To save 20 Billion units annually ministry suggests to keep AC temperature at 24 to 26 degrees

The power ministry is considering making the default temperature setting for air conditioners at 24 degrees Celsius. Power Minister R K Singh, during a meeting on Friday, said the mandate will benefit consumers, both from a health and financial point of view. The ministry also wants AC manufacturers to add a label on the product indicating the optimum temperature setting for consumers. If the move is approved, it is likely to come into effect in a few months.

The ministry’s suggestion comes based on recommendations in a study conducted by the Bureau of Energy Efficiency (BEE). Its report suggests temperature settings to be in the range of 24 to 26 degree Celsius.

According to the ministry, the higher the temperature of the air conditioner, the lesser electricity consumed. This translates to saving at least six per cent of electricity consumed with an increase of just one degree in temperature. Singh explained, “Every one-degree increase in the air-conditioner temperature setting results in saving of 6 per cent of electricity consumed.”

Further, the minister said it is both uncomfortable and unhealthy to be in colder temperatures. “The normal human body temperature is approximately 36-37 degrees Celsius, but a large number of commercial establishments maintain a temperature around 18-21 degrees Celsius. This is not only uncomfortable but is actually unhealthy,” Singh said. He pointed out that wearing warm clothing or using blankets in a colder temperature is a waste of energy.

Singh’s campaign, which promotes energy efficiency, is likely to result in substantial energy savings and reduce greenhouse gas emission.

According to BEE, only six per cent of households in the country use air conditioners. If all consumers adopt a default temperature setting, India could save 20 billion units of electricity annually.

The report states that the current estimate total installed air conditioner capacity is 80 million TR (tonne of refrigerator), which is likely to increase to nearly 250 million TR by 2030. Taking into account the huge demand, India can save around 40 million units of electricity usage per day.

he move towards making the default setting on air conditioners 24 degree Celsius will begin by issuing an advisory to all establishments and manufacturers, particularly airports, hotels, shopping malls, offices and government buildings. This will be followed by an awareness campaign, held over four to six months. The ministry will then gather feedback from the public before mandating a default setting.

This practice is followed in other countries, such as in Japan, where the government has regulated temperatures at 28 degree Celsius.

Know your number

Over the centuries planets have been believed to govern the individuals’ mind and body as well as their own character. Also specific traits or factors such as thinking behavior, health education, prejudice, likes, dislikes, aptitude for a particular profession or vocation are decided according to the effects of the  principal planet.

Since the study of astrology is based on mathematics, we can expect a higher degree of accuracy in determining the result.

Number Planet Basic characteristics of individual
1 Sun Individualistic, determined, proud, dominating, authoritative, confident, showy, aspiring , research oriented.
2 Moon Emotional, companionable, restless, impatient, whimsical, introvert.
3 Jupiter  Honorable, dignified, philosophical, ambitious, vain, dictatorial.
4 Uranus Zealous, revolutionary, active, enduring, stubborn.
5 Mercury Shrewd, calculating, vigilant, business like, cooperative, skeptical unreliable.
6 Venus  Artful, moody, loving,  sympathetic, docile, strong memory
7 Neptune Austere, tolerant, peaceful, systematic, restless, research oriented, whimsical.
8 Saturn Authoritative, methodical, steady, systematic, lazy, cynical, nervous, lazy, delay prone.
9 Mars Energetic, active, hot tempered, dashing, courageous, impatient, quarrelsome, destructive.

One may well ask the highly relevant question: What about the thousands of babies born on same day and date over the world have the identical destinies? The answer is definitely no, because of varied latitudes and longitudes. Here we can say that numerological study can upto 60 percent  ascertain the individual’s characters from birth date alone.

According to numerology each number is believed to be governed by a planet. Each planet exhibits certain specific characteristics which are reflected in the number that each planet governs.

I m starting a series on numerology and hope the readers will understand the law of nature which influence human life.

Swiggy raised $210 million of investments

Swiggy raised $210 million from a group of investors, catapulting India’s largest food delivery service provider into a select club of startup unicorns with a valuation of $1 billion or more. The latest funding, led by Naspers and billionaire Yuri Milner’s DST Global, values Swiggy at roughly $1.3 billion, surpassing rival Zomato’s $1.1 billion valuation based on a February fund-raising round. China’s Meituan-Dianping has also invested in the latest funding round, along with new investor Coatue Management.

