13th Chandigarh Science Congress Oration lecture by Nobel Laureate Prof. Bernard Lucas Feringa Panjab University Chandigarh celebrated Platinum Jubilee of “Panjab University Pharmaceutical Sciences” in 13th Chandigarh Science Congress. Platinum Jubilee oration by Professor Ben Feringa was the main attraction of the event where he delivered his talk on “Joy of success”.  
        Professor Bernard Lucas Feringa, Nobel Laureate in Chemistry Raman Chair Professor, Indian Academy of Science, University of Groningen, The Netherlands, is a member of Royal Netherland Academy of Sciences as well as member of Council of the Royal Society of Chemistry. His research interest includes stereochemistry, organic synthesis, molecular switches, self assembly nanosystems etc. 
        In his talk, Dr. Feringa shared myriad of research areas and appreciated the human brain with the discovery of aircraft. However, he appreciated Mother Nature about the amazing science and biological machinery that we have in our body inside every cell. He added the significance of molecular motors (ATPase enzyme in body) that work for production of energy molecule (ATP) in body and millions of such motors are working in body for continuous production of fuel. He said his team is working on designing therapeutic drug that will response with light flash with optical on and off command and help in precise delivery of drug in body to combat resistance and fight tumor. His team has designed nano car that are simply light energy driven molecule made up of 95% water. These nano cars can have enormous applications like making self-cleansing glasses self-cleansing coating on cars etc. These molecular motors can be 
delivered inside body as nano robots and deliver drug, fight against various disease or perform repair work. His lab is a team of about 15 motivated Ph.D and postdoc. 
He urged the young scientists  to discover their Talent. His mantra for success is: “follow your dreams”,  “be confident”, “discover your energy”, “discover your limits”. 
He further asked the youth to know their passion and to set the bar for achieving the unknown.

Those present included Prof. Raj Kumar, PU VC, former VCs, PU fellows, Deans, Chairpersons, faculty, researchers and students.

आज भारतीय जनता पार्टी पंचकूला विधानसभा की लोकसभा चुनाव के मद्देनज़र अति महत्वपूर्ण बैठक ज़िला कार्यालय में संपन्न हुई। बैठक में मुख्य अतिथि के तौर पर जिला प्रभारी एवं प्रदेश प्रवक्ता डॉ संजय शर्मा उपस्थित रहे साथ में विशेष तौर पर पंचकूला विधायक ज्ञान चंद गुप्ता एवं प्रदेश उपाध्यक्ष श्रीमती बनतो कटारिया उपस्थित रहे।
डॉक्टर संजय शर्मा ने कार्यकर्ताओं को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि हमें हर बूथ के हर घर तक पहुंच कर एक-एक मतदाता को मोदी सरकार के किए हुए कार्यों के बारे में जानकारी देनी है। आगे उन्होंने कहा की पार्टी की मजबूती के लिए और प्रत्येक वोट को डलवाने के लिए संगठन द्वारा पन्ना प्रमुखों नियुक्ति कि जायगी। मतदाता सूची में  एक पन्ने के आगे पीछे मिलाकर 60 वोटर लगभग 15 परिवार होते हैं। हर बूथ के लगभग 60 मतदाताओं पर एक पन्ना प्रमुख लगाया जाएगा। पन्ना प्रमुख  बनाए जाने के बाद से वोटिंग वाले दिन तक यह सभी इन परिवारों के संपर्क में रहेंगे। उनका कार्य सरकार द्वारा  किए गए कार्यों की जानकारी  उन तक पहुंचाना और मतदान वाले दिन सभी मतदाता वोट डाले यह भी सुनिस्चित करना होगा। हर बूथ की वोटर लिस्ट में लगभग 15 से 20 पन्ने होते हैं जिसको देखते हुए हर बूथ पर 10 से 20 पन्ना प्रमुख बनाए जाएंगे।

