World Environment Day Celebrated at UIFT & VD

The department of UIFT celebrated World Environment Day by adopting baby plants, which were planted around the department premises. The Chairperson, Dr. Anu H. Gupta felt the students had to be awakened to this need of realising our onus towards the environment we inhabit. Ms. Kirti along with the students and faculty members took the responsibility of locating spaces for the new plants to grow and expand. Each plantation done today is a gesture of our little step towards saving our planet from the exploitations we continue to engage in.

पंजाब विस्वविद्यालय, चंडीगढ़ में विश्व पर्यावरण दिवस के उपलक्ष में 6 जून से 8 जून के बीच में मनाए जा रहे तीन दिवसीय विशेष कार्यक्रम के पहले दिन एन.एस.एस के सभी स्वयं सेवकों ने पंजाब यूनिवर्सिटी में अलग अलग स्थानों पर सफाई अभियान की शुरुवात की।

 इस दौरान सभी स्वयं सेवकों ने रास्ते में जाते हुए सभी छात्रों को भी यह संदेश  दिया की हमें अपने आस पास हमेशा साफ सफाई रखनी चहिए ताकि हम विभिन्न तरह की भयंकर बिमारियो से बच सके।

 इस अवसर पर यूनिवर्सिटी स्कूल ऑफ़ ओपन लर्निंग की विभागाध्यक्ष प्रो. मधुरिमा वर्मा ने सभी स्वयं सेवकों को सम्बोधित करते हुए उनके कार्य की सरहाना की और सभी को प्रेरित करते हुए कहा कि हमें इसी तरह से आगे भी स्वच्छता से संबंधित कार्यक्रमों को जारी रखना है ताकि हमारा भारत देश पूरी तरह से स्वच्छ बन सके और विश्व स्तर पर भारत की विषेश पहचान बन पाए। इस कार्यक्रम में यू.आई.ई.टी से सीनेट मेंबर डॉ. प्रवीन गोयल भी मौजूद रहे।

  •  उन्होंने सभी स्वयं सेवकों के इस स्वछता अभियान की प्रशंसा की और पर्यावरण बचाव को लेकर अपने विचार रखे।
  •  यह तीन दिवसीय विशेष कार्यक्रम एन.एस.एस की कार्यक्रम अधिकारी डॉ. रिचा शर्मा के नेतृत्व में चल रहा है।
  •  उन्होंने बताया की यह कार्यक्रम तीन दिन चलेगा और प्रत्येक दिन अलग अलग तरह की  गतिविधियों का अयोजन किया जाएगा।
  •  इस अवसर पर स्टाफ के अन्य सदस्यों ने भी स्वयं सेवकों को स्वच्छता के लिए प्रेरित किया।

PU Dept. organized Webinar on “Research and the world of citations”

The Department of Library and Information Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh, successfully organied webinar today (i.e., June 6th, 2022) through online mode. Dr. Shiv Kumar, Chairperson of the department initiated the webinar welcoming resource person and participants. Prof. Preeti Mahajan, Coordinator of today’s webinar introduced the Resource Person and theme of the webinar. Prof. Nirmal Kumar Swain, Resource Person, from Department of Library and Information Science, Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana delivered the talk on “Research and the world of citations”. Prof. Swain highlighted the significance of citations in academic writing.

He said that every source used in academic writing must be cited in order to uphold intellectual honesty (or avoiding plagiarism), to acknowledge or give credit to other people’s work, to allow the reader to determine independently whether the referenced material supports the author’s argument in the claimed way, and to help the reader gauge the strength and validity of the material the author has used. He deliberated on the circumstances during the writing process on what to cite, when to cite and when not to cite. He suggested that less number of cited documents should be used except the matter, which genuinely supports or corroborate our research.Today’s webinar was attended by 85 participants from all over the country. Dr. Khushpreet Singh Brar, Co- coordinator of today’s webinar presented vote of thanks.

