Chandigarh: A day after his meeting with Shiv Sena in Mumbai, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) president Amit Shah held another meeting with the Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leadership on Thursday as part of his outreach drive. Shah met SAD patron and former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal and his son and party president Sukhbir Singh Badal in a closed-door meeting in Chandigarh.

After the meeting, Sukhbir Singh Badal rubbished rumours of conflict between the two allies. “Shiromani Akali Dal’s a permanent ally of BJP. There is no conflict between us. I would like to appeal to all our allies that this is time to fight, the battle is in six months. We should get together and cast away all our differences,” Sukhbir Singh Badal told newsmen.

The BJP-SAD alliance, which has been in power in Punjab for over three decades, pushed to the third spot in the 2017 Assembly polls. Of the 13 Lok Sabha seats in Punjab, the Akali Dal-BJP combine holds six (four Akali Dal; two of BJP), while the Congress has three seats and AAP another four.

The BJP has launched the ‘sampark for samarthan’ (contact for support) exercise to mark the fourth anniversary of the Modi government as it prepares for the 2019 polls. Around 4,000 BJP functionaries, including chief ministers and Union ministers, will contact one lakh people, who are recognised names in their fields, to inform them about the government’s achievements.

Shah In Chandigarh

BJP president Amit Shah arrived here today on a day-long visit, during which he will meet SAD patriarch Parkash Singh Badal and two sports legends as part of his party’s “contact for support” campaign ahead of the 2019 Lok Sabha polls. Shah will visit the residence of former Punjab chief minister Parkash Singh Badal here, a Shiromani Akali Dal (SAD) leader said. Few senior SAD leaders, including Sukhbir Singh Badal and Sukhdev Singh Dhindsa, will be present during the meet, the leader said. Shah will visit the BJP office here and later in the day, he will meet 94-year-old hockey legend Balbir Singh Sr and legendary athlete Milkha Singh (85). He will meet them separately at their residences, a BJP spokesman said.

The BJP president will also visit a Gurdwara in Sector 44, he said. On his arrival at the airport, Shah was welcomed by the BJP leaders and workers. Chandigarh BJP chief Sanjay Tandon and party senior leader Swaran Salaria were among those at the airport who received Shah, whose arrival was slightly delayed.

In August last year, Shah was on a three-day visit to Haryana. He had held a series of meetings and reviewed works undertaken by the Manohar Lal Khattar government. The BJP chief had also visited Chandigarh in May last year.

Even After Meeting With Shah, Shiv Sena – Ekla Chalo Re

A day after BJP national president Amit Shah met Shiv Sena pramukh Uddhav Thackeray as a part of his ongoing ‘Sampark for Samarthan’ campaign, the junior of the ruling coalition reiterated that it will contest the next year’s general elections alone. On Wednesday evening, when Amit Shah walked into Uddhav Thackeray’s residence Matoshree in Mumbai, he knew he had a tough task at hand. BJP’s ties with Shiv Sena, its oldest ally, have grown frosty in the recent past. The relations between the two alliance partners have come to such a pass that the two parties even contested the recently held bypolls in Maharashtra against each other, and almost lost both seats. Shiv Sena has also announced that it will no longer fight the Lok Sabha elections together in 2019 or beyond.

Amit Shah met Thackeray in Mumbai in an over-hour long closed-door meeting. Shah was present at Matoshree for over two and a half hours along with Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis and Sena leaders. Shah and Thackeray then had a one-to-one meeting for around 90 minutes, reports said. However, Shah’s outreach does not appear to have mended any broken fences.

A day after the meeting between the two leaders, the Shiv Sena has made it clear that there is no shift in its stance and that it will stick to its resolution to contest elections on its own. “We know what the agenda of Amit Shah ji is but Shiv Sena has passed a resolution that we will contest all upcoming elections on our own. There will be no change in that resolution,” Shiv Sena spokesperson Sanjay Raut said today.

Notably, a day ahead of the scheduled meeting between Shah and Thackeray, Raut told FinancialExpress.com that the BJP leadership’s outreach was “too little too late”. Raut had said on Tuesday that the Sena has taken a decision that contest all elections alone and attributed BJP’s move to seek an appointment with Udahav Thackeray as a fall out of the party’s loss in bypolls. “For ‘sampark’ we had to wait for four years… and to start this ‘sampark abhiyan’, BJP had to lose several bypolls,” he said, asserting that there was no change in the Shiv Sena’s stand that it will fight the 2019 Lok Sabha elections alone.

The BJP and Shiv Sena are at loggerheads for last few years. Their relationship deteriorated further last month during the bypolls. The two parties contested elections separately. In Palghar Lok Sabha bypoll, the Shiv Sena lost to the BJP, prompting its angry chief to announce that the party will contest next year’s Lok Sabha elections solo. The party was so angry that it even called the BJP its ‘biggest political enemy’.

