्सटेंशन लेक्चरर्स ने आमरण अनशन खोलने का निर्णय लिया।सरकार के निर्देश पर हायर एजुकेशन डिपार्टमेंट के आला अधिकारियों ने धरने स्थल पर पहुँचकर आमरण अनशनकारी शेर सिंह(कलायत) सरोज दहिया(अम्बाला) डॉ तरुणा पंघाल( भिवानी) ,वीरेंदर जी ( अम्बाला) ईश्वर सिंह(रेवाडी) को जूस पिलाकर आमरण अनशन खुलवाया । राज्य कार्यकरणी सदस्य शेर सिंह ने बताया कि दूसरे दौर की वार्ता जल्दी ही मुख्यमंन्त्री हाउस में मुख्यमंन्त्री ओर शिक्षा मंत्री के साथ होगी।इसके साथ ही उन्होंने बताया कि आमरण अनशन खोल दिया गया है लेकिन जब तक सभी माँगो के पत्र जारी नही होंगे तब तक सांकेतिक धरना जारी रहेगा।आज मीटिंग के लिए जाने वाले सदस्य डॉ इंदु,डॉ श्रेयशी, प्रो वीरेंद्र ,प्रो सरोज दहिया ओर प्रदेश अध्यक्ष ईश्वर सिंह ।

Capacity Building Program for Security Guards of Panjab University

From 8th March to 12 March 2022

            A five days Capacity Building Program for Security Guards of Panjab University was inaugurated in the seminar hall of Centre for Police Administration, Panjab University on 8th March 2022 being organized by Centre for Police Administration in collaboration with Human Resource Development Centre (HRDC), Panjab University, Chandigarh. Anil Monga, Chairperson, Centre for Police Administration and Coordinator of the program, while welcoming the participants highlighted the significant role of the security staff in building positive perception of the University in the minds of various stakeholders visiting Panjab University.

            Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean International Students, Panjab University, interacted with the participants and highlighted the significance of effective communication and proactive behavior in public dealing. The session used role play and activities for training of security guards.

            Dr. Shahid Quraishi from Max Hospital, Mohali interacted with the participants on how to respond to various health emergency situations and provide first aid to the people in need. He gave practical demonstrations and trained the security staff in giving CPR to the accident victims to save the precious lives during the ‘golden hour’. He also trained the security guards in handling dog/monkey/snake bite cases on the campus. The third session was devoted to sensitize the security guards about the road safety education and traffic management. Mr. Rajeev Sharma, Senior Constable from Chandigarh Police shared with the participants about various rules and regulations on road safety and traffic handling on the campus. The capacity building program is being attended by 40 security guards of Panjab University, Chandigarh.
