69th Annual Convocation of Panjab University held today

Today i.e. 6th May, 2022, 69th Annual Convocation of Panjab University, Chandigarh  held at Gymnasium Hall, Sector-14, Panjab University Campus. Hon’ble M.Venkaiah Naidu, the Vice President of India and Chancellor, Panjab University graced the occasion as Chief Guest. Sh. Banwarilal Purohit,  Hon’ble Governor of Punjab, Sh. Bandaru Dattatreya, the Hon’ble Governor of Haryana, Sh. Bhagwant Mann, Chief Minister, Punjab, Sh. Manohar Lal Khattar, Chief Minister, Haryana, and Sh. Som Prakash, Union Minister of Commerce and Industry graced the occasion.

The Convocation started with the welcome address by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University. He shared various achievements of the University (Detailed speeech attached).

The book entitled Advances in Animal Experimentation and Modeling

The book entitled Advances in Animal Experimentation and Modeling Edited by DR R .C .Sobti Former Vice Chancellor Panjab University Chandigarh and Babasahib Bhim Rao Ambedkar University, Lucknow, Former Education Advosor Governor of Bihar Published by Ms Elsevier Publisher was released today by His Excellency Sh Banwari Lal Purohit Governor of Punjab. The book elaborately discusses organ-specific systemic manifestations of Animal systems. The initial chapters convey the current knowledge on the origin and evolution of the Animal Science, followed by the elaborate concepts on pathogenesis and immune responses during in animal system . This volume also provides insight into the role of animal experimentation and modeling. All the relevant aspects besides other health related issues have been discussed as individual chapters in this book.

Dr Sobti has published more than 350 papers and about 45 books and is fellow of a number of academies /societies including Indian National Science Academy, and Third world Academy besides he his Padmashri Awarded

The Biochemistry Department hosted a Blood Donation Camp

            The Biochemical Society of the Department of Biochemistry, Panjab University partnered with the Department of Transfusion Medicine, PGIMER, Chandigarh and Smile Forever (NGO) to host a Blood Donation Camp on May 05, 2022. The event was flagged off by Prof. Jagtar Singh, Dean, Student Welfare, PU and Prof. Navneet Agnihotri, Chairperson, Department of Biochemistry, PU who emphasized on the importance of blood donation in current times. Prof. Archana Bhatnagar, President of Biochemical Society informed that nearly hundred volunteers participated and around fifty units of blood was collected.

Centre for Social Work, presented poems and songs on International labour day.

Centre for Social Work, Panjab University marked International labour day on 2nd of may,2022.All the workers from University Institute of Emerging Area in Social Sciences (UIEASS) were invited as guest for the event. Students from first and second year presented poems and songs on International labour day.

The event started at 11:00 am with a formal introduction by Gurider and Chinglensana. Arpna Raatu,Research Scholar shared the importance of International labour day. Shiv shared the historical background of International labour day.Chairperson Dr. Gaurav Gaur and Prof Monica M. Singh facilitated all the presented worker.Dr. Gaurav Gaur and Prof Monica M. Singh presented a utility token from Centre for social work to all the presented workers.  Jasmandeep,Gurmeet,Aman,Vivek,Gurinder,Arunbir,Heera,Arshdeep,Chitwan,Supreet presented the poems on labour day.

Shradha a student of 1st year gave the official vote of thanks to all the present guests, workers ,research scholars and students.

Professor Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh awarded the participants of youth festival 2021-22 at VC office. Students who preceded to interzonal youth festival and won prizes were awarded with the certificates at the event. Jhoomer team had gained first prize with Harshdeep bagging individual first prize for best dancer,Himanshi had acquired second prize in folk song where as Deeksha had won third prize for Classical dance at interzonal youth festival which was held at Hoshiarpur. central service rules to be applicable from 1st April 2022 on employees of Chandigarh : Home Ministry

Through recent notification of Home Ministry, central service rules are applicable from 1st April 2022 on employees of Chandigarh that are under administrative control of the Administrator of Chandigarh. As a result of this notification, teachers of many colleges of Chandigarh have got 7th pay scales and will now retire at 65 years. Interestingly, being inter-state corporate body, Panjab University has not been covered in this notification and therefore University teachers are still to get 7th Pay scales and other central benefits. As per prevalent conditions, Panjab University teachers are retiring at age of 60 years whereas their fellow colleagues from colleges in Panjab University will now retire at age of 65 years. 


More than 100 faculty members of Panjab University, Chandigarh met the Vice Chancellor of Panjab University and Sh. Satya Pal Jain, Ex. Member of Parliament and Additional Solicitor General of India who is senior most fellow of PU. Faculty members submitted to the one representation addressed to Sh. Amit Shah, Honourable Union Home Minister of India, that was signed by more than 500 teachers of Panjab University. In the representation, teachers of Panjab University have requested to make conditions of service including pay scales, for faculty of Panjab University to be such as specified in UGC regulations. Dr Parveen Goyal, who is member of present Senate, Panjab University, appreciated numerous positive works that Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar has done in last 3.5 years for development of the University. He appreciated Shri Satya Pal Jain’s pivotal role in implementation of central service rules on employees of Chandigarh and requested Shri Satya Pal Jain to personally deliver to Shri Amit Shah representation signed by 500+ teachers of Panjab University to personally advocate the representation before Shri Amit Shah. Professor Manu Sharma, who fought PUTA elections in 2021, said that historically Panjab University has international character and deserves very opulent existence. He emphasized that it is high time that some concrete solution to perennial financial crisis plaguing Panjab University should be conceived as soon as possible.

