Panjab University Girls Hostels, Sector 25 cluster (Girls Hostel No.8 to 10 and International Hostel), under the able guidance of Prof. Jagtar Singh (Dean Student Welfare), Prof Meena Sharma (Dean Student Welfare-Women), Prof. Ashok Kumar (Associate-DSW), organized a lecture on “Menstrual Health, Reproductive Rights and Consent” to celebrate Menstrual Hygiene Day (28.05.2022). The guest speakers Prof. Jyoti Seth and Mrs. Neeraj Aggarwal interacted with the female participants and discussed various issues related to the menstruation including societal taboos, health problems and proper disposal of menstrual waste. The lecture created awareness among the young female residents about the menstruation cycle and breaking the taboos or challenges for the access of menstrual products. A good number of students participated in the interactive session. Prof Meena Sharma (DSW-W), Dr. Shipra Gupta (Warden, GH-09), Dr. Simran Kaur (Warden, GH-08), Dr. Varinder Kaur (Warden GH-10) and Dr. Ravinder Kaur (Warden, IH) were also present in the session.

PU DLIS celebrated International Museum Day

The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh celebrated International Museum Day 2022 today on 18.05.2022. Every year International Museum Day (IMD) is organized on 18th May. The Theme of the event was “The Power of Museums”. The theme focuses on exploring the power of museums to achieve sustainability, to innovate on digitalization and accessibility, and the power of community building through education.

The event commenced with a brief introduction, history and significance about this day. Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the department initiated the event. All the faculty members of the department presented their views on the relevance of museums in the society. They emphasized that museums collect, preserve, interpret, and display objects of artistic, cultural, or scientific significance for the education of the public. Museums help to preserve and promote our cultural heritage. Students took part in various activities and presented the information on significant museums in different states and UTs of India like Chandigarh, Punjab, Haryana, Himachal Pradesh, Uttrakhand, Uttar Pradesh and Jammu & Kashmir and shared their viewpoints regarding sustaining the museums in the future through innovative solutions. Overall, the event was fruitful with proactive participation of students, research scholars and the faculty members.

Population Research Center organised  a webinar on Social Dimensions

Population Research Centre Panjab university   organised  a webinar on “Social Dimensions and Social Security Programs for Elderly in India”  on Date 18.5.2022 ( Wednesday ). Webinar was inaugurated by Prof. Sudhir Kumar Dean Research Panjab University and Chaired by Prof. Suresh Sharma Head, Population Research Centre Institute of Economic Growth New Delhi.  Prof. T V Sekhar Head Department of Family and Generations at International Institute of Population Sciences (IIPS) Mumbai was the key speaker of the webinar. He was highlighted the social security of aged population in India. He also discussed the findings of the longitudinal ageing survey in India (LASI). The webinar was attended by people from diverse field and researcher from population research centres also actively participated. Prof. Kumool Abbi gave the vote of thanks.

Orientation regarding gender-based discriminations organised

Centre for Social Work, Panjab University, Chandigarh has organised three days workshop (13th, 14th  May, & 16th May 2022) regarding an orientation to gender based discrimination by Professor Jyoti Seth, Head (Retd.) Department of Sociology, Post Graduate Govt College for Girls sector 42, Chandigarh. The session started with the brief discussion on Gender and sex, she explained that gender which is not male and female but man, woman, and transgender. Gender discrimination is faced by mostly women and transgender’s. This discrimination is because of patriarchy that is prevalent in India from roots and to remove this discrimination not only women have to speak about their right but also men have to change their views. Individual and group activities were performed which made students made to think about various topics (dowry, domestic violence, sayings about men and women, against birth of girl child etc.) which are main factors leading to discrimination. The session was interactive and group activity further refined the learning process of the students. The masters in social work students and research scholars participated in the workshop.

Dr. Gaurav Gaur, Chairperson alongwith Prof. Jyoti Seth answered the queries related to the theme asked by the students. The students asked questions from live-in-relationship, marriage, divorce and cultural practices prevalent in our society. The token of gratitude was presented to the resource person by the faculty and the students. It was very interactive and enlightening session for the students.

One-day Poetry Festival organized at Panjab University

Chandigarh, 13 May: A one-day long poetry festival was jointly organized by the Department of English and Cultural Studies and Dean, International Students, at Panjab University on Friday to commemorate the World Language Day that fell on 23 April.

The festival kicked off with two eminent poets, Sudeep Sen and Anamika, reciting their poems in English and Hindi, respectively. The event was tri-lingual. While Anamika translated Sudeep’s poems into Hindi, Sudeep translated Anamika’s into English. Parminder Singh, a research scholar of the department, also read Sudeep Sen’s poems into Punjabi translation. The audience especially enjoyed the synchronized renderings of the various poems in three languages. Anamika read poems largely on women-related issues and their sisterhood. Her poems were also translated by the students of the department into Punjabi and were read out before a receptive audience.

