One week Short-term Course on Research Methodology by UIAMS Concluded

            University Institute of Applied Management Science, Panjab University, Chandigarh concluded One week Short term course(STC) on Research Methodology. The primary focus of this course was to provide research stimulus to the academicians and researchers and to bring clarity to various statistical concepts, tools and techniques.

            The eminent experts from IIM Lucknow, Thapar University, GGSIPU Delhi, PEC Chandigarh and Panjab University gave theoretical as well as practical exposure of various statistical techniques using softwares like SPSS, EVIEWS, SMART PLS, STRATA and DEAP.

            Dr. Nishi Sharma presented the course report and Prof. Upasna Joshi welcomed the dignitaries.

            Prof. Karamjeet Singh, Registrar, Panjab University, Chandigarh during his valedictory address emphasised that STC provides platform for understanding student’s perception, skill advancement and research collaboration. He encouraged the researchers to conduct socially relevant studies.

            Prof. Keshav Malhotra, Dean Faculty of Business Management and Commerce highlighted the need of identifying and defining the research problem in an appropriate manner.

            Ms. Rachita Sambyal thanked the UIAMS fraternity and dignitaries for their enormous cooperation in the organisation of the event.

            35 faculty members and research scholars from Ambala, Chandigarh, Jalandhar, Himachal Pradesh, Haryana, Ludhiana and Patiala participated in the programme.

A 21days’ National Program on Assessment and Management of Children with Learning Disabilities

            A 21days’ National Program on Assessment and Management of Children with Learning Disabilities from 2nd to 22nd December 2019, organised by Centre for Academic Leadership and Education Management (CALEM), Department of Education, PU, Chandigarh was inaugurated on 2nd December,2019. It was initiated by Prof. Kirandeep Singh, Chairperson, Dept. of Education, PU, Chandigarh who extended a warm welcome to all the dignitaries and participants.

            Dr. Jatinder Grover (CALEM Coordinator) gave a brief introduction of CALEM. Concept note on the theme of the program was presented by Prof Raj K. Gupta (Program Coordinator). The inaugural address was presented by Prof. Karamjit Singh (Registrar, PU, Chandigarh). Keynote speaker Prof. Jayanti Pujari (Amity Institute of Rehabilitation Sciences, Noida) emphasised that role of parents is crucial in correct diagnosis, identification and certification. She stressed that parents often find it hard to accept that there is a real problem and hence most of the times they misinterpret the situation.

            In the first technical session, Prof. Jayanti Pujari informed that learning difficulties and learning disabilities  are quite different. Learning difficulties can arise due to lack of instruction, ill health, lack of language proficiency, lack of interest, inefficient teaching . While diagnosing  learning disabilities, learning difficulties must be ruled out. In the second session, Prof. Virendra Kumar (Professor Emeritus, Department of Laws, PU, Chd) deliberated upon facilities for the learning disabled as per RPWD Act, 2016. Types of learning disabilities were dealt with  by Dr. Kuldeep Kaur  from Dept. of Education, PU, Chandigarh, in the third technical session.

Two weeks Refresher Course at Dept of Hindi concluded today

            The two week refresher course for language teachers organized by UGC-Human Resource Development Centre (UGC-HRDC) and Department of Hindi, on the theme ‘ Challenges of Reclaiming Folk in Literature’ concluded today. The chief guest at the closing ceremony of the refresher course was Prof. Rajbir Singh, who is the Vice Chancellor of Maharshi Dayanand University, Rohtak, Haryana and State University of Performing Arts, Rohtak. Addressing the participants of refresher course he said that language teachers have an important role to play in the era of communication, provided they update their knowledge as per the needs of the times.

            He appreciated the theme of the refresher course and said that it was important to document the folk traditions to preserve the culture of the country. In his presidential address, UGC HRDC Honorary Director, Prof. S.K. Tomar emphasized the need of teachers to constantly have an urge to learn and be a student of the discipline. He also said that refresher courses of UGC provide this opportunity to be a student and update our knowledge and skills. Dr. Gurmeet Singh, Chairperson, Dept of Hindi, said that 27 teachers from seven states and teaching different languages participated in the course. He further informed that a total of 29 sessions were held in which 24 resource persons from different fields addressed the participants. Dr. Pratibha Kaushik, Dr. Ravinder Kaur and Dr. Chander Praksah while sharing their experiences said that besides being a knowledge enriching experience, the course has also been a memorable experience as the staff and students of Dept of Hindi also made them feel at home. Prof Rajbir and Prof. Tomar distributed the certificates to all the participants. On this occasion they also distributed cheques to the research scholars of Dept of Hindi who are working in the Earn While You Learn Scheme of the Dept.