विधायक ज्ञान चंद गुप्ता ने कार्यकर्ताओं को संबोधित करते हुए कहा कि पार्टी ने लोकसभा चुनाव के लिए फंड जुटाने के लिए निधि समर्पण कार्यक्रम शुरू किया है। इस चुनाव में शुचिता और पारदर्शिता लाने के लिए कार्यकर्ताओं द्वारा और अन्य लोगों द्वारा पार्टी फ़ंड के लिए सभी राशि चेक द्वारा ही ली जाएगी।आगे जानकारी देते हुए उन्होंने कहा की निधि समर्पण कार्यक्रम में राशि एकत्रित करने के लिए श्याम लाल बंसल को जिला संयोजक की जिम्मेवारी सौंपी गई है तथा मंडल स्तर पर उनके सहयोग के लिए बल सिंह राणा विशाल सेठ संजय आहूजा एवं वीरेंद्र गर्ग को जिम्मेवारी दी गई है।
विधायक ने कार्यकर्ताओं में जोश भरते हुए कहा कि यह हमारी परीक्षा की घड़ी है हमें चुनावों तक बैठना नहीं है। हमें यह चुनाव पूरे समर्पण के साथ तन मन धन से लड़ना है।

जिलाध्यक्ष दीपक शर्मा ने कार्यकर्ताओं से कहा कि हमारा संगठन बूथ स्तर तक मजबूत है फिर भी हमें उसकी और ज्यादा मजबूती के लिए  मेहनत करनी है आज देश में भाजपा के प्रति बहुत ही अच्छा माहौल बना हुआ है और जनता हमारे साथ है हम सबको मतदान दिवस तक बिना थके मेहनत करनी है और दोबारा से केंद्र में मोदी सरकार बनवानी है।
आज की इस बैठक में जिला महामंत्री हरेंद्र मलिक उपाध्यक्ष उमेश सूद मीडिया प्रभारी नवीन गर्ग महिला मोर्चा अध्यक्ष परमजीत कौर मंडल अध्यक्ष सतपाल गुप्ता युवराज कौशिक सुशील सिंगला एवं राजेंद् रनोनिवाल तथा विधानसभा के सभी प्रमुख कार्यकर्ता उपस्थित रहे।

Two day workshop on Data Science for Biology at PU

Centre for Systems Biology & Bioinformatics, Panjab University,Chandigarh, has organized two days Introductory Workshop on Data Science for Biology. Dr. Ashok Kumar, Chairperson of Systems Biology & Bioinformatics discussed the usefulness of this workshop. A very specific hand on training program was carried out for 60 participants from discipline of Bioinformatics, Biophysics, Statistics, and Forensic Science. The students were introduced to conceptual overview of Data Acqisitionon, Data Preparation, and Data Exploration through Visualisation & Statistical data analysis using Statistica.

On the third day of National workshop on Inclusion: Making it Happen, Prof. Sudesh Mukhopadhyay, formerly: Chairperson of Rehabilitation Council of India, Head Dept. of inclusive Education NUEPA, Director, SCERT Delhi, explained various models of inclusion. She mentioned that teaching learning will be effective if a child will have the feeling of belongingness.
 Prof. Latika Sharma, coordinator CALEM and Chairperson, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh chaired the session.
 Prof. Virendra Kumar, Professor Emeritus, Faculty of Law, PU, Chandigarh delivered a discursive dialogue on Pandit Madan Mohan Malviya, National mission for teachers and training deliberated upon the RTE Act,2009. The introduction of ‘no screening’ provision has led to devising of admission process of ‘draw of lots’ or purely on the basis of ‘first come first served’ for initial admission of children to schools.
        Dr. Wasim Ahmad, Assistant Professor, GRIID, sector 31, Chandigarh explained the Universal Design of Learning. Prof. Raj K. Gupta, Department of Education, Panjab University, Chandigarh chaired the session. Dr. J.S. Jayara, Principal, School for Blind, Sector 31, Chandigarh. Dr. Reema Bansal, Assistant Professor, Rajiv Gandhi Government College, Saha, Dr. B. Aggarwal, Guest faculty, CED, Panjab University, Chandigarh and Mr. Himanshu, teacher in Kendriya Vidyalaya voiced their lived experiences. Today’s lecture: “Nationalism on the Margins: A Study of Indian Visual Culture.”