Remote Operation Center for the USA based Experiment established at PU

Head of International Co-Operation, DST, Govt. Of India, S. K. Varshney inaugurated the Remote Operation Center (ROC) at Panjab University (PU) for the NOvA Experiment at Fermilab, USA on Saturday, 4th June 2022. This is the only and the first one of this kind in the entire country!  Prof. Sudhir Kumar, Director R&D Cell, Panjab University was the Guest of Honor for the event. Shri Varshney was accompanied by Shri Gaurav Aggarwal, Scientist “F” at DST. The inaugural ceremony took place in a hybrid mode. The Chairperson of the department, members of Experimental High Energy Physics group and various other dignitaries were present physically whereas members from other institutes of Indian Institues Fermilab Collaboration (IIFC) joined the event remotely. The group at PU is involved in extremely intriguing research programs as a part of various experiments at leading international collaborations such as CMS at CERN, NOvA and DUNE at Fermilab. Being one of the nine Indian institutes under the umbrella of IIFC-Neutrino Program, this ROC for the NOvA experiment will cater to all the Indian collabortors. The ROC-India is the only such center for NOvA experiment in the whole region of Asia.

From hardware upgrade to creating secure connections to Fermilab everything has been done by the members of the PU EHEP group. This ROC will support the NOvA experiment, located 11,700 km away, in data-taking operations, remote monitoring of the NovA detector system. With this accomplishment, the group at PU has acquired expertise in setting up Remote Operation Centres.

The  dignitries and the delegate visited all the detector hardware research labs in the department including the cyclotron. The inauguration was followed by an interaction with the Ph.D. Scholars of the EHEP group and the Chief Guests enlightened them by giving tips on being an effiecient researcher. This whole effort is supported and funded by DST, Govt of India as part of the Rs. 1.8 Crore grant sanctioned to the group as reported by Prof. Vipin Bhatnagar, Project Coordinator.

Dr. Ali Abbas takes over as Chairperson of Urdu Department

Dr. Ali Abbas took over as Chairperson of Urdu department of the Panjab University here today.

Earlier, for the last eight years D.U.I. has been officiating as Chairperson of the Urdu Department.

Born on 02nd March 1980 Dr. Ali Abbas did his M.A in Urdu literature from the Lucknow University and completed his Ph.D under the guidance of noted Urdu Scholar Prof. Anis Ashfaq of the Lucknow University.

Dr. Ali Abbas joined the Urdu department as Assistant Professor on 06th June 2014 and the very next year was made Coordinator of the department.


Dr. Ali Abbas is a prolific writer and has a number of research papers and books to his credit. His research papers published in the national and international magazines are highly appreciated. Thesis for Ph.D India and foreign Universities are coming to him for evaluation at regular intervals.

Curtain Raiser for Shears & Ruban 2022

The Department of University Institute of Fashion and Technology, Panjab University, Chandigarh(UIFT) will be holding a curtain raiser on the 7th June 2022 at 12:00 p.m., in our department lab to welcome each one, to the much awaited Annual Design Collection Shears and Ruban 2022, of the B.Sc. Semester 6th students. The collection is being introduced with an invitation in pink, as a call to prosperity post Covid, and the Fashion Show to be held on the 10th of June at 5:30 p.m.

The show Shears & Ruban 2022 will be graced by the presence of Honourable Vice Chancellor, Prof. Raj Kumar and the Guest of Honour Ms. Shalini Kahlon, an Entrepreneur and Lifestyle Designer. The collection will be a splash of creativity, where one may witness a range of styles, borne out of different ideas.

One of the student, Rajvinder’s collection is inspired by the Mystical sense of awe, fascination and mystery. Manifested through the use of bead, sequin, colours, layers of organza she captures the shapes of the butterfly, sand balls, ripples and waves. Aditi’s collection has experimented on the blissful transformations of colours that take place in nature, and so does her garments transform from one design to another in an aesthetic appeal. Bhupinder’s collection is inspired by the movement of water trickling down giving shape and dimension to his garments. Jasmeet has added a different dimension to kid’s wear with a pomp of bright colour dyed in large silhouette of flowers. Union Home Minister lays the foundation stone of three development projects worth Rs. 2366 crore

Union Home Minister, Amit Shah while attending the opening ceremony of the fourth edition of the Khelo India Youth Games-2021 held at Tau Devi Lal Stadium, Panchkula today laid the foundation stone of three pivotal development projects costing Rs. 2366 crore.
The list of the projects includes two medical colleges in Yamunanagar and Kaithal districts to be constructed at a cost of Rs. 1942 crore. Besides this, the Union Home Minister also laid the foundation stone for the construction of raw water supply channel by Haryana to the 2800 MW Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana at an estimated cost of Rs. 394 crore.