The Chairperson of the Department of English and Cultural Studies, Professor Akshaya Kumar, held an engaging and thoughtful conversation with the two poets regarding their poetic endeavors and their experience with translation in contrast. Both the poets traced their poetic ancestry to multiple Indian traditions.

Neha Bansal (IAS), a former student of the department, and Ranjit Saranwali, both poets awarded and published by Sahitya Akademi Delhi, presented their poems in English and Punjabi, respectively, in the post-lunch session. Thereafter, the students of the various departments of the university took the stage to present their original poems. Their poems written across languages had a ready resonance among the young audience. The day ended with Sudeep Sen’s kind words of encouragement to budding poets not to lose heart and keep writing. Dean, International Students, Deepti Gupta’s support for the event was appreciated by the audience.

Medical Health Check-Up Camp at PU Hostel

Medical Health Awareness and Check-Up Camp was organized at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hall, Boy’s Hostel No. 4, Panjab University, Chandigarh for Mess and Canteen workers, here today. The Medical Health checkup for the mess and canteen workers was conducted by Medical Officers Dr. Divya Sawhney and Dr. Shatakshi Arya, Dr. Bharti Sharma, Dr. Ashwani and Dr. Sanjay.

The concept of Medical Health Awareness & Check-Up Camp was initiated 2017, at Sardar Vallabh Bhai Patel Hall, Boy’s Hostel No. 4, in association with Centre for Public Health. The Camp included the thirty minutes health talk regarding Hand Hygiene and Hand Washing Technique by the Ms. Anjuman Brar and Dr. Ashima respectively. Besides, the camp also focused on the issue of personal hygiene, cleanliness, handwashing technique followed by the medical health check-up camp of the Mess and Canteen workers.

The camp was inaugurated by Professor Jagtar Singh, Dean Student Welfare, Panjab University. Prof. Jagtar while addressing the mess and canteen workers highlighted the need to keep the kitchen and residential area neat and clean. Further, he highlighted that health is a state of complete physical, mental and social well being. For a healthy life cycle, a person needs to have a balanced diet and has to regularly exercise. One must also live in a proper shelter, take enough sleep and have good hygiene habits.

The Guest of Honour, Prof. Savita Prashar, Guest of Honour and Coordinator of the Centre for Public Health, apprised that the health of workers is very important and we are committed to provide best facilities in the interest of student welfare and that more than forty mess and canteen workers besides hostel-staff are benefitted by this camp today.

Later, the Medical Check-up Camp including Body Mass Index, Dermatological Diagnosis, Oral/Dental hygiene was conducted by Dr. Kunal, Dr. Divya, Dr. Iram, Dr. Sunny and Dr. Gursimran under the able guidance of Dr. Manoj Kumar Sharma from the Centre for Public Health.

The programme was conducted by Mr. Rohil, Mr. Pardeep Buttola and Mr. Harchand Singh of Boy’s Hostel No. 4. Later, the appreciation certificates were disturbed to all who contributed for the successful organization of the programme.

Webinar in Panjab University on the theme “Russia-Ukraine Crisis and Implications for India”

Department of Defence and National Security, Panjab University Chandigarh organised a webinar on the theme “Russia-Ukraine Crisis and Implications for India” delivered by Prof Shrikant Paranjpe, from Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University, Pune.

The speaker is currently a Research Fellow, Centre for Military Studies, Faculty of Military Science, Stellenbosch University, Cape Town, South Africa and Adjunct Professor in the Department of Defence and Strategic Studies, Savitribai Phule Pune University. He was a Fulbright Fellow (Post-Doctoral, Research) at the George Washington University, Washington D.C. during 1985-86. He was also a Jawaharlal Nehru National Fellow (ICSSR) during 2016-17. He has numbers of national and international publications to his academic credits.

Dr. Jaskaran Singh Waraich, Chairperson of the department initiated the proceeding of the webinar by welcoming the speaker as well as faculty, research scholars, and the students of the department. The Chairperson also introduced the speaker to the participants while highlighting the significance of the theme of the lecture.

Prof. Shrikant Paranjpe, in his opening remarks pointed out that Ukrainian crisis is an outcome of contesting regional and global interests of Russia and the United States of America. In his address, he emphasized that the media narratives have been dominated by the pro-west perspective on the ongoing Russia-Ukraine Crisis which proves the failure of Russia in building-up the world public opinion in their favour.