Department of English and Cultural Studies started the Faculty Talks series in the department. Speaker of the day was Dr. Sudhir Mehra, an Assistant Professor at the department. He has participated in many national level seminars and is an expert on Dalits in contemporary popular Hindi cinema. Today’s lecture was on “Nationalism on the Margins: A Study of Indian Visual Culture.” This series of faculty talks have been designed to acquaint students and researchers with the area of expertise of each teacher in the department. Mr Sudhir Mehra initiated his talk on how the whole ideology of nationalism was mobilised among the masses in a very careful manner. He focused on the importance of incorporating visual documents as an object of critical study from past decades till today. He traced the trajectory of postal stamps and posters celebrating the leaders of nationalist
movements which led to the discovery of how historical truth was mobilized and embedded in images. He talked about the manner in which DR. B R Ambedkar emerged as a strong figure in the 1960s when his image was portrayed among the masses through different icons. In this way, Ambedkar emerged from invisibility through a counter- approach by popular culture. Mr Mehra mentioned how the politics of visual imagery 
through creative slogans, postage stamps, etc in the late 20th century was greatly appropriate by political parties for their ends. He further commented on culpability of mass media in propagatin Ambedkar’s teaching to construct two conflicting ideas of nationhood. In the contemporary scenario, the very idea of a secular India is under scrutiny through the politics of iconization. Mr Mehra concluded his lecture with a 
question and answer session with students and research scholars from the department. 

HC Joginder Pal Singh won two gold & one silver medal in National Level Competition

          Head Constable Joginder Pal Singh Belt No. 57/CP of Chandigarh Police brought laurel to the department by winning two gold & one silver medal in 2nd National Master Games held at Dehradun, (UK) between 24 feb to 27 feb 2019. He won two gold medals in 4×400 meter relay race and 3000 stipple chase race respectively. He also won silver medal in 1500 meter race in this competition. He is presently posted on deputation at Home Guard Office, Chandigarh.

          Sh. Sanjay Baniwal, IPS, Director General of Police, UT, Chandigarh appreciated his achievements at National level competition and rewarded him with cash Rs. 10,000/- and certificate. Sh. 6 अप्रैल से 14 अप्रैल तक आयोजित होगा माता मनसा देवी चैत्र नवरात्र मेला – उपायुक्त पंचकूला

पंचकूला में चैत्र मास के दौरान प्रतिवर्ष आयोजित होने वाले माता मनसा देवी मेले के सफल आयोजन के लिये आज श्री माता मनसा देवी श्र्राइंन बोर्ड कार्यालय में एक महत्वपूर्ण बैठक आयोजित की गई। इस बैठक की अध्यक्षता पंचकूला उपायुक्त डाॅ0 बलकार सिंह ने की और बैठक में मुख्य रूप से एस0डी0एम0 पंकज सेतिया, कालका एस0डी0एम0 श्रीमती मनीता मलिक, नगराधीश गगन दीप सिंह, श्री माता मनसा देवी श्राईन बोर्ड के मुख्य कार्यकारी अधिकारी एस0पी0 अरोड़ा, ए0सी0पी0 ओम प्रकाश सहित अन्य संबंधित अधिकारी उपस्थित रहे। यह मेला 6 से 14 अप्रैल तक आयोजित किया जायेगा और पूरे मेले में पाॅलीथिन के प्रयोग पर पूरी तरह प्रतिबंध रहेगा।

उन्होंने अधिकारियों को निर्देश दिये कि वे चैत्र नवरात्र मनसा देवी मेले के सफल आयोजन के लिये सभी आवश्यक प्रबंध समय से पूरा कर लें। मेले के दौरान कानून व्यवस्था बनाये रखने, यातायात प्रबंधन तथा भीड़ को नियंत्रित रखने के लिये पर्याप्त संख्या में पुलिस बल तैनात करने के निर्देश दिये गये। इसके अलावा मेला परिसर में पर्याप्त संख्या में नाके इत्यादि लगाने पर भी चर्चा की गई। माता मनसा देवी मेले के साथ-साथ कालका में आयोजित होने वाले काली माता मंदिर मेला के लिये भी सुरक्षा यातायात व भीड़ प्रबंधन विषय पर चर्चा की गई।

मेला परिसर में सफाई व्यवस्था बनाने पर विशेष बल दिया गया और नगर निगम पंचकूला के अधिकारियों को इस कार्य की जिम्मेदारी सौंपी गई। यह निर्देश दिये गये कि मेले के दौरान प्लास्टिक बैग पर पूरी तरह प्रतिबंध रहेगा। मेले के दौरान अधिकारी नियमित रूप से दुकानों का निरीक्षण करेंगे और प्लास्टिक बैग का प्रयोग पाये जाने पर नियमानुसार जुर्माना भी किया जायेगा। स्वास्थ्य विभाग के अधिकारियों को माता मनसा देवी परिसर और काली माता मंदिर कालका में एंबुलेंस, प्राथमिक चिकित्सा, खाद्य पदार्थों का निरीक्षण इत्यादि की जिम्मेवारी सौंपी गई।