Thanking the Union Minister for laying the foundation stones of these three pivotal development projects, the Chief Minister, Sh. Manohar Lal said that with the construction of Shri Guru Tegh Bahadur Sahib Government Medical College, Yamunanagar to be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 997 crores and Government Medical College, Kaithal to be built at an estimated cost of Rs. 945 crores, State Government’s vision of providing best health services to the common man will soon be realized.

“Both the Centre as well as the State Government have taken several health initiatives for the citizens while working on the Mantra of ‘Sarve Bhavantu Sukhinah,” said, CM. Manohar Lal.

Every district to have one Medical College by 2025

The Chief Minister said that from health perspective dedicated steps are being taken by the State Government.  Recruitment of specialized doctors along with strengthening the health infrastructures is being ensured. Besides this, the State Government has also set a target of opening one Medical College in every district by 2025, he added.

“When our government was formed in 2014, the number of MBBS seats in Haryana was only 750. With the opening of new medical colleges, now these seats have become 1600 and when more medical colleges like these two mentioned above will open in each district, then these seats will go up to 2900. With this, there will be no shortage of doctors in the state,” said CM. Manohar Lal.

He said that dedicated efforts are being made to ensure every family gets state-of-the-art health facilities.
Nuclear Power Plant to Usher in Opening of New Vistas of Development

The Chief Minister while thanking the Union Home Minister for laying the foundation stone of the construction of the raw water supply channel by Haryana to the 2800 MW Gorakhpur Haryana Anu Vidyut Pariyojana at an estimated cost of Rs. 394 crore said that this Nuclear Power Plant will Usher in Opening of New Vistas of Development.

“The Gorakhpur Anu Vidyut Pariyojana is an ambitious initiative of the Central Government.  This plant will generate 2800 MW of electricity, out of which 1400 MW will be supplied to the people of Haryana state. With the commissioning of this plant, smooth electricity supply will be ensured to the people of Haryana,” said CM. Manohar Lal.

The Chief Minister said that with the installation of the nuclear plant, the identity of the village Gorakhpur will be established on the international stage. The residents of the surrounding area where the said plant would be set up will not only get ample employment but it will also bring about economic prosperity for the entire State.

Selection of right person at right place can solve unemployment problem in India

Chadha the alumni of psychology department of Panjab University Chandigarh Retired Joint Director of Employment Directorate, Govt of Haryana has conducted a workshop on  “Careers in Psychology” The expert Panel comprised of Dr. D.S. Parrmar, Retired Joint Director of Employment Directorate, Govt of Haryana, both has been conducted a workshop for  psychology students. After the Corona the students were very uncertain about their careers.
Dr. Roshan Lal Chairperson of Psychology department Panjab University, Chandigarh welcomed and introduces the speakers and shared that career counseling at right time help the students to make right career.

Dr. S S Chadha shared that Un-Employment is not the problem but the problem is between agencies that they don’t know where the right talent is available and students don’t know as per their talent where the vacancy is vacant. So there is a gap and such gap can be filled by giving right career counseling at right time.
Dr. D.S. Parmar said today’s counselors are just providing occupational information because majority of our students are studying to get job or to go for good marriage. So, the Government must work for Right guidance with right career counseling and opening of Modern Schools or giving laptop free to the students will not resolve all such problems to choose the right career.

Further added that India is having a list of 35000 occupation consisting of lack of adequate information and could not reached up to the masses while USA is having 40 thousands  occupation very much commonly known at every levels with full of information. In Chandigarh around 87 school counselors are working but still school students are not getting right career counseling as majority of them may be untrained or involved with some other assignments.