Currently, Shiv Sena is a part of BJP government both at the Centre and in Maharashtra. While in Modi Cabinet, the party has only one representation, there are 12 ministers in the Devendra Fadnavis government.

Portrait of Nirankari head’s ‘assassin’ put up at Sikh museum in Golden Temple complex

The Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) on Tuesday put portraits of Gyan Singh, an alleged assassin of the Nirankari sect head Gurbachan Singh in 1980, at the Central Sikh Museum in the Golden Temple complex.

Also were put on display the portraits of former acting Akal Takht jathedar Gurdev Singh Kaunke, who was allegedly made to disappear by the Punjab Police, and journalist-activist Harnam Singh Dardi, the founder of ‘Chardi Kala’ newspaper.

Akal Takht jathedar Giani Gurbachan Singh along with SGPC president Gobind Singh Longowal unveiled the portraits in presence of Golden Temple head granthi Giani Jagtar Singh during a religious ceremony that also attended by families of the three. The family members were also honoured with ‘siropas’ (robes of honour) after kirtan and ardas were performed.

The caption of the Gyan Singh portrait reads, “Bhai Gyan Singh was born in 1949 at Boparai Guru Ki Ber village in Amritsar district. He was a close companion of Jarnail Singh Bhindranwale. He was president of Baba Deep Singh Ranjit Gatka Akhara Delhi.”

Thirteen Sikh protesters were killed during the Sikh-Nirankari clash on the Baisakhi day in 1978 in Amritsar when the former protested a congregation being organised by the then Nirankari head Gurbachan Singh.

The decision to install Kaunke’s portrait was taken during tenure of the then SGPC president Kirpal Singh Badungar on the demand SGPC member Gurcharan Singh Grewal.

Kaunke was appointed as acting jathedar of the Akal Takht with the support of pro-Khalistan groups during a ‘Sarbat Khalsa’ (Sikh congregation) held in January 1986, when militancy was at its peak in Punjab. He was arrested a number of times for his alleged support to militant groups.

Addressing the gathering, the Akal Takht jathedar termed Gyan Singh and Kaunke as “martyrs” of the Sikh community. “The SGPC has been recognising the martyrs of the community and it is praiseworthy to install their portrait in the museum.”

“These three personalities made a big contribution for Sikhs and the community will always remember them,” Longowal said.

Operation Blue Star anniversary: AISSF raises pro- Khalistan slogans

Brandishing of swords and open use of sticks was witnessed on Wednesday during a ceremony to mark the 34th anniversary of the Army’s ‘Operation Blue Star’ inside the Golden Temple complex.

The clash between radical Sikh elements and the Shiromani Gurdwara Parbandhak Committee (SGPC) took place right in front of the Akal Takht, the highest temporal seat of Sikh religion.

The incident took place just about 100 feet from the sanctum sanctorum ‘Harmandir Sahib’, the holiest of Sikh shrines located inside the Golden Temple complex in Amritsar.

At least one person was injured as the SGPC task force members tried to prevent the radical elements from disturbing the ceremony.

The radical elements raised pro-Khalistan (a separate Sikh homeland) and anti-India slogans.

Police personnel, present inside the shrine complex in plainclothes, tried to control the situation from getting out of hand.

“A turban was thrown on the ground in the clash,” one eyewitness toldnews men.

The SGPC officials said the situation was prevented from getting out of control due to swift action by the task force members.

Akal Takht jathedar (chief) Gurbachan Singh said the ceremony was held “peacefully” as a remembrance of the sacrifice of hundreds of people who were killed during the Army’s ‘Operation Blue Star’ in June 1984.

The Army carried out the operation to flush out heavily armed militants and radicals from inside the shrine complex between June 1-10, 1984.

Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are likely to shake hands

New Delhi: In a major political move, Aam Aadmi Party and Congress are likely to shake hands in three states namely Delhi, Haryana and Punjab and are likely to form an alliance.

As per top Congress sources, an offer has been extended to AAP to take 9 out of 30 seats in an alliance with Congress.

This comes 2 days after former AAP leader Kapil Mishra claimed that Kejriwal met Rahul Gandhi and hinted that he is attempting to form an alliance with Congress.

BJP on the other hand is slamming Kejriwal over the same saying “he came to power by counting the number of scams Congress has been indulged in, now if he forms an alliance with BJP, it will be betrayal”.

Congress is so far denying the claims on the record and refused to forming an alliance with Aam Aadmi Party. Now, all eyes will be on an official announcement from either of the parties.