Dr Naresh Mehandia from UIET observed that it is historic moment for Panjab University that 100+ teachers from different departments of Panjab University have collectively come on same page today and interacted with Vice Chancellor of University and Shri Satya Pal Jain in a very cordial atmosphere, for implementation of UGC regulations on teachers of Panjab University.

Dr Neeraj Singh, Executive member of PUTA, expressed his satisfaction that after a long time real issues concerning our University have been discussed with authorities in very conducive environment. Dr Sucha Singh and Dr Arvind Kumar felt that Panjab University being located in Chandigarh should have service conditions and pay scales similar to other employees of Chandigarh.

Dr Priyatosh expressed his happiness that honourable Vice Chancellor has assured that all the stakeholders of Panjab University would soon get a good news because he felt that the collective efforts of the teachers can never go waste.

Vice Chancellor Professor Raj Kumar and Shri Satya Pal Jain assured the teachers that they will try their level best to realize demands articulated by teachers in their representation.

Centre for Social Work organised an interactive session with the alumnies

Centre for Social Work, Panjab University organised an interactive session with the alumni of the centre for social work on 30th April 2022. The session started at 10:00 am with a formal introduction by Gurinder (A student of Masters of social work). Chairperson Dr. Gaurav Gaur introduced all the presented alumni named Anmol Kaur, Sudhir Baniwal, Ramneet Singh and Shivani Sood from different batches.

All the alumni shared their experiences during their Master’s from the department along with the fieldwork practicum. Also, they shared their professional experience in different settings like child care, tribal welfare and inclusive education at different geographical locations.

Gurmeet from 2nd   year gave the official vote of thanks to all the present guests, teachers research scholars and students and

The Annual Function cum Felicitation Ceremony by the  Department of  Youth Welfare,  Panjab University Chandigarh was commemorated  with great enthusiasm and zeal to celebrate each other wins and achievements. The program was enlightened by the presence of Prof  Raj Kumar, Hon’ble Vice Chancellor, Panjab University Chandigarh, the entire team of Panjab University, Youth Welfare Department, many dignitaries such as Deans, Principals of various colleges, faculty members and students who participated wholeheartedly towards the success of this grand event.  The Department of Youth Welfare ,Panjab University Chandigarh, has been the front-runner in contributing to the cause of Youth welfare along with the overall development of students by organizing Youth Festivals and various co-curricular activities.

Hon’ble Vice Chancellor Prof Raj Kumar in his Presidential Remarks said that the hard work, commitment, dedication and sincerity are the keys for success in life .  The Vice Chancellor acknowledged the efforts of the Director, Youth Welfare for his commitment towards duty.

 He appreciated collaborative efforts of the Department along with  Principals, Teachers, and the Students of various colleges for organizing and participating in Youth Festivals and youth welfare activities. He was visibly impressed by the impeccable performance showcased by the Director  Youth Welfare .

Director Youth Welfare, Dr. Nirmal Jaura, in his speech to the audience mentioned that department of Youth Welfare provides a platform to the students to present and to groom their talents and leadership qualities. The department aims at providing students with cultural environment so as to shape their personality and develop their physical, mental, social, aesthetical and spiritual dimension & cultivate human qualities like integrity, honesty and tolerance by organizing Youth festivals, youth leadership camps, workshops, seminars, various inter-college and intra-college competitions. He by quoting his own life experiences  said that More the students are able to join in the creative expressions the sense of accomplishment inculcates values for nurturing, caring for others and for nature.

The latest issue of the annual magazine of the Department Jawan Tarang was also released by the Vice Chancellor.


The  Felicitation Ceremony also took place in the function. The team of organisers of various activities conducted by the youth welfare department, Principals, teachers and the successful students and winners of  various youth activities for their outstanding performance bestowed the prizes, honoured and felicitated with attractive trophies and Certificates of Merit to keep working hard with sincere endeavours.


Dr Anju Suri DCDC, Mr Jatinder Moudgil Manager Press  were also present on this occasion.

Three Ph.D. Scholars of Dr. Kewal Krishan qualified the FACT and FACT Plus -2022

Three Ph.D. research scholars of the Department of Anthropology, Panjab University, Chandigarh, have qualified the FACT and FACT plus exam (Forensic Aptitude and Caliber Test) 2022, in the subject of Forensic Biological Sciences. The exam was conducted by Ministry of Home Affairs, Govt. of India. The PhD scholars, Rakesh Meena, Ankita Guleria and Nandini Chitara are pursuing their PhD under the supervision of Professor (Dr.) Kewal Krishan, a renowned forensic anthropologist.

Rakesh Meena is a Forensic Document Examiner and has joined Ph.D. in Dec. 2020. He has cleared UGC-NET exam three times and now availing the fellowship by Ministry of Tribal Affairs (NFST) for pursuing Ph.D.

Ankita Guleria is a Gold Medalist in Masters of Forensic Science (2017-19) and has joined Ph.D. in November 2020 and presently availing prestigious INSPIRE fellowship by Department of Science and Technology (DST), Govt. of India.

Nandini Chitara has recently joined her Ph.D. and she has qualified UGC-NET and JRF in 2020. She also worked as an Assistant Professor in the Department of Forensic Sciences (Dyal Singh College, Karnal).

After successfully qualifying the FACT examination, the students have become eligible to work in any Forensic Science laboratory/Forensic Science Institute of India. Prof. Kewal Krishan added that this is a pride moment for Panjab University that the students have qualified the examination and the PU is the right place for such brilliant students for pursing their doctoral research. The students are thankful to Panjab University authorities for providing all the facilities which allowed them to go through the relevant material and books.