Psychology Department also organized Global Virtual Conclave (online) in which Dr N.K. Chadha (Prof Emeritus) based at USA has guided the students for RESUME WRITING and Interview Skills. He suggested that the resume of the student must be self explanatory because it reflects the worth and qualities of students. He shared very valuable inputs to write an impressive resume and how to face the interview.

Dr. Pankhuri Aggarwal from Miami University, USA, also enlightened the students about scope of psychology in USA, she mentioned that there is huge scope of psychology in USA because psychology is considered in Medical field and psychologists or counselors are contributing a lot to the society in USA and all they are well settled and happy with their profession. Dr. Pankhudi further shared that in India especially in rural or non elite class the concept of psychological consultation is just negligible where as in USA all people are well benefited with psychological services.

Dr, H.K Chhabra Professor of Psychology proposed vote of thanks and shared that aptitude testing should be made compulsory at 9th and 10 levels in every schools and further suggested that Department of psychology should take a lead to mediate with Chandigarh Administration for extending career counseling in schools and Dept of Psychology, Panjab University can be the Nodal agency.

 Workshop on Spade Art Organized For Visually Impaired Residents by GH-2

A workshop on spade art was organized for visually impaired students  by Laxmibai Hall (GH-2) , Panjab University in collaboration with social substance club on 31.05.2022. The resource person for the event was Ms.Puneet Madan who is a world renowned artist, a record holder, recipient of many awards and recently awarded “The Michel Angelo Award-2022” for outstanding art work. The workshop began with an introduction about using of spade and the type of colours that can be used in this art form. The students were also given information about various types of strokes and the effects that can be created. The special emphasis of this workshop was to engage visually impaired residents and involve other residents with them. The residents of Laxmibai hall actively participated in this workshop and worked along with the visually impaired students in learning this art.

मैंगलोर यूनिवर्सिटी का फैसला, हिजाब पहन कर आने पर क्लास नहीं : दूसरी जगह एडमिशन चाहिए तो मिलेगी मदद

कॉलेज में हिजाब पहनने और न पहनने दोनों को लेकर विरोध प्रदर्शन हुए। एक तरफ मुस्लिम छात्राएं अपनी शिकायत लेकर वाइस चांसलर और जिला कलेक्टर के पास पहुंची तो वहीं एबीवीपी ने भी हिजाब पर पूर्ण बैन लगाने की मांग की। मुस्लिम छात्राओं के लगातार हिजाब पहनकर कॉलेज आने को लेकर एबीवीपी समर्थित छात्र संगठनों ने इसका विरोध किया प्रदर्शन कर गुस्सा दिखाया। इन छात्र-छात्राओं का कहना है कि हाईकोर्ट के फैसले के बाद भी मुस्लिम छात्राएं हिजाब पहनकर कॉलेज आ रही हैं और कॉलेज प्रशासन इस पर कोई ऐतराज नहीं जता रहा है। इस बात से नाराज छात्रों ने ऐलान किया कि ये हरकत बंद नहीं हुई तो हम लोग भी केसरिया साफा पहनकर कॉलेज में इसका विरोध दर्ज कराएंगे।

मंगलौर(ब्यूरो), डेमोक्रेटिक फ्रंट (कर्नाटक) :  

दक्षिण कन्नड़ जिले के एक कॉलेज के अधिकारियों ने शनिवार को हिजाब पहनकर आई छात्राओं को वापस घर भेज दिया। कर्नाटक के शिक्षा मंत्री बी. सी. नागेश की ओर से यह बयान देने के बाद कि कक्षाओं के अंदर केवल वर्दी पहनने वाले छात्रों को ही अनुमति है, यह फैसला लिया गया है। घटना मंगलौर के यूनिवर्सिटी कॉलेज की है। इससे पहले कॉलेज ने सिंडिकेट के फैसले के तहत हिजाब पहनने पर रोक लगा दी थी। हालांकि अधिकांश मुस्लिम छात्राएं शनिवार को बिना हिजाब के कक्षाओं में शामिल हुईं, लेकिन 12 छात्राएं हिजाब पहनकर कॉलेज पहुंची थीं।