He made an appeal to the academia to diversify their sources of information to bring out a broader perspective on the crisis. The speaker commended the Indian Foreign Ministry for emphatically explaining its stand on the War. But, he expressed his dissatisfaction over the menial role being played by the Indian media in explaining India’s stand on the issue, rather it appears shadowed by the western propaganda and narratives.

In his concluding remarks, Prof. Paranjpe said that the crisis would lead to uncertain geo-political and security environment in the world in general and Europe in particular. He asserted that this war has also challenged the established dollar-dominance in the existing world economic web. Furthermore, he was of the view that US will continue to remain relevant hard and soft power in the foreseeable future.

A seminar was organized for the students by Dr.SSBUICET and ERC in collaboration with Laxmibai Hall (Girls Hostel No. 2) .The main objective of this talk was to teach the students how to save plants in summer.

Prabhunath Shahi, the founder of Jai Madhu Sudan Jai Shri Krishna Society, was present as the speaker in this seminar and gave information to all the students on planting saplings.

During this, Prof Amrit Pal Toor (Chairperson ) and faculty members of the department, Dr. Sonia Sharma, Dr. Harjit Kaur, Dr. Ritu Gupta and other teachers were also present.

In this seminar, especially the first year students of the department were given information about environmental protection in a very detailed and interesting manner.

Specially in today’s lecture, Shahi told how we can protect our plants as well as maintain them and maintain greenery during the summer.  Shahi also gave some important suggestions such as keeping in mind the time of watering in summer, using mulching, avoiding excessive watering, not pruning the branches of plants in the summer season and keeping them with their own roots.  You can also use shade cover while not moving from there.  Through today’s lecture, Prabhunath Shahi tried to convey this to the Prime Minister of the country that now the time has come for the Prime Minister to plant saplings and see the slogan of save the saplings and

inspire the countrymen to save the saplings.

At the same time, all the students present, keeping the birds in mind at various places inside the campus, arrangements were made for the water and the students were promised that they would take care of the birds’ water and feed.

Amritpal Toor told the students that, whoever plants a student in the campus, he should consider it his duty to take care of him till the end of his semester for the next three years.

In the end, Professor Amritpal Toor and all the Faculty Members and students expressed their heartfelt thanks to Prabhunath Shahi for this wonderful lecture.

National Technology Day celebrated at SAIF PU

SAIF/CIL PU celebrated National Technology Day on Thursday under the Chief Patronship of Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor PU and Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Dean Research inaugurated the event. The Technology Day was attended by faculty members, research scholars and students of various departments. On this occasion, Dr. Yogesh Nagpal, Founder and Managing Director, Winsome IP Solutions Ltd. delivered an expert lecture on “Technology Landscaping and White Space Analysis”. Dr. Nagpal delineated the current scenario and importance of protecting intellectual property in today’s fast paced technological research. He highlighted the roadmap about how an innovative research idea can be monetized into a successful technology if necessary and timely attention is paid in protecting the IP rights. Prof. GR Chaudhary, Director, SAIF/CIL encouraged the students to pursue a holistic approach in doing translational research which is not just confined in the labs but can reach out to the large masses.

The lecture was followed by a poster making competition, coordinated by Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden Boys Hostel 1, on the theme “Impact of Technology in Daily Life” where a good number of MSc and PhD students participated. Dean Student welfare, Prof. Jagtar Singh awarded best poster prizes to Alka, Aman Mittal, Annu, Dhriti Bragta, Pallavi Narania and Ishneet Kaur. Dr. Ramesh Sharma, Coordinator of the event, thanked all the guests, faculty members, students and staff of SAIF/CIL for their participation and cooperation in organizing the event.

Expert Talk organized by Institution Innovation Council-ECE, UIET on National Technology Day

Expert talk on ‘Start up and IP Management Aspects’ was organized by Electronics & Communication Engineering branch of U.I.E.T. Panjab University, Chandigarh, under the Institution’s Innovation Council (IIC) program of Ministry of Education. Dr. Naresh Kumar, Coordinator E.C.E. welcomed Dr. Harsh Vardhan Samalia, Associate Professor, N.I.T.T.T.R. Chandigarh, who acted as resource person on this occasion. Dr. Harsh Vardhan discussed the challenges and opportunities for start up and how Intellectual Property can play an important role in the growth of a start-up in terms of product manufacturing, services and revenue generation. His talk was informative and interactive. The audience posed a lot of queries which were answered by Dr. Harsh citing examples from Zomato, Uber, Facebook etc. He also discussed the various strategies applied by different reputed companies and some new start-ups to establish themselves in the market. More than 70 students from B.E.(E.C.E.) and M.E.(E.C.E.) attended the event. Students found the talk very informative, interesting and interactive.