Two Day Gala Global Alumni Event Commences at PU

Urged the Youth to be Disrupters-Sunil Arora, CEC

          ‘Coming to Alma Mater is like a pilgrimage’, said Mr. Sunil Arora, Chief Election Commissioner of India(CEC) and also Alumnus of Panjab University while addressing at the Annual Global Alumni Meet hosted by Panjab University Alumni Association(PUAA), here today at  PU. While sharing the transition of Panjab University from Lahore to the present location at Chandigarh, he shared his personal and professional links to the different institutes of PU.

          He urged the youth to be disrupters by becoming innovators and initiating start ups which is the need of the nation. He urged all to individually and collectively be part of the change to take the country to greater heights.

            While appreciating PU in organizing this Alumni Meet and
also simultaneously commemorating 3 events namely 550 years of the
Guru Nanak Dev Ji, 150 Years of Mahatma Gandhi and 100 years of PU
Honours School, said that all these events fill the gap between the
vision and its practice. The leanings from each of these metamorphosed
into movements led by these individuals who talked of things that were
much ahead of times. In their own way, each of them transcended time
and left an impact that is felt even today. He highlighted that the PU
has had the good fortune of having been nurtured by teachers and
administrators who were nothing short of Legends.

          He further added that by virtue of its history, achievements, the character of its institutions and the thread that binds it to the past, PU has both a national stature as well as international acclaim. Over the years, the University has emerged as an institution that is at the frontier of innovative teaching practices, academic research, and interdisciplinary approach.

          Mia Yen, Counsul General of Canada in Chandigarh discussed India Canada relations and emphasised the significant contribution of Indian students to the economy of Canada. She also shared her views on women empowerment, gender equality and dynamic bilateral relations. She shared that in last one year, there is an increase of trade between the two countries by 60%.

          Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University, Chandigarh in his welcome address said that this event is being organized to create a strong bond with the Alumni. This will also help to revive all Alumni Chapters spread all over India and the ones established overseas. He said that he is looking forward to people gathered here to reconnect and relive their moments and be the Ambassadors of PU.

          Eight PU achievers Sunil Arora, Harit Nagpal, Ambassador Prof. Paramjit Sahai, Prof. Balram Gupta, Dr. Jaspreet S. Dhau, Dr. Arun Arora, Mrs Keshni Anand Arora, Harish Chander Sharma and Dr. Gambhir were honoured during the event.

          Prof. Deepti Gupta, Dean Alumni Relations and Secretary of PUAA informed about various events being planned for the 2 days event for the Alumni. This reunion ignited the memories of past days among all the alumni members, she added.

          Mr. Sunil Arora, CEC visited Boys Hostel No. 1, PU where he stayed for few months with his brother for the preparation of administrative services. He said that visit to his hostel filled him with nostalgia which has taken him back to his student life. He inaugurated Wall of Alumni in the Common Room of BH-1 which had pictures of ex-residents who achieved distinguished position in their life like Lt. Captain Vikram Batra (Martyr), Naunihal Singh (Inspector General of Police, Punjab), Lt. Vikas Kundu (Indian Army), Pawan Kumar (Crime Branch, Chandigarh Police), Malwinder Kang (B.J.P Spokesperson, Punjab State), Dr. Manoj Kumar Teotia (CRRID, Chandigarh), Kuljeet Singh Nagra (M.L.A. from Fatehgarh Assembly, Punjab), Anmol Rattan Sidhu ( Addl. Solicitor General of India). Prof. Emanual Nahar, Dean Student Welfare(DSW) and Prof. Neena Capalash, DSW(W), Dr. Rajeev Kumar, Warden, Boys Hostel No. 1 and all other Wardens of Boys and Girls Hostels were present on the occasion.

           A  first ever Hostel Magazine of Boys Hostel No. 3, connecting residents and the Hostel Alumni, was launched during the event. It carries memorable moments of the residents and the alumni visiting the hostels time to time during the year.  This was published under the supervison of Dr. Sanjeev Gautam as editor-in-chief and Sh. Saransh Fazilka as Editor.

          There was a ‘Fire Side Chat on Brand Building for Higher Education Institutes’ by Dr. Sandeep Goyal, an advertising Veteran and Mr. Harit Nagpal, CEO, Tata Sky.

          The day 1 of the event concluded with a Light, Sound and Sight show on Guru Nanak Devji and the lighting of lanterns and lamps marking 100 years of the Panjab University Honours School.

          Large number of PU Alumni, PU Fellows, Former VCs, Dignitories from the City, Chairpersons, PU Officials, Faculty and students were present on the occasion.

          Mr. Arora made a courtesy visit at the residence of Mr. R.S.Bawa, former Principal of Government College, Hoshiarpur who was teacher of his elder brother and brother in law.