कर्नाटक में इस साल के अंत तक विधानसभा चुनाव होने हैं और प्रदेश में मलाली मंदिर मस्जिद विवाद और अब एक बार फिर कक्षाओं में हिजाब पहनने को लेकर विवाद शुरू हो गया है। हिजाब का मुद्दा गुरुवार को एक बार फिर राज्य में तब सामने आया जब मैंगलोर के यूनिवर्सिटी कॉलेज की छात्राओं के एक समूह ने कक्षाओं का बहिष्कार किया और आरोप लगाते हुए परिसर में विरोध प्रदर्शन किया। कुछ मुस्लिम छात्राएं सिर पर दुपट्टा पहनकर कक्षाओं में भाग ले रही थीं। शनिवार को हिजाब पहनकर कुछ छात्राएं कॉलेज पहुंची लेकिन प्रिंसिपल अनुसूया राय ने उन्हें अंदर प्रवेश नहीं करने दिया। इसके बाद वे लाइब्रेरी की ओर गईं लेकिन वहां भी अंदर जाने की अनुमति नहीं मिली। इसके बाद वे वापस लौट गईं।

कॉलेज प्रशासन के इस फैसले के खिलाफ छात्रों ने परिसर में धरने पर बैठकर विरोध प्रदर्शन किया था। छात्रों का कहना था कि मुस्लिम छात्राओं को कक्षा में हिजाब पहनने की अनुमति देखकर कॉलेज प्रशासन कर्नाटक हाईकोर्ट के आदेश का उल्लंघन कर रहा है।

भारी विरोध को देखते हुए कॉलेज प्रशासन ने फैसले को वापस ले लिया और कहा कि कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय के प्री-यूनिवर्सिटी कॉलेजों में हिजाब प्रतिबंध को बरकरार रखने का आदेश डिग्री कॉलेजों पर भी लागू होगा और इसलिए धार्मिक पोशाक को कक्षाओं के अंदर अनुमति नहीं दी जाएगी।

कॉलेज के VC प्रोफेसर सुब्रह्मण्य यदपादित्या ने कहा, “हमारा कॉलेज शुरू में लड़कियों को यूनिफॉर्म की रंग से मेल खाते हेडस्कार्फ़ को पहनने की अनुमति दी थी, लेकिन कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय के आदेश के मद्देनजर CDC (कॉलेज विकास परिषद) के अध्यक्ष और मैंगलोर दक्षिण निर्वाचन क्षेत्र के विधायक वेदव्यास कामथ और सिंडिकेट के सदस्यों के साथ बैठक के बाद निर्णय लिया गया है कि कक्षाओं के अंदर धार्मिक पोशाक की अनुमति नहीं होगी।”

उन्होंने कहा कि उच्च न्यायालय का आदेश डिग्री कॉलेजों पर लागू होगा या नहीं, इसको लेकर असमंजस की स्थिति थी। राज्य सरकार की एडवाइजरी, उच्च शिक्षा परिषद और कोर्ट के आदेश के मुताबिक सभी कॉलेजों को यूनिफॉर्म का पालन करना होगा। इसके बाद आदेश को वापस ले लिया गया। VC ने कहा कि छात्राएँ कैंपस में हिजाब पहन सकती हैं, लेकिन कक्षा में नहीं।

VC यदपादित्य ने हिजाब पहनने की जिद पर अड़ी मुस्लिम छात्राओं की काउंसलिंग को लेकर कहा, “हमें पता चला है कि लगभग 15 मुस्लिम लड़कियाँ क्लास में हिजाब पहनने को लेकर अड़ी हुई हैं। हम इन लड़कियों को कर्नाटक उच्च न्यायालय के आदेश के संबंध परामर्श देने के तैयार हैं। इसके बाद बाद भी वे नहीं मानती हैं तो उन्हें उन शैक्षणिक संस्थानों में प्रवेश दिलाने में हम मदद करेंगे, जहाँ हिजाब की अनुमति है या जहाँ कोई यूनिफॉर्म नहीं है।”