मेले में श्रद्धालुओं के सुविधाजनक आवागमन के लिये परिवहन विभाग को अतिरिक्त बसे लगाने तथा सिटी के अधिकारियों को भी मेले के दौरान अतिरिक्त परिवहन सुविधा उपलब्ध करवाने के निर्देश दिये गये। उत्तर हरियाणा बिजली वितरण निगम के अधिकारियों को मेला अवधि के दौरान निर्बाधित बिजली आपूर्ति सुनिश्चित करने, वन्य जीव प्राणी विभाग के अधिकारियों को मेले के दौरान नील गाय, बंदर व इस क्षेत्र में आने वाले अन्य जंगली जीवों से श्रद्धालुओं की सुविधा के लिये आवश्यक निर्देश दिये गये। हरियाणा शहरी विकास प्राधिकरण बागवानी शाखा के अधिकारियों को फूलों की साज सज्जा, अग्नि शमन विभाग के अधिकारियों को फायर सर्विस, मेला परिसर व मंदिर के लिये आने जाने वाले मार्गों की आवश्यक मरम्मत, स्वच्छ पेयजल आपूर्ति, यात्रियों को सूचना देने के लिये प्रसारण केंद्र स्थापित करने, मेला क्षेत्र में पार्किंग की सुविधा उपलब्ध करवाने सहित अन्य जिम्मेवारियां सौंपी गई।

Path of Sukhmani Sahib & Kirtan at UILS

Faculty, Staff and students of University Institute of Legal Studies (UILS), Panjab University Chandigarh participated in Path & Kirtan to commemorate the 550th Birth Anniversary of Sri Guru Nanak Dev Ji in a befitting manner, here today. This event was a part of the series of yearlong Celebrations organized by Government of Punjab and Panjab University, Chandigarh.  
On this occasion, path of Sukhmani Sahib, kirtan was recited by students.  The program was attended by Prof. Shankar Ji Jha, Dean University Instructions, Prof. Emanuel Nahar, Dean Student Welfare, Mr. Rajan Brar, Chairman Bar Council, Punjab & Haryana High Court, Mr. Suvir Sidhu, Secretary, Bar Council, Punjab & Haryana High Court.  
Students enthusiastically participated in the event and it was followed by Langar at UILS.

Lecture on the Message of Guru Nanak in the Digital Age

The department of English and Cultural Studies,Panjab University, Chandigarh in collaboration with the organising committee, constituted for celebrating the 550th birth anniversary of Shri Guru Nanak DevJi, conducted a lecture on the Relevance of the Message of Guru Nanak in the Digital Age, here today.

Prof. Karamjit Singh, Registrar, PU remarked how in current times of social inequality and distress, spreading the Guru’s message is ever more important. The basis of his message is to spread happiness, remove inequality and become awakened through regular reading of the Gurbani.

Mr.Rupinder Singh,primary speaker and senior associate editor with The Tribune, proceeded his lecture by establishing the revolutionary nature of Guru Nanak via his secular statements, challenges to existing religious order and promotion of religious harmony. At the time of Guru Nanak, sangat, pangat, and langar were established by the Guru as focal points for the framework of Sikhism. He forgave those who were intolerant and put them on the path of a pious life through ethical living and recitation of God’s name. In opposing the caste system, Mr. Singh expressed how the precursors of gurudwaras, dharamsals, were pivotal in using hunger as a leveller to overcome the unwillingness of the public to eat with lower castes. He reminded the members of the survival of langar or community kitchen at Sikh Day Parades, war zones, etc. He concluded his presentation with a summation of the digital presence of the Sikh community with aesthetic websites on Sikh culture and heritage such as SikhNet.com and SikhChic.com.

Mr. Singh’s words were significant to establish the applicability of the Guru’s teachings in the contemporary world. After his talk, there was a question and answer session. Research scholars raised important questions on how to imbibe Guru Nanak’s teachings in everyday life. Mr. Singh observed that by taking small steps of reading, understanding and practicing such teachings one can take inspiration from the Guru’s life.

Distinguished guests present were Prof. B. N. Goswami, professor emeritus, Prof. Deepti Gupta, the chairperson of the department, Prof. Sukhwinder Singh as well as faculty members and research scholars from different universities.