One Week Short Term Course on Research Methodology inaugurated at UIAMS

            University Institute of Applied Management Science (UIAMS), Panjab University inaugurated one week Short Term Course on Research Methodology. The course will be conducted from 27th November – 3rd December 2019. Thirty-five faculty members and research scholars from various institutions joined the course. The course intends to hone the skills of the participants for practical application of various statistical tools frequently used for solving research problems.

            Prof Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor, Panjab University addressed the participants and highlighted the importance of selection of research problem, selection of good institution and selection of appropriate supervisor for conducting good research work. He appreciated the theme of the programme and congratulated UIAMS for conducting the same.

            Prof. Sanjay Kaushik, Dean College Development Council, Panjab University emphasised upon meaningful research. He highlighted the importance of formulation of right objectives and selection of appropriate methodology to attain the same. Prof. Upasna Joshi Sethi, Director, UIAMS welcomed the participants and apprised them about the course structure. The dignitaries wished all success to the participants and organisers.

CFA donate almirahs and stools to red cross sarai

Korel,Chandigarh, 27th November 2019:

The Chandigarh Furniture Association (Regd.), Chandigarh has donated 15 Steel Almirah and 100 plastic stool at Red Cross Sarai as a part of CSR in the presence of Sh. Sachin Rana IAS, Additional Deputy Commissioner, U.T. Chandigarh and Secretary, Red Cross Society, Chandigarh today .

The Indian Red Cross Society is running Infosys Foundation Red Cross Sarai at PGIMER, Chandigarh with the capacity of 300 beds. The patients/attendants stay in the Sarai during the medical treatment of patients in PGIMER, Chandigarh on nominal charges.The Infosys Red Cross Sarai building has been constructed by the Infosys Foundation and other infrastructure have been arranged through different philanthropists.

PU Student Centre Pond decorated with Graffiti

Korel, Chandigarh November 25, 2019

            On the recommendations of the Committee constituted by Prof. Raj Kumar, Vice Chancellor under the Chairmanship of Prof. Harsh Nayyar, Department of Botany to assist Horticulture Division for making graffiti at the Student Centre pond. The necessary help by the Deptt. of Arts History & Visual Arts, PU was provided and a graffiti workshop was organised in collaboration with Horticulture Division on 23-24 November, 2019.

            The Horticulture Division provided the material for the workshop and prepared the background for conducting the workshop by cleaning the area including the minor repairs of the pond and removing the wild growth. The walls of the pond were filled with the required material by the Horticulture Division for making the surface smooth so that the graffiti should look impressive. All the material as requested by the Deptt. of Arts History & Visual Arts like paints, brushes, papers, stainers of different colours, spray paints etc. were supplied by the Horticulture Division.

            About 25 participants (students) displayed their skills in the workshop. They were served lunch and refreshments by the Horticulture Division. Their paintings depicted the message of cleanliness in the Campus through cartoon and other means. Due care was taken that the graffiti should focus on the theme of cleanliness and banning the use of plastic in the Campus. Due care was also taken that the banned items of single use plastic like disposable plates, cups etc. were not used during the workshop.

UBS ranked 18 by Outlook-ICARE India Rankings 2020

            University Business School (UBS), Panjab University, Chandigarh has been ranked 18 in the Top Public MBA Institutions of India by the Outlook-ICARE India Rankings 2020 released recently.

            UBS offers two year MBA, MBA (Entrepreneurship), MBA (Human Resources) & MBA (International Business) admission for which is undertaken through CAT conducted by the IIMs.  In addition, a MBAfEX (Two Year) program is offered at UBS admission for which is through an Entrance Test conducted by the Panjab University.

            Prof. Deepak Kapur, Chairperson-UBS, while congratulating the UBS Faculty, Staff & students said that it is the result of combined efforts of all for this achievement. He urged all to carry on with the same vigour for taking the departments to greater heights.

Reunion at Dr. SSBUICET, PU

Korel, Chandigarh November 25, 2019

            A reunion for the Batch of 1978, Dr. S. S. Bhatnagar University Institute of Chemical Engineering & Technology Panjab University Chandigarh (SSBUICET) was organized in Boys Hostel 3 of the University. 

            The class of 1978 revisited the Campus, 40 years after graduating and shared their experiences with the present students of the department. They expressed their gratitude for their achievements to the department, which was there learning base. Alumnus from India and abroad were present on the occasion apart from faculty of that time.

            The present Alumnus deliberated on the issue of renovation of the classrooms and labs of the department including the funds to be involved for the same. It is noteworthy that the Chemical Engineering Department building is the first building to be constructed in the University and holds heritage value.

            The meet ended on a good note with photo sessions, felicitations and nostalgia when Alumnus visited their old hostel rooms.