Swiggy, founded in August 2014, is one of the fastest entrants into the unicorn club. The latest fund-raising will add pressure on Zomato to raise additional funds quickly to keep pace with its Bengaluru-based rival in the online food-delivery business.  On 2 April that Zomato was in talks to raise $200-400 million.

Swiggy, which has emerged as the breakout consumer internet start-up of the past five years, has easily been the most prolific food delivery start-up in terms of its ability to continue raising funds from deep-pocketed foreign investors. It has raised about $465 million till date, according to Mint research. Barely four months ago, Swiggy raised $100 million from South African media giant Naspers.

Swiggy, which is by far India’s best-funded food delivery start-up, plans to use the funds to ramp up its supply-chain network and expand to new markets, the company said in a statement.

“With this investment, we will continue to widen Swiggy’s offerings, along with bolstering our capabilities and plugging the gaps in the on-demand delivery ecosystem,” said Sriharsha Majety, CEO and co-founder of Swiggy.

Mint had first reported on 2 April that both Swiggy and Zomato were in talks to raise more money. In early February, Zomato raised $150 million from Ant Small and Micro Financial Services Group, valuing the food-tech start-up at about $1.1 billion.

Swiggy, which operates in 15 cities including Bengaluru, Delhi, Mumbai, Pune, Hyderabad and Kolkata, claims to have more than 35,000 restaurant partners on its platform and a delivery fleet of over 40,000.

Founded by Majety, Nandan Reddy and Rahul Jaimini, Swiggy is one of the few consumer internet start-ups from 2014 that is thriving and consistently chased by large global investors. Smaller peers such as food-ordering app TinyOwl, grocery-ordering app PepperTap and real estate platform Housing.com have either been shut down or sold in distress deals. Some others, such as online grocery start-up Grofers, are struggling to attract new investors and have been unable to find a sustainable long-term business model.

Damaged : India’s first show about a female serial killer

India has seen an explosive growth in digital shows in the recent past. Honestly, there is no dearth of content on the Internet, however, most of these shows follow similar themes and stick to tested genres. Finding a show that is different and still checks all the right boxes can be a little difficult. Damaged, Hungama’s first original show, hence, comes as a breath of fresh air. Not only is the show an absorbing psychological crime drama – a genre that is extremely under-explored in India, but is also the first time that we see a woman playing a serial killer and being well, quite literally, the person of interest. Here we tell you why exactly this show deserves the top spot on your watch list.

Unprecedented Theme

Damaged ventures into a territory which is quite bold for a digital show in the country. A story like this could have very well translated into another murder mystery or crime thriller, but the makers have given the show a unique execution. As a psychological crime drama, it dives into the mind of the serial killer, explains what made her who she is and makes us follow the twists and turns of her life. It makes us see the world from her eyes and gets us to understand her perspective. In terms of freshness and originality, the show emerges triumphant.

Damaged starts where most other murder stories end. We are introduced to Lovina ( Amruta Khanvilkar) – an otherwise ordinary woman, someone we think we could be friends with or maybe even fall in love with. And then almost immediately, in one of the most artistically shot murder scenes, we realize we couldn’t be more wrong. One would think that revealing the identity of the killer so early on in the show could make us lose interest, but instead it just piques it. Because once the cops get a whiff of the murders, we are served one of the most tactfully written battle of wits between our femme fatale and the cops, led by Abhay (Amit Sial).

An interesting point about the show – nobody in the show is perfect; everybody, including the cops operate on the fringes of good and evil. Hence, it avoids falling into the clichéd trap of forcing the viewers to take sides.

Exemplary performances

We have seen Amruta Khanvilkar play a variety of roles in Hindi and Marathi films, however, this role is the polar opposite of whatever she has done so far. Amruta probably took up a mighty challenge, but by the end of the show it is hard to imagine any other actor who could played Lovina better.

Amit Sial as Abhay has an equally challenging role. Traditionally, we are taught to root for the cops who are solving a murder case, however, Abhay not only makes it difficult, but nearly impossible to like him, and kudos to Amit for succeeding in doing this job.

