An Eye for An Eye Makes A Blink

        Dr.Dhananjay Arora, Post Graduate Student , in the Department of Prosthodontics, Dr.Harvansh Singh Judge Institute of Dental Sciences,Panjab University has bagged 1st prize in the seasonal event and 2nd prize overall under the table clinic category, at the National Post Graduate Student Prosthodontic Society Convention, held at Ahmedabad, from 5th -7th of April 2019.

        He designed a working prototype of a blinking eye prosthesis which can be given in patients with eye defects either due to trauma, infection or cancer surgeries. The prototype not only blinks and gives a life like appearance but also helps in reducing the vibrations and sound which can be a cause of deafness if applied likewise to the patients. The eye prosthesis makes use of silicone and acrylic 3D printed mount, along with machinery comprising of motor and chipset powered by rechargeable batteries all within the prosthesis.

        According to the Department Head, Dr.ShefaliSingla, further research will be focused on reducing the assembly size and sensors for controlling frequency of blinking so as to give a controllable life like artificial eye prosthesis.