Direction and Pacing

Director Aarambhh Mohan Singh keeps the viewers hooked on to the series – there is never a dull moment and not a single scene out of place. Everything leads to a dramatic build-up and a riveting confrontation. He has given a gritty drama an aesthetic appeal that you rarely see on the digital medium.

If these weren’t enough reasons to catch the series, the trailer of Damaged sure gives us another reason to recommend the show.

The show is available now on Hungama Play.

Now this is what we call “INTOLERANCE”

Pakistani newspaper Dawn has been facing disruptions in its circulation in “targeted cities and towns” for the past month ahead of the July general election, its management saidin a statement on Tuesday.

The management of Pakistan’s oldest newspaper has also alleged that vans and hawkers distributing its copies have been denied entry to cantonment areas for “several months” and government officials in parts of Sindh, Punjab, and Balochistan are now also stopping them from delivering copies to regular subscribers ahead of the 25 July polls.

“Multiple reports are also coming in of officials posted in many cities and towns in Punjab, arbitrarily summoning newspaper agents, hawkers and salesmen, and warning them not to distribute copies of Dawn, threatening them with consequences if disobeyed,” it added.

Calling attempts to forcibly deny newspaper access to the citizens a “categorical violation of the Article 19”, Dawn urged caretaker prime minister Nasirul Mulk, Chief of Army Staff General Qamar Bajwa and Chief Justice of Pakistan Mian Saqib Nisar to take strong notice “without any further delay of this hostile situation”.

‘Cannot withstand an engineered election’

In Pakistan, Article 19 of the Constitution grants its citizens the right to freedom of speech and expression, and the freedom of the press. This freedom is subject to any “reasonable restrictions imposed by law in the interest of the glory of Islam or the integrity, security or defence of Pakistan or any part thereof friendly relations with foreign States, public order, decency or morality, or in relation to contempt of court, (commission of) or incitement to an offence.”

He added that if this campaign continued, the holding “free, fair and just elections” will become next to impossible. “Let such forces be warned that the social and political fibre of Pakistani society and the polarisation within the Federation cannot withstand an engineered election,” he said.

The background

In May, several reports stated that copies of Dawn “vanished” from Balochistan. It was reported then that the distributors were told to stop its circulation because the newspaper was ‘pro-Nawaz Sharif’.

On 12 May,

dawn published an interview with the former prime minister which purportedly did not go down well with the Pakistan’s military establishment; Nawaz questioned the military’s commitment to curbing terrorism. “Militant organisations are active. Call them non-State actors, should we allow them to cross the border and kill 150 people in Mumbai (2008 attack)? Explain it to me. Why can’t we complete the trial?” Sharif asked in the interview.

The Pakistan Army enjoys considerable influence over policy decisions in Pakistan and has virtually ruled the country for much of its life since it gained independence 70 years ago.

Following the Dawn interview, the Press Council of Pakistan notified the newspaper’s editor that the publication has breached the ethical code. Media watchdog Reporters Without Borders lashed out at the authorities over the reports of blocking of Dawn’s circulation. “It is clear that the military high command does not want to allow a democratic debate in the months preceding a general election,” it said in a statement.

Other media organisations cry censorship

Apart from Dawn, journalists and other media organisations have claimed censorship and acts threatening their freedom ahead of the July election.

On 6 June, senior journalist Gul Bukhari — known for her criticism of the Pakistan Army — was abducted for several hours while on her way to record a TV programme late at nightAnother journalist Asad Kharal was physically assaulted in Lahore the same day.

In April, Geo News was blocked in many parts of Pakistan. Reports claimed that cable operators were being forced to suspend the channel on orders of the Pakistan military.

Media watchdogs such as Amnesty and International Press Institute (IPI) expressed their concerns over these incidents.

“These actions deny the public’s fundamental right to receive news and information and to participate in informed debate about matters of public interest, in particular the military’s role in civilian affairs”, IPI executive director Barbara Trionfi said in a letter sent to Mulk, Nisar, Chief Election Commissioner Sardar Muhammad Raza, Senate chairman Muhammad Sadiq Sanjrani, and the Leader of Opposition Sherry Rehman.

Amnesty International South Asia deputy director Dinushika Dissanayake said: “Key freedoms are under relentless attack in Pakistan, with the authorities cracking down on dissent, whether it takes place on the streets, on television news channels, in newspaper columns, or on social media.”
